Title: Carronade 2019
Post by: Shahbahraz on May 11, 2019, 05:41:49 PM
Another show over, loads of fun. Carronade is always a great day out, and as a bonus I got to drive home in the most glorious sunshine through some beautiful parts of Scotland. Though why my satnav wanted to take me through Drum is a mystery.

Some loot, and a brief summary on my blog.

Great pics, great show.
First time I've been for a few years but made it over( despite my teeth deciding that forming an abscess over the past few days would be fun!)
Met up with a couple of old workmates and had a good chat.
very impressed with the amount of traders and games, all very eye catching and well presented.
Didn't buy too much( did pick up some Mantic skeletons and zombies from flea market) but was lots to tempt.
Looked at Claymore stand 3 or 4 times, when I decided I was giving in, 2 of the packs had sold out!!
Next time.....
Noticed that laser cut MDF has taken over as material of choice for buildings.
3D printed buildings available at cheap prices too, very impressive
Looking forward to next year :)

Sorry - can't help, I think it might have been one of the Glasgow clubs, it looked terrific, but I was whizzing around taking hurried snaps, because I was actually manning the Kirrie game.

And unfortunately, a lot of the games it was difficult to tell which club was running it. If someone lets me know, I will add additional details to the pics.

Didn’t get to stay very long but the show was excellent as usual.

The haul below.

Sherman’s for Uttar CoC or What an Uttar Tanker, Gnolls & stone thrower for Erehwon, replacement paints, and some skirmish movement trays for our Prussians for Waterloo Replayed.

Hi,
I playef in the last Hunt for the White Stag game and had a great time.  Tne game was presented by my old friends at Glasgow Phoenix Wargames club.  The club meet in Partick Borough halls, Glasgow, every Tuesday from about 7 pm to 10 pm. They play a wide assortment of rules and periods and have a Facebook page where you can find out more.
The objective of the game was for teams of three  hunters to sweep the table to find and kill game.  Teams could play either competitively or collaborativly.  In my game we all played collaboratively.
At the start of each turn each team rolled an average dice for action points.  The turn was divided into 3 phases, movement, shooting and close combat.  The turn order in each phase was in order of action points, highest to lowest, with tying players dicing off further on a d6.  One action point gave 5" movement or 3 points gave 10.  Movement was halved for moving in diffiicult terrain.
In the shooting phase one action point gave one shot with a bow or javelin with a bow having a max range of 12".  It was quite difficult to hit an animal with most needing 10 or 11 on 2d6 and the white stag needing 12.
A team could also use an action point to search a piece of difficult terrain, finding an animal on a 7 or more.  If an animal was found the umpire determined what it was by rolling on a table.
For close combat, if in contact with an animal, a team rolled 2d6 needing a 9 for a kill.  If they were unsuccessful the animal got to fight back.  We were lucky and lost no teams to animal attacks.
At the end of the turn all animals on the table moved with movement of each determined by a card draw from a standard pack of cards and reference to a table.
The game ended if the white stag appeared and was killed or after a certain number of turns determined by the umpire.  Our game ended very dramatically when the white stag appeared on the final turn.  One of the players shot at it, rolled a 12 and killed it to loud cheering from everyone else.
The game will be at the Glasgow Wargames show in June and Claymore in Edinburgh in August.  If you see it it's well worth a play.  I found it to be a very entertaining and evocative experience.

Another good show, and far too much stuff bought o_o I think I probably now own more Grendel pieces than Grendel themselves ;D

I went looking for the Northstar Tribals, but ended up buying pretty much the whole range of EMP's Pineapple Tribe instead. I'm not sure how many years I've walked past those figures and thought "they're nice, but I have no use for them". This year, the stars finally aligned...

Now only seven weeks until the Glasgow show lol

My first time there, much larger than I expected. The loot was small but perfectly formed:

The White Stag game had very nicely realised scenery and the big pirate game was very eye-catching.

Seems to be a theme emerging in the loot...  :-)   here's mine:

I don’t have much Iron Gate stuff but what I do have is very nice, well worth a bit of time.

My theme this year was graveyards and a bit of church furniture  :)

Bong67, thank you so much for the detailed report, sounds like a really interesting game and ideal to play at a show. Sadly I can’t make any Scottish shows this year but may have to make a trip soon.

I am one of the organisers and it is great to get such positive feedback.

Thanks to everyone who came and hope to see you all there next year,

Any constructive criticism would be most welcome as we are always looking to improve the show

I felt a wee bit sorry for Foundry, tucked away under the stairs Dave. Hope they don't take the hump about that. The signage was good enough to find them easily though.

Foundry have wanted to come for a few years and this was the only way we could fit them in. They will probably be back next year so hopefully it was worth their while

Hi Dave,

feedback on the show:

1. Overwhelmingly positive, it was a great day out. Most of the vendors also seemed to be doing good business.

On a 'constructive criticism view' -

1. Better signposting of the actual halls ? I kept feeling like I might have spent the whole day there and completely overlooked one hall.
2. The fleamarket format was ok, but I kept feeling like I needed to duck back every hour to see if I was missing anything. It's possibly the best format, but it still has drawbacks. Not sure there is anything you could change here though.
3. Stewards? - I've seen other shows use 'hi-viz' vests to easily let people spot helpers/stewards.
4. Could the painting exhibits be in a better lit location?
5. Finally, not sure about having the games in the entry hall, it seemed to create a lot of congestion. (But also, not sure there was an alternative location.)

My final observations - my impression was this year there were marginally fewer games at the very top level of spectacular (three or four I think) compared to previous years, and it looked to me like there were fewer people actually playing participation games.

As I said on my blog, I was pleased to see more women there, but I didn't think I saw as many kids as usual, although I wasn't able to get there till midday.

I enjoyed the show and was very impressed with the standard of games.

I did a book signing and chatted to a lot of people about my book and plans for the next books.
