Title: The Old School Fantasy Painting Party (Completed)
Post by: Elk101 on September 08, 2018, 03:59:01 PM
Welcome to the LAF Old School Fantasy Painting Party (it's a party because D&D never talked about a 'club of adventurers!). The idea of the painting clubs is for LAF members to populate a club with 100 newly painted miniatures, one miniature at a time, following the theme in question.

The theme for this Painting Party is slightly different. Fantasy is a hugely popular miniatures genre and any Fantasy Painting Party would probably be filled in a few days whilst the rest of us were still under coating. We thought it might be nice to break things down a little and run more than one Fantasy Painting Club/Party. There was some discussion about how to do this but we thought it would be fun to look at the evolution of the fantasy figure and split the club into pre-2000 'Old School' figures and 2000 and beyond figures, incorporating the newer plastic and resin ranges. As well as being a visual potted history of figure ranges it's a great excuse to paint that 1980's figure you've had in a box for 30 years, or that 'OOP Old School Classic' you've just bought on ebay. So, two Fantasy Painting Parties, one for last century, and one for this one. LAFers are welcome to post in one, both, or just enjoy the range of miniatures that will hopefully appear.

So, the Old School Painting Party will cover any Fantasy figure up to 1999, it's effectively splitting the centuries. We totally recognise that there may be a grey area where people aren't entirely sure which side of 2000 a figure belongs to, but as long as people are posting in the spirit of the party, we accept that the odd figure may not technically be in the right place!

The usual Painting Club rules apply:

- Any LAF member can take part.
- You take part by posting in this thread, a picture of a single newly painted miniature that fits the theme.
- You can only post one entry within a 24-hour period.
- You can contribute as many miniatures as you like while the painting club is running. But you can’t post more than one per day.
- The subject of your picture must be a single, fully painted and based miniature.
- It can be whatever scale you like up to 40mm.
- It can be a figure on foot, a mounted figure, or a piece of equipment – a cannon or siege piece, for example.
- You can show your miniature on its own, or in a scenic setting.
- The picture can be a single shot of the miniature, or a composite of different views.
- Photoshop manipulation of the image (except for colour / brightness / contrast correction) is not allowed.
- Your picture should be a maximum size of 1000px x 1000px
- The miniature should be newly-painted for the club and not have been previously shown here or elsewhere on the internet.

If participants submit old stuff, that submission will be disqualified and removed.
If you submit more than one miniature in any one day, or multiple miniatures within a picture, that submission will be disqualified and removed.

You can upload the image using the LAF attachment function, or upload it to an image hosting service and link to here.

When you post a picture, please check the number of the entry before yours and then number your entry accordingly.

It would be great if you could title your entry too and perhaps provide some information about the figure such as the manufacturer and / or sculptor if known.

The club will stay open until 100 contributions have been posted. Then the club is complete.

When you post a picture, you become a member of the club and may add this splendid painting party badge - designed by Westphalia Chris, to your forum signature line:

Fantastic! So let's go ... I'm painting some old school giants for a while, so another giant it will be! Undercoating and basic colours already done.  ;D

Excellent. Your painting is always a delight to see.

There's a few other LAFers have old school threads on the go so I'm hoping they will post here too.

Ooo count me in. That ogre looks really nice. Now what to choose.just to clarify. Is it a total of 200 miniatures? 100 in each category?

Beefcake, this club will be 100 Old School Fantasy figures. We will run a separate club for 2000 onwards fantasy figures at a later date.

Like the detail of the Nordland shield on the skeleton. Get some more of your Nordland stuff on here, they're stunning.

No.3 Grenadier Kobold Woman

I loved these kobold minis ever since my brother bought the kobold on the earth dragon (which I now also have myself) I think I especially like them due to the fact that I had just played Quest for Glory (all time favourite game) and there was a kobold in it very similar to the style of these.
Anyway this is a sexy sexy kobold woman, painted her horns just for this photo she did. I have a bunch more of this range as well.
Original kobolds were released as part of 1505 Monster Manuscript Vol. V and were rereleased in 1992 (so pre 2000) :)

Off to a great start.
I am going to have to dig deep, deep, deep down to the very bottom-most foundations of the lead mountain to find something for this one... to my old black plastic Humbrol airbrush box, which I recall holds a mish mash of 25mm figures which long since ceased being shiny metal, and turned dull grey like pewter...
I don’t think I’ve opened that box for 20 years, so I’m sure there will be something in there that fits the theme...  ::) ;)

This is frustrating because I just happen to have on my work desk right now some of the classic all-time greats of the Vintage Citadel age … but it's actually a bunch of guys from an ongoing commission, which isn't in the spirit of the competition!

