Title: Pulp Alley in (of all things) the Pulp Era (updates irregularly)
Post by: Sinewgrab on September 30, 2018, 02:17:23 AM
So, I recently swindled a few friends to get a campaign going for Pulp alley, and the decision was to actually play in the Pulp era, so I finally quit dragging my feet and got a few models painted that didn't quite fit in with my post-apoc setting (although I will usually freely mix that era in, as certain styles of clothing never really change).

I have no idea what this guy is, or where he is from, but I made him a pale-skinned vampire wanna-be.  He has some kind of contrivance on his left hand that I just painted a dark silver.

And we have Lincoln with an axe - a bit early for pulp, but maybe he extended his life by killing vampires...or something.

And a classic Red Skull.

We had our first meetup where everyone was there today, and it was freaking awesome.

Shocked by the choice of period setting! Shocked, I say!

Any photos of the game in progress, and the players?

Not really yet - we are going to start Perilous Island next month.  It looks like we will only be able to meet about once a month, but the first fully attended meeting yesterday went well.

We did a "Trail of Clues" - I GM'ed for the other 4 players.  I didn't keep track nearly well enough for an AAR.

Basically,  I told them to find the plot points (who were townsfolk) to get clues to find the soda machine.  Nice and simple.

Planning on it!  As I finish some more figures, and get in some more games, the results will show up here.

Gentlemen,
I have to admit, I have been remiss in posting images of a build I have been working on for a week or so.  I almost put it in workbench, because I am planning on building enough gribbly bits to use the current project for several genres - Pulp, WW2, VSF, Space Opera, and anything else I can come up with.

May I present, Crossover Miniatures' Scholz Zeppelin.

Fairly straightforward for the most part - there are a few misspellings in the directions, but that doesn't matter overmuch as long as they make sense.

I primed and painted the inside a gray color, to make it fade into background, and make whatever is on the deck become the focus of the eye, so that I would not have to spend weeks painting such a large space.  I used a hammered silver on the outside of the shell, to give it either a Zeppelin look, or a Spaceship look, or, in extreme cases, an Astronef look. :)  I also built and painted the entire shell before I even considered working on the flooring.

I then used a cherry wood stain on the flooring, and painted the walls a merry blue color - matches my VSF Norwegians, actually.  Wonder why?

And tonight I finished most of the work.  I still have to build the engine nacelles, but I am a bit tipsy between bourbon and paint fumes...and they are bloody complicated.

This thing is a beast, but a beautiful one.

On, and I got in a good little 3 way game today, with my wife and Marine0846.

Came down to the last turn, and we ended up in a 3 way tie, with 1 minor plot point each, and the necronomicon floating down the river after my wife's sidekick "couldn't hold on".  (I used a card to make her drop it.)

Is that the Book of the eight spells which must be said on certain occasions? Or am I missing something? It looks like a good starting game, and the figures look great...

It's my go-to name for any tome of occult standing I use as a plot point, along with Die Vermiis Mysteriis.

The zeppelin is finished - magnets, cabling, ladders, and nacelles.

I am going to make pieces that fit along the wall and in the cabin for control stations, etc, so that  I can switch from genre to genre by changing them out.

Should be a good game.

So, yesterday we played the inaugural game on my Crossover Miniatures Scholz Zeppelin, as well as our first foray into using the Horror deck (in the second game).

The Zeppelin game went really well using The Crossover scenario.  I was too tied in to remember all of the bits, but Marine 0486 took the win when his Gangster crew was revealed as the conspirators, and set the bomb down where none of us could get to it.   :?  It was after all, Turn 5, and we were all headed to the other end.

The competing leagues were my wife's duo based on Rick and Evie from The Mummy, Marine's Gangsters, our buddy Ron's German Jet Troopen, and my Church of Starry Wisdom.

It was really crowded in the control room to start.

[img]http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/36/1352-281018215229-3609886.jpeg)

The other nacelle was worse - I didn't get photos, but the perils there eliminated 4 different models - 2 followers, a gang, and an ally.

Dammit, who put that there!

