Katō Kiyomasa and Bodyguard
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l63G0r09-QM/W7pzdk-U37I/AAAAAAAAMBY/Z5tSiJVhEq4T2mGafuv8ecBZw3ziVV4sACLcBGAs/s1600/thumbnail%2B%25287%2529.jpg)
Katō Kiyomasa was a military man first and last, outlawing even the recitation of poetry, putting the martial arts above all else. His precepts show the single-mindedness and Spartan attitudes of the man, they demonstrate emphatically that the warrior's first duty in the early 17th century was simply to 'grasp the sword and die'. Contemporary accounts of Katō describe him as awe-inspiring, yet not unfriendly, and a natural leader of men.

Kiyomasa was a renowned castle-builder. During the Imjin war he built several strategic Japanese-style castles in the territories he conquered. Ulsan castle was one of such fortresses and the site of Kiyomasa's most famous battle — the Siege of Ulsan on December 22, 1597. Kiyomasa led the defense of the castle, successfully holding at bay Chinese general Yang Hao's army, which numbered 60,000. He defended the castle until November 23, 1598. However, his bravery was not reported to Hideyoshi by his rival and superior Ishida Mitsunari. Hideyoshi recalled him to Kyōto. After Hideyoshi's death, Kiyomasa clashed with Mitsunari, and started approaching Tokugawa Ieyasu.

During the Battle of Sekigahara, Kiyomasa remained in Kyūshū. Believing that the Toyotomi would fall without the help of the Tokugawa (and the hatred he had of Ishida Mitsunari commanding the Toyotomi forces), he sided with the eastern army of Tokugawa Ieyasu. For his loyalty to the Tokugawa, Kiyomasa was rewarded with the former territories of his rival Konishi (who had sided with Ishida), which when added to his existing territory, increased the Kumamoto domain to around 530,000 koku.
This unit is made up from range of manufacturers, including Westwind, Perry and Steel Fist Miniatures.

Nice work! Your table looks very nice too. Can you tell us how WestWind's Samurai stack up to the Perrys' and Steel Fist's?

Perfect match IMHO
I will post some side by side pics if you like?

That would be of great interest to me also, just starting out on my Samurai adventures and have purchased only Perry so far, I already had a few Warrior Miniatures ones as well which are a decent match, so be interested to see the others. :)

Torii Mototada (1539–1600) was a feudal lord in the service of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Mototada served in all of Ieyasu's major campaigns. With only 2,000 men he mounted a rearguard action against the Hōjō clan's force of over 10,000, and defeated them; soon after, Ieyasu granted him Tanimura Castle in Kai Province. Later, in 1585, he joined Ōkubo Tadayo and Hiraiwa Chikayoshi in laying siege to the Sanada clan's Ueda Castle.

Some wonderful figures there. :) Also good to see figures ready for a battle rather than a skirmish.
You know Kiyomasa's black and white standard with the red writing on it, don't you? Looks good (bastard though the man was).
-
Super thread, what inspiration!! Super set up and beautiful painting. :)

thanks guys!!
big battles are definetely where my interest sits
Gareth

:o :o :o Superb!!! Wonderful Board and great painting on your minis.... I will follow this thread with great interesting!! ;)

This looks brilliant, thanks for sparking my interest in Samurai
-
Cheers guys, I have loads of units already painted, with plans to add a reasonable sized ikko ikki force in the next few months.
-
May I ask what size the table is?
-
The samurai layout is on a 8ft by 5ft set-up, however, the table can accommodate a 14ft by 5ft layout.
It was 6ft wide, however, my short arse mates struggled to reach across the table ;)

Absolutely beautiful.
Which ruleset are you using?
Also - do you have any Footsore Minitures figures - if so, how do they fit with other manufacturers and what are the sculpts/detail like in the flesh?
Many thanks
Nick :)

I am currently using War and Conquest, but I fancy giving this rule-set a bash: Battles in the Age of War from Peter Pig
No footsore Samurai as yet, but they will definitely be added at some stage.
-
Grand - thanks.
I am familiar with PP rules - I think these give fantastic period feel (although some have suggested Samurai are under powered). I also really like the game set up but have only played in 15mm. Would look great in 28mm. And they include siege rules!
Does W&C provide the same flavour?
Cheers
Nick
-
Does W&C provide the same flavour?
It's bit generic, but Mr Broom keeps on teasing us with the possibility of a Divine Wind supplement, in the meantime, Rob is updating the samurai army list to enhance the feel of the period.

Great set up, nice to see a large 28mm battle, so many skirmish games these days.

We have a big Samurai game planned for May, so I will post a battle report with lots of pics.

Lovely project.
What is it about War & Conquest that appeals to you versus other rulesets?
-
What is it about War & Conquest that appeals to you versus other rulesets?
Its a quick and easy set of rules, so newcomers can pick up the mechanics without problem. It doesn't matter how you base your miniatures, the rules will work even if both sides are based differently.
Rob Broom has recently up-dated the Samurai army lists and keeps on hinting at a dedicated supplement (I keep waiting Broom).
War and Conquest is a fabulous set of rules, so it was just a shame it hit the market at the same time as many other rules that were attempting to fill the void of WAB.
Gareth
-
Thanks for your views.
I bought a copy a long time back but got distracted by other rules and WAB 1.5. I'll give it another look, I recall it was an attempt to evolve WAB.

Yamamoto Kansuke (1501-1561) was a Japanese samurai of the Sengoku period. He was known as one of the "Twenty-Four Generals of Takeda Shingen". Also known by his formal name, Haruyuki. He was a brilliant strategist, and is particularly known for his plan which led to victory in the fourth battle of Kawanakajima against Uesugi Kenshin. However, Kansuke never lived to see his plan succeed; thinking it to have failed, he charged headlong into the enemy ranks, dying in battle.

This is a really great thread that I for some reason hadn't caught before. I'm glad to see another fan of War & Conquest. Just before the COVID hit my friend and I played our first game of it using our Wars of the Roses forces and we decided we really liked it. Sadly, we've been unable to play it since! With your multi-based figures, do you still use the number of figures on the base to denote the number of troops in the unit, or do you "assign" a certain number of wounds to the base relative to what's on the army list you've made? Hope that question makes sense.
Your scenery is especially excellent, by the way - I love the garden. I also really love those West Wind figures, but aren't they in a much earlier style of armour? I'm not expert on that but I'd heard the West Wind range was for an earlier period. I like the historical info you've provided with your various commanders, too!

Oda Nobunaga was a Japanese daimyō and one of the leading figures of the Sengoku period. He is regarded as the first "Great Unifier" of Japan. Nobunaga was head of the powerful Oda clan, and launched a war against other daimyō to unify Japan in the 1560s.
