Title: [Commercial] Oak & Iron 1/600 Scale Naval Battles 1650-1750 - Two More Videos!
Post by: El Frantico on October 03, 2018, 11:42:25 PM
Firelock Games is excited to announce our next Kickstarter coming November 7th, Oak & Iron!

http://www.oakandirongame.com

Oak & Iron is a 1/600th scale naval game set in the age of piracy, imperial expansion, and above all, fighting sail. It allows players to recreate battles between small fleets and squadrons of armed sailing ships. The game is designed to be simple and intuitive while also challenging players by providing significant tactical depth, being true to the theme and tactics of the period, and supplying significant flavor for the various factions represented in the game.

If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer them. Thanks for checking it out!

Looks really good, simple enough to pick up quickly and just about enough of the ship handling to keep a flavour of sailing ship combat. Are you planning more detailed ship handling through advanced rules or is what you demonstrate on the video all there is?

I like the card play concept and the special dice and wake/broadside markers work well. The ship models look OK but need much more detail (I assume they will be hard plastic).
I dislike the tiny tokens on the ship models and the way the ships kept being bumped while changing them. Fatigue and damage should be tracked on the ship cards not the models.

How are you planning to retail the game beyond the Kickstarter starter set, individual ships and cards or only sets? Are you including special characters/captains in the game?

Good feedback/questions Rob!

More detailed ship handling rules will be available. The ship models in the videos are VERY rough 3d printed prototypes. You can see better examples on the website. The tiny tokens are optional, some people like having everything visually represented on the table. Everything can be tracked on the card though.

Everything in the Kickstarter will be available to retail after the Kickstarter is delivered. Outside of that, its to early to say for sure what will be available in retail. I'd really like to offer individual ships if possible, so that's likely to happen but I can't tell you yes with certainty. What I can say for certain, is that we have long term plans to support the game. Oh, and yes, special characters will definitely be available to command your ships/fleets.

Individual boxes of a ship with its card would be a great way to allow players to expand their fleets.

I agree 100%, and certainly plan on doing that, but I'm hesitant to promise anything before getting through the Kickstarter. :)

Have you decided the final contents of the starter set yet?
How many ships and which ones?  Will extra ship models be available in the Kickstarter?

Bases look better and game seems less clumsy without the tiny tokens, changing that was a good option I think.

Hi,

First of all:
I love the rules! They are on spot for me. Very well done. The video on Mini War Gaming was excellent to get them to know.
The Design of the equipment and the ship bases... Awesome.
Don't know if the ships were final one. For the big size there could have been more details, especially if looking at the sails. But maybe it's a design choice to keep it simple an the price lower.

Can't wait to get more information on the Kickstarter page. Curious about the price tag.

Wish you a good success. Seems (also looking at Blood & Plunder) you know what you do and doing it with passion. And the niche(historical & pirates and now naval action) is kind of small I think in our beloved small hobby. But you brave people did/doing it anyway. Respect. Keep it going.

Greetings from Berlin Germany,
Jan

The last video is really interesting. It shows very nice mini and good rules (fun, realistic and not too complicated: a really good mix)
So I would probably participate... if the price is correct  ;)

Maybe the rules are frozen but if it s not I think some modification could be discuss:
- Template could have an arrow on both sides. They would be easier to use this way I think
- To speed up the game a little only one reroll should be allowed for every roll.
- It’s not a real advantage to move first in many cases. Maybe the moves should be solved in speed order (first ship with no movement this turn, then ship with a speed of 1…)

As is said, the ships (1/600) are little bit simple in comparison to 1/1200, but certainly robust and for casual players like me good enough and its affordable.
Starter Box little bit low on Dice, but good price.
EU friendly. Nice. I am in.

As is said. Love the rules. Always wanted play naval battles, but there wasn't a thing like Oak & Iron. Good choice there at Firelock Games. Congrats. Kickstarter goal reached already!

Any chances to get a "how to" of the Gaming table? Seems not easy to build though.

Cheers.

Great start to the campaign, but pretty much everyone on the comments reckons there are not enough ships in the starter, or at least that more than 1 of each of the smaller types is required.
I would have thought sets of Brigs and Sloops would be more in keeping with the theme than introducing 1st and 2nd Rate Ships of the Line.

Uffff, the comments section realy makes me feel a little bit sorry for the guys at firelock games if i read some of the questions there. But it's the third kickstarter, so they knew what they would be "engaged" with. ^^
It seems, that some guys dont even watch the battlereport and of course don't get an Impression of the game and ask unnecessery questions. But okey.

