I'm currently building a collection of minis for gaming in Age of Sigmar universe, but with Rangers of Shadow Deep system. As with all my work on AoS so far, this project will also come with a grittier, gloomier aesthetic. I'll be focusing on Stormcast Eternals with their human allies, and various monsters they encounter.
The backdrop for my future skirmishes is a vast territory freshly liberated from occupation by Chaos. The huge and mighty Stormhost is gone to fight somewhere else, and people are working on resettling the area: rebuilding, repopulating, starting new kingdoms on ruins of old. There are lots of ruins around... Though armies of Chaos are gone, these lands are not fully safe yet. Wild beasts, the undead and small groups of servants of Chaos can still be found - especially in darker, less accessible places. The land is scarred, and it will take time and effort from the Free Peoples for it to heal, and not fall back into chaos and ruin. Only a handful of Stormcast Eternals remains there to coordinate and lead these efforts.
For my humans I'll be using mostly historical minis. There are excellent medieval kits from Perry Miniatures. I like the challenge of converting fantasy minis from these very toned-down historicals. Plus, I want a visually coherent look for my humans – and using a limited pool of kits works in favour of that goal. For now I have War of the Roses kits, but I intend to get the Agincourt ones as well.
As I said, I'm working with Rangers of Shadow Deep rules system in mind. I'd like to appropriate it for AoS28, with Sigmarines taking over the role of Rangers (player characters) and human soldiers as companions they can hire for missions. The list of companions includes a nice array of combatant character archetypes, and I plan to make at least one of each. This is what I have so far:

I ramble more about the conversions and ideas behind them on my blog gardensofhecate.blogspot.com (http://www.gardensofhecate.blogspot.com).
-
Great work! Your setting feels like a great fit for the RoSD game, similar but unique.
-
I absolutely love your style! Such originality! :o :-* 8)
-
I love it. Top Gothic grime right there.
-
Roughly 1000 times more attractive than the actual GW take on AoS, I must say. Those custom gryph hounds are especially adorable.
-
Drop dead gorgeous. May have to try my own hand at this Dark AoS jazz. You've created something really inspirational here.
-
Roughly 1000 times more attractive than the actual GW take on AoS, I must say. Those custom gryph hounds are especially adorable.
I fully agree. I much dislike the official AoS aesthetics.
-
Top job 8)
-
Well, I'm totally looking forward to this.
-
Youve done a fantastic job with the finish of the graveyard. Really a few notches above most.
-
I fully agree. I much dislike the official AoS aesthetics.
Eh, there are some lovely AoS-only sculpts, but many are just absurd and the catalog paint schemes mostly range from garish up to positively eye-searing.
-
Wow, you've sure managed to make those AoS cartoons into something quite impressive and lovely.
-
Very cool idea and the minis and terrain is spectacular
Rangers have great potential for different settings.
Thanks to you idea now I am thinking how to fit my Techno barbarian setting of Patalonia into RotSD
-
Very moody. You might be interested in this product.

Stupendously attractive and atmospheric. And wonderful use of the Perry late medievals :-*
-
Thanks everyone!
@Cyrus the Great - it's a cool thing and I thought about it when it first came to Kickstarter. But I decided against getting one because of moisture. I use various materials for my scenery that wouldn't react well to it.
A couple new minis:
Conjuror II (or 'conjuress'? is that a word?)
Converted Frostgrave Sigilist. Here she is next to the first Conjuror:

The mini is Ksenia Graveclad from Hasslefree Miniatures. Unconverted.

-
Crackiing 8)
-
Marvellous. Ksenia looks like she’s stepped straight out of a Hieronymus Bosch triptych of some damnation or other :-*
Your painting style suits this subject matter soooo well. V impressed :)
-
That wight's amazing! What the good Captain said on Bosch - but maybe even more Breughelish?
Fantastic!
-
Great stuff!!!
-
You work is always wonderful but I especially love ex Frostgrave mage with beautiful new head
-
very consistent and well executed vision.
-
Wow. This thread gets better and better. Thank you.
-
Again, spectacular! I am sorry, but I have to nick that pallet sometime soon and try it on a few vampires I have laying about.
-
Excellent scene... love the work you've put into the aging and foliage on the GW structures.
-
Agreed with everyone else! Your paintwork is phenomenal, you really capture this grimy, rusty dark fantasy look!
(Also, getting some Witcher 2 vibes from your first conjurer too! Is his staff a converted mace?)
-
Hot damn, your style is just … fascinating and unique. It has such a great bleak, Gothic feel … like Gormenghast. Does that make sense?
-
Thanks so much everyone!
@HappyChappy439 - yes, the mage was inspired by Witcher 2 mage designs, and the staff head indeed came from a mace.
@Cubs - yeah, it makes sense. :)
*
I've been busy with Mordheim2019 for a while, but I recently managed to squeeze this Kairic Acolyte in my schedule. He's converted from a medieval knight's legs, Zulu torso and arms, and a GW bird skull (plus some putty, ofc).

