Title: Fantasy worlds of AWu
Post by: AWu on October 03, 2018, 09:11:58 PM
I  making this thread as accompanying to my AWumunda in Future wars.
I rarely paint fantasy miniatures but It happens from time  to time and I will dump here all thing fantasy I do.
Ive never been interested in painting fantacy armies but small bands and characters for skirmish gaming are always tempting so most of them will be the projesct of such type (and some LOTR stuff I am starting to be enamored with)

First post will be Orktobery :)
My happy Orky bunch for Shadespire

(If anyone is interested with their backs they are on my blog :) http://waristheh-word.blogspot.com/2018/10/orktober.html )

Then Some Skellies - My first band finished for shadespire
(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zza84Y9o_l8/W7UfCs7sDYI/AAAAAAAAGoE/RFHVOBnstr4K5k8zCSZaxPwAKokrhOBXQCKgBGAs/s1600/aa1.jpg)

And finally to be in Orktobertheme
First models Ive painted for Middle Earth - Orks ive bought cheaply some years ago :)

Lovely unpainted chap will be their leader in Battle companies styled gaming and their Captain in larger games but I am yet to play anything LOTRy

What next ? Some more Lotr stuff or Khorne warband for Shadespire.. Not sure yet.

Thanks! My paintjob on them is surprisingly evocative but I guess when you really like the model they are easier to paint :P

Great painting all around, especially on the LoTR Orcs (probably because I am partial to the models  :D).

Couldnt agree more. Those are great models. Especially knowing how tinny and how old they are. Ive never considered orcs as LOTR force until I got those 8 really cheap. Originally I wanted to get missing sculpts only to field full battlecompany and try this game but I will get new starter box and most probably box of 24 of those fine gentlemen as finding the ones I miss only make hem expensive in comparison :P

Small update on the Orktober Orks. Ive decided they are to monochromatic (I should change their skin color to better match black which would be difficult so I decided to just add some red to make green more fitting.

And in their own post. Swarm of Skritch Spiteclaw. My favorite band of Shadespire (Underworlds) miniatures, which coincidentally I have most fun playing AND winn more often than loose.

Some fun was had recently :)

Ive got Middle Earth Dwarves from GW to built Battle company with them.
And I started to work on models from  Middle Earth new starter box

Starting Dwarf Battle Company.
I am not particularly fond of dwarves but this BC was single box to built, not to numerous and easy to paint (and quite fun)
I will add to the shields when I will come up with something worth adding.

Thanks. Those are very cool miniatures that are surprisingly paint-friendly.

Much more fun to paint than AoS stuff not to mention traditional Warhammer or abysmal stuff i fail to have fun painting at all like Warmachine..

Middle Earth SBG is surprising gem I have bad impression after seeing only simple goblins around 2001

Interesting you enjoyed painting the LoTR stuff as I always thought it was a bit meh compared to the 1990s cool metal Warhammer stuff.

But you’ve done a fantastic job on everything here. And you’re prolific.  Really liked the skaven and undead for Shadespire. I need to get round to painting mine!

I haven't seen any till this year to be honest. And without fond memories I wasn't very impressed by those old models.

And I like aesthetics of most of the models in GW line.
When I seen them foirst time - Ive seen only plastic goblins and last alliance.  I haven't had much pleasure panting them.

Then I stumbled on James Wappel blog and his stunning Easterlings and Elves I tried to paint some old Last alliance Elves and had a lot of fun. They are not Wappel level but his technique helped me to getting use to them. And I started to slowly buying second hand stuff I could acquire cheaply.
And painted some Mordor Orks

Then new edition went off with great starter set and now I own it and Dwarves box I bought to give half to my friend in hopes of catching his intrest in trying the game (and kept second half for myself as they are really smal and simple battle company to built).
Surprisingly to me dwarves were really fun to paint. Perfect amount of detail and space for some shading.
And I am known  dwarf septic :P

Troll was really fun too.
So far I have less fun painting Morannon orcs. Models are cool but they have too much armor for my taste. But with coloring I still have fun painting. And this is most important to me.

