I have been collecting 20mm Classic Napoleonics for nearly 2 years now and have been charting my progress on my blog. https://ilkleyoldschool.blogspot.com/?m=1 (https://ilkleyoldschool.blogspot.com/?m=1)
I have had fun by sourcing and painting these figures.
Here are a few pictures of some of the figures.

And of course the man himself.
-
Interesting topic, the figures look very nice.
-
I well remember getting the 95th Riflemen, I was like Callan...
a proper wargamer!
:-*
-
I love the nostalgia of this thread. Well done ilkley. :-* :-* :-*
I remember my very first wargame 1972-ish . I went round my pals house with my unpainted airfix to be presented a table tennis table with hundreds of Painted Hinton's, all painted in your style, by his Dad.
What a slippery slope I was on! lol
-
Those are lovely. Must say that the older I get, the more often I prefer simple paint jobs with no shading, highlights, etc. - maybe because that is what my ability has declined to, making a virtue of necessity lol - but more due to the fact, I think, that the prime colours "pop" the figures more, especially in a case like this.
Anyway, splendid collection, and hoping we see more posts in the future!
-
Superb, great to see those lovely figures all painted up the way they should be, top stuff!! :)
-
Fantastic! I had a few Hinton hunt riflemen when I was a kid
-
Really enjoyed these. While they are all very impressive, I particularly like the way you have done the faces. I am struggling with my Der Kriegspielers because the facial detail is so variable. My normal wash technique really is not doing them justice. Can you describe your process for the faces?
Thanks!
David
-
Hi David
A Wash technique will not work on these older figures.
My method is to cover the face with Red Leather. I use Vallejo 70818.
I then paint the nose, checks, chin, ears and a thin line underneath the nose to represennt the mouth using Humbrol Acrylic Flesh 61.
Two coats of gloss to finish.
Mark
-
Thanks Mark, judging from the pictures I thought that might be what you were up to. I'll give it a try on my next unit. Thanks for the detailed instructions and colors for reference.
David

Finished the final 6 figures of my British Lifeguards.

-
Very impressive!! The R.A. are particularly good, lovely work. :)
-
Absolutely lovely, like so many I started out with Airfix Napoleonic's in the 60's, by the 70's I was living and working in SE London and found Rye models a tiny little shop owned by one of the guys who started tbr South London Warlords. That introduced me to mini figs, to this day my Napoleonic's are mini figs, including some painted in a similar style to yours in about 1978.
I did buy a number of boxes of the superb Perry Napoleonic's, but after painting one box of British infantry I gave a couple of boxes to a young cousin who showed an interest and sold the rest to fund buyi g more mini figs!! I just love how simple they are and painted in simple block colours they look fantastic massed on the table :-)
-
Nice old school minis! And you make excellent faces! Cheers!
-
Men in Black.
Paint restoration completed on a 20mm unit of Austrians painted as the Brunswick 1st Line Infantry. Flag is hand painted on an old coke can.

Very nice.
-
They are super!! Love the flag! :)

My latest shiny figures finished today.
Both of these are original Hinton Hunt figures. Picton has been painted with scarlet coat, rather than black, based on HH original painting instructions which can be found on Clives Hinton Hunter blog.

My Classic Napoleonics have been out on manoeuvres. In all the collection consists of 10 infantry battalions each of 24 figures, 4 cavalry regiments of 12 figures, 6 batteries of artillery with 4 crew. There are also 4 companies of skirmishes each of 6 figures. Finally there are 7 generals and a few odd single figures.
In all there are 347 figures mostly Hinton Hunt, both original and recasts, Alberken, Les Higgins and Garrison and the odd Rose and Douglas figure.

-
Very nice to see them arrayed, lovely!!! :)
-
Gorgeous, indeed :-*
-
Having seen these troops in the flesh last weekend I can confirm that they are gorgeous figures, the photo's don't do them justice. Excellent work Mark.
-
Outstanding! Brings back a lot of War game memories from my younger days. Only your figures are far better then anything we played with back then. Thank you for sharing here with us.
-
Some 50, or so, years old Douglas Miniatures French Voltigeurs with a Hinton Hunt Officer.

And a period feel

I use full strength bleach to remove old paint an varnish.
Here is Brunswicker pre bleach.
And after a 8 hour bleach he is a good as new and you can see the detail. Not bad for a figure that is probably 50 years old.

Great stuff.

My method is to cover the face with Red Leather. I use Vallejo 70818.
Why red leather?

I use red leather as the base colour and then blog in flesh.

Here are a couple of original painted Hinton Hunt units I picked up at my local Oxfam a couple of years ago.
I repainted the bases in Humbrol 80 and based them before finishing off with a nice coat of gloss varnish.

