Title: The Battle of the Trident - ASoIaF project
Post by: Whyarecarrots on August 03, 2018, 12:52:11 AM
Hi all

I've been lurking here for a while, and thought it was about time I posted something of my own! Like many I have been inspired by the many amazing Song of Ice and Fire projects on these boards, and so I bought a variety of Perry and Fireforge models to have a go at my own. Now, two years later I've actually painted one of them!

I've decided to set the forces I make during Robert's Rebellion, nominally around the Battle of the Trident. As such, I'll be trying to do rebel forces from the North, the Vale, the Riverlands and a small force from the Stormlands. While the loyalists will be mostly from the Reach, with some troops from the Crownlands and the Stormlands as well. I may even do some Dornish when I work out how to make them...

I have assembled a fair few of these models, and will hopefully have time to go into detail about the approach taken with some of those builds in the future, but for now, the first painted model, a Stark spearman done to a standard that I'd be happy painting dozens of models to (basing not done yet):

I will admit that the fur hasn't quite come out as I would have wanted.

Comments and criticism very much appreciated!

Welcome to the fold!

A solid start and an excellent theme you have there.

A great start :)

Its always a pleasure to see another GoT project, especially is you can find time to share your thoughts on kitbashing.

Which boxes are you using, which parts are you using for each house/faction etc. Enquiring minds want to know! :)

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone :)

The models I've been using so far are as follows:
- Perry War of the Roses foot Knights
- Perry war of the Roses bows and bills
- Perry hundred years war English
- Perry hundred years war French
- Fireforge foot sergeants
- Fireforge Teutonic infantry

The Stark above is a straight build from the Perry French box with a green stuff fur cloak.

"Style guides" for the factions are a bit confused at the moment, because when I built these a couple of years ago I was only planning to do rebel forces (North, Vale and Stormlands) and my ideas about what they would look like were a bit different. So I have a hundred or so models built which have quite confused identities...

Ideas at the moment are:

- North: older armour, lots of padded armour for lesser troops, plenty of fur, long axes and spears. Mostly built from the Perry Hundred Years War range
- Reach: the wealthiest so most modern armour, lots of plate, painted plate as well. Mostly built from the Wars of the Roses range - quite a lot of straight builds.
- Vale: lots of mounted Knights, no foot Knights (models may be made in case I need dismounted models for gaming), most "feudal" in look. No models really assembled for this - plan to build using upcoming Hundred Years War cavalry, plus conquest Normans and some old warhammer Bretonnian archers. Lots of "white" plate, shields on most models.
- Stormlands: poorest of the regions, no real cavalry, mostly built from Fireforge sergeants.
- Crownlands: limited number of targaryens, not sure how to build them yet but will probably try to add a few more fantasy/flamboyant touches, lots of black painted amour. Other crownland nobles will probably be similar to the Reach, bit less wealthy.
- Dornish: no plans to add them yet, but if I do conceptually probably a mix between Arabs and Byzantines - unfortunately the Gripping Beast Arabs don't look very good :/
- Riverlands: not a clue!

Right, wall of text done. I have a Tyrell archer and a dismounted Arryn Knight on the painting table as test models at the moment so will put up some photos when they're done.

Mix in vikings and get yourself some Ironborn too.. (even though they're not there)

Don't tempt me - I have over a hundred of these to paint already, and that's without adding cavalry :p

Thanks Frostie.

Not had the chance to do any painting recently, but here are a few photos of built models that will get the paintbrush treatment soon.

First a couple of Northmen infantry -

You're not alone haha, mine are somewhere collecting dust as well.. ::)
But as I ordered my Ned Stark to-be yesterday, I have to continue as soon as possible I guess..

@Whyarecarrots
I really like your shade of grey on the Stark guy!
Will there be a stag on the chest of the guy from the Stormlands? There's quite some space, so I figured...

Thanks all.

@Maddoc - will do! Hope you make it back to the workbench soon.

@LordOdo - haven't really thought about how I'd paint him yet. My freehand is... Interesting at best, so I'm not sure about painting stags on each of the men at arms. I'll have a play when I get to painting him.

I see, my freehanding isn't the best either.

You could always 'cheat' like this guy did, painting 'just' antlers. Works quite well IMO

So it's been a while since I've posted here. I had a bit of a delay in progressing this project, but the last 10 days has seen a flurry of activity!

