Title: Mining town
Post by: Suber on March 12, 2019, 10:40:25 PM
I've been thinking for a while about the idea of building a board which may harbour a small mining town in the desert, maybe showing the entrance to the mines/catacombs I'm already (sloooowly) building for my Genestealer Cult (https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=107174.0). I was having too many silly ideas at the same time, so I needed to make up my mind. The best (and only) way to make it happen was starting to actually build something. This will require some extra planning (which has never been my strong point!), but I'm highly motivated. So hey ho let's go.

The very first thing I'm doing is a tiny spaceport. I found this Danish butter cookies box, so I knew I had no further decision to make:

I made a door with foamboard, as well as a few pillars:

I guess this gives you a better idea of what was in my mind:

It will be part of a larger structure, but for practical purposes, I thought it would be better if I painted the inner spaceport first and then built the rest of the structure around it. The other way around may prove unnecesarily challenging. So this is what I came up with:

A close up of the fire extinguisher (safety first!), a toolbox, gas cans... I should add some tools and dirty stuff, but it works for the moment:

It's but a humble start, but I'm already working on the rest of the building. I'll show as soon as I have something decent and then will elaborate about my ideas, as it will be easier to explain with a couple of pics ::)

For now here you have the blog post: http://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com/2019/03/inner-spaceport.html

It's going to take me some time at my ridiculously slow pace, so wish me luck!

Very nice work. I always like how the addition of just a few elements can totally transform a shape. And the painting just closes the deal.

But will it only be a scenic element? Or will there be some stairs? Because right now, it's a bit like a haunted house of mirrors for miniatures; 'a thousand ways in, but no way out...' ;)

I like your thinking, sir.
Build the interior, paint, then add to it.

Thank you all! It's going to be a very long way, but I think it will be fun. Of course if I've made a spaceport, I'll be needing some tiny ships of any kind too ;)
I'm dealing with the outer structure, but I'm facing some unexpected mishaps (which in fact should have been totally expected :D), as I'm changing my mind about where to place everything like every ten minutes or so ;D

But will it only be a scenic element? Or will there be some stairs? Because right now, it's a bit like a haunted house of mirrors for miniatures; 'a thousand ways in, but no way out...' ;)

lol I'm giving shape to what's around the space garage. Unfortunately the door will have to remain closed; the can opener was too much even for me :D
Title: Re: Mining town

Here we go!

The broader idea beyond the spaceport is, as told above, a whole new board. My old urban boards were made of plywood (I got those like a decade ago, I didn't even know mdf existed!) and foam.

But after these years I'm after a totally different setting, a desert town. However, I'd like to try an experiment. I'm aiming for a true 3D board, i.e., not a regular board with some buildings where the minis can climb to shoot. I'll try to make a board that has as much height as it has depth. Or even more, if possible.
For the setting, I'd like a backwater world, something in the mood of old Rogue Trader example Logan's World. That means to me a mix between the Anasazi cliff palace:

But with the density of Santorini:

Of course I cannot achieve that with my old boards. So I finally got a 120x60cm mdf board and will build the rest using foamboard, for weight issues.

The spaceport is 30cm diameter, so its building will have to be the largest all over the board. I didn't want it to be at ground level, but as high as I could get it to be. So I insist, the building is going to be huge...

Here it is:

50cm high, all I can do given my storage restrictions. Once on the board:

The structure is pretty firm, I reinforced every square without compromising its weight, so this could resist a tornado...

So OK, this is going smoothly, I like the aspect and the way it's turning out, lalala I'm so happy... Oh, by the way, I haven't tried to get it into the wardrobe, let's see how it...

...

...

ARE YOU %$#@ KIDDING ME!!??

It doesn't fit. Just a matter of milimeters. The space on the wardrobe is slightly more than 50cm, but... I didn't take into account the door. When opening it, it is impossible for the building to fit into the wardrobe. Silly me. :'(

After going through the five stages of grief, I finally made a decision. I couldn't cut the upper part, the spaceport makes it totally impossible. I had to cut out 2cm from below. Yup, the part with every square reinforced, which could resist a tornado... That one. :-X

Long story short, the building is 48cm high now and everything is in order :D

Of course what you have seen is but the most basic shape of what's to come. I have to add secondary structures and buildings, stairs, bridges and stuff. Just an example of what I'm talking about:

So this is the true beginning! A lot of work ahead, but I hope it will look nice when finished.

https://oldschoolworkshop.blogspot.com/2019/04/a-new-board-story-of-overcoming.html

BTW, I hadn't shown a pic of the spaceport with a ship in it!

I'll keep on building stuff and explain what's in my mind for the whole board.

Thank you, gentlemen! Due to real life issues I've been mostly off forum, but I'd like to post a little update on this.

