Title: Aquanefs (VSF Submarines)
Post by: Bullshott on August 30, 2018, 08:47:50 PM
In his Mars! thread James posted this WIP of a small aquanef (submarine):

Can anyone suggest designs/provide pics of small VSF-style subs of this size or a bit larger. Also, suggestions of sources of models, etc for use as a base to build such vehicles would be helpful (rather than completely build from scratch).

I want to build a couple of aquanefs, but am struggling with design concepts that would look workable but also shout "VSF". I have some concepts in mind (such as the Nautilus from the Disney version of 20,000 Leagues), but would appreciate any help you can come up with,

I don't have much to add, but reading along with interest.

When looking for VSF inspiration, I always first go to the work of alfred robida, I'm sure he did some submarines.

Good call on Robida:

His airship designs are also very similar.

More Robida:

The second submarine is closely modelled on a real one, designed by Claude Goubet and launched in 1887.

I've got a sketch of one I was planning to do ages ago that I'll upload in a bit. It's a bit Ghibli styley but not overly so.

Similar concept to the Robida designs :)

Replica of the wooden 1857 Ictineo I at Barcelona Maritime Museum:

and plans for it:

These pre-date Robida's pictures. I wonder how much Robida was aware of these when he did his work.

The Skylander toys have a few quite VSF-ish looking toys. Smythes had them for £1 each.

How big are they?

They look like they would be two seaters at 28mm.

Thanks. The second one certainly has promise as the basis for a conversion. I'll have to look out for these.

Have a few, and I'd say they're more one-seaters. The second one MIGHT have two folk one behind the other.

Have you seen the SnapTite Nautilus kit from Hallmark 20K Leagues movie? I was going to use it as an armored dig for Prussians on Venus. That was when they were in cutout bins everywhere, mind.

Definitely not the cigar sub most folk think of.

Doug

This is the Revell kit. You can still get them, although prices are variable. I might pick one up if within my price range, as it has a nice shape reminiscent of Robida and would be the perfect base for converting. Also, I could illuminate it.

I don't remember if you were there for our Aquanaughts game?
Maybe some inspiration on this thread

I was there for the game. A great game and certainly one of my inspirations for looking into aquatic games :)

To close this thread, prior to starting a new post on my interpretation of VSF underwater warfare, I give you some real Victorian submarines:

Resurgam, 1979:

Holland Class (first Royal Navy operational submarines, based on an American design):

If you are in the Portsmouth area it is well worth a trip to the Sibmarine Museum at Gosport, where Holland 1 is on display and you can even go inside her.

I think I remember seeing a Hello Kitty version of this same sub. Different colored parts but I think the same molds.

There's quite a few card kits floating around on eBay.

This one is 1/35 with an interior. ( if nothing else these sort of kits would give you a set of templates.)

Mark.

Here's a link to a steampunk submarine I painted in 2014. The sub was available at big box stores in their fish tank supply section. Hope it can be of use.http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=72585.msg884506#msg884506
