Title: I've fallen into Shadespire
Post by: Suber on August 12, 2018, 10:43:16 PM
Well, the thing is that a friend invited me to a test gaming to try it... and I liked the game! Who would have guessed. After that he commissioned me to convert and paint his core set, the Sigmarites and Khornites. I've done the Sigmarites so far. The instructions I got were to make them look like WHF Knights of the White Wolf, but into the AoS fashion. So, first thing was to remove lions and to sculpt wolves...

Or Paw Patrol puppies, whatever my skills allowed ;D

Fur, fur everywhere:

With this classical inspiration...

...I tried to do something on the large shield. I removed the hammer and...

So the boss ended up looking like this:

With a magnificent head by Statuesque I turned this other mini into this:

And with just another head swap I got this out of the third one:

Then I had to see if the brushwork could achieve the White Wolf vibe...

You can find more insights about the sculpting and painting here:

You know the worse part of this? That I liked the game that much... that I've got a copy for myself :D So I have to convert and paint my pal's other band and the two of my own ::)

To be fair... Its a really good game. And I like all the models for it so far too!... And I'm really not a fan of the AoS aesthetic much. But over a small number of models it works.

Nice conversions. And yes, I like Shadespire too. A lot.
Tbh, I became sort of a GW-fanboy the last couple of months. Like their games, like their models. Who would have guessed after a GW-hiatus of 15+ years..  o_o

I've finished the Sigmar warband of my own. After a lot of headaches trying to find the right vibe, I tried something... different ;D

The Stormguys are eternal warriors brought to life again and again by Sigmar for the everlasting war. But in the city of Shadespire, time is but a joke driven by Nagash against mortals and immortals alike. These warriors experienced some, ahem, minor problems during their last coming to life, and now are condemned to fight forever against all odds...

Wow, they are very nice indeed. I'm not keen on the 'overblown' nature of a lot of the AoS stuff, but I really like what you have done with those.

Thank you! It all was easier once I left my prejudices apart and simply begun to do fun stuff -what I really wanted to do, even without being aware of it! ;D

I had not seriously considered the game because I was not much taken by the miniatures.  What do you like about the game itself?

Any resemblance to Mordheim (my favorite fantasy skirmish game)?

I really like the darkened armour- for some reason it improves the minis to my eye.

Completely different beast in afraid. Shadespire is really a boardgame.

Right, I think you can't really make a fair comparative. Both systems are totally different, Shadespire being more a boardgame, as Sir Theo said. Each warband consists in a certain number of determined characters and the list is closed. I still haven't played it that much, so I don't dare to give advice, but I feel that the difference is made through the actual game with the cards you draw, and that's where the fun lies. So it's not really a skirmish game. It's quick to learn and play, and that's something I value nowadays, but that's just a personal choice.

I knew from the very first moment that I didn't want to play on cardboard. Fortunately I learned about these:

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/Y32ZGWpVLFLe4nrlgOVs41QY_NlafASutac20Bs47FLjrKnBb6AbFdWZ28kKlyOre-L9_0my3DvHHZZNnWIjScx_tesIgDT9iuyyKxyh--_b6WY4j38KeEqB8IUbhK3FjQ=s0-d)

So, with some DAS and a textured rolling pin from Green Stuff World I begun to build this:

I didn't even try to match the official boards aesthetics, I went my own way. I wanted to depict a ruined, abandoned city (kind of Osgiliath during the War of the Ring). So all the cobblestone would be deformed up and down, there would be ruins, puddles and whatever.

I faced the problem of marking the start tiles. I used these as warpstone (maybe more Mordheim that Shadespire, but hey, it works for me)

So this is the first board:

Unfinished, we'll come back later to this matter.

The second one has three blocked tiles:

I pursued some minimal urban sense, a hint of a street or whatever. If you look closer, only the L-shaped building blocks the tiles, the other ruins are placed on the corners of the tiles, trying not to be an obstacle. The blocked tiles being the exception, not the rule, I hope I can make it visually clear, adding rubble to those and making them obviously impassable.

Let's move on, for the moment. I tried a new thing on the third board:

Unfinished as the others, but enough for now. The last one also has three blocked tiles (a single one and other two on a row):

So OK, we have the basics. Let's add some details, like rubble...

...leaves...

...and lots of foliage:

So in the end I came to this (two pics per board, one from each side):

Fantastic models and boards. Really rich and evocative.

Why don't you paint the paper for the leaves on both sides before punching?

Short answer is that I'm a lazy bugger ;D. But you are totally right, I should have done that. It's been my first time with some materials here, but I've identified some lessons learned ;)

Where are those hexboards from?

From Collateral Studio, a tiny Spanish company:
http://www.collateralstudio.es/catalogo/tablero-doble-ciudad-caida/

They also sell the other mdf hexes I used for 3D effects. Huge time saver.