I'll just have to root out one of my Runequest dudes perhaps.

I have some Miniatures from Chronopia (from defunct Target Games). I think they were from the 1990s, they should be good to go? Yes?

It's not a competition, Cubs. Just a bit of fun. If it is something you are working on right now I don't think anybody would object to you showing it here. I'll bet a lot of people have submitted things to the various clubs that they were doing anyway in the past.

It's just displaying stuff from your collection that you've already done that is frowned upon, because we wanted to use these clubs to encourage people to get painting.

I agree with Plynkes, Cubs.
And I have my own question: I have just bought a made to order GW model - one of their old models which are now available on their site to order only. The original model was made in 1994 or 1995, unless I am mistaken, but my own model was made this year. It is identical in design, and is metal, like the original; and possibly (probably?) was produced in the old mould. Is it ok to include him?
(I could use another model from around the same period, but the only ones I have in hand without some extensive digging are rank and file plastics, and I feel like doing the 'new' (or not) big fat guy.)

Definitely interested in taking part as I've a few figures sat in the 'one day ' pile (not the lead pile) . Some of these are sets with both the character mounted and on foot. Obviously I'd like to paint the full set. How would such a set fit in?
Title: Re: The Old School Fantasy Painting Party
Post by: Elk101 on September 09, 2018, 03:35:13 PM
Personally I think it's OK for Cubs to put up a figure from a commission. It still meets the requirements; it's the right timescale and he's painted them himself and they've not been shown before. I'd also like to see them  :D

As regards the question from Vanlak, it's a 1995 sculpt, yes? That does still make it pre 2000 and within our definition of Old School, particularly as you had it cast by the original company. Unlawful recasts would definitely not be acceptable. It's a slightly unexpected grey area, but if no one else has a problem, I don't. It's not outwith the spirit of the club in that sense.

Just post the mounted figure one day and the foot figure the next. No problems!  :)

Went for a batch spray and base coat on these (got a couple more to finish off) as they're rather easy to do. The shield is a spartan one but mixing it up adds to the flavour with skellies  :)

Thanks - will replace him if there are objections (assuming I do actually finish him). And yes, it's cast by GW themselves, and quite expensive he was too!

True, but his honesty in the matter is appreciated. It's also been useful in terms of bringing up the recasting issue.

No. 5 Knight of the Blazing Sun
Citadel, originally sculpted by Michael Perry in 1992(?), 28mm

The actual model was also most likely purchased pre-2000 as it was given to me by a dear friend who introduced me to wargaming in the early 2000s. Back then it got covered in a wild mix of Revell enamels and almost dried up Citadel paints to complement some Bretonnian knights that constituted my very first miniature army.
Buried beneath the proverbial lead mountain amassed since then, this club offered an incentive to dug him out, rub the horrible paintjob off, and repaint him as quickly as possible. The model may originally have represented a member of the Reiksguard, but I chose to paint him as a knight of the Order of the Blazing Sun. These horrible parvenus were the bane of my most noble Bretonnians, yet my merciless tutor kept fielding them again and again. In memory of that literal kick-start into wargaming next time we meet I'll 'refund' my old pal with this model.

No. 6 - Orc Warrior
Harlequin, sculpted by Kev Adams, 1994-1995 (?), 28mm

Here we go with a classic Ork warrior. Finished him last night. One of the old good Harlequin Orks, sculpted by Kev Adams, produced back in 1990s, around 1994-1995 (?), I believe. You know, that's the good thing on Kev's Greenskins, in the last thirty years he made probably thousands of them for like hundred companies but you can put them together and they all fit. This one is supposed to fill up the ranks of my Orcs warband in dungeon crawler games.

Yes, I love that about Kev's stuff. The people that commissioned him must have loved the look as well hence it being widely used. I must get me some more.

The painting on that is spectacular by the way.

No. 8 - GW Wood Elf, 1991

I'm pretty sure this is pre-2000, correct me if I'm wrong? I think it's a GW Wood Elf but I'm not sure. I'm sure someone here will know? Some of you will recognise the inn in the background as the superb work of Silent Invader.

Your absolutely right. It's more of a curtosey in spirit of the thread. As I mentioned I wanted to take part . Unfortunately work means I may not be able to(in time) It wouldn't have been fair to number or claim it as a newly painted figure. Nor would it be to ignore the fact I said I take part.

I did the same, though they haven't survived the years well. I wrapped a few up in tiny bandages to create mummies. I have a dozen or so C17 Citadel metal skeletons from 1987 too. We're only at No. 9 so still 91 places left.

