Good start.
Wha scale are you going for?
-
Scale is easily adjusted but the detail is made for 28mm
-
Careful now, '28mm scale' is a hotly contested field these days ;)
Looking forward to seeing this released, no matter the scale. It's looking to be a cracking sculpt.
-
Thats why I'm being vague :)
Beauty of 3d prints is that, within reason, scale can be adjusted. Obviously if its adjusted too far up or down either the details become too tiny and fragile if scaled down or the result lacks detail when scaled up.
Its drawn to be printed between 1/100 and 1/35 outside that range it'll be obvious.
-
Tracks are done.
Turret is a blobby nightmare...
-
This turret has taken most of the day.... >:(
-
Nice simple symmetrical turret - NOT
-
You too? Seems to be the year of the M-48. Strictly speaking, with that 105mm gun you've shown it's an M-48A5 not an A3.
-
Good spot. I need to finds a drawing of an A3.
-
Well the George Bradford book appears to only have the A1 and A5.
NVG31 has a line drawing of an M48 with a natty four drum fuel rack (page 47) and a cutaway of an A3 (plate D).
Probably not much help, sorry.
Nice work by the way.
-
I've got a drawing I jsut need to find it in the archive...
Only real difference (that I can tell) is the gun barrel and muzzle brake.
This will be getting the mini-turret and extension piece for Vietnam.
-
Cool! Now while you are at it and Vietnam inspired:
http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/coldwar/US/amphibious-cargo-carrier-m76-otter/
The combination of wide tracks and almost Sno-catty weirdness makes me think this would be a dream build for you Rich.
Then there’s this:
https://olive-drab.com/idphoto/id_photos_m116_husky.php
Of course I suspect that once the penny drops that the M-48 shares much of the suspension and tracks with it’s Goliath half-brother, the M-103, you just won’t be able to resist. :D
-
Interesting additions... will take a look thanks!
-
Cant find a husky drawing but got an otter:
-
Cool projects? Will they be commercially available?
-
The M48 will be as it's a commission.
The rest will be on spec see if they want more.
List is currently:
Ontos
Sheridan
Gage Commando
Now Adding:
Otter
But there is a lon glist of other things too...
-
Oh nice, I might pm you and finally order some of these excellent models! :D lol
Thanks for the heads up!
-
Oooh, a Cadillac Gage Commando. That brings back memories of The Morrow Proect.
-
Nobody ever seems to remember, or care for my favourite ‘toy’ jeep, the USMC’s very own M-422 Mighty Mite. Cute in a sort of anime way but saw a bit of service.

That is cute.
-
Very cute :)
On the topic of other vehicles, specifically jeeps, I'm wondering how much difference there is between the old WW2 era jeeps and the Vietnam war era jeeps?
From pictures it seems that the main difference was the grille being vertical instead of horizontal slots.
-
Pretty sure the later jeeps were signifiacntly larger too.
Bit of progress last night but the ankle biter decided that sleeping was boring and he'd much rather scream.
By the way the top cupola is almost as bad as the main turret....
-
How technical do you want to get? Suffice it to say that the M-151 MUTT was a completely different vehicle with almost nothing in common with a WW2 era Willys MB / Ford GPW jeep, structurally or motor mechanically.
MUTTs weren’t the only jeeps in service in Vietnam. There were still substantial holdings of M-38A1 s, the successor to the M-38, itself the successor to the WW2 era Willys MB/ Ford GPW. The only 28mm sized ones I know of is the 1/48 version that comes with the Monogram/Revell CH-53 kit. You also get a 105mm howitzer but I doubt you’ll want to shell out big bucks for a two foot long helicopter.
There are a number of 1/64 diecast CJ-5 models out there, the M-38A1 essentially being the military version. They are rather on the small side though.
-

