Cheers everyone!
Just to test out my little printer (a SparkMaker - i would reccomend it for its price if you're OK with messing around with a LOT of mechanical issues, otherwise go for a fancier model!), i did sketch some simple 6mm tanks, and printed them out.
I made two chassis variations, plus one for a missile system of some kind.

That said, the print went nicely, and the result showed all the details of the original model. A bit chubbier and softer, not as good as a professional print, but at least there are no print-lines!

With a first coat with the airbrush, it's blending nicely with the rest of my forces (Ground Zero Games, mostly).

The original design took around one hour tops. The variants yeah, fairly little. The rockets maybe another 20 mins, as i wanted them to look nice. :)
It's quite a rough design, but it does its job! :)

I'm printing the rocketlaunchers today, let's see if the tiny little tips will come out well! :)
I'm still undecided whether to release the designs (with others) for free or to sell them to some company. We'll see. :)

It may be worth looking at selling them through Shapeways, assuming they pass their tests. They're small enough that they shouldn't be too expensive.
I'm not sure you'd make a huge amount, but more than you'll make if you put the designs on thingiverse :D

My point here exactly, selling the STL or the prints is not an option for me. I'm seriously annoyed by the large amount of low-quality 3D stuff being sold on SW and as STLs around. People are pouring money out of the hobby for this bubble, and the actual people doing the serious work (sculptors and companies) are losing income thanks to that.
I usually sell my 3Ds to companies that cast them (as i do with my physical sculpts), but I'm considering with some fellow sculptors to start a collection of ranges of free 3D models, to discourage people from buying cheap STLs in quickly cobbled together kickstarters.
Sort of a pro-bono thing, but honestly I'd rather help a bit this fragile community rather than making a few bucks out of quickly made models.
It's sort of a vague idea for now, but we're three for now and hopefully more will come. :)

It's a very easy software to begin with. Then it becomes frustrating to improve, then easy again.

I'm using the Anycubic grey resin. The LCD-T isn't awesome, and the N is messy, i had some decent results with that but still.

Moreover, i did replace the screw nut, swapped the LCD with the glass and replaced the FEP film.
Now it's working good! :)

I remember something about GHQ circumventing the issue with details disappearing in their tiny 6mm metal tanks by making them far larger than they would be to scale, mostly rivets which would be three times larger or even more so they are prominently visible at this scale. Maybe that's something to consider when creating the 3d models for printing as well.

Thanks! It's something i always do when modelling. In fact, most of what i do couldn't be just "rescaled" to other scales and work as well. I keep the polygons to a low level and dthe details as exxagerated as possible. :)
The printer itself is very nice. Any SLA-DLP printer can achieve this quality, the increasing price is more due to reliability and speed. Of course, when you go tenfold up, the quality is much better too. :)
Still, for a 200 euros kickstarter, i'm happy. :)

More designs in the works! APCs and heavier tanks. Some long range cannons too.
The heavy version of the tanks above has a taller hull and a much larger turret. I guess it'll be slower, but it's not a big deal:

As a bonus, I've spent the weekend in Sofia, Bulgaria. They have an amazing War Museum, and their soviet tanks collections is impressive. Lots of nuclear missile launchers too! :)

Very cool designs.
I really need to get on this 3D Printing and Modelling band wagon. I feel like I really wasted my time learning how to sculpt (even if it is still a pretty crude level) and should have focused on Sketch-up instead.

In my opinion, 3D modelling is just another tool in the arsenal. I rarely produce masters with out of the printer stuff,as the hand work for weathering and damaging is incomparable. Still, knowing a bit of 3d is indeed useful!

Adding some infantry to my forces! Models from GZG, bases are custom lasercuts on PETG, with holes drilled to fit the infantry slots and allow a more flat ground.
The bases are larger in area than the standard EPIC ones, but still within the rules. This way I could add some serious terrain and "feel" to each base, which is what is generally lacking entirely from most of the Epic armies.

I also tested the first base with a simple colour scheme, to go with the rest of my tanks: Green shades with bright red spots. In this scale, having clearly identifiable models is more visually appealing than sheer realism.

I do like the look of these. I know what you mean about standard sized epic infantry bases, you just about squeeze the models on and that's it. I'm generally liking bigger bases these days, but haven't tried it for epic figures yet.
This may sound weird, but I actually like the unpainted bases more. I think there is more contrast between the figures, the ruins and the bases. I get what you are trying to do with the painted one, but figures blend to the base colour too much (in my view!). Also the red car probably needs more dirt and rust, if the ruins are so old that there are plants growing over them, then the car needs to look similarly aged.