Continuation of LOTR theme Ruins of Osgilath. Great little set of quite large and non specific ruins. I bought them because they are very useful in any Fantasy and Sci Fi setting (I have set of 3 and I plan to convert 2 statues to Grimdark sf :>

And now for something completely different.

We were organizing joint terrain building session localy at my friends house, I was going to teach one reluctant-to-paint-anything friend how to do easy flesh but he chickened out so I was here with no plans to build anything and few hours to spare.. and I decided I will build something random.

And thats how Die Schwarze Katze (named after famous Warsaw illegal building that looks like vomit with slight elements of fairy fantasy) Inn/Brothel with WHFB styling and complete lack of planning build as you go venture was born.

[imghttps://scontent-waw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51541554_10156981364533236_2935136051145998336_o.jpg?_nc_cat=107&_nc_ht=scontent-waw1-1.xx&oh=4cd9fa10ed1ed8c82597b1ad32086c7c&oe=5CE4F91F]http://[/img]
After gluing L shaped frame I decided I want to have large oriel ?.

(https://scontent-waw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51149941_10156981365623236_1971284787935051776_o.jpg?_nc_cat=110&_nc_ht=scontent-waw1-1.xx&oh=919ab3ae7d83b1a65d4b1421dbf5c1b5&oe=5CB5FA62)

 longer..
(https://scontent-waw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51121434_10156981365133236_2208528494919417856_o.jpg?_nc_cat=102&_nc_ht=scontent-waw1-1.xx&oh=bf8c14a59f9b58eaaa6a30c6ce20b00f&oe=5CB6AA4B)

Then I want to try the windows technique
(https://scontent-waw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51482010_10156983600973236_5500719612766978048_o.jpg?_nc_cat=102&_nc_ht=scontent-waw1-1.xx&oh=48148907b5101086239f44d5732abcaf&oe=5CF6B688)

Then I wanted to test how roof tiles will look like (I impulse buyed tile cutter latelly  o_o ), and then some surfacing...
(https://scontent-waw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51327454_10156984655768236_2041044729088442368_o.jpg?_nc_cat=100&_nc_ht=scontent-waw1-1.xx&oh=721d4846e5dd478a4417358492d92836&oe=5CECDFAF)

And then decided it would be cool to finish superstructure before making finishing detailing
Die Schwarze Katze so far  lol

(https://scontent-waw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/51373677_10156986469208236_5211370427699429376_o.jpg?_nc_cat=111&_nc_ht=scontent-waw1-1.xx&oh=27425fbfe5956f30b3c149cae90cd483&oe=5CF7FE3D)

I do lot of mu modelling project with some elements of randomness and whimsical in it (I like the work itself and have tonne of things unfinished)
But this time I plan to finish the building and start paint it at the second planned terrain building session in some near unspecified future..

To be continued

(I still want to add small round tower at the top somewhere - just havent found right spot.. )

There's a very realistic feel to this build as you go approach.

A lot of older houses (pre 1930 around here) have lots of add ons that clearly werent invisioned or planned by the original builders. The further you go back in time, the more prolific I imagine this would be.

Yeah.. but the used life size materials :)

I do not recommend it to model builds in 28..
Some parts are sub optimal in the survivability aspect.
The Bright side is if it will crash it will crash down like real life building with overbuild superstructure :P

but I am optimistic!

South wall almost ready

Update. The Inn is finished just need some depth on the stone masonry and brown on the base.
Some photos soon.
I am painting some Rohirim, Beastman and some more bands for Underworlds for a LPL I hope is incoming so I am skimpy with updates lately :)
But those guys are to few to make LPL sized entry.

I present you:
The Mollogs Mob (I will retouch few things but they are finished).

Maybe thats why he painted really fast  lol
and most important I was having real fun painting this ugly bastard o_o

PS: Always I remember to clean up base rim when I am looking at my photos...

Title: Re: Fantasy worlds of AWu

It started live as very random set of walls during terrain building meet up to build middle eastern village and strangely grow so by curse of lacking proper planned superstructure its completely unsuitable for interiors  lol

And this is quite good as I will finish it despite loosing steam. I would never finish interior at this state :)

Played him only twice vs Khorne Garruk dudes and he was insanely good. Rest of the team is fodder for the enemy to score glory quite easily (Mushroom and Squidgeon managed to kill Arnulf-two wounds Khorne weakling, once each but this was not part of the strategy really).