One jet trooper actually got to the bomb, but promptly failed to pass the peril, and went out.  As usual, the first time I take something out that I just painted was blown up.

And then we went to Egypt for a get the gold without being eaten by Mummies game.  We had decided to ise nothing but Duos for this game - I had the Phantom and Devil, my wife her Rick and Evie, Ron had Stahlhelm and Golgo Satana, and Marine ran the game.

This one ended in a tie, as we knocked down Stahlhelm, who had seized the major plot point, but taken quite a beating in the process.

All in all, one hell of a Saturday.  Dave, love your game.

SO, we have been painting away here at the Hobbytat...mainly because I find it relaxing, and currently doing two jobs at work because my somehow 52 year old yet brattish schoolgirl of a coworker decided to walk out when she was told she couldn't just blame her inability to learn her job on me after a year on the job has me stressed beyond all belief...and we are playing Pulp Alley on a regular basis.

And one of the things I am doing is getting figures together for Perilous Island, because that is the next step now that the group knows it likes to play with each other.  I have my Lady Elaine Darrow, but I needed U'Bun'Yu, her loyal maid.  I went with this figure.

And here she is with Lady Elaine...both as heroine and captive.

So, some time back, I did a little project to make a Pulp Alley league based a little song ( http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=76863.msg940370#msg940370 ) and I have lately returned to it, as it really made my little black heart go pitter patter.

So this fellow here...

...has been busy making a few monkey creations to add to his menagerie.

And then I got started on choice pieces to use as, well, perilous areas, or plot points, or just color.

Traps...

And jars of Paganga Goo for the upcoming Perilous Island campaign...

A little box...

A power plant, or something.  I added an LED light to a bacta tank, and gave it a new paint job.

A small pillar, and then some good/evil pillars.  No idea where any of these came from, just found them in the stash.

A gong, for those Oriental adventures...

A couple of odd plot points - one's from a Call of Cthulhu figure, and the other I think is actually a DC heroclix called the Brain or somesuch.

And I have zero clue where this came from - but it is resin and very neat, so I made it a mini gazing mirror, or stargate, or whatever.  It's on a 25mm base.

Group shot!!!

Been really cruising along in the painting lately. Feels good.

Great looking project.

Thank you.

So, here comes another update!

My wife, bless her heart, changed her mind at the last minute, and instead of having me build a league based on Sky Captain and Polly, wanted her favorite mystery show, Miss Fisher's Mysteries as a league.  So, like any dutiful husband, I did it...even if I had already gotten 4 different models for Polly, two different Sky Captains, and, well, stuff... o_o

Here we have Dot, Miss Fisher, and her ward Jane.

Accompanied by her cohorts and romantic entanglement, in order, Bert, Jack, and Cec.

I also went looking through some of my old figures, and started rebasing some of them, to use as villains and foils for the upcoming campaign.  This is Yogo Junzo, from the Clan Wars minatures game.  I have considered using him as one of the bad guys in Tomb of the Serpent, along with 10 ancient GW Mummies I also rebased...

I also added another crazy model to my League of Skullcrusher Mountain, Egg Foo ( a Heroclix figure - and I think that was his name. Seriously.)

And a Dreamblade (or Horrorclix) figure of a Dr. Chimpanzee...

Some undead dogs - D&D models, I think.  They'll make good random undead for Pulp games.

And a bunch of plot points - strange devices, ancient artifacts, large gemstones (or Perilium, your choice), lost pages (or whole logbooks, who can tell anymore),

And even though this is more 40K than Pulp, I am posting it here, because I love to use it anywhere.  And I will likely resurrect my Cult for Pulp Alley at some point.

And this is why I should not be allowed near eBay when buzzed and complaining that I don't have any Pulp vehicles...

And this is why certain threads ( http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=58045.0 ) are dangerous to peruse.  While Fram is right - it is a little big - I think it works fine.  I am planning on throwing some paint on the windows and detailing it a bit, maybe even a full workover.

All in all, a good couple weeks work.