I see what you mean: I added the red bright backpacks to have them pop out more, and in flesh they tend to be more visible anyways.
Something that has been pointed out is that i shouldn't have red elements other than the actual figures: if the car was blue (and rusty?), the blending would be reduced, probably. :)

It took me a while to upgrade the SparkMaker with the new screen, and the upgrade itself did not go smoothly. Eventually though, I managed to do some better prints! Still amateurish, but the tanks are sharper than before. :)

While printing some new stuff (and disperately trying to find some more design ideas for future sculpts), here some excellent Ground Zero Games figures just painted.
For the base colors, i tried mixing a grey contrast paint with some Army Painter black ink. The result was remarkably good!

I should paint a LOT of bases now, i have enough for all my figures three-fold, but it's better to make more and use them later rather than finding yourself trying to replicate a style you don't remember how to do anymore.

As for the shanty, it's a project for GameCraft minatures, so there's gonna be some more concepting involved! :)

Yeah, the Anycubic is a great printer . So is the Elegoo Mars.

Yes, i'm really not sold on 28mm or even 15mm figures, but for 6mm they are just the best solution! :)
More designs and prints tonight... i'd love to do some manual sculpting too, but i need some concrete sculpts to wreck first! ^_^

A very simple model i did yesterday evening, and printed in the night. The two parts of the building are indeed separate pieces, but they do stack nicely.
The ladders... are the very reason why 3D printing has a sense: making stuff that cannot be casted.

Thanks, I've got a lot of concepts that could be done. Each needs some printing iterations to fine-tune the details and parts, but that is not impossible. I'm more worried about the bureaucracy and the fiscal issues, especially being based in Italy.

Thank you all! It'll be a few weeks wait, since I'm now in chengdu and headed for the sichuan's tibet. By the end of November i will have the model painted, and hopefully many more in my concepts book. Yeah, I did start one! :)

Back from Tibet! I indeed worked on several new concepts, but for now i'm just back to some painting.
I grabbed one contrast color (now i have two!) for the yellow, and tried it on my last batches of printed tanks. Compared to the previous versions, the new printer screen allows a higher definition, and that is reflected on the printed shapes and the effect of washes on them.
All in all, the resulting effect is pretty good.
For this first piece, i tried to highlight the edges on one side of the model. The effect was good, but it took far too much time.

I've already done a few more iterations, i'll post some more results once i'll have found my final workflow!

Nice. The edge highlighting certainly lifts the model - can you do a quicker version with a dry brush along the corner of the hulll?

I've been experimenting more to cut off the times - for this project, i really don't want to spend time in detailing, i just want to add the two base colors for the details and then work with global effects (washes and drybrushes)
Right now i've reached this:
- grey-white airbrush
- Contrast (Iyander yellow)
- drybrush(wetbrush almost) of warcolours "yellow 4" (warcolours are eccellent glazes!), twice, until fully saturated.
- white drybrush, very light, to highlight the edges and desaturate a bit.

The result is pretty great imho, and it took me about 50 minutes for the 12 tanks. I reckon i could finish them entirely in about 2 extra hours, if not less.
And i'm quite happy with the tank designs too: the details really pop out!

Yeah that’s really effective! I always do one last spot highlight, literally dots just on the corners, which helps them pop. These look fantastic though - I really think 6mm is a great place for contrast.

Thanks! Yes, highlighting might work (and i might consider doing that ) but takes time, and i want to have the best result with "global" actions such as washes and drybrushes. I'll add more details tonight, we'll see where this goes.
As for the buildings: for now i'm still gathering concepts. And I still have to figure out the legal aspects of this. Worst case scenario, i will sell the files to a company.

I've started painting the main battle tanks (i've got 15 on the workbench) with the very same colour scheme. Meanwhile i've done a simple sketch for some infantry i'd love to sculpt soon.

The long skirt is pretty useful when you're printing in 6mm: the ankles tend to be the weak point, and below the skirt you can add additional supports for the minis during play without being noticeable.
let's see how difficult it will be to model these.

