Title: 28mm Greek Generals...
Post by: Harry Faversham on August 02, 2018, 12:38:00 PM
Who makes the best looking 28mm dismounted Greek Generals/Senior Officers? I'm after some suitably imposing fellows to inspire my Hoplites on the field of battle.

I think the Foundry range for Greek generals is still the best overall. Xyston do a nice 28mm 'Leonidas' but the shield has a lambda, so more suitable for the Peloponnesian War.

Well it will be when I've done with 'em. A very nice man just dropped these lads off at mi' hovel. Half of them will transmorgify into Spartans so the Dunderheads can tell who's who!

I'm wondering at the method used to render the bases. I'd like to match some personality figures into the collection but I'm not sure of the basing technique?

I've got Warlord Games's Greek King on the stocks. He's wearing something that looks like armour on his upper thighs, would that be correct, or are they breeks of some sort? I don't want to paint them bronze then find out I'd dropped a royal goolie!

Yep its armour. There used to be armour sets that covered almost the whole body not unlike a renaissance knight. But later in the classical era they came out of fashion because the synaspismos was providing enough protection without having to carry all that extra weight of armour.

Great models suggestions for models.

My favourite general is a Salute 2013 model of Jason (Argonauts)  , which looks much more classical than "Argonaut" age, in my opinion.  Comes with the option of hoplon arm or one where he's holding the head of a slain dragon creature thing.

Might be able to find one on eBay..  That's where I got mine!

I'm just getting round to re-basing some skirmishers, slingers and blokes chucking javelins. Can you mix them as units, or were slingers in one mob and javelins in another?

I reality they were probably mixed up but I would have thought for most rule sets it would be best to keep them separate because they have different ranges.

At the moment the general plan is to have really nice figures, and old skool daft rules, along the lines of 'one hour wargames'. So mixed units of shabby riff-raff may be doable!

Looking at Swiftnick's nicely painted Bronze Age Achaeans, I'm thinking...
I wonder if Greek Hoplites painted their spear shaft thingys?

This mob'll never win any painting competitions, but I've wanted an Hoplite Army since I was a kid, and it's now coming along nicely. King Nikilles and Queen Jeanius (me and our Gert!) turned out nicer than I thought they would!
Next up, the dead bloke on his shield.

They do look nice.  Are old Foundry Greeks are smaller than their newer figures?  Will they mix with Victrix, Aventine or Gorgon Studios?

Those monopose Foundries aren't the old ones. They're also sculpted by Steve Saleh who did the Gorgon minis and the newer Foundry Greek sculpts. He also has another line of Greeks now under Footsore's Mortal Gods. All compatible.

Aventine also has some Hellenistic command that can serve too for variety: https://aventineminiatures.co.uk/catalog/index.php/cPath/53_65_70

The Old Foundry hoplites by Saleh were much nicer with separate shields.
One can even use Victrix shields and really upgrade them- or even older Foundry hoplite shields are better.
I completed these a long time ago and wanted to use the smaller provided shields so these could be the mythical "Iphicrataean hoplites".
They are a bit small for how I finally used them.

Warlord plastics shields are too big- I think the Victrix size hits the mark

The separate older Foundry shields were way better than the "soup bowls" (humor!!), of the single pose figures.
I have known fanatics that used a razor saw to slice off the lousy shields - that is a lot of work, I tried it on my Saleh Foundry Persians- which promptly put them back into the "to-do" bin. In the group shot below, the leader with sword with dog symbol has the cast on soup bowl- the others have the nicer- flatter separate shields.

Many of the Foundry hoplite characters are awesome figures.

I'm cogitating with having  go at a couple of bags of 1st Corps Spartan Hoplites. Anyone done anything with these figures, are they any good, I'd love to see some decent piccys of some painted up.

Sometimes a conversion works. This Epaminondas of Thebes has a Newline Designs Greek cavalry head swapped for the regular officer's Corinthian helmet.
Theban generals don't get much love in miniatures. I think this is a nice old Foundry shield as it has the nice interior detail.