-
I like it ! Disturbing design and skin flesh tone.
-
My collection of soldiers for AoS28 has been slowly growing in the background, and now I've got nearly all companion types available in the Rangers of Shadow Deep rulebook. I guess I should finally try out the rules.

Awesome as "usual" :o :o :o
Thanks for sharing :)
-
These are tremendous! I like the EM4 dwarf conversion most of all - superb!
-
Wonderful. They have a soulless, despairing quality, like thralls enslaved to a darker power.
-
Really nice. The dwarves are amazing, especially considering how crudely detailed those miniatures are.
-
Also a fan, but the gryphs are particularly beautiful.
-
I love what you did here. My absolute favorites are the two Grenadier plastic dwarfs. Suptly customised and very effectively painted. Great update!
-
Man, this am best.
-
Don't know where to start. Absolutely fabulous quintessential grim dark horrific fantasy...(breathe pfew...).

Always brilliant!

Yes. A big big yes.
-
I have to comment again, what I really love about these is that they look like they've crawled through the earth or lain mouldering in a crypt for years before lurching into action. Just perfect undead, not like the pristine shiny 'Jason and the Argonauts' style (which have their own charm).
-

Highly agree! I really like the grave-fresh look of these undead!
-
Wonderful miniatures and paintjobs like always. The hollow eyes in particular makes them striking and unnerving.
-
So clever. Such a neat technique, but so effective.

Thanks, people!

An objective marker. The remains of Stormcast Liberator Dathalus, who led the first Free People reclamation expedition into the city of Suncastle. The entire expedition was lost, and my players will start the campaign by searching for Dathalus, along with his journal and reports.

Hey Ana
Are the broken pillars this set ?

I am looking for blocking scatter terrain to my very azyrite Frostgrave but I couldn't find decent scale photo of them.

I'm stunned - what amazing work you have done!
-
Absolutely love the whole thread!
-
Even just from a visual perspective (and it's interesting that you appear to use the normal lore for their background, despite the shift in aesthetics), your interpretation of the Sigmarines just manages to make them so much more evocative and interesting than the usual versions seen (and advertised by GW themselves). By (quite literally) dulling their shine and making them look battle worn, dirty, weary, they become both more grounded and human, while somehow making them more noble and stalwart as well.
I guess what I'm saying is that you've possibly sold me on the concept of Sigmarines. Can't rule out picking some up one day anymore...
-
Normally I dislike the Stormcasts aesthetic very much, but your painting enhances them in a very good and unexpected way!
HUGE inspiration.

Same.

So clever. Such a neat technique, but so effective.
Indeed. I keep fantasizing that if I ever fulfill my dream of becoming a wealthy philanthropic patron of the arts (and wargaming) I would combine the two and curate a gallery exposition featuring artists yourself and Ms Blackwood. It'd be both novel and blockbusting, I am sure.
-
More beautiful creations. You are an artist and I love your style :)

Thank you so much everyone! :-)
I have a new update for you: some henchmen for the Sequitor I showed last.

Seriously WOW

Superb vampires :o
-
It seems odd to use the word, but they are gorgeous :)
Love the atmosphere you achieve.
-
you certainly go the whole-hog with the grim bit of grim-dark, and all brilliantly done.
-
Those Warcry chaos beasties have more conversion potential then I'd been giving them credit for. Very nice.
-
Scary as hell, fabulous work :o
-
Nice, real old occult lamia-style vampires there.
-
I have seen this on FB and on your blog, and I will say what every body else in here are saying, that your style and conversions along with the muted colours are fantastic!
-
They are really excellent conversions.
-
This is not miniature painting. This is art. Outstanding. The Gardens of Hecate is a place of dark wonders.

