Just when my appartment finally had some free space, first time in years, I got this inspiration of making some miniatures terrain once again...
It's a project inspired by the works of the gentlemen BoBo and Nedius, with their respective Space Hulk projects. I use a similar style to create rooms and hallways, not aspiring to create a full or accurate Space Hulk terrain, but simply just enough cool pieces for some skirmish gaming.
The main idea for the Sector X is a remote corner deep in the bottom of the Underhive, right above the Sump, perhaps an abandoned industrial sector, with radioactive leaks here and there.
Materials: Aside of the Games Workshop's Manufactorum-sets (I grabbed a pile before they went out of production), the pieces include a broken array of plasticard, cardboard, foamboard, greenstuff, pipes, wires, sprues, and of course parts from random plastic kits. Also glue. Looots of glue.

The pieces get fully painted on the inside, while the outer side is drybrushed to shades of gray to simulate the dark areas between the tunnels.

Whole thing so far:

Paint jobs are not yet finalized. I want to first get a decent "table" built (10 pieces or so), before returning to maybe pick up some details from these. Got several more pieces on the workbench in various stages.

Terrific work. :o
-
Cool project, my heart warms to these things.
Back when I started with the hobby again, about 14 years ago, I built a 3D dungeon inspired by Resident Evil.
Your stuff really look ace!
-
So that's what one can do with those kits...spectacular!
I have had the kits kicking around in my room for quite some time, finally I have the inspiration and ideas to steal, borrow, build upon.
Thank you for posting!
-
This looks great!
-
Nice work.
That is a good plan to build the table's worth and not get bogged down with (even more) detail.
I look forward to seeing what you do.

@Tungdil, Ockman, Menelduir, blacksoilbill, Ultravanillasmurf:
Thanks a lot for the good work, guys! Here's one more piece I recently completed (minus some detailwork). You probably don't have to guess where it goes.

I don't really have this quick pace with the pieces, but rather have several in various stages. So far it's taken me about 1-2 weeks for building a single piece, and at least a week for painting it. Not full-day work, but rather a chill pace on the late evening hours.
Hoping to make another update next week with the next piece I'm working with!
-
Amazing corridor sections. Real labour of love there as making pieces to that level of detail and individuality is a LOT of work!
-
I think the grey drybrushed exterior is an excellent idea. Very smart, very good looking!
-
These are great! It looks like you have plenty of playing area and some lovely detailing on the pieces to date. I think the detailed grey exterior really adds a lot of value and makes the pieces look finished in a way that blank black walls wouldn't. Looking forward to seeing more!
-
Top notch.

You're right! Having built a lot of scratch-built terrain before, I was actually surprised how much work went into each of these pieces, with all the ready kit parts and bits.

Yeah. While playing (or while they're stored over a visible shelf), you're going to be looking at the exterior a lot, so the amount of details won't be lost there. Even though it almost doubles the amount of materials used.
I'm kinda planning of playing with the effect a bit, with a short-out elevator room, where only an emergency light is burning, so most of the piece, interior as well, is in grayshades, and only the surroundings of the emergency light is colored. Hopefully it will turn out well!
-
That is just fantastic!

Really amazing work.

I would kill to kill in such corridors :-*

Wow, that piece is excellent! Love the fallen floor.
If you think it's too heavy rust, check compatibility with the other pieces.
-
Just a couple of things - if you are short of inspiration, or would just like to see someone else's take using similar parts take a look at this thread: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=103347.0
Also, I notice that you are using foamcore to base these on. I probably wouldn't have gone that route myself. It's looking very nice though. :o

Haha! Considering the pieces are of different color and the amount of rust and grime is supposed to vary from piece to piece, this is easier said than done!

Superb! Thanks for linking. I hadn't noticed this project. Very good ideas, especially the elevator piece. Might steal that! 8)
I used foamcore (sandwiched between two pieces of hard cardboard) mainly for convenience and budget reasons. Found it easier to work with than plastic boards or MDF and I had it readily available. I coat my bases in a mixture of PVA & baking soda to harden them and give it bit of grainy texture. There are drawbacks, of course. I have to watch out for warping, and with at least one piece I almost melted the uncoated foamfore with careless spraying. But after the pieces are coated, painted and varnished, I don't think there's much to worry about. They gain a satisfying amount of weight for the thickness of the base and its coating, which helps to get them to maintain their position on the table... although if I have to mail these some day, that weight will ultimately work against me. :D
-
Great work!
Really inspiring :-*
-
Thanks, Maxx!
I've magnetized a few spots in each piece, so additional decorative pieces, mainly lights, can be added on later.

I also fiddled with the idea of adding LEDs to the lights, but I might stick with mere paint jobs. Seems like LEDs are very cool in dim lighting -- but you can't really enjoy playing in dim lighting where you can't even see the paint jobs properly. Seems a little redundant, all the effort considered.