Your Phryne Fisher & friends look great, along with the other bits & things. Glad you found her Hispano Suiza. I think that Lockheed Vega looks great. After all, a 28mm figure could hardly stand upright inside that fuselage. And you're right about the windows needing paint.

Well,  I had the crew over today, so we had a five-way go at Hidalgo Fire, and started the Perilous Island Campaign.

The setup -

Unfortuantely for everyone else - I placed my leader, Dr. Leermeister of Skullcrusher Mountain, 6 1/2" from Lady Elaine.  Someone shot at him, and the nearest cover when he dodged (I'll take 5d10 for dodge almost every time) was closer, so when they finally let me have a turn, I went straight to the plot point, and seized it, using my Gadget X and Utility belt to avoid needing to roll dice.

I then spent the next 6 turns running away from the other 4 leagues, who immediately ganged up on me.  By turn 3, the leader was the only figure I had left.

Will do.  I was wracking my brain trying to decide what to do when I remembered I have this huge f*$#off zeppelin I just built, that deserves to be brought out as often as humanly possible.  That has its own special scenario, thus ending any need for effort on my part other than figures.

Played in a couple of games over the last few weeks - just been lazy about posting.

Marine0846 ran steampunk inspired take on goat demon worshiping ladies...

And I ran one out of the Lemuria campaign, but reworded it to fit in a Pulp era.

For this, I am using my Skullcrusher Mountain league, my wife had her Miss Fisher league, and Marine0846 had his Adventurers.

I have a small group going up here, about 6 people total, that are playing the Perilous Island campaign, so that was the easiest way I could think of for everyone to play a scenario designed for just two people.  We are doing the same thing for the warehouse next month.  I have the space, and, obviously, plenty of terrain.

I tend to think of bamboo and jungle as side by side - even if they really aren't.  I think it comes from the fact that my first impressions of the "jungle" were from The Phantom comics when I was wee, and so I don't differentiate.

Also, China Station from Pulp Alley.

To be honest, I have had all of this stuff for over a year (or longer, in the case of these walls), so it is just getting moved to the front of the queue for random reasons.

There will always be Clan War - I have a fully painted Crane army I drag out once in a while for Dragon Rampant, or just for single figures.  Rebased a couple for my wife's new league -she kept trying to play her Miss Fisher League like the characters, but since she isn't writing the script, it wasn't working.

This is her new league - which she is basing on multiple Wuxia and Anime sources.

We gave the entire league the Flying perk to represent the constant ninja leaping from such films.

Very cool! A couple things for 2nd Edition --

Stealth: In Second Edition, going into hiding is now an action (not a full action) for all characters, so we did away with the Stealthy ability. You may want to use the Shadowy ability instead.

Shadowy: You gain a +1 bonus to all opposed spotting checks.

It may be worth noting that this bonus applies to whichever side of the Spotting roll you happen to be on.  ;)

Another option is to give Josei the Savvy ability for an extra die of Finesse. Finesse is very important for stealthy characters. Or give her Agile for another point of Dodge and forget the stealth thing altogether. At low levels, being stealthy can be fairly difficult unless to really commit to your Finesse.

Also we added a new ability called Two-Fisted. It is exactly the same as Animal, just a different name for people that didn't like to use "Animal" for humans. Of course Animal is still in there as well.   :D

So, I fell behind on getting photo's posted - back in the beginning of April I went to a local 1-day convention, and hosted a game with my Zeppelin.

All I remember now, is the dirty rotten team from some unnamed country in Eastern Europe tried to blow it up, and a good Brit stopped it.

This game also featured a new option I added, and some 'rule of cool' rulings on my part.

Astute observers will see a line running down the center of the zeppelin - this is my "zipline".  After two separate games where ervyone was at one end, and the bomber just places the bomb at the other end with no chance of ANYONE getting there before it blows up, I added the cargo cable.  If you want to use it, it is a peril, if you succeed you can ride the line for as far as you want, and that is your action for that turn.  If you fail, you fall off Xd6 along the line.