Pretty cool stuff indeed!
Thanks for the inspiration.

Willies!

Several folks were saying that a proper paintjob would make the new ghoul models look the business... well, here we are!
-
Excellent nasty ghouls. Nice and creepy... :o
-
You actually sculpted penises on those figures? Wow, uncommon but anatomically refreshing. I saw the goblins in there, and they certainly look great, exactly like ghouls with the replacement heads. Better than the goblins they were originally supposed to be imo. Great stuff.
Thanks
n

Your work is like a Gothic novel rendered in 3D. Your vampire and ghouls are inspirational!

Awesome thread.
Wonderful unique and unsettling style.

Wow. That looks awesome, well done!
-
Wonderfully horrid work on the ghouls as usual.
Several folks were saying that a proper paintjob would make the new ghoul models look the business... well, here we are!
There's also a lot of conversion work there, and I don't just mean the genatalia. Paint alone will not save those figures. The stock GW ghouls are slathered with silly spiky details and body piercings that do nothing to improve the look of the models, and their universally hunched postures look ridiculous in large numbers, especially when ranked up. Moreover, some (maybe many) of those figs are actually LotR goblins, again heavily converted - and even without conversions those goblins make better ghouls than the WFB/AoS ghouls actually do.
You actually sculpted penises on those figures?
I was actually wondering why every one of them is male - although a couple of the 4-set image might not be, hard to judge. If you're going to do all that conversion work and draw attention to their sex, why not some distaff ghouls?
I played a multiplayer game two weeks ago with these minis. The full report is on my blog:

Entertaining fight, and a very good writeup. The personalities of the characters came through better than some RPG sessions I've been in. Good thing Gloryhammer's a Stormcast, he'll get reforged and have a chance at revenge - and to have a word with his cowardly lackeys.
-
Impressive! When GW released the Age of Sigmar lines a few years ago I never pictured anyone taking it in this direction. Excellent work combining ranges and other historicals, they all work together really well.
-
Thanks, people!

The rank and file GW ghouls have pretty poor poses, and I'm not a fan of their faces either. The Grymwatch ones are much better, though still not enough to leave them unconverted.
I was actually wondering why every one of them is male
Two of them are female. The one eating an arm and the one with long hair.

Two of them are female. The one eating an arm and the one with long hair.
Like I said, hard to tell from the angles of the photo. Sylvaneth model donated the longhair head, yes?
-
Like I said, hard to tell from the angles of the photo. Sylvaneth model donated the longhair head, yes?
She actually came that way. The best model in the Grymwatch box. It's the first female ghoul I've seen from GW since I've been in the hobby.
-
Ah, it's a Grymwatch fig. Haven't seen any of them in person yet, the FLGS had some problem stocking them. I see I'll have to get a set when I do.

I received the Frostgrave Wizards II kit last week, and immediately kitbashed a model to see how it works with Perry bits. Works well. :)

Orthros the Defender is a Stormcast Sequitor. I got rid of the giant pauldrons and weapon, as well as the helmet halo. This mini was a commission, so he's not staying with me for long. He is likely to eventually get a twin who will remain in my possession.

The monk is a mini from the Reaper Bones Black range. First time working with bones black, and it's an improvement over the original bones plastic. Less bendy, for sure. The mould lines are still a bitch to remove, since the material is still not great for filing or scraping.

I really "like" the Ghouls, very unique! I presume the disturbing ladies are a conversion?

They're Bad Squiddo, and surprisingly I think they're the originals without conversion. I don't know if Annie decided to keep the line after they received mixed reviews for their graphic nature.

Stunning visions you present here! Now that is world building!
-
Very real and gritty. Love it.

Cheeers, folks!
@Agis - yeah, they're from Bad Squiddo, like Cubs said. One is slightly converted.

Realised I forgot to post the last group of models I made. The Iron Legs are adventurers working for the figurehead Queen of Eagelroc. This warband was designed by my brother Ivan and executed by me.

Lukas the Fortunate is the leader if the warband. He is a mercenary, treasure hunter and explorer, whose accomplishments are more often than not the product of inexplicable luck rather than skill or wit. He was built using mostly plastic Perry parts. The pistol is from Freebooter Miniatures. The sword and helmet have been heavily modified with wire and putty, and the ruff around his neck is sculpted from scratch.

