Title: Nova Aetas - painting the whole thing to a tight deadline
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on October 02, 2018, 11:52:17 PM
Right, and now to something completely different.!

NOVA AETUS! One of those Kickstarter boardgames. Few days ago a good human being approached me, and said "Sir, I really like this boardgame and I want to play the campaign NOW. Please paint all the minis for me until our next session." (something along those lines) Of course I can not turn away a fellow child of the sun and the moon, despite my busy schedule. Now I'm sitting here with my roughly 50 new best friends, all of them cast in that wobbly plastic. At least not quite as wobbly as much other stuff. And they all demand to be painted by the 19th of October.

The game's set in 16th century Fantasy Italy, with Fantasy Vatican threatening Fantasy Venice. And then there's Fauns as well. Basically it's the usual cooperative dungeon crawler fare, without a dungeon. Instead it's a series of pretty interesting scenarios, a few side quests, and so on. I was told a few things about the game mechanics, and it all sounds pretty nice. Less exhausting than Gloomhaven, more complex than Descent. Not bad.

The figures look OK as well. No high fantasy stuff, which is something I like. The Fauns are pretty neat actually. Warriors, musicians with flutes (don't ask me why they didn't get any pan pipes) and centaurs with bows. So I thought I'd start with this faction right away. Here's a test figure for the Faun warriors:

Casting's OK as well. Sure, mold lines are a problem and pretty pronounced, given the material. It's the wobbly China plastic. Not good, but it seems like this is what board games companies go with these days. The sculpts themselves are nicely designed, level of detail is OK. Not really crisp, but could be worse.

The execeptional thing about these is the size.

These guys are gigantic. The chap in the left and the Faun are from the boardgame, i also put a GW Ork and a regular 28mm Perrys figure next to them for size comparison. Golly. These are way beyond the absurd size of 32mm some want to establish as a thing. These figures are 38mm, foot to eye level. Weird.

So yeah, let's see. I'll start with the Fauns and go on from there. Wish me luck.

@OSHIROmodels: Cheers. Things are looking a bit bleak though. :D

Fauns done. Rushing on to the Venetians (8 soldiers, 5 crossbowmen, the doge and two more characters). First I have to figure out a colour scheme.

I wrote up an estimated schedule based on how painting the Fauns went. I'll never get this done until the 19th.

What happened to good old "hide in a whole until the deadline has passed"? :P

Painted up some test minis for the Venetian faction, so I can get feedback about the colour scheme from the customer:

Once the scheme's green-lit I'll paiont the rest of 'em.

Looking great! Like your choice of colours.

To put it lightly, you are out of your mind! That is a lot of minis to complete.
On the other hand, I've seen your Orks from the Future Wars threads, and I'd have never believed you could get those done so fast.
I look forward to seeing what you can do with a crushing deadline. I'm sure it will be great. So far, these figures look outstanding!

@Tungdil: Thanks very much! Choosing a colour scheme was a bit of a headache, but being on a tight schedule helps with that. :D

@Michka: Thank you, Sir. Yeah, the deadline is certainly a stress factor, but maybe I'm being overly dramatic about it. The wording was "get as much done as possible by the 19th of October so my group can have a nice game". He also gave me a little note saying which models should be done if possible for the next scenario, but it's mostly stuff like "6 out of the 8 of figure

Thanks for the positive comments. Even after all these years these help tremendously with keeping up the motivation to keep going. I know it sounds odd and fake and whatnot (especially nowadays, as so many people seem to be in constant sales mode on the internet and be overly positive and "enthusiastic" about things), but it does help.

Anyway, here's an overview (Done, Work in Progress, To Do):

Fauns:
.) 8 Warriors
.) 2 Musicians
.) 5 Centaurs

Venice:
.) 8 Stratiota
.) 5 Crossbowmen
.) The Doge
.) Condottiere
.) The Gypsy

Vatican:
.) 8 Swiss Guard
.) 5 Papal Guard
.) The Pope
.) Cardinal

Characters:

.) Knight
.) Scum
.) Apprentice
.) Novice

Monsters:
.) Dragon
.) Manticore

So yeah, there's still a bit left to do..

Anyway, I also brought pictures!

The venetian soldiers are done now.