I have painted some Baratheons:

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/s2048x2048/44700933_537764856647307_3394786556425273344_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=ca58c36803b23df91f6583658ddf337a&oe=5C3BEB7D)

I painted a lot of Starks:

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/44835468_191933061705066_6255244039805730816_n.jpg?_nc_cat=106&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=9d4f7d7c878a50d3a4fae8c294e3d76b&oe=5C819E40)

I even painted some Tyrells:

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/s2048x2048/44710493_2250832451802582_3744346406979108864_n.jpg?_nc_cat=104&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=31a47f8dd6c8e6cbd06a551ce9258b6e&oe=5C58C742)

I may even take some decent photos at some point (probably after plucking up the courage to freehand the shields)! However for the time being hopefully the photos give a decent idea of where I'm going with the project :)

Thanks for looking :)

Thanks all. It's good to be back painting these again, and I'm happy with how these are turning out.

I've painted more Baratheons, using grey rather than green as an additional colour, to try and add a slightly more varied look to the force.

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/s2048x2048/44713528_742153189478923_719739074591588352_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=fb574b3f88acce3369617aef7371a4c3&oe=5C89B135)

After taking that photo I tried doing some rough freehand on the shields. I've kept them deliberately basic to try and stay in keeping with a relatively low-fantasy feel that I think the ASoIaF world has, where every infantryman would not have perfectly painted shield heraldry. Looks a bit ropy up close, but I like the effect from a distance:

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/s2048x2048/44705790_585824565190848_6038805927497302016_n.jpg?_nc_cat=102&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=9ee78b43c681e449f0ce12de09513ddd&oe=5C4D85FB)

I now have a few Tullys on the painting desk as well.

Thanks for looking :)

Speaking of Tullys (freehand to come)....

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/44783338_10156732057884817_1459049151214911488_o.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=e789517f868bc7abc74fd88b16e50117&oe=5C4C52DC).

They're probably the house that had the least defined style - I wasn't intending to do any Riverlanders when I first built all these models so I've had to try and give them an aesthetic out of models that were already built. I've settled on a combination of leather/padded armour and relatively simple helmets, with a lot of bright colours. I think they're distinctive enough compared to the Reachmen, but we'll see...

Thanks for the suggestion Hunlion, but I think I'll be having a wide variety of single sigils so transfer sheets may not work for my purposes.

I've now painted up a couple of Targaryen archers. I'm not intending to have many troops in Targaryen colours, but then it would be strange for them to have no soldiers under their command. They're going to be the most flamboyant in terms of armour, but their colouring is quite dark and sinister:

I've finally plucked up the courage to paint a bit more freehand on my models!

They look a little bit off up close, but I'm overall happy with the effect:

(https://scontent-lht6-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/s2048x2048/45537878_2167178900183647_3569970996754513920_n.jpg?_nc_cat=101&_nc_ht=scontent-lht6-1.xx&oh=c9b0ed136c293b56712f67cb455e73e3&oe=5C76BFBF)

Hiding behind the Starks is a Dondarrion spearman, shown here with an archer. They'll be joining the Royalist host as part of the remnant of Jon Connington's force from the Battle of the Bells:

(https://scontent-lht6-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/45616964_10156760572614817_2455896822799925248_o.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent-lht6-1.xx&oh=f2ef9502658ec9ed421391bb63e24ffe&oe=5C85A11A)

Also a Karstark man at arms (a bit more simple, but it works overall I think):

(https://scontent-lht6-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/45506151_438910089969297_252649243574009856_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_ht=scontent-lht6-1.xx&oh=47954ac6a9b636255b928e51eb71336e&oe=5C7AFFFE)

Thanks :) I thought a slight variant on the sigil from the books (wavy blue and red lines) would be easier. And Trout Rampant sounds like a good name for a wargame!

My Starks are more white than grey, as per the book 'a grey dire-wolf on an ice white field', so they have white surcoats and shield. I really like the way you have done the wolf head and Tulley trout on the shields and may try to do something similar (although I am sorely tempted by the German transfers). Really enjoying your work.

Trout Rampant: Wargaming in the Riverlands!

Any tips for doing yellow roses?