Magnificent work.
-
Superb - frankly superb. Gives me an idea to solve a problem of scenery I had too!
Back when I was building these kits, I used fomaboard too - more as the levels and the plastics as the bulkheads for necromunda style terrain layouts.
-
gorgeous
-
Thanks for the good word, guys!
Here I'm trying out the previously mentioned elevator piece. Since many of the pieces so far have a door leading to the gray exterior, I thought that this one could work as a portable entrance piece for some of the scenarios.
Just testing the light effect. The jig is that the red emergency light is supposed to break the dull gray, and suggest there's some activity here. Not sure if I want to keep it, though. Maybe I just paint it in solid grayscale. What you think?

(Sprues were put into a good use to make those rails.)
-
Doing good work fella. I can attest it's a huge mistake, but it's still good work ;)
Keep the light but you need to fade it out a bit more and it needs to be reflected on the opposite railing edges to some degree.
I don't recognise the hatch part?
-
Interesting effect. Well executed.
My only concern is the rather coppery colour (it might be a white balance issue or all in my mind).
The light (and lit area) might do with being a more distinct red. I think it was AndyM of this parish who had some excellent neon effects.

I could try hitting it with Bloodletter (red glaze) to increase red and smoothen it. Thanks for the comment! Really just experimenting with it.

More lovely terrain, what isn't there to love.
Great work. Keep it up & thanks for sharing 👍👍👍👍
Just a thought,if I may,You could go a long way as space goes by making the walls magnetised & so collapsible.Adds variety, easier to transport, & will save lots of space. The downside might be paint getting scratched etc.
Again great work

Watching you having pre-made bits and pieces (walls, floors) makes me envious. In 15mm everything is a scratchbuild.
This piece is grea

That's a worthwhile project for someone to pursue! I don't personally feel confident to pull off that kind of separate walls system, though. I kinda prefer the feel of solid blocks.
As for transport and storage, I have the feeling it is already becoming somewhat comfortable. Currently about 8 pieces fit into one small shelf, compared to similar number of Mordheim buildings that would require 3-4 shelves of space. And if I wanted to be more compact with them, I could always pile another layer on top of them. Will take a storage pic once I have the 10-pieces set complete.

I've made a lot of scratch-built terrain (for example a Mordheim/Frostgrave city (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=85355.0)) in the past, too. Using this much ready plastics is actually a new experience to me. Thing that most surprised me is that it's almost as time-consuming! (Sometimes more...)
And still, about half of every piece here is scratch-built. Plastics just capture the attention with their detail. ;)
This said, I could never work with 15mm scale for its tiny-tiny details!

Three last pieces together.

Plan: to complete 3 more pieces before the end of this year to complete a junior-sized table, to be expanded a bit in 2019.

There's sure to be a bit of detailing to add to that wall panel and such. But the rust and grime already liven it up nicely, or what do you think?
-
Striking colour, the piece looks great, although a bit unfinished!
If I were you, I would add a contrasting colour, perhaps yellow or orange, on the cog that surrounds the skull, seen on the last picture. Perhaps something on the wall above the machinery on the right in the same pic. A red valve handle or something.
-
Honestly I think it's a bit too bold - I think you have to consider how the scenery must blend into other pieces and how the scenery is a backdrop for a game.
So I think the colour itself is fine and adds interest bug I would heavily weather the transitions to a rusty brown and let the blue be a feature in the interior.
Just my $.02

It's about the same level of finish as all previous pieces - lacking the fine detailing. Most details here will come to where you just suggested, to the panel. Some yellow, yes, and I was thinking neon green for the screen. Picking out some individual pipes and buttons as well.

We will see how it blends into other pieces better when I soon complete the set and take a pic of them all together. Not that worried about it; I'm going for strong contrasts anyway and want some pieces to really pop. That said, might give this piece an overall white dusting to dull it down if the blue seems too bright. So far, it gives me a nice factory vibe.

Right, here is the last piece, at least for this year:

The pace of completing these 10 pieces may have seemed overly quick. Just keep in mind I began building these in August, and have been lately just painting.
-
Love the checkered floor. Next best thing to black and yellow warning stripes, IMHO.
Also, the various levels of grime and distress work out very nicely - on all pieces, but especially convincing on this one.

I'm hoping to add some of those warning stripes as well to some metal platforms!

They're pretty interchangeable. Not all pieces lock perfectly with all others, but most do. Different setups are very much possible.

That's some seriously nice terrain. It would be fun to play on.