No. 10: Armoured Cloud Giant by Ral Partha, sculpted by Tom Meier, released around the mid-eighties, don't have an exact year.

Painted this one the last two evenings, it was great fun again. For the shield designs I cut up some Little Big Men transfers and repainted them. I really love the old Tom Meier giants, so full of character and humour, and I think I've got them all, mostly painted. Some of them were released as Citadel giants, so it can get a bit confusing. Maybe I can get another one done for the party ... Unfortunately my trusty camera is no longer supported by WIN10, so this is an ok phone picture, but doesn't show the miniature well.

Awesome, I 'll be sure to post her there!
I almost have the first one ready (old Metal Magic female ranger), and I have dug out a couple of handfuls of old lead that has been neglected far too long! I surely know what to do the next couple of weeks!

Thanks - I've had it (and a bunch of other Metal Magic stuff) for ages, ever since I played D&D back in the late 80s to early 90s.

No. 15 Rat Ogre
A second version Rat Ogre from Games Workshop, late 90s style. Not sure who sculpted these (Did Jes Goodwin do these as well as the 80s versions?), or which year they were released. Reasonably sure is was pre-2000 though.

Great stuff guys. I think that troll is a Perry sculpt from 1984. The Daark figure was a 1986 release, I think He was a follower of Malal.

The Daark figure was a 1986 release, I think He was a follower of Malal.

The 5th Chaos God! Malal (sometimes called Malice) was the renegade God who sought to destroy the other Chaos Gods and their followers. His adherents seek out and destroy other followers of Chaos whenever possible. It's a pity GW dropped the whole Kaleb Daark and Malal storylines, because I thoroughly enjoyed them. They could have run and run.
Title: Re: The Old School Fantasy Painting Party

I heard it was because the original creator managed to hold on to the copyright (somehow!) and GW were reluctant to use them.

#21 - Sandra Prangle (Citadel c1986 The Tragedy of McDeath)

Sandra is squire to Sir John Quicksure, a knight errant opposing McDeath. Her horse died on the way to the battle and she misses him badly. The original heraldry for Quicksure was a yellow (or maybe gold) griffon against a white or silver background, but I thought it looked too wishy-washy, so I changed it to a dark blue griffon against yellow background (similar to the Percy arms).

Poor grasp of the rules of heraldry, that chap. Never put a metal tincture on another metal tincture - only metal on colour or vice versa.

The changed one looks great, though. Thorougly swell leather tones, too.

Sandra Prangle, what a wonderful character  :-* And that is great work on that shield, Cubs.

This club is going quickly, and rather well, no?

The next time some wanker declares that LAF is home to a lot of unreconstructed old fart ‘historical’ wargamers, I will have to point out that the Napoleonic (AKA Big Battalions / horse and musket) painting club took literally A YEAR to generate 100 figures. Whereas this old school fantasy club looks like it will be comfortably done and dusted inside a month.

Thereby proving that LAF is actually the broad church it’s always been (and home to a lot of unreconstructed old fart ‘fantasy’ wargamers  :D)

Funny what different perspectives we have, Richard. Most of the criticism of LAF I have read has kind of been the opposite of that. That is to say that we are a bunch of frivolous skirmish lightweights who don't take things seriously enough, and are obsessed with pretty-pretty pictures and eye candy over solid wargaming substance.  lol

#23 Mithril Miniatures M37 - ‘Cutpurse’

From the Mithril ‘Thieves of Tharbad’ range, released in 1988. Apparently rare and discontinued… http://mithril.faerylands.eu/display.php?reference=M37

Seems he commands an asking price of Eu.40.00 on auction sites :o
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=75882.msg927970#msg927970

I however, found him in down deep in the bottom-most cranny of the lead mountain  ::)
He was originally in amongst a bag of about 50 various old (mostly crummy) 1980’s Cthulhu and D&D figures, that an old chum of mine (ex-RPGer) donated to me when he was clearing out his loft maybe 15 years or so ago.
I painted a few of them, then traded on all the rest – except this one which I kept back for some reason. Karma perhaps! He sat in a box in the bottom of an old steamer trunk for 10 years. Now he sees the light of day, free at last. No wonder he's sprinting...

As it happens, the person who donated that bag of assorted vintage figures to me, turns 60 years old in a few weeks’ time. So I’m going to give him this painted figure back by way of a birthday present.

As the miniature is 30 years old, I name him ‘Tim the cutpurse’, in honour of a certain wargaming Tim, (nephew of my esteemed friend, Malamute) who was also exactly 30 years old yesterday - the day I painted the miniature.