The front of the spaceport building needs something, of course. My first idea was a huge service elevator from the spaceport door to the floor level. Once discarded, my second idea was a series of ascending slopes adjacent to the building. My third idea (ahem) involves the same slopes, but all over the whole board, being the town main street. That's what I'm currently executing, so, as I was telling, the building needed some stuff there! I'll put some adobe buildings in front of it, so I begin to get familiar with the basics of it.

At some point I found myself with these: a finished duct tape and a plastic sphere from some toy vending machine. I cut it in half:

And thought about some kind of tower:

A little Jabba-esque maybe, but one gets the inspiration from wherever it comes from...

Instead of building a proper door, I thought of leaving it open:

This might be getting out of reach, but I have to try...

Worse than desired, but still better than expected ;D

The overall aspect so far:

Lots of work to do, but I think I'm on the right pace...

Thank you! It's kind of a straightforward work for now, I'll try to spice it up ;)

I would be tempted to add another building on that balcony area....
 ;)

Now that you mention it... :P

I planned another block piece. To make it a little more interesting I wanted an open access. You can see, the stairs thing:

The idea involves a catwalk turning around the corner of the big building and reaching the rooftop. So I was designing a closed hut for that part, meaning that any mini getting there should enter it and would appear downstairs next turn. But when I was at this stage I gave the whole thing a second thought:

That is not the concept I'm trying to achieve here. That building is boring and unworthy. ;D

I cut the upper part and redesigned it all:

Now you can follow the whole path of the mini, it looks more interesting and it's still playable. Now I'm happy.

This is the rough shape of what I have by now:

I won't add more buildings here, but I still plan to have tons of tiny details all over. Doors, vents and stuff. I may have to paint at least some parts before I add the catwalks, but that will be an issue for another day...

Thank you!

Practical? Who needs to be practical? ;D

No, seriously, you touched a string there. The thing is that I barely play a RT/40K game a year; I try to make each game count. I've realised over the years that I don't really need a modular, repurposable board I can use in different configurations every few weeks. So I'm indulging myself with this extravaganza, trying to make this... thing, something in between a dollhouse and a gaming board.
I'll try to make it playable, and as large as my storage will allow. I may end up playing just a couple of times, but, oh, I'm enjoying the journey :P

That's more or less what happened to my previous urban board; I used it for three or four years, adding stuff from game to game. In the end it was 120x120 cm. This time I'm kind of replicating that, but exploring the third dimension and making it the cornerstone of the project. I have long term plans, so I hope I can turn them into something real!

A quick update of what I'm up to these days. I've prepared this piece, which will be the front part of the next section of the board:

You can see, my plan is to display some excavated houses on the rock

That's the plan; making it happen is another story! ;D

This will be it more or less...

I will have to smoothen the rough edges at some point (or maybe make it look more 'rocky', if you know what I mean), but it will do for now. You can see the general idea:

I have a lot of stuff to glue and lots of texture to apply; I think I'll try a colour test before assembling everything, to make it easier later.

More stuff (hopefully) soon!

Thank you! I've just finished (well... 'finished'... ;D) the next step. You may have noticed the is an arch down right. I built this section to give some depth:

As the whole board is going to be quite monochrome, I thought I could bring in a different touch here. Whitewashing looked the obvious thing to do, kind of a Mediterranean look. So some tiles looked in order too. I tried Andalusian tiles and came with this in the end:

(The sign over the door makes this board suitable for Firefly games too :P)

I though I should paint the rock-cut section before I glued it, or else it would be more difficult later. But once I started, I thought I could try a full colour test, enough of this dull white foamboard:

This morning with some decent sunlight, while I was painting:

The spray is darker than I expected, but I like it anyway, I can work with this. Again, all you can see above is quite crude, I have to work on textures, shapes and tons of details, but the general idea is there!

The verticality and density of features (doors especially!) makes this look so much more alive and realistic than most pieces of terain! And I hear you, I don't play that often, so I'd rather play 2 games a year on the same amazing terrain then 3 on bland modular stuff!

Thank you all! At this point I was needing to add some rough details before I could keep on building. I mean at least some doors! You'll see what I mean.
Back in the day I got some of the wonderful sci-fi doors RoeBeast made avaliable through KS, but I had used all of them! Being unable to get more (and not finding any satisfactory solution in the market) I walked the only logical, reasonable path I could take: I built my own ;D

The door itself is plain card and the frame is foamboard (the texture is Das putty). I added a green stuff control pad and some rivets:

Of course I couldn't make dozens of doors for the town (though it awfully sounds like me! :D). I needed to cast them, but I've always been scared to death whenever I've seen the process of mixing two components for the resin, getting it all right and so. Wow, not for me. Fortunately I've quite recently discovered this resin for dummies by Green Stuff World: you just have to add water and it's done :-*

I had an issue: this is what happened with the original doors when making the mould with oyumaru:

OK, no sweat, this means I have just one shot to get it done right...

