Title: Palaeo Diet Project: The Giant Grazer gets a new head!. (UD:20/08)
Post by: Mason on March 30, 2019, 09:44:03 AM
Warning: This thread is pure fantasy. No historical reference work has been undertaken whatsoever!

Palaeo Diet: Eat or be Eaten is a stand-alone set of gaming rules for recreating prehistoric animal hunts on your table top. The game models a time when humans were not yet in control of the world around them, when the landscape could just as easily give succour to a struggling tribe, as it could cripple a thriving people.

Designed with solo and multiplayer games in mind, players take on the role of the hunting party while an integral response mechanism means that beasts react in different ways in different situations.

Having been in possession of Palaeo Diet: Eat or be Eaten for a while now, with its clever activation system based on the 'Songs of..' ways of doings things the intention of getting what I need together to create the setting, but one of the things that I was stumped on for some time was: 'Which figures?'.

I wanted to do something a little different to buying some 'cavemen' and prehistoric beasts. I toyed with a few options but then it dawned on me that what I really wanted to do was use the characters from the illustrations in the rulebook. They are very much drawn in what I will refer to as an 'Asterix' style, which is always a good thing in my opinion (I love those books! :D).

Looking around I could not find anything that would really fit without extensive conversion work, so I decided that I would have a crack at making my own.

Contact was made with Nic Wright, the author of the rules, and Andrea Sfiligoi of Ganesha Games, who distribute them, and they have agreed with me making my own interpretation of the characters in miniature form.
Thanks, chaps!
 :)

I figured that 28mm scale bodies with oversized heads to imitate the artwork would work best, armed with the various options that the rules allow, Spear, Bow, Club and Fire. This would result in quite large figures that would be fun and easy to paint and also make them compatible with various easily accessed toy ranges as well as wargaming miniatures.

So this is where it began....

(As you can see, a 'hound' was also added to the group as the rules give you the option of adding them to your group, although they can prove quite difficult at times! You have been warned...)

The heads have been made as separate pieces so that they can used with whatever body is chosen to increase the possible number of variations to a quite a huge number. The heads can also be affixed at any angle to add a certain amount of animation to the characters.

The heads, which those that have a copy of the rules may recognise....

(Ignore the two 'beastie' heads, as they are the start of something a little different which may well also end up as critturs for the PD:EE later.  ;))

And with the heads blue-tacked in place....

More later....

Thanks!
They are based on the illustartions in the Palaeo Diet rule book, so Orestis 'Orestix' Ermeides has to take credit for the inspiration.
If this set prove successful there are critturs and new hominids planned to expand the range.

I shall be making critturs if this campaign is successful enough to warrant it.

Here is the first offering, a cheap toy dinosaur, the Poundshopasaurus...

A couple more meals for the Cavefolk, this time in the guise of some larger Grazer types....

The first Update has been posted on the campaign page with some thoughts on how the finished critturs from the stash can be used in the Palaeo Diet setting....

The last of the current batch of creatures, this time in the form of a Crittur....

Critturs are a bonus source of food in Palaeo Diet, which can be flushed out by a Hunter moving through Thickets but they can be a bugger to catch!
This little chap is a Jibber, from Krakon Games, and looks perfect for something doing a mad dash to escape the clutches of a hungry Hunter.

Last night myself and Legionnaire Bert got a couple of games of Palaeo Diet in, with the Hunters waiting patiently by the river as a herd of Grazers set to drinking and munching the shrubbery....

In the first game, which we took as a 'training game' as Bert had not read any of the rules beforehand (and they are not difficult as the second game attests with Bert taking over running the Hunt with ease  ;)).

We needed to accumulate two points of Bulk for each Hunter taking part for the Hunt to be considered successful.

As we each ran two Hunters we would need eight points, with the smaller Herd Grazers being worth two and the Giant Grazer having a value of four points.

We came damn close in the first game, having taken down three Herd Grazers and wounding a fourth before they escaped our clutches.