Aaand... the first infantry pieces are done! Not good enough, but being the first time printing my own infantry, i had a lot to gauge!
That said, the real "star" of the printing were the bipedal robots i modelled a few years ago: they never saw the light, but now i can finally have them in hand!
and... I have to say, they do look great!

The walkers are still missing the legs: i've put just volume blocks, but they have to be modelled entirely.
Also, for 6mm i will need to re-do some details, probably.
As for the infantry: yes, i've doubled the head (almost) and changed some other proportions. Now they do look better, and i've got some being printed as we speak!

Well, here comes the update:
I painted one of the mechs. The print lines are ...inadequate for me, but that's due to the bad alignment of the model on the bed (a lot of pixel showing due to slightly diagonal faces!). I will cut it in parts and print it properly, so next models will be better!

If you are re-doing the infantry with bigger heads anyways what about more life to their poses? Have a bit of bent leg and aiming weapons, maybe crouching. I doubt prone and not knowing their intended weapons I can't comment on heavy weapons poses. The figure standing akimbo makes no sense to me, unless it is somehow posable after manufacture.

The akimbo figure is the "t-pose" which is the way it's sculpted. I am now only testing proportions, the proper posing will come later! And yeah, it will be far more dynamic! :D

I am ignorant of 3D sculpting. Personally I really like the infantry figures more than the giant robots but that is my preference for troops in 6mm. They really have detail at that scale. Great work.

New iteration of the infantry come out a bit better. The bottom half of the figure is still ways too stiff, but at least they are solid now and don't break. :D

Now there is more life in the figures on the left. My thoughts were to put a connection between the legs all the way to the base and another web between the legs and the "skirt" or the between leg web and the skirt in order to strengthen things. Personally a solid web between the legs and the skirt which occupies 50% or so of the cross sectional area would be very acceptable and may be needed to cast these figures.
Assuming these are masters would you cast the "infantry" in resin or metal?

I already added a block between the feet, so that they are far more stable once based!
However, my goal is not to cast them: I see people 3D print a lot, but while often they don't cast their pieces, their geometries are always simple. By aiming at people with printers, i want to make designs that have intricate enough undercuts to be impossible to cast instead. Look at these shields: these are what give the infantry their tridimensionality. And that's a huge difference and the only true advantage compared to lead!

They look great. Really crisp, and detailed looking, can't see any banding from the printing.

There are some slight banding on the bodies, and some nasty ones on the sides of the legs. But totally acceptable, IMHO. :)
A better printing would have done a better job, but all things considered i think that the latest iteration solved most of the issues!
Now trying to print some stuff in 15mm too! :)

Thank you! :) The print bed is small, i had to do some tetris. Of course it'd be more efficient to print only legs in one bed, then only bodies and so forth. We'll see. :)
Jack would be a bit self-referenced (i'm jack!), scar could work. Maybe not enough buggy for that? Numbers - definitely a good option!

Yes, I mostly use sketchup for mech design. It's incredibly immediate compared to pretty much all the other software, and i've been using it since forever so i'm pretty fast with that. :)
Having a concept drawing beforehand helps a lot too, of course. :)

I am curious about the black (dark) car. It has the look of generic 1960s to early '70s. Is that one of your doing, a metal casting or?? In any case a bunch of them for some imaginations back water location would do great. Thank you.

Thank you! Yes, the damage in 6mm is easily brought to the "heavy armor attack" point which is too much. In fact, most of the "light" dents should represent the damage concrete gets just by being there. No weapon, just machinery moving and making mistakes over the years.
As for the damages on the railings: i realized some of the parts were too thin, and they broke when i was cleaning the silos. I guess i used that to my advantage.
The car is something i made about a year ago, and was modelled following the design of the Trabant. Ended up more like a Lada, which is pretty similar anyways. :)

Just a quick update regarding the terrain. I made containers (the ones included in the piece in the last page - but improved a bit) and i'm now casting several in resin. Ideally, the next step terrain-wise would be to make a containers field!

This stuff looks gorgeous, obviously. But it does strike me as being almost unplayable, because there's no room to place based miniatures on it without having to place on top of your lovely design work.
Do you intend it to be on a gaming table, or is it purely a modelling project for your own entertainment?