For their age, these Mithril figures are astonishingly well sculpted, standing comparison with the best of today’s miniatures.

1989 Dwarf on skis.
I use to have them as a skirmish unit.Absolutely useless as a concept( needed hills to work effectively. Although the mythos said they were so good on skis they didn't need snow!)But absolutely wonderful for gauging deployment. ( no one set up their key/favourite  unit nearest to a hill. ;)) apart from selling at £3 a millimeter. Still a fun figure.

Title: #27 Ral Partha Jabberwock 01-095
Post by: Maledrakh on September 16, 2018, 04:20:14 PM
(https://maledrakh.files.wordpress.com/2018/09/190216-jabberwock-1.jpg)

Sculpted by Tom Meier, 1983. Range: Things that go Bump in the Night. I think.
Made in lead!

The Jabberwock, inspired by one of my all time favorite poems is by Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland:

Jabberwocky
From "Through the Looking Glass"  (1871)

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree
      And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
      And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
      The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
      He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
      He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
      And the mome raths outgrabe.

I love how all the words sound like real English words. To quote Alice "It seems pretty (...) but it is rather hard to understand."

Still think it’ll be done rather quicker than the Age of Big Battalions though... that only took a year  ;)

I don't know, the Future wars one only took 15 days to fill a few years ago, I think like that one the fact that this is such a broad subject means it will fill out quickly too. Who doesn't have a random old Fantasy mini waiting to be painted in the leadpile?  ;)

Because like Mr. Tough Guy said, "Who doesn't have a random old fantasy mini waitin to be painted in the leadpile?"

I have had this figure for 30+ years and have looked at it repeatedly but never got around to painting it.  :? Why you ask I can't say. So this thread gave me the perfect excuse. Number 35: Champion of Nurgle

Classic 1988 model by Jes Goodwin from the releases accompanying the Realm of Chaos books. I was pretty happy with the rusted chainmail, but it didn't survive my poor photography. The verdigris on the plates came through well though. I found two unpainted copies of him in the box of old lead, the other one was a lot shinier but also had a lot more mold slip - this one was obviously in production for a good long time.

[Please forgive the Nurgling, I intended to remove him for the photo, but he was better attached than I expected. Kev Adams 1990]

#36 - Lady McDeath (Citadel c1985 'The Tragedy of McDeath')

These McDeath figs are quite tricky to paint sometimes. The 'source material' such as it is, varies in how it depicts the characters. I had two moderately sized pictures, plus a small paper cut-out stylie thing of Lady McDeath in the scenario pack to go on, and all of them were slightly different from each other and the miniature is slightly different again! I basically had to go with a 'best fit' for the colours and whatnot she has, based on what my eye can see and leave it at that. I really don't like painting yellow (especially over a black undercoat) and her dress has about six layers of basic yellow over a white base before the shade and highlight were added on. I also tried to subtly play down the large hooter and bulbous eyes she is sculpted with, to make her face a little more human.

Don't see too many mounted Dwarves, found this one in the lead pile.
Think it's a mounted Dwarf from Fantasy Tribes?
Not sure if it's correct pony(possibly LotR?)

#38 - Lord McDeath (Citadel c1985 'The Tragedy of McDeath')

It's actually the second time I've painted some of these McDeath mins and it's always good to have another crack at stuff. I tried to do a slightly more decorative shield this time, loosely based on the McDeath banner. It's difficult to see his sword in the picture on the cover of the scenario pack, but this time around I thought I could see a red gem and a swirled pattern on the blade, so that's what I gave the min. Enjoy!

Forgive the slightly 'yellowish' pics I'm posting; my trusted Canon PowerShot A560 has died, and I have not yet figured out what settings to use on my backup Sony CyberShot to get the white balance right when taking minis pics...  (I may have to get a better camera) :(

But here's

I've had that one in my collection for 25 years, at least, now finally painted, and ready to be used as The Healer in SS&SS...  ::)

EDIT:

I found a function in GIMP for adjusting the white balance; it is not perfect, but far closer to the real life colours:

Sadly just four more members of the McDeath scenario mins left … for now anyways.

The shield was one of those happy accidents really. the central boss meant I had to do a circular design around it, and the patterned designs on the banner with a central skull seemed to fit okay. I scribbled a rough design down and then as I was painting it, somehow the odd little curly flourish seemed to be needed, which evolved into the slightly serpentine heads pretty much by accident. I knew as long as I kept it looking symmetrical it would stay fairly pretty!

