A look at the build so far courtesy of Purple Lion Creations the citadel was the first completed element, followed by a typical low status house. A Pagoda is currently under construction
-
Those are great - I particularly like the window gridwork. Are those lasercut pieces?
-
Yes Laser cut MDF as are the door ornamentations on the Pagoda
-
Are those personal commissions or available to the public? I went to their site and did not see them for sale. They did have a Siamese temple but that had no sale price either.
-
they are personal commissions, the Siamese one was also done for me as a gift to a friend.
-
Thanks, they are certainly very impressive!
-
WoW, love the buildings.
Very well done.
-
Looking forward to the next builds!
Lon
-
Great looking buildings.
Mark
-
they look splendid Geoff! :D

The next in the prospective build will be a shop, here is the completed Pagoda along side the village house
-
Superb!
-
Very cool, can we see a few more shots of that fort?
-
A few other shots of the citadel
-
Oooo forgot too include the Observation tower
-
Very cool!
-
A little shop/store building under construction
-
Wow! Fabulous work! :-*
-
Damn fine!
Lon
-
The finished shop/store
-
Very nice.
Mark
-
Nice!
-
Bugger me, these look fantabulous.
-
Just a brief update, work has finally started on the next build, sometimes ones ideas when the basic shapes are cut you stand back and think Nahh that does not work, after much drawing and extended calls with Geoff , we both have got to a point where we are happy with the basic dimensions and cutting has begun.......I will keep you guys updated
-
Love the new addition.
Well done.
-
Looking forward (jealously) to your next build.
Lon
-
These buildings are impressive
very well done
-
Just to give you a taster....
-
Very nice work!! ;)
-
Another play around
-
I am very interested in seeing your method of doing the row of shops. Thanks.
I have always wanted to make some myself for Singapore or other Asian settings.
-
Dan, these are being built for me by Geoff of Purple Lion Creations here in UK

Oh sorry meant to say "the method" rather than yours. ::) the pictures you have posted are enough of a hint, thanks.
-
Rows of shops or three storey buildings are more difficult to plan and to get the proportions right, especially Chinese structures
-
Just so you guys can see the progress being made. The next update will be when there is a finished model.......!
-
Just great builds. Beautiful.
Now, for "filler" shop/tenement street rows, I found a couple systems to crank out good looking stuff quick and easy.
Ill find my massive Peking stuff pics and post said (hurricane "Whatever/Postponed Hurricanes vs CrimiNoles game storm?" in Sept. 2016 made me box and secure whole project when 99% done) Probably should give the 50+ buildings and @500 painted, based figs to someone who promises to use 'em? Anyone do 15mm?
-
Trying to find accessories to enhance the project especially interiors is quite difficult, I have been liaising with a contact in USA and now eagerly await the arrival of some 3D Chinese furniture.
I preview it here and when it arrives hopefully it will fit in scale wise, and I will be able to show it next to a Gringos40 or Steve Barber Models figure!
-
Are the files available for the furniture? I have some Vietnam buildings I would like to enhance.
-
They were drawn for me and printed in the USA, I am getting a trial set to check true scale, I am assured they are 28mm . I am hoping they will arrive by next week.
-
Interesting :-*
-
Here is the the latest finished building
-
Damn! That's nice! You are one lucky fellow!!
Lon
-
Spectacular!
-
Just to advise you guys the next build has just started, here is an initial taster, as with most of the builds it may adapt over time
-
Excellent, is there any further news on the furniture. I could really use an ox yoke chair or two.
Lon
-
Outstanding! That is a great model, indeed!
-
With everyone's mind on the world crisis, I thought some hobby related light relief maybe in order....work is continuing on the Provincial Governors home. Geoff Lacey is under the Emperor's direction and labouring away!
-
Nice!
-
Fantastic stuff - please do keep posting!
-
superb ! Awsome. A great job you should post all the time . A great inspiration!
-
Geoff has just loosely placed some roof bits
-
Very inspiring thread. Awesome.
-
Your buildings are lovely, I'm following this thread with interest.
-
Another masterwork in the making :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
beautiful, just beautiful.
-
Awesome work, I could see some of these be useful in Hue 1968 ;)
-
Geoff is working on the rear, inspiration was taken from an actual Chinese dwelling but rather than stone/brick we are treating it like wood
-
Texture starting to be applied
-
Nice!
-
Currently at the messy stage lol, still a way to go ...!
-
Wow ,you are a Master at this.
-
Some really nice pieces here, wonderful execution. Think I may be pinching some of these ideas for myself.
-
Almost there, undercoat done, balcony fixed, door to be fitted, and everything highlighted and weathered
-
Drool, drool, drool.
Love this stuff soooooo much.
-
Beautiful artwork
-
The finished house courtesy of Geoff Lacey
-
:-* I cant wait to see these on your table. What comes next?
-
Just a few shots with a figure for scale
-
Projects coming along nicely.
-
The next house will be a flat roofed dwelling belonging to the local Camel Merchant it will be loosely based on an actual house in Northern China
-
Wonderful construction and finish. 8)
-
Wow!
These are beautiful buildings.
If I didn’t have enough projects on the go, I’d be so tempted to try and copy one....but I wouldn't get close!
Great project.
-
Great building :-* :-* :-*
Where do you get your inspiration?