Thanks! :) Well, the problem is Epic Armageddon related: In there units move in pretty large formations (although i'm hoping to find a way to trim the sizes down), so "cityfight" is not a thing anyways. At that point, there are types of terrain that count as passable for infantry and not tanks, but they still require large areas to move the numerous bases.
At that point, i'm considering these pieces as "impassable terrain", or objectives. Conversely, i'll have rubbles areas, or containers fields for playable terrain.
For skirmish gaming i go 28mm anyways! :)

It's nice to see that with forethought, you've still left enough open space should you end up re-using these for a game with smaller model bases and that that space would be multilevelled and highly interactive.

Ok, definitely NOT scifi, but since it's indeed a test for future scifi figures, i'm gonna post this here:
I managed to sculpt a human figure, rig it and make a few poses for it.
Then i made some VERY BASIC armor and details, and BOOM, i got over-detailed 6mm figures.
I am quite confident that by adding the proper details you could go very far with this approach.

Blender is really powerful, and while not the best for anything is good enough for a lot of stuff, and has EVERYTHING available. Also, free.
For this kind of project i basically made a simple human shape, with the sculpt tool i shaped it, and then i added some hard surface elements (which i'd rather do in Sketchup, but for 6mm these are simple enough to be made in Blender.
Posing, however, is a true pleasure, once you get a few silly rules to follow! :)

Imagine hordes of nids , like ripper swarms.

Painted the robot! well, at least one. The painting took a bit less than an hour, but i reckon that by using the wise amount of serialization I could paint multiple pieces in about 20 minutes each!

The technique was the same I used for the IFV: contrasts, drybrush of the main color, details then white drybrush. Here a scale shot with some 6mm troops and tanks.

As for rescaling the towers, i guess it is possible but they would be VERY fragile once printed (but it can be a non-problem i guess)

Scales with robot have relatively little meaning. But i upscaled them 160% (see the pages before this one) and they work pretty well for 28mm too! For 15mm, the robots at 100% work pretty darn well. probably not for "manned" machines, but as big tough 4-meters-tall robots they work pretty great! :)

There might be a service locally where I could get them done, but I haven’t looked into it. I wonder if maybe a lot of other war gamers are in a similar situation in relation to 3D printing technology and don’t have easy access yet. Give it a couple years and that will change, though!

That's a very common situation, true, BUT I'm comparing the results of this set with the others i have on the store, which are selling pretty well instead. It could be the period (upcoming US elections, new lockdown coming to most countries), the theme (cool robots, there are already around) or the target (epic players want to play with canon setting, battletech players have free stl options out there already)... I don't know, really. But feels weird.

Hah! Well, the island thing is scratchbuilt! You can always add some resin terrain to it! :P

about 4 years ago I re-sculpted with slight modifications the old 15mm infantry i did 5-6 years ago in 6mm. I never tried printing some, so I did and i painted them quickly.

The spaced armour doubling as storage (often for something in bulk that can be sacrificed, like water or oil) covering the tracks is very modern and keen. Good eye for adding something like that.

That would be mental! That's exactly the philosophy I try to follow when modelling - uncastable but not unpaintable.

Really makes you wonder where this industry is going. 3D printing is bound to make existing business models just unworkable sooner or later, and the more I see work like this the more I think "sooner" is practically here already.

In a sense, it's quite a pity, since some traditional sculptors are simply incredible.
On the other hand... so be it. Those sculptors already proved to be just as talented with 3D medium, and if this allows for cooler stuff it's great.
The problem i see is in the long run. Now i've done a crab mecha, which looks cool. Nothing too original, but it has the wow factor.
In 5 years, i'm sure that many others (including people better than me) will probably do a similar thing, and people will be more and more discouraged to do more.
In traditional sculpting you have molds getting damaged, here everything is persistent. I'm not sure how further we can all go with this.
(spoiler: it could well be "forever", since people will more and more start buying the new idea just because it's new and follows a trend).

I suspect we'll always have hand-sculpted minis on the market, but they may transition from being the norm (which they really already aren't in many ways) to being niche "prestige" items where the selling point is the fact that they weren't created with softwar.

Not to detract from the originality of your work, but broadly similar mecha/walker vehicle minis have been around for decades. They crop up in several Weird WW2 ranges, GZG has 15mm and even 25mm spider walkers, I'm pretty sure I've seen clockwork/steampunk ones, and both DP9 and Darkest Star have some anime-inspired designs as well. The idea isn't new, but your execution of it has a new look and a very strong aesthetic. I think as home printing and the software behind it continues to mature and become more user-friendly we'll see a steady increase in what's out there. 90% of it will probably live down to Sturgeon's Law, but that won't stop people from trying.
Seems particularly likely that we'll see a modding community arise, where people take commercial (or free) STL files and tweak them into exactly what they want, then share the files online so others can use their designs - or further tweak them. Could be a real golden age where you can make exactly the minis you've always wanted yourself, and at home no less - but I do wonder where the existing manufacturers are going to fit into that model in years to come.