My approach was to paint a yellow circle (up through Army Painter Desert Yellow to Army Painter Daemonic Yellow), and then use the base colour to draw shading into the circle to give the petals of the rose, and then some VMC Buff for a smaller inner circle.

Good point re. the shield colours - I genuinely got that bit wrong, rather than it being a deliberate artistic decision!

I've added glop to the bases of another batch of models, this time trying to include a lot of Reachmen to combat the overwhemingly Northmen focussed approach of the first batch (the Royalists are currently outnumbered about 5 to 1...)

I realise that this project has been going on now for some time with no decent photos. Well, what follows still aren't great but they are better! Hopefully they should give a sense of the progress that has been made so far:

The Starks:

I also decided to throw them all together into their over-arching alliance blocks and... the Royalists need a few more soldiers.

Thanks Devoted of Slaanesh and AKULA! It may be a while until a game is played with this lot, but I'll definitely post up some photos when one happens :)

Painting continues apace, and as well as some more Dondarrion foot (no good photos yet) I've also painted up Ser Jonothor Darry of the Kingsguard. Rather than painting the armour fully white, I painted it in gunmetal drybrushed with silver, and used watered down white to add a patina over the raised areas. It's a slightly odd effect but I personally quite like it:

Looks good to me! A fully white painted armour would look weird indeed I figure, this works a treat though!

The KG armour looks good to me, and in combination with the white tabard it's pretty unmistakably Kingsguard! Besides, after a few battles all that white enamel would probably be chipped off!

Some very creative kitbashing and effective painting. Keep going with the hand painted sigils - it gets easier!
I went for the same Tully trout ;)

In the novels, by the way, the Tully livery is described as vertical red and blue stripes with a leaping salmon sigil. The HBO version with the wavy lines is the invention of Messrs. Benioff, Weiss or their production designer.

I've added this project to the LAF GOT project index...

I'm finding it is gradually. I decided to go for the halved shields for ease, but may well go for the vertical stripes when I get around to painting banners for them. I am also finding that it's helpful to take some artistic licence with heraldry - House Darry (black ploughman on brown) have had their sigil replaced with just a black plough!

I've been busy over the last couple of days - have painted and based another 20+ models and added glop to the base of another 30+. I'll take some photos at the weekend when I get some natural light. Those 30 are now the only models from the first flurry of kit-bashed models made a couple of years ago that are unpainted, so I'm getting very close to allowing myself to build more!

Sorry for the slight delay in adding more to this thread. I've had a fair bit of painting done and just have failed to update this thread.

As mentioned in the last update, I've added significantly to the Royalist forces. I've tried to add in a variety of less well known houses, rather than relying solely on large forces from the great houses. This means I've painted lots of different sigils and colours, based on a combination of canon and semi-canon sources (i.e. I've spent too many hours trawling the wiki!).

Anyway, without further ado, onto some photos!

Royalists:

A mixture of House Dondarrion troops from the Stormlands (I have placed them on the Royalist side because of some historical ties between their family and House Targaryen) and House Darry troops from the Riverlands (a noted Royalist house from the Riverlands) including Jonothor Darry, knight of the Kingsguard.

Troops from House Rykker (from the Crownlands) and House Connington (from the Stormlands - presumably troops from the remainder of Jon Connington's defeated host from the Battle of the Bells).

A miscellaneous selection of Royalist troops. Two men at arms from House Targaryen (one of whom will have a banner when I work out how to do those), a man at arms from House Tarly (Reach) and two troops from House Florent (Reach).

Rebels:

Even though I focussed heavily on Royalists, I have still painted a variety of troops for the rebels. Predominately forces from the Riverlands, from House Tully and House Mallister. I did also paint a single man at arms from House Mormont (North).

Since painting and photographing this lot I have painted the last 15 or so of the first tranche of models that were assembled back in 2016. I'll put up photos soon. What this does mean is that I am now allowed to start assembling more models, and have purchased from Perry Miniatures Cavalry and some Frostgrave and Oathmark infantry in preparation for kitbashing some more.

In the meantime, thanks for looking!

Lovely paint jobs - the freehand sigils look the part for me - I’d originally been tempted by transfer but think I’ll give the freehand a go myself.

