Title: BSC2019 Blasphemia Blackwood's Walking Tree Monster
Post by: Blasphemia Blackwood on January 04, 2019, 09:42:17 AM
I still only have a vague idea what it will look like, so it'll get a better name once I have that figured out... I have several treepeople in my collection, but none of them scratch-built. This will be fun to try.

So it begins. Today I made the tree critter's wire armature, covered that in tinfoil and then Milliput. I also attached some roots to the trunk.

The next session will be adding bulk and defining the shapes some more.

If you want to make it feel "monstruous", the three legs is a very good idea. The less anthropomorphic, the more terrifying

I'm sure it's going to look great, considering the cool imagery on your blogs.

Cheeers. A bit more progress today, nothing too interesting. More branches, and more bulk with Milliput white.

But now we get to an interesting part: adding the outer layer of bark and sculpting texture on that.

This is the final stage of my build: sculpting bark on top of what was done so far. I moved from Milliput on to DAS air drying clay for this task. The texture was achieved with stiff brushes and metal wax carver tool while the clay was still wet. Made sure it blends well with the natural texture of the roots I used for branches.

I did the legs one at a time to avoid messing up - waited for one leg to cure before moving on to the next. And then finally the main trunk. The plastic skull came from some GW kit, and it's there because all my treepeople have them. In my setting, it is mostly witches who make such tree constructs. If it is to be animated, the construct has to contain some part of an animal or human - something that has 'memory' of once moving on its own. Bones are convenient because they don't rot away, and head bones are where the mind used to be - which makes them the most potent.

All of this can be applied when making a normal tree rather than a monster. It's a fairly simple process, and the part where you emulate bark texture is really fun to do.

That’s excellent, Blasph! I really like the original and consistent fluff you come up with for your projects.

Another fan here - the backstories are as rich as the sculpting.
