Here are a few pictures of the game we setup today at the Partizan show in Newark [England] All the figures and cannons, mdf buildings were from https://victoriousminiatures.com. The city wall was made by Dave at TM terrain. We invited a few people over the day to join in the game and all seemed to have fun, another great show from the Partizan team.
Next game even more figures and a new set of rules with event cards if all goes well.
cheers

Looks good Keith :)
-
Excellent looking game.
-
Curious about the "new set of rules" since I'm working on my own Boxer Rebellion siege game - in 15 mm though. Looks good so far.
-
Awesome looking Table! Something to aspire to for sure.
-
Thanks for posting, Keith. Looks like a fun layout to play on.
-
Looks wonderful. The scenery is very nice.

Thanks for the kind words, we plan to add more buildings to the setup to make it look more like a city.
At our next Demo game we hope to have over a hundred Boxers plus some Regular Chinese troops, against British marine light infantry, "Betsy" the international gun, a Colt machine gun with American marine crew, American marines [with Charlton Heston lookalike commander] also Chinese artillery will be present.
Working on the new rules that will have a deck of random event and command cards [still in the planning phase]. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Oh, to have stopped at 100 Boxers! It is to laugh. I have a few more than that to paint, by scores of scores. At least in 15 mm!
By title, you obviously know the old Staines game so not much help from me since that's where my rules suggestions would point. In the film, the raid on the supply dump/ammo dump was not a real event, just catering to an actor's ego. But that shouldn't stop you from making a side game of the event.
-
Interesting, you saying one of the actors demanded that scene in the flick?
And to stay on topic too - the scenery in this thread is really top notch.
-
Keith, some inspiration may be found in the random event cards produced by TVAG - The Virtual Armchair General made for The Sword And The Flame rules set. I faithfully use these rules and the various supplements for all my colonial gaming.
Cheers,
JB

If memory serves, it was David Niven whose character based on McDonald didn't have much to do in the film wanted something more so the director obliged.
I really need to get myself a DVD of that movie! My old VHS version is still around but not a player anymore.

Great terrain and scenics !
Who does the copplestone mat ?
-
The whole set-up looks great. If filling the open spaces with more buildings seems overwhelming, an easy solution is to add lots of rubble and burnt out buildings - easier to produce and much easier on the pocketbook, and true to life as well! Looking forward to seeing more!

"copplestone" < do we have here a Freudian slip or an autocorrect oops!? lol Or were you asking about cobblestone mats?

sorry my taping was too fast and mindless this morning.... lol lol lol
Cobblestone of course :D

The cobblestone mat is from Cigar box mat's, a cheep and easy way to add roads etc
I plan to add another two feet of wall [Dave at TM terrain] so a total of 6 feet, canal in the center, battle area about 3 feet wide [6 feet long] and Chinese able to attack from both directions.
Looking to add a deck of action cards to the rules and some event cards, want to avoid the Boxers being able to coordinate their attacks and make the legation defend all possible points of entry .
Not trying to do an exact refight but more a playable game, very few photos of the city at this time that I have found but will add more buildings[ good idea yes some burned out ones as well].Also need to paint up around 50 more Boxers.
The American marines are being cast as I type.
Watch out for more over the next couple of months.

An interesting alternative scenario would be to set the scene during the First Sino Jap war where the Japanese took Pingyao,so Japanese versus Chinese regulars and militia

Looking again today and saw you did the water gate as an appropriately low gate.
Like that the canal is not blue, though I plan to go with a more green color befitting the canal's nick name at the time as the Jade River - all that algae in stagnant water I'm guessing. And I plan to add a little 'comic relief' in the river, too, but what it will be is a big secret for now. Shhh! lol
Also, still on the canal, I plan to have a few variable length sections of the canal to deal with the issue with table length to get the canal as near the end of the table as possible. Also, plan to add very low walls to either side, some in heavily damage state. An ever present convention challenge - we carefully prepare our setup ahead of time and then get tables that don't quite fit our well laid plans.