Can somewhat understand the guys who want more ships generally (though they never played the game by themselves *sigh*), but if you watch the batrep you can see, that you can play good and long enough games out of the box. So i don't understand guys saying there are not enough ships in it. It is more than other starter sets offer (in other games). It is a starter box and the price tag is good. No need to double the miniatures (some guys even want a playmat in it; WTF?!) and therefore the price. And no need to dump out many stretch goals. I would have been pleased to just preorder the core box as it is.

They even work on the demands as add ons, what is realy nice of them.

Well done Firelock Games.

It is a Kickstarter, there are always a vocal minority demanding more.......anyone launching a project must be aware of that.
In this case I don't think the problem is the number of ships, for the price the starter is great value.  Rather that Firelock have built their position on the back of Pirate gaming and miniatures and have been pushing this game to that audience.
Which makes it a strange decision  to include an add on for 1st Rate Ships of the Line which have no place in a Pirate game, but not the Sloop or Brig which were the main types actually used by the "Pirates".

I hope they will include the smaller ships as add ons.

True.

They wrote, they are working on it. And pirates can't sail every ship of the selection Mike said in the batrep. Seems they considered this.

It looks great but do you need individual ship cards for each ship and can the ship cards be acquired separately later on. I ask for the people who have a collection of ships but want your awesome rules.

I've backed the KS. The ships look a bit simple, but those are renders. The painted samples are good enough and I believe that once rigging and flags are added they will look great. I agree that being able to pledge the ships separately as add-ons would be nice.

I actually prefer these ships to any of those that have grossly out of scale reefing points moulded onto the sails. I've never understood why this very small detail was seized open decades ago by those creating 1/1200 Napoleonic ships and then exploded out of of all proportion. I say bravo for leaving them off. The models look so much better for it.

1/600 is the perfect size for the smaller ships that are of most interest to me. I'll keep the SOL action for the Napoleonic period. I like the idaa of offering relatively simple models that can be painted by those who want more special looking models but that are good enough to use as they are.

The clear bases are million times better than the ARES Sails of Glory ones. Although ideally I'd like them a bit thinner but appreciate that in time I'd have to go to Litko for them!

I echo the call for sloops, brigs and galleys. It would be great if they offered models of known pirate ships – the Osprey book shows a few of them. And off course I'd have to paint up a Black Pearl.

From the last update it seems as if they have accepted the need for more small ships and the 6 starter ships are available in 2 sets of 3 as add ons. Good move by Firelock.

Now if they would change the decision to skimp on dice and actually include enough in the starter for all the available ships........ :-[

Thanks for all the feedback guys! For the record, I was trying to get the rest of the team to have those smaller ships as add-ons from the beginning but no one listened to me!  lol

I realize the "pirate" thing is the selling point for a lot of people and the cool thing about that to me is that it will attract a lot of people into historical naval gaming without realizing they are learning about the history of sailing warfare :)

I'm feverishly trying to get more prototypes made and painted up so I can film a fleet game with multiple squadrons. It adds a whole new tactical level to the game and is really fun to play multiplayer!

The ability for the game system to handle squadron level skirmishes and full fleet battles is one of the things I'm really enjoying about the game so far. I'm excited to show that part of it off.

Cool. Would like to see it.

With this scale for maneuvers you need a big table it seems. But in naval thats not a huge problem. (blue tablecloth)

As it happens, I have a small collection of 1:600 scratch built Napoleonic ships made of balsa, card and wire (2 x 1st rates, 4 x 3rd rates and a couple of frigates), so this KS is most welcome as I could use those big ships with the smaller ones being produced by Firelock games.

Scale is abstracted. 3-5 ships per side is playable on a 3'x3' table. You will need at least a 6'x3' to play fleet actions though.

Man, i want to play it now!  ;D

Please note that the event cards where missing in this excellent playthrough. Every round one card is drawn. Things that could happen are for example wind direction change; messing up initiative cards; etc.

Sidenote:
The ship bases will not be acrylic ones. They will be made out of plastic.

Sadly for the people with excisting ship miniatures they will not provide the rules and stuff without the models. Maybe in the future.

Jan

My understanding from comments and the demo videos is that instead of docking the damage chits on the card you can track damage etc on a simple roster, so 1 card per ship class would be enough in the basic game.

I believe there will be special characters and unique ship configurations that will require specific cards (or at least a more comprehensive style of roster) later though.

It's ideal to have a card for each ship, but not required. Noting upgrades and damage for each ship can be done on piece of paper instead. We have no problem with people playing with their own ships, we just don't currently have the logistical flexibility to offer in the kickstarter at present. Very likely that we will have something after the Kickstarter though.

Congratulations, guys. Great success.

Can’t wait for the game to rise and see the progress.

Hopefully i will recruit some sailors here (in Berlin, Germany) with some games in clubs/stores, but i don’t worry, cause it’s a good game to get people in the hobby, or even just play a game with boardgamers.