I had looked at http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=114631.msg1450143#msg1450143 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=114631.msg1450143#msg1450143) many times but not noticed the horizontal grill.
There is a tendency to consider a jeep is a jeep is a jeep (except when it is a gitpanzer), as Carlos rightly points out that is not the case
-
So Gringos is the only reasonably priced M151, but M38s werent completely fased out?
-
Corrected the title... damn American naming conventions...
So the MUTT is covered, what else is missing from the Vietnam range in 28mm?
-
How about the Dodge M37? It was also converted into gun trucks:
-
What else is missing? Quite a lot but how much is desired is another thing.
The M-37 is a good choice, although it will irritate me slightly having gone to the trouble of cutting up a perfectly good 1/50 Dodge WC just to make one. Its replacement, the M-715 would give you a distinctive looking model but limited to the latter half of the war.
The ten ton M-54 is the most obvious softskin missing. It looks like the M-35 series but it’s bigger. The M-54 was actually the basis for most of the gun trucks.
For the USMC, the LVT series: LVTP-5 LVTE-6 and the LVTH-6. It’s surprising to read of the frequency with which they appear in USMC operations not just shore landings.
Armour? The US Army fielded a number of the cute but rather impractical M-56 Scorpion SPAT guns. It has essentially the same running gear as that Otter. It’s former Cold War board moderator Arlequin’s favourite vehicle.
For later war an M-551 Sheridan is required. They replaced M-48s and occasionally M-113 in various armoured cavalry units and were the second principle tank used by the US Army in Vietnam. They are available on Shapeways and Company B did a 1/56 version IIRC. Think that one is OOP though.
If you fancied using the M-48 chassis for other things then there’s the M-88 ARV and a bridge layer would be pretty cool. The Marines, being the Marines had their own ARV, the M-51, based on the M-103 chassis. That would definitely pander to any desire to make something big. They were massive items.
Plenty of other stuff but I’m already in silly/ fantasy territory.
-
There is the M41 Walker Bulldog, in use with ARVN plus the M42 Duster.
Due to losses, M48A2s were used due to shortages of t diesel A3s.
-
Thanks chaps - lots to think about!
In the meantime:
-
Wow the LVTP is one ugly lump! :o
I think to give me a break from curved things the Otter will be next.
It appears to have been designed by a child with a ruler. :-*
-

Admit it, you just want one for your Arctic madness. ;) It would look cool in DayGlo orange. Beware of complacency though, there’s a serious curve in the bow section.
The LVTP would also be a seriously heavy item in 1/50. We also know you would spend hours fretting about how to make the front ramp a working item. Of course, making it hollow would seriously ease the strain on shelves. Of course everything looks better with a fucking huge mine plow on the front. :D
-
The otter is pretty simple 2D curves ;) But I'll find out!
-
Of course everything looks better with a fucking huge mine plow on the front. :D
Good grief!
If you put the back of that in your deployment zone, the plough will be in your opponent's!
-
That is an ugly beast and not improved by the plough!
-
Cupola nearly done.
-
Any chance of disclosing who you're sculpting these for?
Also, it'd be great to see the Urdan Cupola as used on the Israeli Magach series while you're working on the M48 :)
-
Rich, whilst you are at it, you might as well do the M-67 Zippo flamethrower version. There are just a few minor tweaks. Shorten the barrel/ flame tube a bit. Flatten the brush guards slightly for the front lghts and somewhere (I’ve never been able to make out exactly where) there’s some sort of filler cap in the turret under hang for the flame tank. Make the brush guards and barrel/ flame tube separate items and it’s essentially two kits for the price of one.
-
Sorry Splod - sworn to secrecy. Urban cupola shouldn't be too hard.
Yep, Zippo is on the list, need to look for some details.
-
Looking good! The two semi-spheres on the turret sides should have little apertures on the front face. These are the coincidence range finders for the main gun.
The track pads aren’t right for this model of the M-48. The T97 track has pronounced metal chevrons on the track pads.
Thusly:
-
Thanks - I wasn't sure which one to use. I'll keep these and make a new version - it's actually pretty easy to change the tracks as they are all clones - change one and it changes all. Note the links are actually made of 5 parts. I didn't model the track pins though...
Yep turret is very much still WIP, lots of detail still to add.
Handrails were last night. Turret basket is going to be 'interesting' to say the least.
-
Impressive work.
-
First print of the tracks.
Couple of mistakes but generally good.
-
Nice.
Having just watched Full Metal Jacket, the request for an M41 (with dress up) just got bumped.
-
Fantastic work. I'm really looking forward to hearing how we can get our hands on them :)
-
Having problems printing the damn things properly now...
-
Looking good!
-
Nice
-
Having problems printing the damn things properly now...
A watched printer never prints, and we are watching oh so much....
-
Any idea on release dates for this?
-
It's been printing over night so not been watching honest! It's a lack of support or faield support - trying a new resin and it's being problematic (but it does give amazingly sharp results)
No release date yet, I've not even finished drawing the hull yet...
-
Any sign of Hot Tubs in this one?
-
Mark,
Is there any chance of doing spare track links - nearly every photo of M48s in combat I've seen had several track runs hanging from their turrets?
Looking great so far - will definitely be getting one (or two!) to go with my Empress Marines.
-
Not sure if Mark can help... But I can probably manage a few spare links lol
-