Great job on the heraldry! And yay for more kitbashing. I've really enjoyed working the Oathmark models into my collection, they are a little shorter and stouter than Perry, but I don't find that they look out of scale.

Thanks for the kind words all :)

@Ogrob - I am still waiting for them to arrive, although a sprue of Frostgrave soldiers has arrived, and I'm excited to see what I can do with them.

@HappyChappy439 - Thanks! I am very happy with how the Connington sigil turned out, although it was a pain to paint...

Speaking of kitbashing, I have now based the final 15 (photos to follow) so that means that the box of shame has been brought in from the garage!

Some assembly has now happened! I bought single sprues of the Frostgrave Soldiers and Oathmark Human Infantry to try them out and see if it's worth buying more. Overall I think there are some good pieces on both sprues, and the bodies are a helpfully different style to the other soldiers, making them suitable for slightly different looking troops from the Vale*. My only issue with them is that the overall style is more noticeably "fantasy" than even the Fireforge models - I'm hoping that the slight scale issues will be fixed with some paint.

Anyway, onto some photos!

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/s2048x2048/49710265_363047544506597_1096419380171898880_n.jpg?_nc_cat=104&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=77498053fb9ca7aa3eb1048ec063a132&oe=5CD73DD2)

The two on the left here are straight builds from the Frostgrave Soldiers box, the spearman has arms from the Perry HYW French and a Fireforge helmet (in my mind looted by his grandfather and something of a family heirloom), and the axeman has Frostgrave arms and otherwise Perry HYW French pieces.

(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/s2048x2048/49548123_361637271235656_2963526742750265344_n.jpg?_nc_cat=105&_nc_ht=scontent-lhr3-1.xx&oh=d5ecd2ca35af5a45574e766fcd4f1fd8&oe=5C912A34)

The spearman and axeman are both straight builds from the Oathmark Human Infantry box, while the other three on the left are mixtures of Oathmark, Frostgrave, Fireforge and Perry HYW English pieces. A few slight scale issues with the heads I think the pieces fit together quite well. A Targaryen infantryman has snuck in on the right of this photo as well, using a head from the Perry European Mercenaries command sprue.

As a quick related question, does anyone know if the European Mercenaries set has more Italian style barbute helmets in? I really like it but it doesn't seem efficient having to buy a whole command sprue to just get one.

Thanks for looking!

*In my patented (and entirely head-canoned) relative wealths of the regions, the Vale is one of the less wealthy regions, however what wealth there is is funnelled more into cavalry, so they will have lots of well equipped heavy cavalry, but their infantry is particularly shabby.

There are two barbute style helmets on the command frame for the Perry European mercenaries set, one Romanesque style, and one with the straight T shaped opening. But you do get two command frames in the set, so four barbutes. And don’t forget you can but the command frames separately in the accessories section of the Perrys online plastic ranges store...These are the only barbutes from amongst the 70 or so different heads in the five different Perry WOTR era plastic sets! Sadly  :)

I think there's a set of Italian heads that Perry does as part of the European Armies range where you get 12 or so barbute heads (out of 36 heads), but they're metals, as a heads up!

That is annoying! I have one Mercenary command sprue, but buying another for just 2 barbutes is a bit much...

Thanks for the heads up on that pack - it looks pretty handy so I may have to grab one at some point :)

Looking more at the recent builds, I think I've realised that the heads on the Oathmark sprue are just too large, even for their own bodies, let alone to be added onto the smaller Perry bodies. Its a a shame because I like the designs of the bodies, but the heads are unusable and the weapons are pretty awful. The Frosrtgrave soldiers are a bit better in terms of heads and weapons, but the bodies are a bit too ramshackle to use a lot of them. Think I might have to look at the Conquest Normans again...

I've just realised in retrospect that me saying "heads up" in the context of buying Barbutes is a terrible pun and I apologise!  lol

If it helps I didn't even notice the pun, so my response wasn't deliberately carrying it on...

I had some exciting post arrive yesterday:

And I've assembled some cavalry out of them! A rough plan is to use the HYW cavalry for knights from the Vale, the Crownlands and the North, and the WotR cavalry for the Reach, the Riverlands and the Targaryens.

Just straight builds from the box for now (with a Fireforge shield added on one) and I am very impressed by the quality of these models so far