Thanks, considering I gave up on a very garish Humbrol enamel colour scheme for her many years ago, giving her an entirely new pj in just about one day is probably a new layering record for me  lol

These Painting Clubs are such great inspiration and motivation!

Sadly just four more members of the McDeath scenario mins left … for now anyways.

And we are looking forward to seeing them - that freehand shield design is top notch, and I am sure you can dig up some more treasures from the roots of the World's Edge Mountains!

That's the very first miniature I put paint to some time in the early eighties
Admittedly its a combonation of wiped of oil paint, and mad dry brushing. But it still makes an outing in my son's D&D .
Still a cracking figure and some lovely brush work (patterns often fight back on such fliud fabric folds. )
Mark.

Quite tempted to throw some paint at another figure .

#45 Elf children

This model is my implementation of the Mithril Miniatures1994 release "House of Elrond".

As you can see I have replaced the rather unsatisfying twiggy tree with a more suitable GW plastic one. The miniatures themselves have the same loveliness which the company's premier sculptor Christ Tubb has instilled in most of his work.

Unfortunately the production quality suffered some from the shift where lead was omitted from the casting metal.  The early ministures were  noticably more crisp in detail.

The Mithril Miniatures Middle Earth range is what had me collecting and painting miniatures back o so many years ago. It was a real joy to paint one again.

Another one of the fantastic Ral Parthy giants sculpted by Tom Meier. Smaller than his companions, but not that much dumb looking ... I played with some oils on his skin (love the smell of oil colours from time to time) and used Tamiya Clear Red on his armour (thanks to Pappa Midnight for this effect).

Fantastic entries all around here, one of the highlights for me is Blackwolf's giant with that lovely kilt!  :-*

By the way. Since I submitted a painted mini I have been trying to figure out how to add the badge to my signature line but it always shows up as big as a dinner plate. How do I shrink it down to size? All help is appreciated

Here's a resized one I made:

Wonderful additions all round :-*

Matt - the Chaos warrior is magnificently menacing.
Love the Mithril elves model too, Peder.
And the giants - great plaid, Guy.
And Michael, I love the smell of oil paint too! (Possibly why I'm addicted to oil washes on AFVs at the moment ;)).

#49 Stunted Wizard of the East (Alternative Armies circa 1992 CA4-02)

The handiest thing I had to hand that I could chuck some paint on and finish, as I am appallingly slow at getting anything painted.

Something is actually done and off my table, er, this year  ::)

And yes I am no photographer.. sorry about that.

I cannot match to the level of other entries here, they just - wow.

I must dig that chaos knight out, I have it somewhere, always wanting to get to them.

Also they have apparently now re-issued the CA4 stuff as well now - hope it still counts   :o

Well, as far as I can see, you have done a sterling job - great face, and well-balanced choice of colours. Nothing to not like about it!  :)

I must dig that chaos knight out, I have it somewhere, always wanting to get to them.

Oh, yes, please do!  ;D

The last couple of pages are giving me an itch to dig out more old Citadel stuff, but I know myself well enough to know, that the minis I already have lined up are more than I can manage to get done before this party ends...  ::)

Built up from white to Necromancer cloak (basically almost black, my new favourite paint colour lol )

Great effects on those elementals Beefcake. Just for future reference the rules do state 'a single miniature'. You've done yourself out of three day's worth of entries! I can see a logic in including the two contrasting elementals. In this instance it would be a little churlish to not count it as lot of work has been done. Don't do it again though  lol

I'm not sure that is a C18 vampire, as I thought the C18 undead were all solid bases? It looks more like the late 90's Vampire Counts range, no?
Title: Re: The Old School Fantasy Painting Party
Post by: Tactalvanic on September 26, 2018, 04:41:43 PM
Original C18s Undead range were solid based.

The later expanded C18 night horrors were slotta.

So it is C18 Night Horrors vamp

But is not C18 Undead vamp

I like, especially how his cloak is muddy/dirty on the bottom is a nice touch of detail, brings it together with the basing colors.

Although I keep thinking he is going to start counting...