Yes I most definitely agree, as in I too have far too many things on the go at present,
but would love to try & copy what you have achieved.
-
Just catching up on this thread, fantastic work. What do use for the texture on the foamcore? Looks like some sort of modelling paste or Milliput?
-
To answer the last question first , clay is the medium over the foam core
With regards to inspiration countless internet searches books on Chinese buildings regional architecture . Sometimes an actual representation is better taken apart and recombining the component elements
-
In order to follow the ideas of the build and thought process, the first stage is to work on the layout of the structure
-
The next step is giving some form to the idea
-
Your work is amazing..
-
It is Geoff Lacys work for my collection...he and I work together on formulating the concept specific individual design features then Geoff works his magic!
-
It is easy to get a building to one stage, then to take the next step only to find the image you had in mind or were working too just does not work as a model , this is where the ability to think outside the box comes into play
-
Well Geoff has now got the form right detailing and texturing to come
-
vary interesting shape :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Based but adapted from a Chinese building In North West Shanxi
-
Interesting. This is really top class model making.
How do the walls get the flare at the base?
-
Don't ask me lol you need to ask The Emperor's Architect
-
Don't ask me lol you need to ask The Emperor's Architect
Or you could ask him please?
-
A friend of mine used cork wall tiles, which do have a degree
of flexibility. Held in place with pins &/or tape until the wood glue sets.
-
Not much to report roof lines looked at adjusted several times ridge line detailing to go on, then Geoff starts the fine detailing. When Geoff and I discuss a building, the final building is a product of organic growth , pruning, re grafting and adaption....to clarify the final creation may not always be from where we started!
-
Awesome building :-* :-* :-*
-
Clay going on a quick snap shot of the studio
-
I would love to know how you get the curved (up & down) capping on the walls.
It looks so cool.
-
Draw a cloud shape template cut with very sharp craft knive , the foam core!
-
Thank you, I will have to give that a try.
-
Here is The Camel Merchants house, based on an actual house in Shanxi province
-
Thats a great addition to a fantastic set of buildings. Brilliant stuff 8)
-
Stunning job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Absolutely wonderful. Love it
-
Really effective as a group.
-
First class job! 8)
-
I;m jealous...
-
The next build will be one of the missions in T, ai Yuan .
-
Now this thread, I HAVE to follow. Absolutely beautiful work so far! :-*
-
Well the initial research has been done, ideas formed for the mission buildings, so now mock ups start to see if the concept ideas will work!
-
Just artwork :-* :o :-* :o
-
Geoff and I don't usually work from drawings ,the concepts are taken from actual buildings and then lengthy discussions on how we can adapt to end up with an actual idea that can be made up in scrap to ensure sizes, shapes .work !
The biggest lesson I have learnt some buildings just don't scale down well to keep the integrity on the tabletop
Always be prepared to adapt and adjust as you build........and don't be afraid to admit an idea just doesn't work!
-
Truly astonishing! :o :o :o Thanks for sharing.
-
Oh my God! First time coming across this thread. What a find!
Dan
-
Glad you like it
Durando / shipka
-
Gorgeous work!
-
Geoff L and I are playing around with an idea of sections of a ruined Central Asian city or fortress walling, thought you would like to follow concept ideas, these are at embryonic stage
-
Some very nice shapes there :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Looking forward to seeing where you go with this
-
This is a plan that I have on the back burner. I will be very interested how your walls turn out.
-
Keep up the good work.
-
Current update Geoff and I are playing with some extra ideas
-
Such an amazing thread. I for one would be delighted to know how the Central Asian fortress turned out.
-
I can't have enough of it !!! I love this project! :o
-
I don't know if you are aware but Geoff Coe (Shipka) passed away,In July I believe.