For ex, I found this on Thingiverse with five seconds worth of searching but it doesn't change the fact you still went and made your own take on crab mechs - and ones that look better than the one at the link, I might add. I fully expect people will continue to tackle subjects that have been done by others already, making something that makes their personal version simply because they can - just like you did.

Oh, that would be... interesting. The only way i see that happening is by modifying the files in meshmixer, "fattening" them more. It would be a hard trade-off: either undetailed or too fragile! :S

Hell yeah! The cool think of container yards is that with few parts you can really fill a table, and change the map every time while always looking realistic. Can't wait to see what people will do with it!

They look nice, but quite as striking as the yellow spider-walker force from earlier in the thread. Then again, they're also gray figs being photographed against a very similar background rather than being, well, yellow. And spidery. :)
The big mech reminds me a little of one of the figs from WETA Workshop's GKR: Heavy Hitters game.

Thanks! I generally keep all my pieces slightly rotated to avoid horizontal beams. Note that all of the stuff is PRE-SUPPORTED, and tested on a photon S. :P

It was certainly intended as such. Those things are gorgeous, and their style's virtually unique. Closest I can think of are a few of GZG's 15mm drone weapon platforms, and even those have a very different look.
Plus, painting yellow well is always a strong flex. :)

I find myself annoyed that Dropzone Commander went with 10mm all over again, their Resistance figure range has a similar ramshackle look to everything but, y'know, wrong damn scale for Epic/Dirtside goodness.

Well, John Deere Green seems pretty popular for real world CTA Yellow alternatives, with bright yellow wheel hubs. Also a mid-to-light orange (don't know the name of it) that's presumably for max visibility same as the yellow. All suitably filthy and rusted, given the post-apoc thing. Rust oranges and browns would contrast well with the green.
If you wanted something subtler, maybe have them in an unevenly applied military green top coat with patches of the original CAT Yellow and rusty metal showing through where it's been scraped off?

Well, that's adorable. The turquoise looks fine, although I'd dirty it up a bit myself. Hard to do in small scales without losing the color, though.
I always wanted to see more Orky/Skinner/Junker walkers that had actual track units for feet (at the end of articulated legs, of course). Ridiculous engineering, of course, but it would fit the already absurd "gargant" motif. I suspect that desire is partially colored by an old Heartbreaker-era Warzone fig that had a prosthetic leg in that style.

About 11x9 cm. it's small. I've got another "L-shaped" row of houses in the works, then I'll have to do another few blocks and individual buildings. I'll likely mix them with the Shanty buildings too for variety!

While taking breaks from the painting of the two new blocks, some updates on FSD. I managed to get rid of the only remaining table in the game, the vehicles damage chart!
Now vehicles will have unique behaviours (well, to a point), which is a great way to characterize them without anything more to memorize!

Cables are soldering tin! They sell it for cheap of various sizes, it's soft enough to keep the shape (unlike copper wire), highly recommended!

And if you want to integrate it with some resin cast terrain, there's the whole White Dragon Miniatures terrain range (when not out of stock) that I sculpted before home 3D printers were a thing!

I don't think that at this point FDM is that much cheaper than resin. My Anicubic grey goes for 25-30$ per liter, and a 15mm version of these buildings wouldn't take more than 1-2$ of resin. Of course, it must fit on the plate, which is not the case for the largest ones. But still.

For those asking for 15mm, I've upscaled to 12mm /144 scale for heavy gear and the details and proportions hold up amazingly. The asian cities have been done the same with by others and they beat most other scenery available in the scale IMHO.

Correct! The tricky part is being able to show quite a bit of information on each card without being cluttered. This way i can add a lot of variety and character to different units, but the user won't need to skim through a wall of text to get the info needed for the specific action.
I have fairly high hopes on this game, and people seem to like it. We'll see when we go beta! =)

I have also gotten another similar rules set from someone else and when asking similar questions the attitude seems to be, well we know what I mean so why don't you. Not exactly but the answers are as wishy washy unclear as the original rules. Unimpressed. Sangennaru is NOT that guy. Good job listening and correcting where needed.

