Title: CoC Malaya 1942 campaign
Post by: TacticalPainter on August 25, 2018, 09:06:12 AM
Time for another Chain of Command pint-sized campaign. This time we venture to the Far East for the Malaya 1942 campaign from the 2015 Christmas Special and a chance to use my Australians and Japanese, who've only had one outing since they were painted.  I'm attacking as the Japanese in this one and there's a few unique characteristics to adjust to.  This is the first scenario, a patrol encounter in the jungle.  After playing the defender in The Road to Bremen its my turn to attack, this time with the Japanese. The first AAR is here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2018/08/malaya-1942-scenario-1-winning-encounter.html

I hav,nt played CoCommand for a couple of years , but a good report like this makes me want to game it again. I like the way you,ve included your thinking , at each stage , as the game unfolds.  The Aussies pulling back , in good order , is the mark of a campaign game working well .   😎✔️✔️

We reach the second scenario, a probe game with the Japanese trying to find a way past the Australian outposts and through to the main defensive positions. The Australians have to find a way of holding back the Japanese and yet avoid too many casualties, which makes for a finely balanced campaign. Thanks, I have plans to work up some more paddies and will try to make some that are in-season, which will test my skills at creating water effects.

Thanks, not that I'm biased or anything but I really would recommend you give CoC a try.  It's not only a great gaming experience but has a very good feel for tactical level WWII.  It just feels 'right' if that makes any sense.

A few coats of gloss varnish, or one of the 'Water Effects' liquids that you can get , eg from Woodland Scenics https://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/Water will do the trick. It's what I used.

After a break of a couple of weeks we are back at it in Malaya for Scenario 3 where the Japanese come up against the main Australian line. Up until now the Japanese have successfully pushed the Australians back but now it is time for them to make a stand. Will the Australians bring the Japanese advance to a halt?

Another great looking game in the jungle. well done.

Did you make your own markers or are they commercial?

Thanks. In this particular game the markers for things like Tactical and Broken were my opponent’s and I think some of them came from Olympian Games.  The jump off points and patrol markers I made myself.  You can see more about the markers and other pieces I have made for CoC here https://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2018/07/chain-of-command-beginners-guide.html

The Australians decide to take advantage of their victory in the last scenario and take the fight to the Japanese. They have to be careful not to take too many casualties but whatever they can do to delay the Japanese will help towards a campaign victory. A short gap between AARs and we are back at it again. This time the Japanese resume their attack to clear Map 3, this time taking an alternative route through the jungle. Would it prove more fruitful than their failed attack down the road, or would the Australians prove capable of repulsing them once again? The Japanese drive continues and we find the Australians defending a precarious position with a high risk the Japanese will get around to their rear and block their withdrawal. This calls for careful play by the Australians, as the consequences of losing here could be dire. The Australians have done well so far, but their numbers are down and the Japanese are pursuing them aggressively. How much longer can they keep the Japanese at bay? This is the second last map of the campaign and it's coming down to the wire. If the Japanese can win this one and the first game on the final map then they seal a minor and historical victory. Wow!  That table looks pretty bad ass!  The overall look puts you in the tropics.  I reall dig you roads...never thought about roads for that type of terrain.  My buddy has Jap platoon and we've been kicking around doing this campaign.  I just finished up some Aussies too.

We now reach Map 6, the final map of the campaign and the Australians have had to resort to a replacement platoon of inexperienced, rear echelon men. Things are looking desperate and victory for the Japanese here will give them a minor campaign victory. Can the green Australian platoon make a desperate, last ditch stand and stave off defeat? With TFL working on the Far East supplement we thought it might be a good idea to write a joint summary of our impressions of the campaign and in particular playing Chain of Command with and against the Japanese. My opponent Dave and I have combined our thoughts into a single post and Dave ends it with a bit of personal family history that links him to the campaign. The post is here http://thetacticalpainter.blogspot.com/2019/01/malaya-1942-campaign-postscript-and.html
