Hi there, I start into a new project by trying to find out how to make British soldiers red uniforms look right.
What do you think?
There are 3 different reds displayed:

I'd be glad to read your opinion!

Looking good.
-
I like the lightest version. Red uniforms were always prone to fading, usually to a brick red colour.
-
I like the darkest red figure.
It makes the yellow stand out more.
-
Just to throw my hat in the ring, I would say all 3 work well!!! lol That should help you out nicely. :) Nice work by the way. :)
-
No expert, but i,m with Adam on this one, the lightest one also looks best to me. Who makes the figs?.
-
All look good, I would be tempted to go with the one on the left a darker or flatter red is good save the more scarlet for officers sashes etc
I have some of these Foundry figures myself and they are great characterful minis

I tend to use foundry madder red for a nice faded red
Also depends on whether you want a campaign or just out of barracks look.
-
From the top photo. Red on left for the rank and file, looks most like brick red to me, and the one on the right for the officer's finer scarlet uniforms. Will give a distinction rarely seen in figures of the era. And the leftmost and rightmost give enough contrast for it to be visible in a mass of figures. Or so say I.
-
Thanks, guys!
I will take your advice and use different tones of red for officers and soldiers.
-
Excellent work on the foundry figs :)

Well done.
So, the first game is scheduled for sometime in 2025? lol
-
I would use all three reds. Not every soldier got his coat at the same time, so some
are bound to be different shades, even if there had been quality control over every
batch.

Hehe, funny! I think I will use a skirmish rules set. So there may be some game in the near future.
Thanks for the compliment, btw.

Hi,
as you can all see, I am not the first among photograpers but nevertheless want to show you some pictures of the progress I made in this project:

The last picture is taken before playtesting a 4-sides scenario of Rebels and Patriots for a convention in September.

Very nice project. :-*
keep it coming.
And the diferent reds for rank and file and officers work very well. ;)
-
Great looking minis :-*
-
Thanks for the Kind comments.
It's been quite a while that I wanted to do things like this because of my memories from childhood:
Bonnie Prince Charlie with David Niven:

Love all the figures but , for me , the Grenadiers are outstanding. The Osprey skirmish rulebooks are economical and give a good , fast , fun game . Rebels and Patriots would let you set up and play with what you’ve got now.
-
Nice work on those figures :-* :-* :-*
How did the four sided game go?
We have been playing this period using Fist full of lead "Horse and Musket" for smaller size battles that worked well
-
Thanks guys!
I've had to streamline the winning conditions to make it a little easier to have the players play aggressive. That's more fun in convention gaming imho.
The games engine - which I am a huge fan of - works extraordinarily well on Cons, as it is really easy to learn so that players start to do their own gaming after turn two or so.
Four sides goes as good as two as the game is IgoUgo because there is no turnover any more.

Just one tip on the red. The trick is to use the real color you want to end up with as a highlight over a series of dark brick to black red base layers. Red is difficult cult otherwise cause if you add white you end up with pink, if you add yeallow you end up with orange on top.
-
Thanks Captn, that is just the way I did it.
The orange on the sashes is the intended color.