Victory! ;D

It's not perfect, but it works at tabletop distance. So I've made another different one and some control pads, electric boxes...

(http://oi67.tinypic.com/2s8im46.jpg)  (http://oi65.tinypic.com/25sndif.jpg)

Let's stick to the doors for now:

I also had to fix a few texture and filling minor issues, this is the look of the town right now:

Oh, yes, you can see that absurd door up there leading to nowhere. In fact it's the access to this Bespinesque element:

I cut a gap under the door, so I can place the walkway, but still take it off for storage safety:

I have another crazy door, but I guess I have to give that side proper texture and painting before I can add all the stuff that will be placed here:

Fine detail will eventually come, but this at least will give you an idea of my intentions  :)

I am a big fan of making a master sculpt, and then re-casting it. For consistency (and sanity) that works much better for me. Plus, I feel like it is less of a hassle to put a lot of energy into a single creation, and then know I don't have to try and replicate it. Plus, if you want to make them unique, it is easier to add a little something to a full re-cast than try to make each piece unique.

Great work! This is one of my favorite threads to follow.

Thank you! I'm taking a break for a few days so I can work on regular minis, but next stage is already in mind :). It will be the start of the main street, the one which will eventually lead to the spaceport. It might take a few stages, but the planning looks good in my mind.

Well, apparently Tinypic has crossed me >:(. I'm struggling to slowly recover seven years of blog pics manually, and so I'll have to do over here on the forum. But for now I keep on making some progress on this board.

I got to a point in which I couldn't move forward until I finished the previous stuff. Specifically the rock cut houses:

If I built anything just there on the central section, I wouldn't be able to reach the inner parts with the brushes later on. So I started painting the doors and adding details...

Really easy; that large tube is but the case of an old brush, for example. That open plaza kind of unsettled me, but I wasn't sure of what to put there. I finally used a cologne tap -with some bits and rubbish glued randomly:

I added some lights and also some small signs over the doors; after all, they are block houses, the mailman has to identify them! (so he can deliver the next kickstarter full of minis, of course :D). The rest was a matter of AC units, tubes and wires:

I kind of wanted more level of detail, but I had to stop. This is a board, so it has to be playable, and I'm forcing the tiny spaces there. This is the compromise between a board and a doll house ;D
So now you get an idea of what will I try to achieve on the rest of the board:

It seems that I have some work ahead, glups!

Looking at doors on the right side stack, far up on the building wall, with small rails below them just about wide enough to slide in a walkway, I'm guessing.

... or jump. It would ensure you never have to bother getting back up!  lol

It's a slow work (and given recent news from the job, implying flying away some months far for home, it will be stagnated for a while :'(), but it's quite a fun one.

how will figures transit between that plaza and the main walkway areas?

When I build the central building in front of that open space there will be a catwalk/bridge/whatever I can get from scratch :D. For the doors up on the wall I'm working on these:

Slow progress is still progress. I've finished the wall and the corner. First of all I finished the platforms:

Then gave some texture to the street. I used some DAS putty and a rolling pin on a piece of paper...

...then glued it to the floor itself:

Easier than I thought ;D

I tried an experiment with prayer flags (keyword here is tried :?)

I didn't like them, I'll try again when I weather them a little bit.
This is how it looks like at the moment:

Now I can build the central section! Or maybe I can start decorating the other parts of the board. Even better, I can start something totally different! ;D

Flags seem a little... jolly for a mining town.

How about power cables, illegal antenna wires or laundry instead?

Ohh, and this is a very cool project. Often large buildings arent that interactive but this offers so many options for placing and moving models around, and the roof doesnt even come off, which preserves the look of the thing.

I like them too.
The only thing that does not quite look quite 'right' about them is they are all perpendicular to the string.
Tweaking them slightly so that they all 'drop' as if gravity was at work would solve that.

That's what I was thinking, would be better of it all looks a bit wind blown and torn? Maybe get colored crafting paper (the krinkly kind) cut flaps and drench it in diluted PVA?

Either way, this build just keeps getting better and better.

I'm with YPU on this: prayer flags are ALWAYS rapidly damaged, since they usually are made of very cheap fabric. I just got back from Tibet, i've that pretty clear in mind. :)

Also, they usually have all the very same shape (in the same row, but it's common to have several strands overlapping).

I really like the effect they give to the table anyways! <3

I liked the prayer flags. In real life they tend to be more muted in color from being in the sun. Oh, and probably being printed on materials that are dyed vice color fast. I'm sure they lose a little of the rich color every time it rains. Can you dip those in some water and see if the ink comes out of the paper a bit?