Post by: Elk101 on September 26, 2018, 04:51:48 PM
You're right about the C18 Night Horrors range being slotta bases, I've got a few of those. I still don't recognise it from that range, I enjoy identifying old figures and I want to know what it is now!  lol

Title: Re: The Old School Fantasy Painting Party
Post by: Tactalvanic on September 26, 2018, 08:52:22 PM
Nope, I am not right enough

lost minies, they have under night horrors generically,

http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Night_Horrors#Vampires

but Citidel catalogue:

http://www.solegends.com/citcat1991b/cat1991bp311ethereals-02.htm

Its listed under Ethereals, along with some previous 'night horrors'

Cannot find it earlier so far than 91

But, its clear that in the 1989 catalogues there are two pages of night horrors:

https://archive.org/stream/1996CitadelMiniaturesCatalogue19861991/1989%20-%20Citadel%20Miniatures%20Catalogue%20Part%20Two#page/n37

But no 'Ethereals', and no Vampire no. 5

by 1991 however a number of 'night horrors' become 'ethereals' and there he is:

https://archive.org/stream/1996CitadelMiniaturesCatalogue19861991/1991%20-%20Citadel%20Miniatures%20Catalogue%20Section%20Two#page/n151

Sorry for the delay in answer, and the additional confusion and all  that.

Interestingly in some of the 'collectors' books they have done they list the old 'out of production' vampires that can be collected, including numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6.

they don't mention 5.... o_o

Oh hum at least he exists briefly in 91 poor OOP bugger

Is that enough to know now?

That was so stimulating I think I might try some train spotting to calm down...

Great work on the elementals and gorgon, beefcake, and the vampire, Tatalvanic!

The various ethereal and night horrors listings are interesting: I'd forgotten that they recycled the old RQ storm demon into the night horrors, though I did remember the portly broo!

The LotR barrow wights ended up in the ethereals range, I was interested to see.

Those, along with the Chaos familiars and Gothic Horror ranges are some of my favourites.

No. 56: C15 Orc "shock trooper", aka "Gashcog".

This is a peculiar little fellow. I'd never seen him in the lead before espying him on eBay the other week. He belongs to Citadel's  best range of orcs, in my opinion: the slottabased C15 range that the Perrys did before handing over orc duties to Kev Adams.

What's interesting about him is that he's an extremely close fit with the three Orcs of the Red Eye that Citadel released for the Lord of the Rings range, also in 1985. He's far more akin to those orcs than to his C15 peers:

Gashcog has the same beak-nosed helmet, the same hairy breeches and the same short stature and crouching stance - all of which show that someone was paying close attention to Tolkien's text. I presume he was sculpted either as part of that group initially or as a 'test run'.

Yes, it's just the original flat shield (you can see it here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=77384.msg1404875#msg1404875)). That's another thing I really like about this range; although they have slottabases, they don't have Citadel's plastic shields, which, though nice in theory, are a huge pain in reality (bosses that don't fit, less area to paint, etc.). And they're even more of a pain now, as the shields themselves are scarce.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't consider figures from the 90s to be "Old School." I would have set the cut-off earlier. 1997 feels like yesterday to me. Tony Blair, Princess Di, Chumbawamba. That wasn't very long ago, was it?  :)

No. 59 Maze City Gallows and Hanging Man

Slightly intimidated to be posting in this thread given the quality on display, but here goes...!

A macabre mini from an old Acropolis miniatures line. Pre-dates my entry into the hobby so no nostalgia here, just liked the figure - for use as scenery in skirmish or D&D games.

I haven't managed to date the original figure release (probably late '80s?), though this is a recent casting from the Baggage Train. I believe the tabs listed the sculptor as Paul Henni, but I cut them off a while ago so I could be misremembering.

Thanks, both!

The shade of green just seems to work well for those figures.

Oddly enough, I didn't use any green on the skin. It's Citadel's Averland Sunset (yellow), shaded with sepia and highlighted in Vallejo's silver-grey (equivalent to Wytch Elf Flesh). I did use a dark-blue wash around the eyes, which lends a greenish tinge.

#65 - Banquo (Citadel c1985 'The Tragedy of McDeath')

The first time I painted this model years ago I chickened out and painted him without the tartan. This time around I thought that was churlish (it's only a little bit and it's a simple enough pattern) and he looks all the better for the correct colour scheme.

o_o that's a simple tarten, eh? Looks amazing to me.

Compared to some of the horrors I've had to paint over the years, it was a doddle! Thin brush, thin paint, bit of patience, that's all it takes.

Everything in this thread has been terrific. I'm glad I slipped in early while things were still busy so I could hide my relatively modest job in the crowd!  lol

Cubs' work on The Tragedy of McDeath has been the highlight for me, and really sums up the thread. Terrific paint jobs on such a weird old bit of GW history.

Thats a very nice mini with an awesome paintjob. How does it compare sizewise to other citadel stuff. Is it more of a 25mm or heroic 28?
Title: Re: The Old School Fantasy Painting Party
Post by: Cubs on October 06, 2018, 10:14:29 PM
Thanks dudes, it's a pretty easy figure to paint in fairness - most of it is the mail hauberk.