So yeah, those are done. Currently I'm doing characters (as you can see in the overview above). It's funny how the two human factions each bring their big boss to the table in the shape of the Doge and the Pope respectively. They also got nice figures each, especially the Pope. Looking forward to painting this one. On top of that, each of these factions also have some smaller-time characters. The Condottiere and the Gypsy lady for Venice and the Cardinal for the Vatican. I'll start with the Doge, the Condottiere, the Knight and the ...Scum for now. Hope to get most of them done by tomorrow. Hope you like the pictures!

@Gargobot: Thanks very much, Sir!

Heyhey, here's an update with the first handful of characters:

Respect to you for not only taking on a daunting project with a pressing deadline, but doubly so for getting stuff done at tremendous speed and at an amazing level as well! 8)

And considering your output so far, you're going to make it too. You're approximately halfway through your allotted time, but have already finished nearly 2/3 of the lot.

So keep it up; we here at the LAF will be cheering you on all the way... :D

Title: Re: Nova Aetas - painting the whole thing to a tight deadline
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on October 09, 2018, 03:43:15 PM
@Michka: Thanks very much! :) Yeah, I thought I get the old terrain out for some extra nice shots. It also was the customer's birthday and I thought I'd present him with some extra nice update shots. (being ever the slimy, slithery compliance-machine that I am. :D ). To be honest I also just like having the stuff out on the table. Makes me happy when I walk by.

@Andym: Oh, thank you. I was seriously worried about them looking a bit ruddy, considering the material, how hard removing the mold lines was, the size, and the time constraint. So positive feedback on the painting is very soothing to me, especially on this project.

@Bloggard: Many thanks, Sir! So far the results have been met with thumbs up. :)

@Daeothar: Thank you. It's good being cheered, isn't it. :D Yeah, the panic phase is over I'd say; showcased by the facts that at this point I'm being pretty sure that I'm the best in the world at what I do (until the next tiny little crisis shatters my fragile artiste ego. Not that I'm an artist, it's just my ego that thinks I was) and the fact that I'm starting to slack immediately. Nah, it's okay. I'm pretty positive I can finish those minis in time, considering this is half-time.

Well, here's the rest of the characters for now - the Apprentice and the Gypsy:

Hope you like them!

And now for the updated to do list:

Fauns:
.) 8 Warriors
.) 2 Musicians
.) 5 Centaurs

Venice:
.) 8 Stratiota
.) 5 Crossbowmen
.) The Doge
.) Condottiere
.) The Gypsy

Vatican:
.) 8 Swiss Guard
.) 5 Papal Guard
.) The Pope
.) Cardinal

Characters:

.) Knight
.) Scum
.) Apprentice
.) Novice

Monsters:
.) Dragon
.) Manticore

The lines are pretty clearly drawn now. I guess it's time to work out a colour scheme for the Vatican dudes, starting with the Swiss Guard and the Papal Guard, then I guess I'll paint the pope and the cardinal, and then it's monster time!

@Bloggard: Thanks muchly! Yeah, the characters of course are a looker. And I gotta say that especially on the gypsy lady and the wizard lady I took a little extra time as I wasn't panicking as much any more about getting it done in time. And to be honest the figures are designed in a very agreeable way. They "paint up well" (as one of the most mysterious of mini painting expressions go). Those two were also a good excuse to get some colours apart from brown, bleached wool and red in there. I actually worked off of the same blue-green base coat on the two figures. Oh, and I really love painting ginger hair. And that turquoise. What a lovely mini, that sorceress. Of course details on these casts aren't terribly sharp, which actually helps with this  thing that I love about 28mm faces (or larger) - I never quite know what they'll look like in the end. I mean I got my set approach, but things always go a tiny bit different, so it's never before the last highlights and the lips that I know what the face will EXACTLY look like. But at some point the mini starts having a soul and a unique facial expression. Good stuff, good stuff. Shame these minis are so huge and don't go with any collection...

Heyhey, here's the Vatican test minis on which I cobbled together a colour scheme:

I'll see if the colour scheme is OK that way, and if so I'll go on from there.

