Title: Brandlin's Host of the Silver Bear - MULTIPLYING CHARIOTS 16/7/20
Post by: Brandlin on February 17, 2019, 11:54:00 PM
An occasional thread about me trying to shoe horn some old grenadier dwarfs into an ongoing WHFB 5th edition campaign (and perhaps some other beardy goodness...)

Anvil of doom... because ... you know... i'd like to do something in the magic phase...

Gyrocopter.... because ... you know... 3" movement gets boring after about 30 seconds...

Apologies, the snow on the base is making the white balance in the camera difficult to manage....

That is a superbly turned out army. The anvil scratchbuild is particularly good.

Yeah, a solid base of a 5th (woo) edition army already.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys.

twrchtrwyth - Hopefully that Anvil will give me a chance against your pesky necromancer for once.

I have a dozen or more bear riders and they will be coming, however I can't use them in WHFB so until I have all of the main units painted, They will have to wait.

Very nice models and ace painting!

These dwarves bring back a lot pf fond memories when my buddies and I discovered Fantasy Warriors back then a long time ago...

I'm loving your choice for the main colour Brandlin, its very bold and unusual for Dwarves but it works.

Thank you for all the positive comments guys...

And the award for most unnecessarily complex battle standard goes to....

60mm square base - stands 170mm tall. No battle standard bearer yet, but you can see the recess at the front foe a 20mm square magnetised base...

The table and boulder with goblins sneaking up are part of the original Grenadier Dwarf generals set.  So i included them - the original banner comes with a dragon perched on the top - which is cool, but not in keeping with my army theme so it had to go.

Still no bear riders though ;-)

And yes, I really need to understand how to use my camera better...

That's a phenomenal battle standard! Loving the tails and ribbons on it! How did you manage to pull it off?

Keep up the great work on the project!
Title: Re: Brandlin's Host of the silver bear - Now with big flag!
Post by: Brandlin on March 04, 2019, 09:00:30 PM
Thank you HappyChappy439

The main banner at the front is a slab of metal from grenadier back in the day.

There are two fluttering banners at the back. Each is comprised of two long ribbons at the top, a large rectangular flag and then a row of pennants/bunting in alternate colours getting shorter as you go lower. I wanted a truly confused mass of flags full of energy, not a limp flat hanging flag.

Each flag is printed on my inkjet printer.  The flag /pennants are mirrored then cut out and folded over the brass flagpole and glued together, but i place a sheet of kitchen foil in the middle of the paper sandwich. This makes the banner stiffer and easier to bend as it will keep shape better. I use watered down PVA as glue nothing else. Spraying the printed sides with a gloss varnish before glueing helps to stop the ink running with the wet glue.

The design on the front started out as a decal (water slide transfer) but I messed up and printed it on clear rather than white paper. I had to go back and paint the white in the black surround. White ink is your friend for this - so much smoother than white paint.

Continuing with more green things for the dwarfs to fight... I give you 15 Grenadier Spider riders.

These are all grenadier fantasy warriors figures. But I disliked the idea of musket wielding goblins so the muskets have been converted into long trumpets. Fantasy Warriors has a game mechanic in it that allows you to take multiple musicians in a unit as they give you bonuses in threatening an enemy in attempting to scare them into routing from the battlefield. So its not unusual for orcs and especially goblins to have 2 musicians... I like the idea of a unit of 8 with 4 musicians though - effectively a marching (or scuttling) band !
