Title: New Bushwhackers from Crusader Miniatures.
Post by: nicknorthstar on February 12, 2019, 03:00:38 PM
Crusader Miniatures have just released a new pack of figures into their ACW range, titled Bushwhackers. But I think they are an eclectic mix better suited to the Wild West than the ACW.

See what you think.

I painted these up in the same style as I've been painting by Reb army, and actually I'm going to use them as colourful dismounted Reb cavalry in my army.

I did a 'how I painted these figures' article here: http://nstarmagazine.com/PAINTING_COBB_S_LEGION.htm (http://nstarmagazine.com/PAINTING_COBB_S_LEGION.htm)

Yeah, they're nice miniatures but not even close if those are supposed to represent ACW Bushwackers for the Border Wars.

I think they look great but I'm ignorant to what proper ACW Bushwackers are supposed to resemble. Perhaps someone could enlighten me...

I thought the film Ride with the Devil represented the Bushwhackers well:

I said the figures are eclectic, and that's why I've shown them off in Wild West rather than Big Battalions.

Yes, Ride with the Devil is spot on. The Perrys do a proper job of Bushwackers. Nick is right, those look more like "ragged rebs". Bushwhackers tended to wear civilian clothing (when they weren't masquerading as Union Cavalry) with big hats and fancy blouses. Being mounted, they also preferred several braces of pistols as opposed to carbines. I have a picture of great-great grandaddy around here somewhere.

There are different types of bushwhackers during the Civil War than just those in Missouri.
The CSA had serious problems with deserters and outlaws that formed bands and terrorized
areas of the South. Regular army units were sent to combat them at times. Also, there were
partisans in various theaters of the war. These would work well for those.