It's a mix of panic and a systematic reduction of every single other aspect in life to a minimum over the timespan of decades.   ;D

Something like that. A recipe based on a test mini helps of course. I also cut corners. :P

Well, here's an update:

Again, I like those designs. :)

The Manticore's more or less done at this point. Working on it gave me flashbacks to when I painted one of the best monster figures out there, the Chimera by Mierce Miniatures. Painted that one in early 2011 and to this day it's one of the models I have the best memories of. Lovely sculpt. If you want to do yourself a favour, buy this figure. And then give it to me to paint it for you. ;)

Well; you did it! 8)

And ahead of schedule and with very nice results too; many kudos to you, good sir.

Your client should be elated to get a set painted tot his standard, especially at such short notice.

The dragon and manticore are very nice models too btw, although to me (as I don't know the game), they appear to be slightly overkill. Here you have your game of squabling factions; a couple of swordsmen and halberdiers slug it out. they're fighting, and they're fighting, aaaand there's a dragon! (internet cookies for those who get that reference  ;D )

Awesome work though. Now what's next? :D

@Daeothar: Thanks very much! Yup, it worked out in the end. I have the slight suspicion that the whole thing started out as a "dark medieval fantasy Vatican vs. Venice" affair. Then they made it a Kickstarter, and added a fantasy element in the Fauns (which I like). And I'm very sure that the Manticore and Dragon are basically stretch goals/ expansions. They're made of proper resin too rather than PVC and so on. I like the designs though, as I said before Proper, simple dragon. Actually, with the long neck and small head it looks like one of King Gidorah's heads I think. :D And I like Manticores in general. As for what's next - I started working on some more of these fantasy/medieval-to-20th-century houses so I can make some nicer scenic photos of minis.

@Bloggard: Cheers! Much appreciated.

Right, I got a little cold. Good thing it's right after I'm done with these figures.

absolutely fiipping wonderful.

I'm sure it's on your site, but what do you do for varnishing?
Title: Re: Nova Aetas - painting the whole thing to a tight deadline
Post by: Battle Brush Sigur on October 18, 2018, 01:33:54 AM
@Bloggard: Once more, many thanks! :) It's pretty simple. I do the gloss-first-then-matte thing. For gloss varnish I usually use some from a local craft store. HOWEVER, on these here I used gloss varnish from a rattlecan I got from a car store earlier this year when I did some gamepad-customizing. Worked just as well. Then I applied a thin layer of Vallejo matte varnish mixed with some matte medium fired through the old airbrush.

Right, final pictures before I send them back home. At last minute I had the idea of "why not add some static grass?", because it seems like I can't do with a stressful ending to the whole project. So I did that and varnishing and took a whole lot of photos.

hmmm, it would take me a couple of weeks (at best) just to do the static grass and varnishing I think!
thanks for the info.

look fantastic 'in situ'.

@Bloggard: Well, i'm really, really sloppy, if that helps. :D ;) I'm not huge on varnishing in general though. My own minis I don't varnish much; plastics I won't varnish in general, resin neither, metals... not all the time either.

@Andym: Oh, thanks very much. :) I handed them over yesterday, the meeting of the deadline was met with benevolence, and tonight the figures will see action in their first games I heard. So fingers crossed. Hope I hear how that goes.

Right, that's done now. I really enjoyed setting up the shots with the scenery, so I painted two more buildings for my late-medieval-to-20th-century/fantasy town collection:

A small half-timbered house and a heavily fortified house, all from the Thomarillion-designed/NOCH-made range of hard foam buildings. I really have a soft spot for this stuff. Possibly because I was basically raised on these:

Especially the town houses were great. So basically I'm redoing my collection from *coughcoughcough* years ago. :p Anyway, I guess that scenery stuff warrants a separate thread...

'ello. I thought it would be a somewhat justified act of necromancy as right now I got more Nova Aetas figures on the desk.

They're from the NA expansion Vesuvio's Forge:

Just a WIP of course; it's these three plus three evil cultist dudes and a scholarly looking character with a handgun.

Glad you did as I missed this thread the first time through.  Wonderful work on the entire collection!

@syrinx0: Thanks. :) Yar, it was quite a rush back then.

Greetings, friends.

Here's the Nova Aetas figures finished! Big figures, those. 32mm. Well, the dudes in the back are even larger of course.

Hope y'all like'em. Also: Have a great weekend. What are we all up to? I'm going to clean the flat! Wahey! Also trying to learn the ropes on that incredibly disheartening video game called Squad.