Yeah, I feel like I've kinda explored the possibilities of high terrain in my earlier projects (like this one (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=85355.0;topicseen)). In this case, the terrain is in one level purposefully. To make storage and transportation easier, among other things. I am fairly sure it won't get any elevations outside of portable containers and such.
I guess it could be seen as a kind of challenge mode to work in a single level after building structures that rise near to a one meter from the tabletop! :D
-
Although I got 5 new pieces on the way, I got a bit sidetracked. I want to create a few Kill Team compatible teams for the terrain. One of them is going to be Tyrannids team with the classic Space Hulk Genestealers.
So, here you can see how it looks like when there's a corridor full of incoming Genestealers!

Blood Angels terminators have so many little details they're real challenge to my mediocre painting skills. Much slower to paint than the genestealers-band, over which I mainly used washes and glazes.

Yeah, it's so Space Hulk-ey, I couldn't resist making these two classic Space Hulk -themed killteams first. Will probably be painting some Necromunda after these. But first a few more terminators to finish!

Finally the terrain itself progresses. It tells about the pace of this project that I've been working on the following 5 pieces since new year. Only just recently I got them basecoated, and the exteriors drybrushed. Painting the interiors is yet to be done.

It maybe slow but well worth it in the end as this is an amazing bit of work :)

Closer look into the new pieces.
First, the big room. This is the biggest I've made, about 28x24cm (11x9").

Then there's 2 small dead-end pieces to cut a corridor short.

This yet another cool WIP. It's nice to see how you build your pieces!
-
Thanks! I will post some more WIP pictures of how these new pieces progress. Here you can see how it's starting to come more alive with more bits added. Various parts from new and old kits, along with cut sprues and cardboard. Nice detail is how you only need half the amount of pipes if they are placed along the walls like this. :D

Nice.

I've been following your progress for a while now, and I'm really impressed by the amount of work you're putting into these marvelous terrain pieces. the detail and atmosphere are just great, and I'm sure it will be an absolute joy to game on these!
But I can't help but wonder at the prodigious rate you're going through all of those kits! There must be a small fortune in GW terrain in there by now. Do you know how many kits you've cannibalized by now?

Hooray! November's back!

@'smurf & Chimp: Thanks!

They're cheap few-euros LEDs from China, of which ebay is full of. I don't remember specs. Wires were clear plastic, but I wrapped it up in black tape. Manual switch, because bought a couple years ago. If I'd buy them now, I'd pick remote controlled ones. Maybe I get some of those later.

Thanks, man! I have to say that my initial plan was to build only half of this. But when I still had pieces left, I kept building it further and further. Now I'm (almost) sure I'm nearing the completion point. Bits box is fast emptying and I have to plan more carefully how I can fill every wall.

Less than one would expect, I'm sure! Let's see...
- 2 old Manufactorum boxes (new, GW, before they went OOP, for about 20 euros a piece -- still got a third box almost untouched)
- Box of used Imperial Sector (mainly Manufactorum) box parts, bought cheap from previous owner (This was a lucky find, without it the price would have climbed up at least 1/3)
- Thermic Plasma Conduits box (new, GW, still got about 1/4 of it left)
- Half of Chemical Plant plastic kit set (non-GW)
- Another cheap kit from Chemical Plant's manufacturer
- Half of Sacristan Forgeshrine (new, GW)
- 1 sprue of Zone Mortalis doors (used, GW, bought as bits)
- 2-3 sprues worth of Shrine of the Aquila floor pieces (used, GW, bought as bits)
Edit: Oh, and also a couple GW container sprues as well.
So, it's not that much. About 4-5 full 20-40 euros kits, plus a pile of assorted bits. The rest of it is just glue, sprues, cardboard, foamboard, greenstuff, wire, and leftover parts of various things. It's a fair bit of plastic, but you really don't expect to get 20 complete rooms when you look at those materials. Cardboard plays a huge part in expanding it, like you can see from the latest WIP.
I did some planning of what parts I would need. The Manufactorum kits were the most essential, with all of their parts usable to me. In Shrine of the Aquila, for example, I really liked the floor bits, but didn't find the rest very useful -- so I bought just the floors when I could find them cheap.
Half of Sacristan Forgeshrine and those Zone Mortalis doors were a recent addition to complete the leftovers I still had.

A bit of elevation is required with these, as Manufactorum room heigh is higher than in Zone Mortalis.

Cool door piece!
Is it possible to open?

Is it possible to open?
Yeah, it goes sliding off, just like in the previous piece.

Thanks for the good word, guys! It's nice to get this project back on the roll. It's been sitting idle for a while in the shelf.

Love this project! Would love to see the whole set together.... ;D

Nice details.

Awesome work, friend!

Thanks, guys! I'll certainly try to take some pictures of the whole set, although it is somewhat challenging. Whole of the project is already too big for my coffee/work table, and proper lighting is otherwise difficult to create. But I'll think of something. :D