I didn't, sad news.
-
I just saw it not too long ago.It was on Steve Barber's commission a miniature page. He was a plus for the hobby.

I really don't know how I missed this thread. I'm at a total loss for words. It's gorgeous work!!! The painting is AMAZING but what's really amazing is it's all scratchbuilt. :o :o :-*
You really should be making masters of stuff like that for resin casting, so the rest of us can have nice buildings like that. :D
-
I don't know if you are aware but Geoff Coe (Shipka) passed away,In July I believe.
Now that is incredibly sad. What club was he with?
-
Damn just discovered this thread. Great work on those buildings.
-
Outstanding talent in these works!!! They look beautiful, well done!
-
Very impressive stuff!
-
Just found this thread, and its amazing!
If I may ask, what are the roof tiles made of (maybe its somwhere written, but I havent read all the text)? Im scratchbuilding medieval japanese buildings for Bushido, and Im a little stuck with effective making of roof tiles...
-
Hello,
Sad that Shipka has passed away. For applying the Das clay to the foamboard do you aply first PVA glue on the foamboard? Or as i saw on youtube where someone mixed the glue in the clay? The biggest problem is also finding windows and doors in mdf.
Thanks for Any advise.

Thanks,
They don’t have, but i know them well, and he maybe can do it, in the past i already asked for customised stuff wich he did. I’ll see.

If he does, I (& I'm sure lots of others) would be interested. :)
-
Does anyone can tell me what is used for the edges and ridges?
-
First attempt with Das airclay, not quit as good as shipka! Still much to learn!
-
Does anyone can tell me what is used for the edges and ridges?
Would guess cartonboard or foamex.
Great build by the way.
-
Cardboard indeed, thanks
-
Very commendable effort Rommel! :-* :-* I love that this great thread continues.
-
A little very simple pagode.
-
Look very good. Hope to see them painted.
Mark
-

Thanks. To be honest, it could be better, but I don’t have enough time and don’t take the time and when I start I already want it to be finished, that’s the problem!

Don't be hard on yourself.
My wife knows that I start every project with great enthusiasm, and also end it like that too...
the problem for me is the bit in-between. I am a real grouch if that bit isn't very short. :D
By the way how have you done the pieced/lattice windows? They add to the Oriental look of the buildings.
-
For those who are interested , Chinese style windows/doors contact “Charlie Foxtrot Models” . Check also his Facebook page, incredible building stuff he does. I contacted him thru chat on his page, very kind and good service.
-
Love what you have done Rommel and thanks for the info on Charlie Foxtrot Models! I used one of his gates for my formal Chinese house. It is the gate in the right foreground on this pic.

Smal colonial house/trading post for Tonkin.
-
I didn’t know where to post it, some simple scratch ‘Black Flag’ Tonkin sampans with some nice Gringo40’s.
-
That is some beautiful work on those houses. The sampans are a great build too.
-
Painted versions
-
Finished sampan
-
Lovely work.
