Hi all, I have posted a couple of updates on here with regard to my Elizabethan Ireland project. It occured to me however that I might be better havign just one thread to tie the project together a bit like others have done on here so goign to give it a go. I am part way through already so if you want to catch up on some of the previous stuff check my blog here and look at the those posts marked Elizabethan. https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2018/06/elizabethan-irish.html
All that said you may have to bear with my photography its not as good as some others I have seen on here. Anyway, just pickd up one each of the Perrys Irish and the first couple are painted so they may as well be the first images I share. I do like the Gallowglass. The will be on their way to the basing department in due course.

They look rather tasty :-*
I'm assuming they match the Claymore stuff for height and heft ?
-
They do yes, they are also not far off in terms of style. I will do a comparison shot later Romark. I also have some other makes, heres the last lot I sent to the basing department last week. These are Claymore and Crusader mainly.

Here you go Romark. The two based are Claymoe, unbased are Perry's.

I like those a lot, especially the understated saffrons. :-* :-*
I am familiar with the Claymore figures but not the Crusader ones. I shall have to check them out.
Looking forward to following this with interest, not least since I need to add to my WotR Irish for the battle of Morimers Cross.
-
Thanks Hu Rhu, will have some Kern in Saffron up bery shortly and will do a proper photo shoot (kind of) when the based figures all get back from the basing department in a week or two.
Might also do a post on the blog at that point as should have at least a couple of dozen figures per side to share.
-
Thanks for posting, they look fine together :)
Collection growing nicely :)
-
Next painted for the Irish, 4 Perry's Kern. I have used slightly darker colours for the Safron as most of the rest are quite a bit lighter and I ant some variation. Not the best photography sorry.

Once I have all the painted figures back from the basing department I will do a blog post with a load more pictures and narrative.
I also got 15 Elizabethan Pike today, all foundry the chunky swashbucklers range, they will fit really well with the graven images pike. I have to apologise to the bloke I bought them from for a conjunction f technical incompetance. Not only was I changing banks so the payment took longer than it should, I am also having difficulties with ebay so I cant leave feedback or contact sellers, I couldnt even apologise to him.
I will add these to the blog as well.
-
Inspiring figures & painting. Have you decided what rule system are going to use for this project? I have long-term intentions myself to wargame the Nine Years War 1594-1603 (though prob in 15mm) and your project is good encouragement .
-
More lovely additions :-*
-
I am thinking of using Pikemans lament, although I also have Sharply buffed in my back pocket. I think these company sized games are a better fit for most of the fighting through the period.
-
A few more of the Perry's Irish Kern. I have to admit to being really pleased with how these figures are coming out. The Perry's have made a cracking job of them. English comign shortly.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4882/31840150348_374b8c3b5b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/QvB6ps)kern 2 (https://flic.kr/p/QvB6ps) by Roger Castle (https://www.flickr.com/photos/152172226@N06/), on Flickr
-
Very nice work on these, and good to see how the various ranges mix. There's something about the aesthetics of this period that just makes them really rather appealing, and your nicely muted colours fit them well.
-
I appreciate that thank you.
-
More lovely additions :-*
Looks like the basing department will have their work cut out for them lol
-
Those look very nice and the Perry’s Irish in particular look like good figures.
-
Cheers Levied Troop, yeah the Perrys stuff is lovely, enjoying painting them.
-
Wonderful stuff. Looking forward to seeing how they continue to shape up. Should consider placing an Elizabethan-looking officer/gentleman type or two among them - as gentry who have adopted Continental dress, or as Spanish advisors.
-
I have quite a few Elizabethan Gentlemen and one of them does look particularly Spanish so that might work cheers.
-
A few English finished this time. Three are the Graven Images Garrison Troops and one from the Wargaes Foundry Swashbucklers range. The Foundry figures from this range are quite chunky so fit in well. I am doing most of them with unifrom jackets so three are to finish off my first unit and the last one in blue is the start of a new set. Not sure about the blue.