There was also a moment where a player with short burst wanted to fire through the ceiling of the cabins below the catwalk, and I allowed it. Don't tell me a wooden ceiling getting blasted by a submachine gun would cause a peril below it.

And we did a campaign game this weekend.  5 players, Lagoon of Terror, as we start playing our way through Act 2 of Perilous Island.

It was hard fought, but my dear Dr. Leermeister managed to pull off the win, by once again sacrificing almost every single other member of the league to win.

The beginnings were okay.  People were maneuvering in the first round.

I started by having my assistant Scarface give Shawn's ally Brock a good swift shooting to the face.  Next trun , he used the utility belt and other gadget to gain the lost pages.

This looked like a cluster feldercarb looking to happen.

My leader had grabbed the mysterious remains, and was about to get mobbed.  The area cleared out unexpectedly when my wife had to retire her league due to low blood sugar (she's a brittle diabetic), but that just meant the other 3 went to town on each other, while I ran away.

While 2 of the other gangs were fighting over the native fisherman.

Of course the roll was a 4 as soon as possible.

My ally in a diving helmet held off the Terror for 3 whole freaking turns, but was eaten in turn 5.

Was a fun game.

These are going to be my leagues for a run at Arctic Rescue I am running post-zeppelin at Enfilade this year, along with a couple of others.

Well, it has been over a month, but I was tied up with stuff, and things...

I have, however, finished up a some jungle pieces...

Needed more for my Perilous Island campaign, and I think I could probably make about 10 more pieces before I run out of materials.  I think I overbought.

And then today and yesterday were taken up with this beauty - though she still needs the detailing done.  She's built and primed now, though.

In progress photos:

And MOSTLY done...

She is, as many of you would recognize, the Sally 4th Tramp Steamer lasercut MDO kit.

She is gorgeous, and everything thing fit beautifully together, was cut well...

BUT

The supplied directions are, in my opinion, close to useless, especially at the end part, where they give no photos, assume you know what pieces they mean, and do not actually tell you where they go, so you have to expand their far too small internet photos like you're looking for Waldo to see where something might go.
If I did not have years of experience with these kinds of things, I likely would have put it into a box and sold it on to someone else out of frustration.

That said, it is still a very well put together kit, and I am looking forward to putting it on the table.  I cheated a bit with this kit - I experimented with something I saw on a railroad model website to make the cardstock more durable.  I gave it a good coat of this:

I coated the entire model with it as per the instructions.  It soaks in, and seems to have hardened the material enough that I was able to lightly sand it to get rid of imperfections.  Also, it only took ONE coat of primer to cover, instead of thirstily drinking an entire can.

I also left off most of the doors, as I didn't like them, and I am planning on making some from plasticard myself, painting them separately and gluing them on.

Thanks, Dave!

I polished her up bit tonight (by dirting her up...odd, that) and I think she will do for terrain and a point of interest.  Anything else can be extras I place on her, and not glued down.

Behold, the Cleveland!

Last weekend we had a bit of gaming going on here -  two tables set up for Blood Sacrifice and Sinister Swamp.  I ended up playing the Blood Sacrifice twice, and one of the other gentlemen ended up in the swamp twice, but games were still fun.  I have given up on trying to do AARs, as I can't GM 2-3 games, play, and still keep track of what is going on as well as take photos.

As you can see, I used the Rancor for the Great Gonga, and then my Big Robot Ally, wasn't so much.

And I also did a bit of work this week, getting some scatter terrain together that will work in towns, for WW2, Colonial, Pulp, Post-Apoc, whatever...

Nothing special, but it all adds flavor to the table, as well as cover.

Very cool! Did you use clear acrylic for those bases as well?

I did.  I find that they are easier to multipurpose that way.

I run the router/engraver at the signs shop I work for, and these all come from remnants from other sign projects.  And since I am also the Center Coordinator (i.e. manager) no one tells me not to use them.

If I ever move on, I won't know what to do for bases.

I have some, and have had good luck with them, but these were actually a purchase from a gentleman who felt they "had too many bubbles or imperfections" for his tastes, so he was selling sandwich bags of them for reasonable prices at Enfilade.