Padre Ambrosius, a corrupt priest of Sigmar. The model was based on a WH40k Astropath. The head came from Warlord plastic Zulu warriors kit.

Sebastianus is a soldier with an appetite for human flesh. Perry plastics with some sculpting.

Narses is a rifleman, and a notorious coward. Also a Perry plastics kitbash with a bit of green stuff.

You really do make your figures look creepy! Fantastic work.
-
What a fabulous style you have , this web thread is just pure tetanus!
Love it :)

Beautiful work :-*

Great inspiration, ideas and execution in this thread. Fascinating color palette you have chosen. Brilliant weathering and distressing work, especially on the undead.

Great work! How did you do the faces for the deadwalkers? You do a great job getting a lot of mileage out of the Perry plastics!
-
As ever, the shamblers are fantastic :-*
You’re a genius.
-
Fabulous ... how do you make something so dark and grimmy still look so clean ...
-
Grim! Excellent work.

Great work as always. Is maybe Till a reference to Rammstein? It even remembers the video of Keine lust!

Thanks everyone!

I took normal heads, hollowed out their eyes and noses with a fine drill bit. Then did some fiddly sculpting. I was happy to discover I managed to pull it off.

It's mostly about where you choose to put your highlights.

Yes, my brother named the ogre after Rammstein's frontman. :)

Deadwalker Paragons are reanimated remains of great heroes from Sunhold's history.
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uIX5FLioahE/XnHM9GrXyUI/AAAAAAAAHCI/7aHx5QmRIoERq8vDNVTYvmDfFOnTYR2uwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/aos28%2Bdeadwalker%2Bparagons%2Bsunhold%2B2.jpg)
The models are 40mm resin knights from V&V Miniatures. They're fantastic sculpts and casts; I will surely be purchasing more models from them in the future. In my usual fashion, I converted the minis: most notably replaced their original heads with death's head helmets sculpted from scratch.
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E6wk9QJ3Wpo/XnHNCkN-xVI/AAAAAAAAHCM/iNRwGz958TwBPkz4lBjibIY0xNcqI8INwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/aos28%2Bdeadwalker%2Bparagons%2Bsunhold%2B1.jpg)
I used Warlord Games and North Star doggos for Deadwalker Hounds. Drilled out their eye holes and gave them an appropriately filthy, dusty paintjob.

I rebased my Mordheim MMXIX cultists to fit my AoS collection, and added a woman and child to their number.

Superbly unsettling :-*

Thanks!
Spirits
Many of these waited for their turn since the time Soul Wars was released. The whole lot only took me a few hours to paint, as the almost monochrome colour scheme I used is really quick to do. I can whip up a step-by-step tutorial if there's enough interest.

Brilliant again. Your entire body of work feels so original as well as so consistently beautiful (in a wonderfully creepy way). And your technical and artistic execution in both painting and modelling is first class. This is one of my all-time favourite threads on LAF. Please keep it going :)

SECONED! All of it.
Indeed very unique, and yes we need the "step-by-step tutorial"!
:)

Wonderful stuff again. The way the features are disturbingly hidden and just a hint of a face is showing, makes it all the more creepy.
-
Fantastic,and yes please to a tutorial :)
Your use of highlights is fascinating,a very confident painting style, love it :-*
-
Yes please on the tutorial!
-
Continually brilliant and creepy work!
-
Excellent work! and agreed with everyone else, I'd definitely be interested in seeing a tutorial!
-
I just found this thread and went through the whole thing. I love how well all of the miniatures convey the same atmosphere. I'd never have considered painting the Perry miniatures like this but I have a few sitting around and am inspired to give it a go!
-
Awesome work - really evocative and scary.
A tutorial would be most appreciated.
-
+1 for the Tutorial.
You've talked about your style in broad strokes before, but details would be welcome.
The spirits look as good as anything else in the thread!
-
A tutorial would be neat to see. I bought some miniatures from Blasphemia about a year ago and they have a very beautiful and unusual look to them.
That GW Nighthaunt range is maybe my favorite of their modern output, they really nailed it on that release and your take on them is wonderful.
-
Fantastic! Wonderfully original stuff! :-*
I've just caught up with the cultists too, and that woman with child is exceptionally creepy! Cracking! :o

Echoing other's comments. I also would like to see a tutorial.

fantasticly creepy and atmospheric

Terrific. I've just found this thread. Better late than never.