-
Very Fine indeed. I see from your flickr page that you also have a couple of demilancers finished. Again, very fine indeed.
-
The pike look great, the Foundry miniature fits in fine too :)
-
Do you plan on skirmish gaming with them ? And if so, using what rule set ?
-
I have a few more figures to share with you including the Demi Lancer, sneak preview below but more on the blog.
https://gapagnw.blogspot.com/2018/11/elizabethan-ireland-update.html
At the moment I am planning on Pikemans lament but may also try Sharply Buffed the Sharp Practice variant for this period.
The Demi Lancer is one of the Hoka Hey Elizabethans rather than the Graven Images they also carry.

Enjoyed the write up on your blog :)
Mini looks great :)
-
Cheers, if you have seen the blog then you have seen this guy too, if not here he is. This is the Demi lancer with a head swap and using a Perry;s WOTR horse. I really like how he has come out.

Yes,the Perry's horse works well :)
-
The demilances are a treat.
-
These are the last of the Kern off to the basing department, hopefully some based u units to share shortly.

Great to see an up date.
Your figures look great.
I was lucky to play in an Irish vs English game at a Con. last year.
Pikeman's Lament were the rules used.
They worked well, had a fun time
-
Thats good to know Marine0846, I have had one game of Lion Rampant using Bronze Age figures so I get the rules mechanisms and I have the rules so can see the the changes, lookign forward to having enough for a game.
-
And the last of the Gallowglass that have gone to the basing department, although I have just received a call to confess that the figures are in York but all te basing material still hear in West Yorkshire, Doh!
Next I want to look at some conversion work I am doign to try produce some Irish horse I am happy with.

My latest issue has been the Irish Horse. I have struggled to find anything that looks right. The nearest are the redoubt Enterprises figures which do have the advantage of beign specifically designed for the period. The horse seem OK with the cushioned saddle and the riders are noce enough until you get to the heads. I ahve painted a couple but am sorely tempted to try head swaps and see what the end result is. This is the Irish Cheiftain from Redoubt. I really dont like the idea of butcherign a figure I have already painted but I just dont see that this is the same quality as the infantry I have painted so far. What do people think?
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4918/44885230815_cc9272cabb_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2bomxkV)IMG_20181109_163211 (https://flic.kr/p/2bomxkV) by Roger Castle (https://www.flickr.com/photos/152172226@N06/), on Flickr
-
Yeah that looks like tough one to work with. I have painted a few Redoubt figures and I would agree that their heads are the weak spot.
-
Here is my Cheiftain with a head swap. I like that its a more modern helmet too. Thoughts?
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4831/45833494901_19fc5948bf_h.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2cQ9DdH)IMG_20181111_111841 (https://flic.kr/p/2cQ9DdH) by Roger Castle (https://www.flickr.com/photos/152172226@N06/), on Flickr
-
Nicely done- a definite improvement.
-
Nice work on that conversion, definate improvement on the look of the mini :)
-
Cheers.
This is the original Irish Light Horseman with no changes at all painted and based. Again really not happy with the head, the helmet looks wrong and his moustache stretches from ear to ear instead of drooping around his mouth. I may be lookign to alter this chap too.

-
A change of head on that mini would be a great improvement if your other head swops are anything to go by :)
-
Hi,
Please could you tell me where you got the wicker shield?
-
The Wicker Sheild is cast onto this Irish Cavalry (also the Irish foot I think) I dont think they do them seperately but they are from Redoubt Enterprises so worth checkign the web site.
-
I had a meeting in York Yesterday so dropped a few more Kern in to the basing department. I like these with the colourfuljackets, in particular the guy with the long Claymore.

Cracking additions :-*

Thank you, some of my favourite so far.
So what do we think of the head swap on the Irish light Horse? I think its better rather than perfect but will do for now.

Working on a couple of demi-lancersnow here is the first one, again this is a head swap and with a Perry plastic horse.

