Title: Custom pyrography illustration on Eldritch Horror board game case
Post by: Captain Harlock on May 10, 2019, 02:05:17 PM
Well I guess that this is something different from my usual topics, but I just finished it and thought to share it with you. Its a custom illustration created with the  pyrography/wood burning technique, on a wooden case for the Eldritch Horror board game (and all its expansions). The actual size of the box is about 50x30 cm. I would dare say that pyrography demands even more patience than miniature painting. Cause you simply cannot erase a mistake. Its similar to the tatoo art. Once its on, its on. So you have to proceed slowly and also deal with bad wood quality, imperfections or residues of stripped varnish.
The first time I heard of the art of pyrography was in the late 90's. I was reading a Jackson guitars catalogue and the custom shop pages featured some guitars with some pyrography artwork on. I was really fascinated. Those were the dark ages before the internet  lol, well I mean there was internet technically but it was so new that only few people (usually with interests or work around computer programming) had it and it could really blow up your telephone bill. So I went in an art shop, luckilly found a pyrographer that was better than a plain sldering iron and pretty much experimented with it till I found how it worked.

Really nice work. I had a wood burning set when I was a kid. I certainly never approached this level of mastery but it gives me an appreciation for your skills. I would love to see more.

Well it was on off, but I would guess about a month. Because there is no ''undo'' you have to build up the tones slowly, and the tools cant cover big surface anyway. The widest tip is about 4x3 milimiters so.... yes...  lol

Thanks! Actually i did this for a friend. Initially he asked just for a symbol on the box but I said "this goes up to eleven" lol

Absolutely gorgeous. How do you apply the highlights? Or is it just an optical illusion with everything else being darkened? I imagine the smell of the charring wood is lovely.

Its pretty much like pencil drawing or tatooing. The highlight is the natural color of the wood and everything else gets darkened down. I ve seen some people using colored pencils or markers, by I consider it ''cheating''.
If you are lucky and its a new poece of wood, yes the smell is very nice. My first pyrography was on the guitar of a friend. A cheep plywood Ibanez EX which we stripped down. The problem is that it had this nasty coating that had seeped into the woodgrain. The fumes were enough to feel like getting messages from the gods  lol.

Much like you’d approach a sheep - start at the back, work your way up?

Except with pyrography you probably rub the linseed oil in afterwards.

Hot damn, even the planning you must go through to get the image right is frying my brain.