Size-wise these McDeaths are … urm … probably bigger than your old school 25mm but smaller than the heroic scale 28mm, so kind of in the middle.

#69 - Een McWrecker (Citadel c1985 'The Tragedy of McDeath')

If you're wondering if you imagined this being earlier in the queue, no, you're not. It has been reposted to abide by the 'one entry per day' rule. I am now once again on the side of the angels.

He's a pain in the arse this one, because he is festooned with loads of poorly defined paraphernalia dangling from various bits. His hat in particular is a haven for tiny shapes and I have had to guess what they are. The thing I have painted as a melty candle on his hat may be something else entirely, but it looked like a melty candle to me, so that's what I'm going with.

What I love about these old models (well, the good old ones … some of the old mins we used to get were shite, let's be honest) is that they have such hidden beauty in them. It's not like the new stuff where the detail is all sculpted on and basically all you need is a base coat and wash to bring it out. That's good and all and I'm sure a help for quick painting, but it doesn't allow for any sort of artistic expression. These old models give scope for a bit of invention - the basic proportions and shape of the faces (for example) are there, but you can paint the same model several times and coax a different sort of emotion or detail out of it. They're little treasure boxes of delight just waiting to be unlocked.

#72  Ral Partha, Wizard casting spell with wand from the Wizards and Clerics II box set.

Not sure on the date of the sculpt, should have noted that before affixing it to the base, but the boxed set seems to have been introduced in the 1982 Ral partha catalog.

Hmmm, not happy at all with the quality of the pic.  Can't seem to get a good resolution pic.

My wee contribution to the comp, an old fave, one of the bone armour chaos warriors (I think their are three). Happy with the result, tried using nihilakh oxide for the first time which worked out decently.

No. 75 Frodo (or is it Alfred E. Neuman?)  8)

From the Citadel 1980's range Lord of the Rings ME-13. Frodo is quite a nice sculpt (although I had a slight miscasting through the right eye), but the pony is a beautiful, fantastic little model. Creating the base was real fun avoiding grass tufts at all ...

#77 - Ogre Warlord - Citadel C23 1985

One of Jes Goodwin's many, many, finest sculpts, and one I've coveted for a while.

First proper mini I've painted in a while, been undercoated for years...

This guy's intended to be a hero for a dungeon / adventuring party, but he's still an ogre so I thought something suggestive of a Roman centurian would convey a disciplined roughness. Not very happy with the varnish so I might well touch him up later! (Up Pompeii anyone?)

#80 - Grenadier Orcs of the Severed Hand: chief

I picked up all but one of the Orcs of the Severed Hand on eBay earlier this year. But this chap was missing. I wasn't too bothered, as he was my least favourite of the lot. But he then turned up individually and cheaply on eBay, so I snapped him up. I painted him this evening, and he's grown on me a bit.

I think these orcs would make quite decent RuneQuest dark trolls; they're big enough to be about 7' tall if they stood up straight, which I believe is the appropriate size for the Uz. Also, the goblins that match these orcs make great trollkin.

#82 - Dokko McCoughlagan (Citadel c1985 'The Tragedy of McDeath')

This handsome chap is the Laird of the McCoughlagan clan (now wipe your mouth), fighting for Donalbane. Some like to paint him with the Donalbane arms on his shield, but I prefer to leave it as a plain deep red, as the (very small) illustrations in the McDeath scenario pack suggest. Besides, it looks better I think.

#84 - Harkness Knight (Citadel c1985 'The Tragedy of McDeath')

My final contribution to the party, I promise I'll stop hogging it now and leave room for other people in the final furlong. I wanted to accentuate the nice shiny green armour and dull down the shield a little; with such a bold colour scheme for the heraldry it might have looked too cartoony and swamped the whole figure otherwise. I've always thought these guys have such chiselled and angular features, they'd make good Elf knights.

Fantastic work, everyone. I do have a soft spot for those Goodwin elves.

Quick question, in the faint hope I actually finish something: by "pre-2000", do we mean that the casting itself must be from that period, or can we use more recent castings of venerable sculpts?
Title: Re: The Old School Fantasy Painting Party
Post by: Elk101 on October 14, 2018, 12:50:34 PM
As long as the original sculpt is pre 2000 we have already agreed that more recent castings, providing they are legitimately done, are acceptable. People have already submitted GW official casts of old minis.

No. 91 Radagast

Mark Copplestone's fantastic sculpt from the late Eighties/early Nineties Grenadier "Fantasy Warriors" range set: 1433 Wizards and Priests. For me it was always Radagast the Brown, but the original had only the raven sculpted. So I added the rabbit (from a Reaper set) and the owl (from a set I can't remember ...).