He is very good but single minded :)
Strangely he is not often at high position at larger tournaments - this mean that Stormsires (top dog) and some of the rest have good strategies to deal with him or its easier for the less offensive teams than Khorne dudes- they are fun but seriously lack options (first game he tried to kill the Mollog and failed and was wiped out in turn 2, second game I played badly and he killed off my critters and in the endgame it was who roll better Mollog attack or Garruk Def).

Mollog was surprisingly fun to play (and I normal prefer complicated combination plays like Skaven and Skellies)
It was simple joy of smashing things and going after running victims lol
I recommend him, will play more, not gimmicky at all, could be said to simplistic but you have to plan well as loosing Mollog in first two turns means you probably lost a game  :>

I like Underworlds as a game a lot.
But even more i love how cool small strange painting project each warband  create..
(Would I paint Silly Troll with tinea problems that grow and live or SIgmarines - soon to come.. or treeelves really.. I dont think so)

This time a battle report
I was tempted to try Burrows and badgers and it was a blast.

So I've been recently tempted by beautiful miniatures and great tournament report by Lovejoy (who is in fact game author ) to try Burrows and Badgers - a game of anthropomorphic animals.
I was a bit skeptic at first but pretty and well painted miniature ca lure me to many traps  (and I liked Mouseguard :)
Before I order any miniatures I've decided to try the game with proxies.
So I raised a small Skaven Warband that served me well in Underoworlds + one added mice  works great in B&B assuming that Skritch (who is The greatest Yess Yess remember?) will be larger kind of rat.  I  added one mice with a bow to fill the roster (random skaven from Mordheim I've bought pre painted  many years ago and never bothered to do anything with him - Fun fact Skritch will be my Assassin adept in Mordheim too so that small dude after rebasing and repainting/rebuild will find a way to Mordhaim again)
So we have Team Rat consisting of Leader Brown Rat with Halberd (pole arm) heavy armor and Feint skill, Black (smaller kind) rat with halberd, pair of rats with double hand weapons, rat with weapon and shield and one mouse with a bow.
At the other side of the table Team Prox mustered..
Mollog is a Massive Badger with Two handed sword and Zweihander skill (Tough and powerful killing machine) and the bad case of tinea, His sidekick is Otterbestman (larger beast the size of my Leader brown rat) with twohander and heavy armor, pair of GoblinMice have only bows and bat is armed with hand weapon, band is complemented by this rabid Shrew (those teeth counts as two handed weapons. two hand weapons

The Scenario was Recover the Paychest (I have older version of rules so the name could change in the Osprey book - I will buy it for sure as i gathered watching the youtube revievs   ;) that the rules improved). Both team had to dig for hidden chest with treasure of some unit destroyed in the previous war hidden somewhere along the  huts on the center line..
The game started slowly but my shieldrat could feel cold glimpse of inevitable since turn 1!
Every model rushed forward, the sneaky bat managed to search rightmost hut but to no avail (that happened to by only attempt made during the game as things escalated quickly)
Combat was started by Otter and shieldrat, but they were mainly inefficient (due to armor and shield).  It is quite nice interaction of shields - which give bonus to defense roll so its easier to awoid the damage and heavy armor -which grants tough 2 skill ( that means each time character takes damage it is lowered by 2 points).
Then the BadgerTroll joined the fray and BUM, one swing of that giant double handed club and the shieldrat was smashed into the cobblestones..

