Title: Chivalrous Rumpus Extraordinaire (UD 23/10 game photos)
Post by: Silent Invader on October 01, 2018, 07:20:46 PM
The ‘official’ thread for my game at BLAM18 in just under 3 weeks time.

Set in the mid-13th Century, a Chivalrous Rumpus Extraordinaire is an unusual affair. The Baron Radin is of advancing years but bereft of offspring. His lands extend beyond the horizon, his coffers are bulging and his only opportunity to secure an heir that will treat his legacy with the necessary respect is through the marriage of his Saxon ward, the beautiful Maid Marilyn. The Baron loves a Tourney and, being quite the warrior in his youth, wants nothing less than a lion for his adopted daughter, whom he adores. So his heralds have ridden far and wide, issuing an open invitation to Knights to do battle for her favour.

The Tourney will be bloody, with no quarter to be expected, as the Baron expects absolute commitment from whomever will inherit his estate.

The Tourney will be fought at an abandoned monastery, a cursed place, with the Baron and his ward watching from the adjacent village. One of Maid Marilyn’s finest scarfs will be placed somewhere within the monastery, and the Knight who returns it to her will have her hand, should she so want it.

The game

Rules will be a variant of FFOL: Horse & Musket. The variances will be put up as soon as I’ve decided them.

Players will be a maximum of 6 (if desired, I will run more than one game).

Each player will command a Knight with his retinue (a team). The Knight must survive the game - if the Knight is killed the whole team must immediately withdraw (if they have the scarf, it must be left where it is).

A standard team will comprise 4 x 28mm minis, all on foot, all in a common livery:
1) A Knight (usually with a closed helm) in mail and tabard with or without shield
2) A serjeant (usually with an open helm) in mail and tabard with or without shield
3) A spearman &/or swordsman with or without shield in helmet and  gambeson
4) An archer with bow or crossbow (no shields) either armoured in helmet and gambeson or unarmored

Some options are available:
A) One of the two Knight and serjeant can have a pole (two-handed) weapon OR other second weapon (excludes daggers, which every mini is assumed to have); a mini with a pole weapon cannot carry a shield
B) Can have a mounted Knight (with a matching dismounted alternate) but a serjeant is not then permitted (team size =3 on the field)
C) The archer can be replaced with a second spearman or swordsman
D) A spearman or swordsman can be replaced with a second archer (but there can never be more than two archers)
E) The serjeant can be swapped for two replacement minis of any mix of spearmen or swordsmen (team size = 5 on the field)

EDIT 2/10: some clarifications added, including changing the incorrect use of man-at-arms to serjeant

Players are welcome to bring their own teams but they must conform to the above and be painted and based. You are very welcome to post your teams in this thread but it is not compulsory. However, if you are intending to bring a team I urge you to flag it with me so that a) I know you’ll likely be a player and b) I can flag early on if there’s any problem with its conformity. Ta!

Any problems with the above, just ask by PM if you want to keep it secret or otherwise in this thread.

I will bring a selection of teams (I’ve just started painting them .....); FYI my minis are the Later Crusaders by Crusader Miniatures.

So, to the field of battle:

NB: minis need to have their bases repainted

Thanks chaps.

I’ve added OSHIRO modelterrain and Elk101 to Zee List  8)

Cheers Martin, much appreciated  :D

That is going to be a hell of a game!

Your Nordic flair will be missed!  :D

Btw, I’ve added some clarification to the team wordage. Also, I realised that I have been typing man-at-arms when I mean serjeant. It’s a correction of title rather than change of mini or function: think of the serjeant being a rough sort, the Knight’s right-hand man, most useful on the battlefield to watch his back or carry out a mission, but somewhat lacking in class and manners to join the noble folk at the banquet table.

Count me in, if:

A) The figures turn up.
B) I actually paint them.
C) I don't change my mind and revert back to doing this in 40mm again.

 ;) lol

PS the set up looks grand. :)

Thanks folks  :D

I’ve added Malamute and Dr De’ath to Zee List.

If making your own Retinue etc, please bear in mind that spears and bows etc in gambesons but with chainmail sleeves and chainmail socks will still count as lightly armoured, so don’t stress about getting anything but the Knight and the Serjeant into mail.  :)

Sir Renaud de Brassey & retinue are ready for the fray...
Come on down if you think you’re hard enough...

(Which almost guarantees they will get wiped out straight away...  lol)

I am torn betwen having a mounted knight or two foot knights. Not sure what the advantages are for a mounted figure in the game (apart from the obvious longer move).  Any ides of the pro's and con's.

Fighting and moving on horseback have, as you say, their obvious advantages. The table is up so you can see the lie of the land. The scarf will be within the monastery, some parts of which will be inaccessible to horse. And once dismounted there will be no remounting.

Ignore what I wrote in the BLAM thread, it’s a knight and a serjeant (though the latter can look like a poor knight). Knights will obviously have more fighting power etc than serjeants, and serjeants more than spears. If you swap the serjeant for the horse and dismount early, then you could be at a major disadvantage if your solitary knight, clutching the scarf, runs into a knight aided by his trusty serjeant.

As an aside, some - not you, of course, Gary!  :D - might be tempted to sit astride their horse and await the scarf to appear in the open. That will likely be a poor tactic, as the Maid Marilyn will unlikely take the hand of a knight who has not committed to the fray by leading from the front. After all, the Baron wants his heir to be a lion!