(Not a Painting Party entry) Ral Partha Necromancer

Hi everyone, this is my first attempt at posting pics of my lads. I really wanted to get this guy into the party. He is one of the three Ral Partha Necromancers.

The reason I wanted to get him on here was because the original figure from my youth (this is a recast I bought and painted up a few years ago), was painted by my best buddy and gave me many happy hours of Dungeon Crawls and City State visits as Ista Flervit, magic user supreme!

I claim Ista was the first MU to cast fireball through a keyhole......

(Not a Painting Party entry) Metal Magic Forest Giant

Well, that last one worked, so I will try another. This is a Metal Magic Forest Giant, I love it because of the posture (lope, lope) and that it is a single cast with so much detail.

Bought from the now defunct Dragon and the George in Glasgow, and was recently killed many times over as I took my son, my best mate, and his sons through the "Against the Giants" killfests.

As you are a new member and probably unfamiliar with the Painting Club rules I will leave the miniatures in but remove their numbering so they will, unfortunately, not count.

You should definitely get your miniatures on a thread for us all to enjoy though, you look like you've got some great stuff.

Lovely stuff, everyone (official entries and otherwise - that necromancer and giant are terrific)!

#92 Num-Tin, giant hobgoblin champion, from Bryan Ansell's Chaos Marauders (with a nose greenstuffed by me after the original got a bit bashed). Forgive the second shot - the fact that he's looking upward makes him hard to photograph.

(not an entry) The Cthonian aka Carnivorous Worm, from RAFM's Call of Cthulhu line, which I believe is from the 1990s.

#93 Prince Ulther - Citadel, 1987

A Perry's sculpt from the glorious, eponymous, Regiment of Renown.

I started off with Barristan Selmy in mind, and then I started painting the dragon bit (the axe is horrible to paint) and, well, had a different idea. I reckon the shield needs more battle damage but it was the first bit of freehand in a long time and imma need to build confidence before touching it again.

#95 Barbarian - Grenadier Fantasy Warriors (Mark Copplestone 1991/2)

I already have a load of the Grenadier Barbarians painted as several HoTT armies.  This is one of my favourites, so I had to paint another casting for the Party.

That grenadier barbarian range has got to be my favourite overall range. Nicely done. Love the job on long arm as well.

That barbarian is a great figure and that’s a lovely paint job Paul. I had another one of these (the standard bearer) ready to go, but I don’t think I’m going to paint him in time to beat the 100 ;)

I've got some things almost finished but I might leave the slots for someone new.
How do we add the badge by the way. Is there a file we get or something?

FS56 Citadel Village Idiot, Fantasy Specials, (1983 and possibly earlier*)

Painted as the jester for my Feudal project

Anymore info about this mini would be good to know. I’ve seen an example with a finger touching the mouth but I fear I cut that away during cleaning up, thinking it was flash  ::)

No. 100 Games Workshop's (Citadel, actually) 1994 Grom the Paunch
A new cast of the original 1990s (c. 1994 I believe) GW model, using the original moulds, reissued for sale by GW.
Assuming this counts, as discussed at the start of the thread.

He actually comes with a chariot and Niblit, his standard bearer, but I wanted to use him as a standing character, so here he is.

PS - I noticed the wiry bit of extra metal on his right boot just now after I posted the photo!
I corrected it, but that's how he'll stay here, as submitted, warts and all.

Darn, I've been toiling in the garden all week, and went to the local 'not' Harry Potter Festival with the girls last couple of days, so now I have a half-finished old GW thug sitting on my pain(t) station  lol

Lots of great old minis, again, in the last couple of pages!  :)

He shows up in the '83 catalog (with finger in mouth) but they didn't list sculptors or anything at that point.

A fine job painting him and a nice sculpt for the period.

Apparently a twice popular theme. Fantasy, which I think is the most popular board LAF. And  since most of us are old farts by now, vintage toys are in high regard.  :)

I'll be honest, this one was right up my alley. I could live with this every month of the year! I live in the vintage Citadel nostalgia zone and the only things holding me back from posting more are, a) the actual paying work (I got lucky this time that they overlapped), and b) my shame at taking up too many slots!

I live in the past and I refuse to apologise!

When the blood moon rises over the fifth peak and the waters run black, when the sun reaches its apex and shines on the sacred ruins.

No idea yet, we normally don't run one club immediately into another so there will probably be a bit of a gap. It also depends on people's appetite for another club so soon, particularly on the same board.