Top man Mark! ;)

There is a whole pile of tat that would be useful (matching scale Jerry cans, ammo boxes etc).
-

Track links would be good. Most other impedimentia can be readily found in either 1/56 or 1/48 versions. I think I have enough Tamiya jerry cans to last me a lifetime. The one thing that might be worth doing as extra kit are the Mermite hot and cold food canisters. These are frequently seen in photos of tanks, strapped to the turret basket, sometimes in the canister or just the individual containers alone.
-
Sometimes it takes a few goes to get right...
Bottom one is finally perfect!

Is that the left one or the right one (my vote is on left).
@Carlos - I just got a Tamiya 1/48 scale Jerry cans set, I see what you mean.
-
I dunno, I quite like the idea of the Haribo tank. Looks good on the table and it’s a rewarding snack as well.
:D
-
damn phone... It's the on on the right!!
Printing the other side now... 8 hours a go.
Almost finished the rest too, just turret details still to go
-
Heavy stuff! Looks great! :o
-
Well, it definitely looks like the source material!
Looking forward to seeing it transition further to a physical model :)
-
Could be the angle of the image or maybe it’s just me but the turret looks a little flat and lower than it should.
-
It's correct to the drawings I've got (No guarantees they are right of course): Fusion draws things without perspective which makes things look weird.
-
That is back to the one with the 105mm gun ^__^.
[Edit] It is the one with the 90 and 105mm guns ^__^.
I see what Carlos meant about the Haribo version (as opposed to the Kendal Mint Cake version).
-

I wondered if anyone would spot the gun...
They are components within the drawing. I can add or remove them with a click. I just grabbed the barrels to print as they don't take up much room and forgot to turn one off again!
You'd not want to eat these versions...
-
Finally got a pair of tracks I can work with...
Next up - the Hull!
I've printed it once, printed almost perfectly firat time - but I've had ot make changes to the model to beef up areas, I'll also print it the other way up. Problem is the fine vent slats at the rear are easily damaged then removeing supports so I'll print it the other way up.
That said - seeing as I already have a hull I might print a turret... so I can at least see the whole hting in one piece!
-
Looking forward to seeing it.
-
Me too!

Nice.
-
Getting there. Looks like the cupola .50 cal could do with metal or resin replacement though.
Now, just in case you were minded to do a Mighty Mite, here’s a useful reference, complete with plans.
http://www.vintagemilitarytrucks.com/M422%20Mighty%20Mite%20Page.htm
Here’s a picture of Walter Cronkite at Huế featuring one.
-
Very nice
-
The mantlet could stand some further work. Firstly to give it fabric like texture on the cover and secondly and more importantly, to give it that distinctive, concertina like, look. Beyond that, it's shaping up well.
-
Barrel and handrails will be replaced in wire, might upscale them a little too.
-
New hull looks to have printed fine.
Popped it off the bed and hit print again (need 2)
Will get a better look at it later.
-
Looking good!!!
-
Would love to crew this up one day
-
Would love to crew this up one day
Would that include tank riders?
Rats, I was looking for the M48A3 at Hue photograph that is on one of the recent threads.
-
I call this progress
-
Oh, also nice to see different types of resin or printing material, didn't know there was clear one, like on the uppermost turret.
-
The transparent is a pain in the arse!! It tends to bleed uv through so needs lots of clean up! It also goes very yellow very quickly. I was hoping to print clear bits but it's useless.
The grey and white are painted trace costs so I can see defects
-
They look good.
How do you feel about them?
-
The grey one is almost right lol
-
Oh glad to hear! And surprising on the clear stuff!
-
To be fair it's 'natural' resin as in without pigment. It's not really ever going to be clear. It's clear for about 10mins and apparently can be clear coated to stop the yellow but I'll just use something else for Windows.
-
looking good
-
Looking good but the mantlet still needs fixing. About the only people I can think of who used a naked mantlet was the Bundeswehr on later marks of the M-48A2G2.
I had a look at redoing the mantlet on a plastic 1/48 Revell/Monogram M-48A2 and I reckon old school green stuff is probably the best way to get that squeeze box look where the mantlet cover meets the turret. With CAD and a printer, I’m sure there’s a better way.
-
Green stuff is the plan. Using the program I have it'll look too regular and sharp. There is a gap left for the green stuff so it stays put.
I don't have to produce everything in CAD as it's a casting master.
-
Thanks Carlos, I now have that Pete Townsend song on repeat, so I will never sleep at night....