In the second game we decided to use much more stealth and get as close as possible to the Giant Grazer to try and take him down with a concentrated attack.
It did not go all according to plan as one of our Hunters, Bet Lunch, was firstly the victim of a Stampede (from which she rather luckily emerged unscathed!) before she was attacked by the Giant Grazer itself and Wounded. (That 'lucky' leopard skin dress of hers was not so 'lucky' after all!)

The Giant was eventually taken down, along with three of the smaller Herd Grazers, and therefore we managed to accumulate ten points of Bulk and a Successful Hunt was declared, with much cheering from the Tribe!

In the post-game sequence we checked on Bet's injury, which resulted in her being psychologically scarred by her experience meaning she would be suffering from the Timid rule in the next Hunt.

On the upside Niels, the bowman, was declared 'Man of the Hunt' and gained the Calm skill which would enable him to be more adept at Ambushing in future.

Here are some shots from the games in no particular order....

Mad Sid creeps up on the Giant Grazer, stone axe at the ready....

Bet is about to be the victim of a Herd Stampede!

The Hunters creep up on the Giant Grazer....

Bet was having a really bad day at the office.....

The remainder of the Herd Grazers escape....

All in all a very entertaining evening and we shall be introducing this to the rest of our group as we both reckon it will be great fun as a light-hearted group game with everyone controlling a Hunter each.
I can see plenty of fun and games ahead with this one!
(Oh, and it can be played solo, so I can always have a crack at it on my own if I am feeling bored.  :D).

Had another couple of games last night, with the first very much going the way of the Hunters despite a really bad start to proceedings.
The less said about the second, only that an enraged Giant Grazer took out three of the hunting party before strolling triumphantly off to munch some more leaves.

Can I refer you to the first line in the opening post:

Warning: This thread is pure fantasy. No historical reference work has been undertaken whatsoever!

Also, this is the 'Fantasy Adventures' board, ya know...?

The first Apex Predator for Palaeo Diet is now finished.

.
I wanted to have an alternative to the more stereotypical predators of lions and tigers and bears and thought that this would make a suitable beast.

It is an Antimatter Games Skullcracker Bird with a little conversion to fit in better (bigger eyes were a must!).

Shown alongside a Blind Beggar Hunter for scale (it is a BIG Bird!  ;)).

It is rumoured that these huge birds were still in existence up until the end of the twentieth century (although they did evolve arms somewhere along the way) and are sometimes even sighted, albeit rarely, now....

Well, your earlier comment mentioned how BIG it was, so I thought that had rumbled me.
You can meet him at BLAM!

The 'creatures' are from various companies (the relevant information is mentioned in the thread) or are plastic toys.

The Hunters were featured in a Blind Beggar Miniatures Kickstarter that finished a short while ago.
They will be released once the KS has been fulfilled.

If you are interested in being a Late Backer for the KS feel free to send me a PM.

To be honest I am mostly delving through the 'mountain' for stuff, although the Sabretooth thingy was an impulse purchase at Dark Sphere last week, although it is much smaller than I anticipated. It will do, though as it is imposing enough up against one of the Hunters. Pricey on its own too. The 'Tooth and Claw' set is much better value if anyone is interested, as for roughly twice the price you get a huge ape, a jackalope and a couple of humans too.

That sabertooth will be ace!  :)

Sabertooth Cerberus??

Well, so do it but I cannot take a decent picture of it.
Here is what I have managed....

Introducing Badpuss!*

As well as the more cartoon-like, bigger eyes it has also had a fair bit of 'hair'added to it as it was not very imposing straight from the sprue, much smaller than I envisaged. It has been a nightmare to try and take a picture of and I hope it will respond better when in-game shots are taken.
Fingers crossed....

Here it is next to a hunter, which is making me think it needs a bigger base.

*He did originally have a more Bagpuss-like appearance with stripes but I got a bit carried away with the ink washes and this was the result.
Sorry Tarkers!

Now the KS is over I can add these to the thread....