Right at the start of this thread you said you were using a SparkMaker for printing. Are you still on that or have you changed up? I have never thought about the idea of a digital printer but if I could get one that prints like those shanties or that radio dish...

The Sparkmaker has been decommissioned about half a year ago, now we're using two Anycubic Photon S. That's still a very old and cheap printer, pretty much behind anything available now. So yeah, any printer (except for some super cheap ones) would be able to print this stuff with the same level of detail or more! :)

I'm currently working through the large set of shanties. I think i'll settle with half of them painted ,the rest will have to wait a bit more as i'll focus on some new pieces instead first. Maybe some more Medina pieces would do.
I also have to start focusing on the other factions, that would require some focus as well. :)

Wow! that is absolutely awesome. Just a question, have you thought about a foot bridge or one for vehicles to span over those canyon gaps? Only because seeing the gas station, as to where it is at. I love to see what kind of idea you could come up with if you do.

TLF's other sculptor did those already! I just haven't painted some yet, so they were not included in the picture. That's indeed one of the many elements still to add to the table! Good point, though!

If I may suggest, I would personnally put that turret on an elongated 8 wheel design ( medium tank ) & put a smaller turret ( apc) on it .

I like that design a lot. For me it has a vibe like a futuristic version of a '50s British vehicle like a Saracen or Saladin. Sort of the same company's design for a similar application 70+ years later on. Or on another world 200+ years later. Great job, thank you for posting it.

Thanks! The models target 6-15mm (and i realize it's probably better for 15), i'm sure it could work in 28 but as always it'd be a bit chubby.
Yeah, I'm definitely going to mix up turrets a bit more - the slot is the same and people can glue them as they please!

Thanks!! The whole design shape was taken from several illustrations online (first of all https://www.artstation.com/kondratovich ) but it clearly mimics the strikers that are around now. Larger vehicles won't have a real-life cousin, but i'll try to make them look reasonable too!

It's true! not cheap but feasible. I'm sure there's gonna be plenty of exploitable combos, after a few back-and-fro i'll definitely have to balance it out!

New game, with a good LED light for photos too!
First, a properly built 60 points band my opponent decided to field:

And the battle started! Having played many more games I did the right tactical choices in the first Round and the game didn't last much. But some tense situations were still there.
Here the opponent's Socrates decided to charge face-front my Infantry. Since it did so before I had the chance to move mine i could Transport and unload my heavy infantry in close-combat, which made my MG a lot more effective. While at it, i also could control the objective!

Meanwhile the rest of the table remained almost empty, and my two tanks (with a Tank Commander) managed to reach the second objective (without capturing it - tanks are slow with objectives!) and hit the other large Mech causing it a system reboot (one turn without actions).

At that point i had control of the table, and the rest was just a war of attrition. Having the tanks already in position i could put all of them with ADs placed ready to react, and I had two Scouts to deploy in the first reinforcements wave - this blocked part of the deployment area for my opponent, slowing its reaction even more.
I'm not really good at battle reports - I hope this did the job! =)

Always trying to put a bit of a story to each piece - especially in 6mm it's easy to get the picture! At the end of the day i had to model anew only 20% of the buildings probably, it was a lot more of a job of composing stuff. A lot of that! =)

About that...
Tonight I finished a first draft of the Enlisted infantry. It's a particularly tough job since i'm both learning organic sculpting and playing around to find a convincing design. Not sure if I'm fully convinced, but for the basic infantry those could work.

They look pretty good to me. I think when they’re printed in 6mm they’ll look at least as good as most of the other figures available in the size.
The only thing that doesn’t quite work for me is the hose on the front of the face plate. I think with two connected to the back of the helmet the air supply and return needs would be covered, and I would be frustrated as hell at having the front hose in the way while I was trying to handle my weapons in combat!

All in all the details are all showing, and a single pass of a Contrast paint was enough to highlight all the elements of the figure!
Some minor changes in the style still to do, but i call this a success!

These are Lazy Forger's upcoming 6mm minis upscaled & printed in 18mm.
Quite pleased with the results ( except for some minor misprints, sometimes resin printing is crazy & I tend to over support !!! ).
The detail is quite nice , especially the scopes, gun barrels & mask / breathing pipes.
I learnt something new. There is no need to undercoat water washable resin ( I use Elegoo ) , just a blue black wash ( in this case ) & a dry brush of Citadel grey ( I like how this leaves a really nice matt finish ). Then apply colours . I did these using Contrast & my washes/mixes.