Great tutorial and even better results!

Holy Macaroni!
Where on earth is that crest from? Did you make it yourself???
EDIT: Ah, it's a GW bit. But still!
-
Wow, had no idea that first piece even existed, and that the second could look so much better without the massive boneboy statue. Some very useful information all around, and of course your delicious paintjob that brings out the best of these sets is a pleasure to look at too.
-
@ FramFramson - yeah, I didn't make it myself, GW did a wonderful job. I hope some day I will make a full ossuary skirmish board with a bunch of such bone art.
@ Coenus Scaldingus - thank you!
-
I'd wager that the sculptor who got to make that must've had a lot of fun.
-
@FramFramson - totally!

Serious cross-over into art at this point. Your latest work blows me away - I love how you are capturing these subtle shifts in atmosphere.

That dark purple cloak... :-*
-
Great job!
I love the weapon swap on the first two stormcast. It's a simple conversion in itself yet the gothic swords really change the feeling and the style of those stormcast. They feel more grim and dangerous than if they were wielding usual SE oversized weapons.
My favorite is the #2 because I love the freehand on the clothes.
-
As good as always!
My favorite is the #2 because I love the freehand on the clothes.
2nd ! :)

I just love that blue-skinned barbarian / unarmoured Stormcast - really unexpected, but beautifully done.
-
Somehow missed this thread until now. The creepy disturbing doomed atmosphere your figures exude is fantastic. The re-imagining of the GW AOS and other figures is amazing. As others as said, who knew they could look so good.

Thank you again, everyone!

Very good tutorials. Generous of you to take your time to show your process.

I have a few new things to show. First, a trio of skyclad mad lasses is a recent commission.

Next is a Crooked Hermit, a figure by a friend from the community who just got into having his sculpts cast in meta (https://www.etsy.com/fr/shop/LazaraieShop?ref=seller-platform-mcnav)l (the paintjob is mine).

As I understand, there are many duardin who revere Sigmar as their god, but all Stormcast Eternals I've seen so far are distinctly human in shape. It's possible that Sigmar completely disregards the species of his fallen worthy champions and reforges them all into idealized human form. Or, we simply haven't been shown any non-human Stormcast yet... I don't know, but I made this dwarf Stormcast. The model was converted from the leader of the Warhammer Underworlds Fyreslayer warband. The head is from some kind of Stormcast hero.
I'm known for treating Warhammer lore as a polite suggestion rather than hallowed gospel, but I'm actually curious what (if anything) it says on the matter of non-human Stormcast. Does anyone know?
The quartet of mortal stunties came from Hasslefree Miniatures. There are tons of dwarf miniatures out there, in many different styles. These are toned-down, perfectly-sized dwarf soldiers that I wanted in my collection as soon as I spotted them in Neunfinger's Oathmark and The Witcher thread (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=125932.msg1606752#msg1606752) . I replaced their right hands with Perry medieval plastic ones, and gave them thumbtack/roman shields. They will be joined by crossbow dwarfs converted from eM4 plastics, and will provide some variety to my prevalently human pool of soldiers and mercenaries.
-
Those boys make me smile. I do like the less obese Dwarves (Dwarfs?) and you've done them proud.
-
Yep, if you’re going to have dwarves, those are the dwarves to have, for sure. Superb :-*
-
Outstanding paint. :o
-
They look fantastic, I especially like the faded coat of arms.
I was looking forward to seeing your take on the Hasslefree dwarves since you said you were ordering some and, as expected, they turned out splendid.
-
Brilliant - they look like they've stepped out of the Nibelungenlied.
-
Superb. Love the dwarves but the whole aesthetic is brilliantly horrific.
-
Excellent dwarves
-
Absolutely stunning sculpts, and you've done a cracking work on them :D

Thanks folks!

