Title: Raglan's Mortal Gods - Test of Courage
Post by: Lord Raglan on April 21, 2019, 10:23:37 PM
(https://sculptingpaintingandgaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/42628344_10156676840018134_3945064865969733632_n-777x354.jpg)

As a very kind gift, my friend recently purchased the game and the city state supplements for me. Although I was hugely grateful and love the game mechanics, I am not a fan of plastic miniatures. As a result, I will sell them on eBay and use the dosh to replace them with metal ones. My Ancient Greeks of choice are Crusader, Foundry and Aventine Miniatures. I previously had quite a large collection of Greeks while focusing my attention to the big battles of the Peloponnesian era, so this Mortal God foray will be very conservative in comparison (I hope).

Over the coming months, I intend posting regular up-dates on the miniature collection and then some nice looking battle reports.

1st Athenian Lokhoi commanded by Aegeus

The Athenian Army was a city-state militia in which every able-bodied, adult, male citizen was obliged to serve. Men were ranked by wealth, and their service obligation reflected their resources. Roughly a third, mainly formed of prosperous peasant-farmers, were deemed rich enough to equip themselves to fight as hoplites – heavy infantry – in the phalanx.

Peloponnesian War

The Peloponnesian War was fought between the Greek city-states of Athens and Sparta. It lasted from 431 BC to 404 BC. Athens ended up losing the war, bringing an end to the golden age of Ancient Greece. The word Peloponnesian comes from the name of the peninsula in southern Greece called the Peloponnese. This peninsula was home to many of the great Greek city-states including Sparta, Argos, Corinth, and Messene.

After the Persian War, Athens and Sparta had agreed to a Thirty Year Peace. They didn't want to fight each other while they were trying to recover from the Persian War. During this time, Athens became powerful and wealthy and the Athenian empire grew under the leadership of Pericles.

Sparta and its allies became increasingly jealous and distrustful of Athens. Finally, in 431 BC, when Sparta and Athens ended up on different sides in a conflict over the city of Corinth, Sparta declared war on Athens.

Looking good! Liking the free hand painted shields.  Looking forward to this game myself.
I don't imagine too many Thureophoroi were running around yet though in the age of hoplites. From my understanding those came out moreso when Greek was transferring out of the Hoplite stage into other troop types..

but don't let my rambling stop you from playing with what you want ;) They look great.

I appreciate Thureophoroi were a little later in the proceedings, but these were the only metal light inf I had in stock. I have just ordered some pelasts with jav, bows plus some stone throwers.

The oracles say:
"Woe the plastic spears, that do not bend, but when aged, break with the brittleness of a fast temper".

I love the plastic hoplite models we have access to now. Last weekend I used some that I have been building to play test another game (which shall not be implicated). A number of the lovely spears busted, as well as numerous plastic javelins. I realize that I live at the ends of the earth where desert dry conditions are common which exacerbates the problem, but it is a problem. The lovely sculpting of the blades and sauroter bits and the leather handle reinforcement are so well done, and for some models that do not get rough handling may suffice, but the rank and file will deteriorate before your eyes. Much like spears broke in reality.

Sadly making one's own spears is the best way out, or purchasing metal spears with already pounded tips. I'm certain I am indeed preaching to a well informed choir here. Maybe what is needed is to clamor that companies offer some well cast 28mm replacements for the inevitable breakage that will someday vex the owners of their magnificent hoplite collections.

By the way Gorgon Studios have some really well done and wellcast models for your showcase Spartans, for these new fangled skirmish games, just sayin.'

I love the Gorgon sculpts, I have 50 odd ready for the paint brush as I write. In respect of hoplite spears, I have now acquired the cast ones from Keith at Aventine Miniatures.

How do the Gorgon ones compare in size with the Victrix and Footsore ones?
Title: Re: Raglan's Mortal Gods - Test of Courage
Post by: Jjonas on May 10, 2019, 06:30:57 PM
Victrix and Gorgon are completely compatible, I will assume that the Footsore are as well. The resins seem thinner to me.

Victrix plastic Corinthian, then Gorgon Studios metal Spartan, then Xyston metal Perikles all 28's. The Xyston 28's are nice too bad they did not make more!

I do like the Foundry Greeks, one of the best ranges around IMHO.

I like Foundry Greeks a lot, but Crusader give you great rank and file models and match up perfectly to Foundry and Gorgon.

The Aventine spears were the best hoplite spears I could find, short of raiding the plastic ones from the Victrix sprues (but that would leave the latter weaponless). The cast metal is also sufficiently firm that bendy spears are rarely a problem. I did trim the flanges of sarouter end as they were a bit too wide for my taste.