I've finally managed to convert & paint the Khorne warband. Minimum conversion, just gladiator heads by MaxMini:

I kept the poses and weapons so the characters are easily recognizable when gaming. I only tried to give them a twisted looking with the horns and stuff (yet I took most of the original minis spikes away). Eventually I got this:

Wow. Thanks for sharing. I would love a tutorial from you in painting weathered metal. Some of the best I've seen. I can't believe how good the Blood reavers look with Gladiator helmets.

Thanks for sharing your art.

Awesome project man, those undead stormcasts look fantastic!!
And those board tiles are something else, really good job.

Short answer is that I'm a lazy bugger ;D. But you are totally right, I should have done that. It's been my first time with some materials here, but I've identified some lessons learned ;)

Have you considered punching actual leaves? They work really well and save you tons of work with paint and such :)

Ooops, sorry!! I missed these answers! :'(

I would love a tutorial from you in painting weathered metal.

You can find it on the blog post, where I show a step by step walkthrough. But I can take no credit at all, I took it from the Gardens of Hecate blog!
Sorry for such a late answer!

New commission, same minis. This is the third time I convert this kit; you can still make different things with these, which I think speaks highly of monopose minis:

My pal asked for living statues, kind of D&D animated armours. So stone it is!

I tried a slightly lighter colour for the bases, so it wasn't all the same chromatically speaking:

Finally, some ivy I had left from my boards:

Here you have them next to my own band:

Exploring the ruins (I need to photoshop that background!)

You can find them on the blog post (http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com/2019/02/stonecast-for-shadespire.html) too. The project involves all three bands of Sigmarites so far, so you can expect more statues incoming anytime soon...

Shadespire is a little gem. I would never have thought GW could produce a game that can be played with such a low model count.
Plus I really like the sculpts.

Your painting and especially the clever conversions are bloody brilliant!

I'll be very interested to see what you do with the Farstriders: I'm not a fan of the stock figures at all.

Nice conversions. And yes, I like Shadespire too. A lot.
Tbh, I became sort of a GW-fanboy the last couple of months. Like their games, like their models. Who would have guessed after a GW-hiatus of 15+ years..  o_o
Your resistance is low.
I think they make a pill for that.  :-)

I finished the other statue warbands :)

The Farstriders were somehow tricky. First of all, I took the eagle away. I didn't like the idea of a stone bird (you know, that's the weird way suspension of disbelief works :?) neither fancied the 'Clash of the Titans' mechanical bird concept. So I totally replaced it.

I also took the crests away and touched the crossbows/bolt throwers/whatever those ugly things are. They are still ugly, but bearable :P

Same thing about the painting process:

For the Cursebreakers I used some of the bits I had left from the core box:

These eventually turned into these:

So here you have the three stone warbands (I think there's an intruder in this pic, shhhh :-X):

Everything related to this is here:
http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com/2019/02/set-in-stone.html

I'm already working on new stuff, I hope I can bring it up over here anytime soon.

Very nice. The temptation to have the basing match the figure is one that must be hard, but they look better for being slightly different.

But.. this looks great. Excellent work. Please make more!

Revisiting the Khorne warband from the core box again. It's a commission for the pal I painted the first band in this thread for. We discussed for some time how were I to approach these minis; I have the Sepulchral Guard (the skellies) and I was thinking of a One Thousand and One Nights vibe, I mean, turbans, scimitars. My pal liked the idea and we thought 'why not? Let's try the concept on these minis first and see what comes out of it'
To give them another twist, I used these GW bits so I ended up with a tribe of desert nomad cannibal ghouls of Khorne. Or something, just mix up those words at will ;D. Given that ghouls have an Arabic origin, it was a fun way of making a pastiche, in the finest Warhammer tradition :D

I used mostly earthy colours, but for red (to tie them in with Khorne) and the yellow turbans, to make them stand out a little. I kept the basic poses to make them recognizable. The exception is the guy with the spear, but he bears a two handed weapon anyway, so there should be no problem.

Maybe not perfect conversions ;D, but I think they work at tabletop distance. More of it on the blog:
https://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com/2019/03/desert-nomad-cannibal-ghouls-of-khorne.html

I don't know if I'll repeat the thing on the skellies, but I'll discover it eventually :D

Yet another crazy warband! A commission for a friend. He got the Dwarfs, the Chosen Axes band, but wanted them to look like old, proper Slayers, keeping somehow the original poses (to make them recognizable). This proved to be a tricky challenge, as some of the heads were truly impossible to rearrange and many pieces of the multi-part kit were quite a nightmare. Anyway, I managed to get this:

Painting them was supposed to be easy. I used the very classic white and blue stripes trousers:

But my friend considered they looked too uniform. He wanted more variety, so I saved one and changed the rest...

Gorgeous work all round, but I particularly love the stunties!

So much so that I missed that they were a conversion, walked into my LGS today to buy some of my own and was very disappointed when I realised the sculpts all have goofy helmets and no pants :(