Beautiful, shiny little dudes!
-
Excellent figures brings back memories. Your troops seemed to be all singly based? Does it take long to move the figures each turn?
-
I have now finished the remaining figures for the 9th Prussian RIR (21st Regt in 1815). I hoped to finish these by the end of March but they are a few days late. So far this year I have now finished 38 foot and 12 cavalry figures - so 62 points.

The infantry are Les Higgins British rifleman. The standard bearer is a LH officer who has had his arm adjusted and a pin added for the flag pole. The flag is made from a fizzy pop can, a la Wellington Man. The Officer and Drummer are old Hinton Hunt figures. They probably should have black facings but I have done them in red to match the flag and add a bit of colour
-
Those boys are one big shiny smile.
-
hope you get 'round to throwing a green felt / baize / whatever cloth over the table sometimes ;)
[* I see you do ... my memory aint what it never was ... ::)]
Figures look great regardless.
BMW wimbledon - flipping heck - that takes me back. my local model / figures shop in the dim and distant - what got me into all of this ...
-
I lived in Ham and used to cycle over to BMW Models a round trip of nearly 16 miles. I also bought other bits and pieces from Teddington Model Supplies.
-
Beautiful figures, there is a particular charm to the classic look, brings back fond memories of my childhood.

Just in time for 'proper' Foot Guards to blast 'em into history's dustbin!
:)
-
Lovely paint job, look forward to seeing the whole unit.

Same here, a real trip back to yesteryear!
:-*
-
Those Hinton Hunt are really beautiful! Eager to see them all finished, too!

I finished my Grumblers - they were planned to be finished on the 18th June but I missed the deadline.

Good going there, Mark.
Best regards,

Really lovely. Your efforts bring back early wargaming memories, although my first figures in the 1970's were Airfix plastics. A friend and I then graduated to Prince August with metal gleaned from a local printer where I worked part time.

1st Batch of the 1st KGL completed. Tricky chaps to paint.

Superb! I well remember coveting British Infantry figures like that when all we could afford from us 'paper round' wages were Airfix munchkins!

With the price some original Hinton Hunt figures go for on ebay I am not sure I can afford them now. :)

Really nice paint job, your collection is growing. Look forward to seeing the completed unit.

fantastic :o

Those are some talented chaps, they way they're balancing their muskets like that :)
-
Delightful.
-
By gosh those are nice, Sir.
I remember 20mm figures and them being the top shelf kit.
Very well done. Thank you for sharing.
-
Thanks for sharing these with us! They look magnificent.
You do a great job on those. Sometimes I paint 25mm Minifigs for a gentleman from 'round here and I'm rather sure that these older figures are a fair amount more work than new 28mm figures with all their folds to work with and so on. On top of that gloss varnish is quite unforgiving in photos. All the more impressive since you do 20mm figures.
Anyway, great job.

These took way to long to complete. Hinton Hunt 1st KGL

My latest classic napoleonic unit has been completed. A Hinton Hunt French Line Artillery unit. The guns are I believe from the Warrior range.

Glorious in all their shiny toy-soldier beauty.

Lovely artillery, the collection is growing.

Latest classic Napoleonic unit. Prussian Silesian Landwehr. The flag is made from the thin metal foil from a bottle of wine.

Wow Mark! Those are lovely. Great job on them and so much braver than me to do the flag in foil. Very old school indeed!

Well its taken way longer to get this next batch of figures completed but they are finally done. Polish Guard Lancers. Hinton Hunt FN44 with separate Lance arm. The trumpeter has been converted using a transplanted arm from a plastic figure

A lovely squadron of lancers, another fine addition to your collection, what will be next?

Hi Paul
My next unit is a 6 figure squadron of French Line Lancers.
The Hinton Hunt figure on the left is both taller and fatter than the pirate copy Der Kreigspieler on the right. I add a bit of Milliput to add some extra height. There is not lot you can do to make figures fatter.
-
Look forward to seeing them.
Paul

5th Line Lancers completed this morning.

The unit is a mixture of original Hinton Hunt and Der Kreigspielers copies.

The lancers have turned out lovely, really super work on them. :)

Neatly painted with an authentic old school look! Cheers!

Now those Prussians are very nice.

Lovely stuff. Rear retro vibe to those chaps!

I have had a squadron of Scots Greys on my painting table for a while now. So this weekend I took a break from my 15mm WW2 and finished them off.
I got these original Hinton Hunt figures a few years ago and the previous owner had made alterations including docking the tails. They needed a bit of work particularly on the swords which were fragile. The trumpeter was made by a transplant from a Newline figure.