Well, the nice thing of a 6mm project (especially when you can print it all) is that it's EXTREMELY fast to build up.
A game of FSD requires a couple of dozen bases per side, you can ideally print a 60 points faction ready to play in a single printer plate, and paint it over the evening!

It's fairly simple, really. Cutting them at the base, they pivot on the weak point and get away pretty fast!
The only tricky one is on the "neck protection" part, which requires a bit more delicate hands!
Of course, this must be done before curing the model.

Pretty much so!
Granted, handling these models is not as easy as the "supportless" standing napoleonics. But it's far less boring as well! And I'd say it's an extra 20% time of preparation in total, nothing too dramatic!
Plus, if you break one or two it really doesn't change much since you can print more!

You have become quite good using blender.
And to add, broken off parts can be fixed with super glue, though this can be a bit fiddly at times.
Resizing up or down creates loads of new venues but also new problems especially where there are delicate parts.

Experimenting a bit with more styles of buildings.
Trying again with the favelas, this time the hardest part is making it easy to paint - so i directly painted the first and second print attempts.
The latter was good enough to deserve a photoshoot.

Looks good, but I'm tempted to wonder what it might look like if the plaster were slightly tinted to cut down on the white glare. You could go for a very light grey to emulate ordinary mortar, or add a hair of brown if you want a dirtier look (or something in between).
I wouldn't darken it very much of course, just enough to "take the edge off".
At the same time, I'm wondering if maybe the exaggerated contrast works very well on the table and is just overstated by the photos.
Well, you can always experiment to see what you like! :D

Yeah - more experiments are due, and i think i should consider getting a less saturated red tone to begin with. Grey concrete powder would work well instead of the white plaste one as well, so it's definitely worth experimenting more.
Meanwhile, I'll have to start making some more significative shapes for the buildings as well, possibly mixing the designs with corrugated iron roofs and some of the other detailing elements of the shanties.
Ah, and of course more work on the Enlisted army is due!

The main problem with clips is that the "under" parts of prints tends to be blurred, and proper sockets are always a bit complicated to do. We're planning for high-rise buildings, but for individual concrete pillars it would be a bit too difficult!

Works continue, i have finished the light vehicles. Four turret options (more will follow for the heavy vehicles, not sure if i'll keep the same socket though!) and two chassis. Right now i have the light support vehicle and two transport versions. The large chassis will also do for the mobile artillery, with a fair variation of extra turrets for that!

Thanks Z! Actually, there is both! Both sides of the socket also have a 2mm hole to accomodate a magnet, so both can be done! It just doesn't show with the angle in the picture.

First test of the Heavy Artillery - the chassis is the same of the transport, but with a (literally) heavy gun on the back. Heavy enough that it needs extra supports when deployed!

Initially there was a super-smart "click-in" lock, but i realized that depending on the overcuring it could be tricky to remove for players. Right now it simply slides in - there's space for magnets but even without those it stays in position pretty happily, unless you literally flip the tank. :)

Yes! MMF promised us a homepage banner in sync with the release (and a store discount too, in case anyone's interested), but then they went AWOL. Right now we're waiting for a date to set the release, hopefully soon but not too soon, since i've still got stuff to paint! :D

I'm still stunned at your skill with a brush as well... I try but get nowhere close to this level with 6mm stuff.
At this point i've developed my flow, which mostly includes washes and drybrushes and zero layering whatsoever. Doesn't work for 28 (where i do layers upon layers) but for 6mm it's pretty good.
Speaking of pretty good: THE BEHEMOTH IS PAINTED! Like, finished finished!

This a thing of beauty. Think I favor the troop pod version too. Really like the little touch of having the troopers stationed about the deck, just really puts it over the top. You're making it awfully hard to resist building an army of these splendid models. Thanks as always for sharing.

Hehe, while the new approach is faster, i miss the kitbashing. And 3D printing has its own suffering... But yeah, the painter got the file and will start playing with it soon, i'm super curious about that!!!

Laser-cut 24 x 36 mm pieces of 1mm acrylic/PETG. Very efficient and sturdy!
I thought of adding some 3D printable bases, but those wouldn't have worked at all with the warping and all!