Oh I LOVE these ones. Totally evoking medieval demons. Are the faces conversions or sculpted by you? Or...?
-
Wow! Those are amazing: straight out of some especially dark medieval bestiary or altarpiece.
-
This thread is amazing. The gothic aesthetic of your minis is bonkers. So good.
I'm intrigued by your idea of playing AoS using different rules. A friend and I had planned to start an Old World skirmish campaign probably using Pulp Alley, but set firmly in the Old World. I had even bought a good selection of historicals to use as Imperials and Tileans, but the whole thing was pretty much canned by the pandemic. Still wracking my brain on a fantasy setting but I don't want anything too scary or unsettling as I may use the minis to play games with my kids. Your terrain is also fantastic, but looking at it makes me realise how much I would probably need for something like Mordheim or the Reikswald
-
They're great, really creepy looking. Excellent work.
-
Holy crap, those are rank.
-
So sick and disturbing, beautiful!
-
Your recent updates are amazing :-*
-
Thanks, everyone!
Oh I LOVE these ones. Totally evoking medieval demons. Are the faces conversions or sculpted by you? Or...?
Yes, I removed the original bird faces and sculpted these. I was going for an Ian Miller beastmen look. Like in his Death on the Reik cover illustration.

Pulp Alley lightly reskinned makes a fantastic fantasy ruleset, we've been running it for a few months now with my tiny COVID pod of three of us, now on hold as we go into Lockdown II Winter Boogaloo.
Those beastmen are glorious, grim, and terrifying!

Brilliant. Don`t know what else to say to be honest. Love everything you do.

New arrival: Gaunt Summoner of Tzeentch. Some minor changes were made on the staff, disc and body. The outlandish paintjob was inspired by some of the more colourful works of Beksinski, and it will surely stand out when he's put on the board.

Brilliant!
I wonder if you ever play Joy Division while you game?
-
That's certainly going to make an impact!
I'm really wondering if painting in the eyes/mouth would have been worth it or not. I'd be tempted to photoshop the picture to see what impact it would have (this is what I do when I'm really torn about a painting decision or looking for direction).

:D Haha, I mostly play dungeon synth and game soundtracks.

I considered it for a bit. Thought it would look more alien if not. Maybe I should photoshop it to check, it wouldnt hurt.
Some new stuff! Looks like I neglected posting on the forum for a few weeks.

Sick, rotting, disturbing, so lovely as always! The sorcerer and the assassin (what kind of model is this?) are especially good.
-
Brilliant. Love the mercenaries :-*
-
Fantastic.
-
Stunning! That Demon is faaaantastic!
-
Superb :- I love your lighting, your miniatures would go well with my Tower on the Hill :D
-
A lot of awesome stuff! I’m particularly impressed by the beastmen and the demon.
-
Very atmospheric.
-
More amazing additions to your collection.
-
Thank you very much everyone! :)
...the assassin (what kind of model is this?) are especially good.
It's a Fury from Warcry with its wings cut off, head replaced with a Bonereaper Mortek Guard head, and some spines sculpted on the back.

Warpriest and his winged gryph doggo.

Plus one more, to what everybody has said.

Terrific job on those minis 👍
The assassin is just great :-*
-
Very atmospheric. The gryphon is an especially fine looking beast.

Double Porst - whoops!
-
This is going to maybe sounds a bit counter-intuitive, but I'm noticing your painting has become slightly cleaner over the course of this thread. By which I mean the details read more clearly without in any way compromising your style or the individual colour & tone choices.
Rather a long-winded way of saying you're getting better and better at this. :D
Where's that gryph-doggo from, by the way?
-
Amazing, as always! Where is the gryph from?
-
The four legged duckie is superb :-* :-* :-*
-
Another +1 on loving the figures and being especially enamoured with the lil' gryph.
For those asking about the figure, they're found in various Stormcast sets, but normally wingless. Wings look like the ones from the Warcry Raptoryx I think, a.k.a. honkasaurus, the chaotic murder goose? Good fit at any rate, makes it look mightily majestic. Such a good boy.
-
Thanks everyone!
The gryph hound is from Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower, with Warcry Raptoryx wings added.
-
Nice.