Some long promised images of example teams ....

Four minis from left to right:

Knight (closed helm), Serjeant (distinguished in this case by open helm) and a mix of spearman and/or archer. One of the Knight or Serjeant can have a pole weapon and the archers can be either crossbow or longbow. The spearman can instead be a swordsman. Spear/swordsmen and archers can be either lightly armoured (gambeson - any Mail won’t count) or unarmoured and archers can’t have shields.

EDIT: I’ve just noticed that in some of the images I’ve used a spearman with the wrong shield pattern (12/8)

In the top image the Serjeant is swapped out for two extra spear/sword men. Archers aren’t compulsory (as per images above) but in any event can’t exceed two.

In the bottom three images the Serjeant is swapped out so that the Knight can be mounted. Once dismounted (using the knight’s foot alternate) the Knight cannot remount.

Note that I’ve amended the post and the attachment for the Mods as I made a mistake ..... apols

Basically, a crossbow takes 2 actions to reload. A long bow takes 1 action unless it breaks a string etc (rolling an unmodified 1) in which case it becomes 3 actions.

A couple more Retinues scratched from my Yellow & Blue army. Varnish still needs about another 12 hours, which might account for the shine.

I don’t think I’ll get any longbows painted in time so my ‘pool’ of Retinues can’t have them.

I’m also still struggling with names  ::)

24 hours
Second coat

Is the regime I work to. If I go less than 24 it always seems to be a bit glassy

I have cheated a bit on the Heraldy. In Denmark we were really late movers on the whole heraldry business. So this is a simplified version of the Rosenkrantz heraldry as it looked when one of them meet Shakespeare and got immortalized in one of his plays.

Thanks. They are from Fireforge, the Knight is one of their foot Templars with a cavalry great helm and the others from their foot Sergeants.  I was tempted with a mounted knight - I even undercoated him but when I read you scenario I decided against him.  I'll paint him to match later.

In due course the retinue will form part of my Outremer force for a future (long way off) project.

The Official Announcement ......

Later today or possibly tomorrow I shall put up the final rules mods, which will include use of jokers and which parts of the terrain are Difficult. I’ll also do playsheets for the teams that have been declared and post up images of the six - Yes, SIX! - retinues that I have painted in the last couple of weeks.

Thanks for sharing the mods.
In the document could be great if you add the organization of each warband, although your were repeating from the post.

A hugely entertaining game. I only got a few photos too, this was my crossbow man / gardener who spent most of the game skulking in the bushes. Our game was won in fine style by Dr De'Ath (even if I did try and stab him in the back right at the end).

Great pictures Steve and Nick.  :-* Unfortunately I don’t have any of any merit.  ::)

Thanks to all the players who really did enter into the spirit of the occasion. I’m not entirely how I’m going to do AARs of the two games ......  :D

I have posted a link to my pictures in the "Well that’s another one over...." thread. Feel free to grab them. They mostly document the struggles of Sir Rosenkrantz up til the point where he caught a glimpse of the maid, thought better of it and headed for home.

FFoS = Fist Full of Sword or Steel? What did Jaye think of the amendments?
Title: Re: Chivalrous Rumpus Extraordinaire (UD 23/10 game photos)
Post by: Silent Invader on October 23, 2018, 09:14:11 AM
I call it Fistful of Steel but only when talking to myself as it’s unofficial.  ;)

I’ve no idea what Jaye thought* of the mods though feedback from some others is that they’d have been happy to play the standard game. I did recall some of the core rules incorrectly but at least I was consistent  in doing so.  :D

(*he might have said but running 5 hours of gaming between 5 hours of driving left me befuddled - though it was a pleasure to meet him.)

I made the mods because H&M isn’t a game of Knightly prowess (obvs). I wanted the Knights to last (some people have fed back that they liked that Knights couldn’t be killed outright but others had the opposite opinion) as with a straight kill some people could have been out in 20 minutes (as if Knight dies, game over). As it was, the first 6 player game lasted 2.5 hours with all making I think at least 90 minutes. I think the general reaction would be that the mods (aside from perhaps early death avoidance) were fairly irrelevant to the enjoyment of the game, which was really more a function of the scenario, minis, terrain and player interaction, and of course the core of the rules which was the FFOL:H&M engine.

I’m looking at the mods again over the next week or so and some I’ll likely  keep and some I’ll likely revise or discard.

 :)

Whatever you decide to do with the rules I will be first in the queue to play again. ;) :)

You have single handedly revived my interests in pseudo medieval romps to the point I am planning a Tourney for a mini BLAM in January.

Best get painting those mounted versions of the knights ready for the joust... ;D

The single wound maximum for Knights worked well for the game, I thought. It was brilliant fun.

I’m glad you enjoyed it Steve  :D

It was a lot of fun to host. Putting aside the acceptability or otherwise of my mods, the FFOL engine is IMHO the best I’ve ever hosted or played. I generally and genuinely dislike wargame rules but not FFOL, which I wish I had found sooner.  8)

I loved it. Thought the mods worked great. Take a loo at the newer style of close combat in Galactic heroes, you might like it over H&M. I much prefer armor as walking cover(which is how I do it) vs an armor save roll. Watching Richard squirm was an added delight. Here's a few pics, mostly dealing with my own Sir Arnulf of Cockswaddle in action. I'll have more BLAM pics on my blog shortly.