Wot? Pinball Wizard?

Broke a bit off the decent hull.... so it's back on the printer. But this time I've activated the Anti-Aliasing firmware. This basically means instead of the LCD pixels being on or off it now prints in greyscale. It's supposed to smooth out the lines even further. I tried it on the cupola and it has made some difference on the double curves so it will be interesting to see what it does to the hull.
-
But surely anti-aliasing software means you can’t pass it off as an early M-60 or call it ‘Sid’, ‘Deep Throat’ or ‘The Notorious BIG’?
I think anything that allows for greyscale should be called ‘Visage’ in honour of Steve Strange.
-
Looks more like a Tiger II
(https://pics.imcdb.org/0is174/tankbfgt1.9564.jpg)
-
I must see if I still have the photos but someone at Little Wars in Melbourne did an absolutely brilliant Battle of the Bulge game using 1/87 Roco/Roskopf M-47s. It was all set on a very Hollywood back lot table. Sheer genius it was.
-
love it :D

-
Good man! I couldn’t find ‘em. Hilarious set up. If you look up in the right hand corner there’s even a red Bell helicopter doing the filming/ directing the shoot.
-
Just something I’ve noticed. I’ve been scouring books and the net for photos of M48A3s to correct some issues with a model version.
None of the photos shows any X style bracing on the foremost part of the front fenders. Those that have a reinforcement show a rib running from the hull across the fender.
On the other hand that X style reinforcement shows up on the front and rear fenders of M48A5s. I suspect it’s a modification made when the M48A5 conversions were made.
Here’s what I mean. M48A3 top, M48A5 bottom.
-
Now with big torch
-
Very good.
-
Amazing!
-
Still chipping away at this...
Not happy with the turret still: I've now added the canvas cover clips to the turret face and reprinted the turret at double resolution (went from 2 hours to 5 hours...) just waiting for it to cure in the sun (ha - I'm in Lancashire) then I can hit it with undercoat and get a proper look at it.
I'm going to be sending the prototypes off to empress for their opinion soon to ensure I've not made any major cockups... then I can print the final final final version... :o
-
Exciting stuff :o :o :o :o :o
-
Odd, I’ve always thought of Lancashire as being an exotic locale. Now you’re telling us it’s nor replete with a sunny clime and palm trees swaying gently in the tropical breeze?
Judging by the temperatures in France this week, just give it a few years. Blackpool, the Acapulco of the North.*
Looking forward to seeing the completed product.
* Lower body count of course.
-
New turret is printed and, aside from a touch of Z wobble (I really need to fix that...) it's awesome. There are viretually no lines at all and those that are visible are vertical not horizontal. Basically the vertical resolution (0.02mm) is better than the horizontal (0.047mm). But the undercoat has seen them off. A touch of sanding on the Z-wobble lines and it's looking good. The onyl bit that needs work is the turret edge as it's come out a bit soft - but that is easily fixed with miliput.
Going to send the prototype off to Empress for assessment for casting this week.
-
Excellent.
-
that sounds very good
-
Bitten the bullet adn ordered a £100 upgrade to fix the z-wobble.
I could try to adjust it out but it will come back, this will eliminate it - plus it's a really solid looking bit of engineering. (And shiney)
-
I have no idea how you are making this model but I can't wait to see the end result and get my hands on one (or maybe two). Keep at it!
-

It is magic, I tell you....
-
The sort of magic that takes practice, frustrations, tears and hard work... >:(
-
that looks promising
-
Going to thicken up the turret basket rails they are currently 0.8mm going to up that to 1mm to make it easier to cast.
But yes at first look it looks good.
-
Looking good.... what scale will it be?
-
Thanks!
1/50 to match the other Empress vehicles