The Clan of the Cave Bears will be an alternative Tribe (or even a rival for Tribal war action too!) for my own Palaeo Diet games.
I have some rules for them, that I want to run by Nic first before posting here.

Some closer in shots, both front and rear views....

We got a couple of games in tonight with two successful Hunts, with the first being pretty spectacular as the team of Hunters took out a marauding Badpuss as well as accruing enough food to feed the Tribe for the season.
Saying that, though, the second game was pretty sad with Vicious Sid being killed by an enraged Poundshopasaurus!

It is not a representation of an actual beast, but I did look at a lot of different prehistoric creatures for ideas.
I wanted something 'horse-like' so likening it to a Hippidion is happy reference.

These little buggers were going to be sold, but it has occurred to me that they would make great 'Angry Critters', so they have been given a slight rebasing (removal of barrels and other detritus etc) and been added to the Palaeo Diet shelves.

Love it.  Now I may have to seek out this game.

I would recommend that you do. It is not only good fun but also cheap and playable solo as the Beasts all 'react' to what the Hunters do (or bugger up!) so really does have a lot going for it. Most people play it in the 'real' worlf but I have chosen a more cartoony/fantasy route inspired by the illustrations in the book.
 :)

You can either get it from Ganesha Games as a PDF download:

Great project Paul. It's really coming along well.

Thanks, Dave.
You can have a go at Palaeo Diet at BLAM if you fancy trying it out.
 ;)

Some more creatures that will be going on to 'The Menu' soon....

Starting off with some Larger Grazers (which could be used as either 'Giants' as they have enough 'meat' on them to justify it, or simply as another species)...

The heads are separate so that can be switched between the bodies, and also set at slightly different angles if you choose to.
Here they are on the other bodies....

And Mummy and Daddy with a Juvenile...

Also, here is a 'Jubjub Bird' from the 'Follow That Bird' scenario, with his prized tail feathers that are a status symbol amongst many Tribes....

He would work equally well as a 'Critter' too.

Another Beast type are the 'Pack Predators', and here is the first of them, a 'Wooliff', which will be one of three variants eventually...

A few updates condensed into one....

I got the master castings of the Cave Bears back recently, which are on the paint table, and I hope to have them finished soon enough too.
I gave a few to a mate of mine, Big P, who has put me to shame by painting one up already with a rather snazzy zebraskin bag....

Having had their extra fur and enlarged eyes and ears added to match the others, and then daubed at roughly with the bristly end of the paintbrush, the Pack Predators are now up to four strong thanks to Old-N-Busted.
They should see some use soon....

...so: Many thanks, Mr Old-N-Busted for the kind donation to 'The Menu'.

I also slapped paint on a whimsical piece of 'living scenery' which will be making an appearance soon....

...which should prove quite amusing, for me at least.

Game pics....taken at random during two different games, one of which was considered a Successful Hunt, after they had driven off the viscious Three-Headed Sabretooth.
The other, quite frankly, was a DISASTER, with only one Wounded Hunter on his feet at the end of the game!

The Giant Hominid was a very happy and well fed chap at the finish, though.....  ;D

....another find in the leadpile, but I cannot remember who made it so, if you know where it is from, please tell me as I could really do with another.
The only thing I remember is it was some kind of Yeti purchased from CMON ages ago, but as they had a huge list of manufacturers to choose from, I cannot remember which it was.....

Help!

Here he is with a Hunter to show his Giant-ness...

Title: Re: Palaeo Diet Project for BLAM: Cheap Jungle Trees... (UD:25/08)
Post by: Mason on August 25, 2019, 04:22:06 PM
Thanks, Tarkers!
 :)

OK, with BLAM fast approaching I need to pull my finger out and get a few things done for this.
Beginning with some more PD-specific scenery....

Games of Palaeo Diet have several terrain features that the Hunters can interact with as well as utilise to screen their movement etc.
First to be completed are some 'Thickets'.