Another good conversion :)
-
Cheers, the basing department came home for Sunday dinner today but again brought nothing finished back as she wants to bring the whole lot back done. Damn! Although dont have enough for agme yet I have units finished that I want to add to the blog! Ah well. Seeing her on Friday so hope to have a whole bunch back at once so a photography session on Saurday methinks.
-
That's something to look forward to,roll on the weekend :)
-
This is the fourth Demi-Lancer gone to the basing department. Now waiting for the last two to arrive from Redoubt Enterprizes. Not heard great things recently but lets see if and when they come.

Another beauty :-*
The decision to use Perry horses seems sound too! :)
-
So here are the first four Irish Horse based up. Two to come from Redoubt but may be a while yet before they arrive. Going to do a post on the blog shortly around tese and a bit of a photographic update of the Irish force as I have quite a few back from the basing department now.

I'm enjoying watching this project come together. Looking great.

-
I think your Irish Horse conversions are quite effective.
-
Cheers Metternich, goign to do a post each on the collection so far for Irish and English quite soon.
-
I am planning to ad some musketeers with a bit of minor conversion, either using metal matchlocks in open hands or plastic ons from warlord with the arms attached cut away and hands on the original figures replaced. Below is one of the figrues I have decide to convert from a bowman alon with the arms I will use.

I’ve used something similar and it worked well. Be interested to see TAG’s take on it.
-
Cheers levied troop, technology not my strong point.
Below is the first Irish shotte. I know they used more Calivers as they were lighter and better suited to skirmishing but still I like these.

Very nice :-*
-
Very effective painting and conversions. I like how you mixed in a couple of burgonets (one footman and one mounted) to fix them in time as being Elizabethan vice 15th century (or even 14th ! ).
-
So quick update of the nglish force so far on the blog, coming along nicely.

Mins look great, nice write up on the blog too :)
-
Your English forces are a treat. Nice to see how well the various manufacturers figures mix together.
-
I am a fan of mixing manufacturers were I can, hoping the TAG Dutch Militia figures mix in as well as they are lovely figures, three packs just having arrived.
-
An interesting and often neglected subject! :)
Nice stuff all around, I just have to mention that the mold lines on some of the horses (especially the gray) set off my OCD quite a bit o_o
Well, I shall have to live with it, as I must follow this project for a while ;)
-
I will have to see if I can remedy that. Its a little harder with the plastics as these are two part plastic castings that I have to join in the middle, my modellign skills still being hones. Bizarely the Grey is the only one thats metal!
-
RogerC, I have the Foundry Swashbucklers also, and am considering the TAG Dutch Sea Beggars and Militia. Please do let us know how well the two ranges compare.
-
Making a start on a couple so will share when the first are done and compare them for you.
-
Christmas Present to myself which I hope to have my Irish and Engliush fight over in the new year. Hudson and Allan Fortified Manor.

That looks great, nice write up on blog too :-*
-
Excellent painting.
I like the grass and other bits of color, you added.
I have a few buildings from Vatican.
They are a great value for the money.
-
Tidy work! And FAST, too! :o
That muted palette looks fabulous for this kind of scenery, and the use of various tufts makes it come alive.
Kudos from here, I cannot wait to see action pics centered around it!
If I hadn't got my 3D-printer this summer, thus minimizing the need for buying resin pieces for my tables, I think Hudson and Allen could have been one of my favourite manufacturers (they still have some stuff that I might have to get if I cannot find stls that cover the subjects - those Scottish Highland blackhouses are fantastic, and SO fitting for fantasy settings as well!).
-
That looks well lush and done so quickly as well.
-
Working on a couple of demi-lancersnow here is the first one, again this is a head swap and with a Perry plastic horse.