I'd forgotten how much of a pain the tracks are... got several failures on the back of the roadwheels... not really visible but not good enough - adjusted the model and tried again... 9 hours 30 mins to print...
-
Great work :-* :-* :-*
Can I ask how many hours do you spend doing the CAD work before your 3D printing?
-
A lot ;) I'm still learning as I go, every now and then I have to stop and go lean a new bit...
This beast is a nasty combination of double curves and an asymmetric cast turret so has taken a long time to get right. Something like the Gage Commando is far more straight forward as it's mostly flat plates.
The detail takes as long as the basics too: I use a combination of drawings (not always reliable), historical photos (Not always possible to tell if it's the right model) and museum walk around photos (sometimes modified or cobbled together). Even then I don't always get it right first time (This one had the wrong mudguards, air filter boxes and tracks initially)

Congratulations!
My wife ,Annette is the best thing that ever happened to me,and she puts up with my weird hobbies: toy soldiers, classic cars(two),guitars, collecting binoculars, photography, ferns, and the list goes on. It's books that got us together :)
-
Oh yes, books are a must. We have walls of books and have even read most of them.
But yeah no regrets, planning for the future with my best friend.
-
Congrats!
In other news... the seocnd track printed over night; on initial check it looks good
Next up turret.
Turret basket has been beefed up (I'd not realised but the basket rails as printed was 0.5mm thick but still printed just fine!) I've increased them to 0.8mm for robustness. I was going for 1mm but they looked too chunky.
I still need to tweak the hull: there are a couple of areas that need reworking.
The handles on the rear deck are very flimsey and need 'connecting' solidly to the hull
The headlamp guards are not right still.
Also the mudguard connections need to be a bit more sturdy as they are easily damaged at the moment.
Hopefully get the changes made tonight and the turret on the printer overnight.
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks and cool! :D
-
Cant wait to see the M48 finished. Given your efforts I'm sure it will be well worth the wait!
-
Thanks!
Second track out - looks OK.
Turret printed overnight, looks OK at first check but might reprint as the layer lines appear quite promenant on the mantle. I'll reprint in a different orientation.
Problem is the best orientation is flat but this causes a 'softer' edge to the turret.
The problems arise when the curved surface approaches the plane of the print.
This is because, like a contour map, you get fewer contours so you get a much more noticable steps.
-
Orientation makes a difference
Remember the layers are 0.05mm so not that noticeable. This effect is because of the angle at which it was printed.
Printing again flat and at 0.02mm/layer. 9 hours...
-
Finally got somewhere... got a decent print - jsut a mantle cover to greenstuff and a minor repair to the hull and it's ready to go.
Gage commando is likewise almost ready plus another vehicle thing is close behind...
Problem I have is I can do clean stuff like the CAD work, and I can dash out to the printer and set it off/clean it up for 10-15mins at a time but I don't have much time for messy stuff (Like the greenstuff) as I'm inevitably on child minding duties.

Now with Empress for manufacture.

YES!
-
This one is a beut. :-*
-
indeed!!!!

Any chance we can see it next to some of your figures? I am really hoping that the 1/50 Corgi M48s were over scaled because they were massive compared to 28mm figures!! Lovely looking model... how long for release? ;D
-
This was a previous prototype
-
Thanks for the picture.... I'll take 3!!!!!
-
Identical size-wise with the Corgi by the look of it and just as it should be.
It’s a pretty big unit in real life.
-
Both 1:50 so should be very similar.
It's massive, deceptively so as it's (relatively) tall too. It was a right pig to print as a result!
The Ontos by comparison is tiny!
-
It’s looking brilliant
-
Excellent.
One for the USMC and one for 11 ACR.
-
Well, as Rich indicated earlier, the kit should provide for an M67 Zippo as well, so maybe you really need three. ;)
-
Not yet but it's on the list ;)

Shouldn’t a second (flame) barrel and slightly modified brush guards for the headlights do the trick? I doubt anyone is going to looking for the filler cap for the flame tank. Even the brush guards could be modified with a file. As far as I am aware there are no other obvious external differences. The raised cupola of the M48 A3 Model B was also applied and just as relevant to the M67.
Extra barrel and brush guards, potentially two tanks for the price of one. Of course, if Empress choose to market it as a second kit, it makes no difference, folk will still buy a second item for the specific variant.

Or a conversion for the Corgi beast?

It's just time and lack of good drawings. I'll do it eventually. Priority was getting the M48A3 /Commando /Ontos out the door. The only drawing I've found so far is this one:

The 11 ACR will be have two ACAVs and an M48, the USMC with M48, M50 and Mule etc. One or more V100s (those Crooked Dice General's Army chaps are looking for a ride).
I think two M48s will do ^__^.

It's done. M67 bits printed overnight. Not had a chance to check them yet