The Disgraced Knights are figures for my fantasy skirmish games, representing heavily armoured warriors with a chequered or outright dark past. These disreputable men and women can be found in armies of heathen warlords, border castellans, and rogue kings.
Check them all out in the new post at the Gardens of Hecate blog:

Back with a bang! This thread reads like an art gallery, there's just so much lovely eye candy to enjoy.
-
I concur with Cubs. Wonderful conversions on the miniatures complimented by evocative brushwork.
Genuine art.
-
Great work! Those disgraced knights look brilliant.
-
Cheers Cubs, Muzfish4 and Rick W.! These days I'm preoccupied with the book and Kickstarter and don't have much time to work on personal minis. I was happy to be able to finish these guys at last.
-
I'm just finishing a book myself at the moment. When I've done that I'm going to colour in another one.
-
done a great job- really cohesive style. getting a de saturated palatte to read well is a real skill. these are really evocative
-
Great looking warband. I too like the muted colour scheme - it suits them well.
-
These are magnificent - the chaps with the curly horns in particular!
-
Damn, those disgraced Knights look awesome.
-
One of the things I love about these is how the black background enhances the images enormously when it would not do so for a lot of other minis ESPECIALLY for such dark-toned work. That's a testament to just how well the figures read, even with bits of them just on the verge of fading into the background.
I'm just finishing a book myself at the moment. When I've done that I'm going to colour in another one.
Damn pros! Here I am still drawing in the lines between the numbered dots... ;D
-
Awesome concersions with a very dark, coherent style, I love it!

Thanks a bunch everyone!
Here's some more.

Wow! Just, Wow! :-*

Stunning. That first manky thing is minging.
-
Sumptuous as ever :-*
The demons are just wonderfully creepy.
What do you use for your Stygian black backdrop?
-
Holy Moly!
-
Nice and gribbly. :D
-
That Vargskyr (isn't that a brand of Icelandic yoghurt?) is the first time I've regretted missing out on that Cursed City box. Absolutely wonderful!
-
Thanks a bunch, folks!
What do you use for your Stygian black backdrop?
For smaller stuff, a black t-shirt. For scenic shots I have a larger piece of black cloth.
That Vargskyr (isn't that a brand of Icelandic yoghurt?) is the first time I've regretted missing out on that Cursed City box. Absolutely wonderful!
You're partly right. Skyr is a type of Icelandic yoghurt. A Vargskyr is what happens when a wolf gets bitten by said yoghurt.
I'm hoping they will release that model (or another version in a different pose) on its own at some point. I want at least one more so I can convert it.

Well, looks like were-yoghurt is due for a mostly separate release (with a few other characters presumably on the same sprue) just next week:

Time for some hostile geometry.
These monsters are my version of Tzeentch Horrors for WHQ: Silver Tower.
Brimstone Horrors = Abnormal Icosahedra
Blue Horrors = Uncanny Dodecahedrons
Pink Horrors = Anomalous Polyhedrons
(https://gardensofhecate.com/images/made/images/uploads/DemonicGeometry5_1000_852_80.jpg)
I've always found geometry creepy. Must be the regular angles, straight lines and smooth surfaces that rarely occur out there in the world make it feel decidedly unnatural. And in my mythos, demons are commonly uncanny alien anomalies. Things that don't belong to the material sphere humanity inhabits. Good examples of what inspired these demon miniatures are the monolith from Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and The Dead Zone, a 2016 photography series by Julien Coquentin depicting a black cube eerily levitating through forests and above ponds. I love those images so much; they fill me with dread and fascination.
The models are resin 3D prints of geometric sculptures. The 3D models were created by mathematical sculptor George W. Hart, and are based on physical sculptures by Morton C. Bradley Jr.

Interesting and very effectively alien, although they do disappear a bit against your black photographic backgrounds. I've done something similar years ago with arts & crafts store beads stuck together to be an extra-dimensional xeno critter in (of all things) FASA's Star Trek RPG. Probably both cheaper and easier to 3D print those though - not that beads are especially expensive.
-
Interesting take on the demonic. I never thought about that geometry could be considered scary, but then Lovecraft based much of his horror off of strange geometry. I guess places like the Giants cosway would be nods of power for their kind.
-
Fantastic as always :- My work is often dark, and I worry other perhaps don’t get it,so thanks for the continued tenebrae and inspiration :)
-
Brilliant concept, excellent execution. However I agree that they get a bit lost in the dark photographs.
-
Thanks people!
Behold, a Skaven Screaming Bell with the skaven-ness stripped away. This model can be an objective, a unit or a static piece of scenery. With optional accessories I'll be adding later, it will be customisable for different factions.