This one reminds me of Don Quixote, which by the way makes me think that no Elizabethan Ireland project would be complete without some Armada survivors for both sides (Irish and English) to annhilate lol
-
Thnaks very much all, I am tempted to add a unit of Spaniards to the Irish forces. I do also need more cattle for both sides to reive.
-
Making a start on my last two Demi Lancers and last two Irish Light Horse. Four figures from redoubt with mix of horses.
-
So my order with Redoubt turned up between Christmas and New year, amongst other things (Mainly Polish Pancerni) it will allo me to finish off the Irish Light Horse and the Demi-Lancers. This standard bearer is billed as a Reiter, his armour is a little early and Redoubt faces are not the best but on th whole I really like this one.
(https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7800/46634091192_d3098b32c9_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2e3TUB3)IMG_20190110_094226 (https://flic.kr/p/2e3TUB3) by Roger Castle (https://www.flickr.com/photos/152172226@N06/), on Flickr
The officer is also a Reiter and his face is not all that, but again his shiny armour makes up for that, kind of. Both horses are Perry. I will do a group shot of the unit when these are based.

Couple more English Shotte, left is the first of the Assault Group musketeers, billed as Dutch militia, and next to him another foundry Caliverman. TAG are a little slimmer and smaller but fit OK, givenn that the Graven Images figures are even chunkier and bigger than Foundry I may try not to mix these latter two together.

Thanks for the comparison shot (pun intended) of the TAG Dutch militiaman and the Foundry caliverman - pictures like these are invaluable in determining what ranges can complement each other. Am quite enjoying seeing your collection progress.
-
Lovely work, Roger. I have Elizabethan and (Anglo-)Irish armies for FoG:R in 15mm - too patchy/scruffy to post on this august forum - and I'm looking forward to some "team photos" when more of your units are finished.
-
Team photos, love it I might use that. To be honest I am just wanting a couple of units fiished so I can photograph them in the manor house.

Nice figures indeed. Looking forward to seeing all your figures on the table together.
-
Last three archers painted and on their way for basing. It only leaves me with 9 or so figures to paint for the Irish (although I have just ordered Antideluvian Miniatures Georgous set ofIrish with a set of Scots Ribaulds too to mix in) Shouldnt be too long before I can share a finished force.

More very nice Irish, Roger.
I saw those Antideluvian figures at the weekend. Wow. Those are the sort of figures that make a person start a new period. Trying to resist. o_o
-
These are just gorgeous, Roger. Got any game plans yet?
-
:-*
-
Thanks guys, I recon I am about 12 English away from enough for a trial game. Just need to decide if its Pikemans Lament or Sharply Buffed for the first one.
-
Your collection grows nicely, I like your conversions!
-
Thank you, the Antideluvian Miniatures arrived today, abosultely georgous. Even with them I only really have 7 more Irish to do and then maybe 15 or so English to have enough for my first game.
-
The Elizabethan Ireland project progresses, just a few more Irish and the bulk of the English pike to do, blog update with a quick write up

Great paint jobs. I must say those new figures are the most exciting toy soldiers I’ve seen for years, and I don’t even game this period ... yet 8)
They really do look like they stepped from the page. The Highlander/isle men bare legged, in gambeson are pretty amazing too.
-
I didnt plan to get any more Irish but I just had to have these, as you say they look like they stepped straight from the pages of history.

Cheers Romark, nearly there now.

Looking forward to see these in a battle report. I love the way you compare the different manufacturers next to each other. Cracking job
-
Those Antediluvian figures look good and you’ve certainly captured that picture’s feel. Looking forward to the battle :)
-
Cheers, hopefully get a game of this on table In September.

-
Are you using some of the old Graven Images figures along with Antidilluvean?
-
Great project.
Your Irish horse are very nicely done.
-
Very nicely done. They look really good. I will use them as inspiration for my 10mm version of this.
Regarding basing - I would go for magnetised, helps with storage and sabot bases / movement trays.
-
Cheers guys.
15s away I will be using Graven Images English but the Irish I am not quite so ken on so using Perrys and Antiddeluvian with some other makes mixed in.