Thickets not only shield your approach to Beasts but can also reveal extra items for 'The Menu' in the form of Critters that can be 'flushed out' of hiding and added to the take for the game. They may also contain more dangerous creatures but that is something for later.
 ;)

The Thickets that I wanted to make were originally going to be utilising GW Woods but they have since gone OOP.
Rather happily, as it turns out, as I then noticed that War in 15mm had made use of some Playmobil plants etc to make some rather effective 'cartoon style' scenery for his 'Dr Who meets the Flintstones' project, which got me trawling ebay for some cheap parts.
I managed to pick up three different lots rather cheaply and set to making them work for this project.

Here is one of the lots, so you have an idea of what they look like in their original state....

As I am aiming for a slightly cartoony effect to blend in with the style of the figures, these would be perfect.

I already had these 'crop' pieces made by Silent Invader in my terrain pile, which had not seen any use for ages and thought these would make great bases for the 'trees' to sit on as I had developed a 'Cunning Plan!'...

Grabbing some leftover plastic sprue to use as trunks for the trees (which also rather conveniently fit in the holes in the underside of the treetops where the sprue narrows. Bonus!) I cut it to some random lengths and wrapped it in masking tape to help disguise the squareness of them and slapped paint on them and the treetops.

The, using green stuff and superglue to attach them to the bases securely, I ended up with these....

Combining the above with some movement trays made for OGAM...

...I now have some defined areas for the Thickets when placed on the table....

...where individual trees can be removed and replaced with figures when they are in the Thickets themselves.
Oh, and the movement trays can still be used for their original purpose.
Result!

I think the end result is pretty good and all three Thickets were made for less than the cost of one box of Citadel Woods, with plenty of leftover pieces that I can use to make more terrain features.
So, there will be more to come.
 :)

The cartoony style works well for this project, I reckon, and they should even be able to be used in other fantasy type settings interspersed with other plants etc to break up the look a little.

Having quite a few  more interesting leftover pieces will allow me to tinker some more and see what I can come up with.
I think that mixing them in with some of the GW kits could also work quite well.
We shall see....

Again, just covered liberally in brown/green paint mixed with PVA and wetbrushed over with a few successive lighter coats, with yellow added, and a final green wash to tie the layers together.
Tarted up with a few tufts and flock and they were done.

Here they are with the earlier batch....

...which look pretty good all together, I reckon.

The Cave Bears were fun and there will be some more small ones later on at some point.
 ;)

In the meantime, I have started messing around with this thing, which will see use in a few genres, as a Dark Young proxy in Strange Aeons, a native 'Beastie' in sci-fi and as a Beast to hunt in Palaeo Diet....where it will be a good 'balanced meal' being that it has a nice 'meaty' centre with good 'veggie' options growing on it.
 ;)

It is not finished as I am unsure just how far I want to go with the colouring as, at the moment, it is pretty generic.
I am tempted to convert it slightly with the addition of a removable 'head' or two for even more options, but that is something that which will happen later on at some point....

KILLER FLAMINGOS!

I picked up some Croms Anvil 'Gandowana' Terror Birds after seeing Captain Blood's versions:  to use as Killer Flamingos for Palaeo Diet.

They are intended to be used as HUGE birds in 15mm scale, but I think they work perfectly well in other scales as smaller birds, being approx. 40mm tall.

I will be using them as Pack Predators as I already have a BIG BIRD to use as an Apex Predator in PD.

Shown alongside some Ooman Hunters from the Blind Beggar Miniatures Palaeo Diet range (which are 28mm scale with'oversized' heads) as a scale reference.

I have changed the head on the Poundshopasaurus for one from a Grenadier Silver Dragon.....

There were two reasons for this:
Firstly, it fits in better with the rest of the Beasties on the Menu as they are all Fantasy creatures.
Secondly, the other head and neck was too long, so it would not fit on a double shelf in the cabinet with the rest of the Beasts, and I was fed up with it crying all the time as he could not play with the rest of his mates when the lights were out....

Cheers, mate.
His new upgrade cost four times the price of the rest of him, so he had better be happy with it!
