Title: Even MORE dumb newb questions...
Post by: grubman on January 09, 2019, 06:55:07 PM
Do you have to re-hire (pay again) your surviving soldier members...or are they hired for life?  It sounds like a one-time payment...but doesn’t specifically say either way.

...and if it’s for life, if you “replace” them for a scenario, are they sitting around at your base to use again at a later date...or do they (and any survivors beyond your warband limit) head for the hills, and if you want them back you have to pay for a new soldier of the same type?

Are there official rules for this I’m missing?

Thanks.

1. One time payment.

2. Any soldiers over your limit (and you can't have 'spares' sitting in the base) leave, along with any items they have at the time (so if you have an archer with a magic bow that you want to cut, take it back first).

(Of course, if you want to name your soldiers you can always rehire the same one, but that exactly the same as just hiring a new soldier of that type, but depends how far down the RPG route you want to go.)

Thanks.  That’s what I was figuring...reading between the lines.  But I guessed this is a question that would come up after play.

Ha ha, yeah, I’ll be naming all my guys...don’t know if I’ll retire the minis when they die, of just reincarnate them (with memories of who killed them). :)

Ok...another dumb question...in a campaign, what happens if you get no, or very little treasure and most of your warband is killed off?  Then, one can assume you’ll be in worse shape yet after your superior opponent stomps you in the next battle.  I can’t imagine it’s much fun playing with a wizard and a soldier while your opponent runs around with a full boat of barbarians, knights, Templar’s, and rangers.  Is there any balancing mechanism?

Not unless you want to add one (have a look through old discussions here, many posts on potential changes/additions to campaigns to 'fix' the problem [if it is one]).

That said, you've got to remember that soldiers don't get that muc better compared to their cost - a man-at-arms isn't 4 times better than a thief, despite costing 4 times more.
Add in the swingy D20 and anyone can beat anyone - I had a game where my 1-wound treasure-carrying thief beat a h-t-h-orientated wizard and a knight in one round of combat.