You just need a spice harvester and you have the table top equivalent of the old Dune computer game. Perhaps to avoid any potential IP issues you could make it a something else Harvester. Difficult to find a suitable synonym for Spice - Gravy? A Gravy Harvester? The gravy must flow!

That is awesome in so many ways. I love the terrain and how the vegetation is only in the canyons where there would be a little more moisture and protection from the heat. Then having the settlements along the canyons just looks right. That kind of attention to detail makes me happy!

I'm actually quite proud not to have to follow a renown IP to get armies dones, BUT the idea of some mining devices is indeed pretty fascinating. Around 20 pages back in this thread I actually started working on a "mad max on excavators" faction, which will see the light hopefully before the end of the year! =)

Oh, the whole vegetation bit was a lot of fun to do! The texturing and painting, not so much. But we lived to get to the point where the greens had to be added!

For sure, I just loved playing that computer game back in the day (it was one of the first in the whole Command & Conquer style harvest, resources, build and expand style of game). The IP even on that was pretty light apart from faction names and harvesting spice. I think sandworms would also occasionally eat your harvester as well. The presentation of the game was quite 6 mm in style. So the tanks and infantry on screen were about the size you would expect in that scale and your troopers and tanks really remind me of it because of that. Some kind of mining machine would just be cool - sifting unobtanium from the desert sands. Please don't though as I have enough projects on the go!

Haha, i see what you mean about the RTS feel! I try to paint my models with a bright secondary color just like in RTS for that reason, it works very well! =)

Hah, i thought of that but then the implications (sculpting boats? A dock crane? Assuming people would do sea boards?) were far too complicated. No, the container terminal is likely for trucks or a train! :)

Ssso - no miniatures updates, but we managed to finish a few fancy pages in the manual.
The lore introduction was done by the excellent Iain Ross (not a LAFer, IIRC), and the images are made with AI-generated bases and a few hours on photoshop on it.

As for the art as concept - what I've realized so far about IA is that it's great at nailing a feeling or a vibe, but it really lacks content. I might have taken some inspiration for future pieces from some generated art, but it's always very vague and the more you try to get a proper "concept" out of it the more you'll end up drawing it from scratch!
Which is personally fine, considering I do concept art for me and others! :D

What I was thinking was, you have this post apoc world, with all this terrain which represents that kind of scenario. And then you have all these very cool, sophisticated and advanced mechs, tanks and stuff. The rule book art seems to show a futuristic world. So perhaps, some really stark advanced terrain or drop ships or something, could give you a bit of a transition, such that everything blends in together. Shanty town over here (representing the masses), while over here is a highly advanced grouping of something or another of the folks who are fighting it out to rule the world.
Of course, it all depends on the fluff you use as the backdrop in the rule book.

Fast forward ....well, a lot. Got sidetracked heavily, the campaign stretchgoals got all completed, and now we're finally headed towards the next step - ANOTHER CAMPAIGN in late november! Those are awesome! Someday I would love to see a set of non-combat versions (alongside civilian vehicles). They would be great for adding details to scenes.

The more i look at the pics the more I discover.
Just a thought , have you thought of mortars or
Howitzers or simply sprung ( modern catapults )demolition charge throwers which would have an area of effect?
The infantry are very nice also.

Heh, that's why i don't like renders much. ...and i'm totally planning to print some in 15mm too! In fact i'd love to see people playing in that scale, sometimes!

Would be cool, but a bit complicated game-wise. I'm planning some heavy artillery but probably not meant for gaming and rather as objectives?
Anyways - more soon to come... it's a long work, but I hope it'll pay off eventually!

Some updates here. I revisited the pipelines i did last year, in the hopes of making them sturdier and easier to print.

then I started playing with different styles of chimneys. Creating a proper "props library" is very important for the composition, otherwise stuff will be added always too late.

Finally, I built some factory with these parts. It was definitely NOT just placing pieces together, and lots of experimentation is still undergoing, but i'm pretty happy with this first outcome.

Here a sample layout, with a bunch of pipes combined together. of course you can just print some endings and use those to make the refinery a standalone pieces.

I spent *ways* too many hours figuring out a decent colour scheme for the Union, I think this one fits the needs pretty well.

Thank you! The bases are *SUPER* lazy, just GW Agrellan Earth on a black background. But they do the job, and a bit of bits of colour here and there do help with the look as well.