Combat itself is also  very elegant.
Its opposed roll of Strike die ( D10+2 for the Badger) vs  Block skill (D4 on my rat +2 bonus from a shield)   Most definitely not a fair combat..
What could save the rat was a Miracle - when you rol natural maximum on any dice test the test get +7 luck bonus.. That gives larger chance for a bonus to smaller animals with lover types of dice - cool heroic narrative can be made here.
But my rat rolled 1 on his D4 so the end test result was 1 (+2 for a shield but -1 for multi model combat as  he was in base to base with Otterbeastman  and then -1 for wound penalty as he was lightly wounded by the Otter earlier).
The furry (well fungy) monster rolled 9+2 for zweihander 1 to 11 = 10 points of damage and then + 3 for his uncanny strength...  That was 13 damage..
Each critter have 16 damages with 4th, 8th, 12th and 15th point taken result in penalty to every roll made after suffering them.. Rat  had 4 damage from Otter charge so he went down with one strike of the Badger..(was squished like that Frog Mollog model is carrying.. :(
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6dVw8uO1nXc/XTjWyvOK3bI/AAAAAAAAG4g/TbY7NBhvQkUvGx8Zp3l3sW3Y8PCXH22UgCKgBGAs/s1600/03.jpg)
The rest of my team was furious about poor critter demise and prepared next turn charges!
Then some arrows were exchanged and my humble bow mouse put an arrow into the Badger wounding him lightly..
- Game uses alternate activation method so I was shooting BadgerTroll after he killed my shieldrat.
Then Goblinmice hit my bowmouse with some light hits in response.
Then my leader and his henchmen charged into the fray but failed to do serious damage to the Otter.
The turn ended with the bat failing in searching the building and mu last rat catching him off guard and wounding.

Next turn my leader managed to put halberd inside the dent of Otters heavy armor and put him down but just after my two smaller rats wounded him lightly each but not before himself being wounded by stubborn Otter.. The giant Badger swung his mace but my rat rolled 4 so he scored +7 luck bonus and dodged the mighty blow. Then shrew charged but failed to wound my Halberd rat. Bat ineffectually fought the Ratty and in response was slightly hit again accumulating more than 8 damage and putting him on -2 disadvantage to any tests.
But Unfortunately Badger won the initiative and swing again at my leader.. and again it was 1 for me..
To 10 - bastard got Lucky bonus so final test was 1 to 19.. 18 +2 damage OUCH!
Skritch has fallen, and then was stomped into the dirt..
rest of the combats were non decisive but the bat got one more wound and some arrows hit the target.
Then things went further south. Dual wielding rat run forward to kill finish one of the BowMice/Goblins (and avoid the Badger) but managed only to wound him.
Halberd rat miraculously survived two Troll attacks with rolling 4 and getting +7 but finally meet his demise. Fortunately my band morale was strong and I did not run away then because..
Then Mollog team made a mistake. Instead of atacking bat run away to search another terrain for a paychest (and don't be slaughtered - what could inevitably happen this turn) provoking disengagement strike. It was risky buy not that risky.. 50/50 chance and he was hit and hit to death..
Unintentionally the bat move freed my dual wielding rat to activate and charge seriously wounded bow-mouse-goblin.. He did and he scored the second kill that round and the final kill of the game.. Now the Prox team too was at 50% down and needed to test for morale.
It had the advantage.
Morale is a roll off too.
Suffering team leader fortitude (d8 for Otter) vs the team forcing the roll leader Presence.. (as my leader was down my second  highest presence was only d6).
So the rats had to test D10 ( Badger presence) vs d6 ( rat fortitude) and prevailed..
But Badger-troll D8 was a failure against Rats d6 presence..

My guess is that after two kills straight in a row, just few seconds apart
.. my murdery rat had to strike fear even in badgers.
Flurry of  whiskers and knives was just to much.. and Team prox fled the battle field leaving the Paychest to the Team Rat.. Yaay!

I liked the rules very much. There was some numbers but they were quite easy to chew. Simple additions and subtractions. Game flown very well and was quite exciting. Will play again for sure. And I want to try the campaign. ANd I have to try playing with fate points.

And I most definitely will order my two bands of the actual animals (rats are kinda ok but the Prox team was a disgrace) firs thing after returning from vacations..

Story if from my blog but I pasted it fully apart obscure joke gif :)

Hopefully next one will be with actual Oathsworn Animals as Ive ordered bunch for two bands

But now for something completely different.

Treasure tokens in 1 hour work

Made from Rendra cobblestone bases (this is real time saver here) and some random bits and part of the Kinder Surprize toy (I wasn't sure what was the source of the palantir bit but my friend recognized it :)

I need to make bases ad put base colors on at least 3 thugs/thieves)
