Like I need a new project…
So I’ve got permission from High Command to go to the Bolt Action Welsh Open in September and due to the presence of a 7 month old parasite and about 10 other unfinished projects I’m not going to have much time to paint up my intended force: Last Levy Germans in Berlin. They have been sat languishing for over a year now…
So I’ve decided with it being 75 years since D-Day my 47 Commando D-Day force will get an outing instead. Mostly as they are hard as nails, good fun to play and, crucially, already fully painted.
Now the BAWO format has a pairs tank war game at the start to break the ice… and my 47 Cdo have no vehicles at all.
So the plan:
Royal Marine Armour Support Groups consisted of troops with a Sherman V Observation Post and a pair of Centaurs (95mm howitzers). The ones with the graduated marks around the turrets.
A vet Sherman (I’ve already got but will get a repaint) plus 2 Vet Centaurs would fill the points nicely and be a perfect match. They also towed porpoise sleds – easy and thematic too.
Bloody rubbish in game but that’s not the point…Easy so far.
The mad bit: Given the propensity for display boards… I was thinking a 1/56 scale LCT(A)
It’s a Mk5 LCT with some armour slapped on it plus a big wooden ramp so the Centaurs could fire over the bow ramp.
The Mk5 is one of the smaller versions and comes out at roughly 640x175mm
Using laser cut MDF for the structure and some 3d printed details it shouldn’t be *That* hard…
Seeing as the best value for the Centaurs is the pack of 3 Cromwells form Warlord I might maek a Centaur Dozer or ARV too...
-
Sounds like a suitably mental plan :D
Have you decided which battery of the RMASG they'll be from as all I can remember is that the 1st regiment landed on Gold, but not if either of the batterys was specific to Jig, which I think is where 47 commando landed.
-
According to here:
http://www.6juin1944.com/assaut/gold/en_page.php?page=69landing
It looks like 47 Commando landed on King Red and King Green but I'm not sure what they abbrviations actually mean in detail.
RMASG landed on King Red and King Green - not sure which battery/troop to choose, I've only just started to look.
-
I can't see a reference to 47 in there, where's it at, I could only find the T commando listing.
-
On 6th June 47 Commando headed for Port En Bessin, their primary DDay objective. However, their LCAs were attacked on the run in losing at least five and around eighty casualties so they came up short. They assaulted Port-En-Bessin on 7th June. 👍
-
Are they part of T Commando? There are a lot of them. Plus no reference to 47 Cdo anywhere else. No other commandos listed as landing on Gold either.
-
TBH it doesn't really matter as the Commandos landed in LCAs not LST(A)s but mine will all be crammed into the LCT(A) with a pair of Centaurs adn a Sherman.
-
Deffo landed on Gold about two hours plus of H Hour if I remember?
If you take a more generic view then looking at the attacks on either flank of Sword beach For example , Commando units linked up with AVREs for the assaults on the strongpoints at either end.
Contrary to wargames definitions, on D Day the majority of Commando units struggled against dug in defenders so reckon those RMASG attachments will come in handy. 🤔👍
-
Nothing to add here!
Cool project, looking forward to seeing it unroll.
-
Got my plans printed out now. It's pretty big but not too unweildy. plans make it slightly shorter at around 600mm whne scaled to 175mm wide. Will double check though but provided it's in proportion then it'll be fine.
-
Looking forward to seeing this develop.
Checked my books ..... 47 landed at Jig Green at 09.50 Hrs. 14 LCA , lost 5 destroyed on the run in and another 5 badly damaged.

Interesting that contradicts the site above, I wonder if the plans changed or if they drifted off?
I'm tempted now to have the LCT 'escorted' by a pair of LCAs for the infantry... dammit. lol
-
This sounds like a very juicy project :-)
Looking forward to seeing progress.
-
Crumbs!
-
So not if but when you get carried away how much of a fishing port are you going to build? There's no real challenge for you without it ;)
-

More jsut a huge pile of sand and real water.
I do haev a 1/56 Crab with a working powered flail. Just need osme 1/56 mines to clear
-
Caps dear boy Caps!
You must remember them explosives for toddlers! lol
-
Printed the plans out yesterday and it's not too big.
It's also quite a simple beast, a 10mm thick deck (very little freeboard) with a raised bridge and bow. The sides are simple steel sheet.
Plan is to use 10mm foamboard to block the hull then skin in cornflake packet. I was originally going to laser cut it all but it's so simple it's not worth the effort!
I'll laser engrave/cut the deckplates form 2mm MDF to get the detail and provide strength. I'll also laser cut the wheelhouse. I'm also going to 3d print the fittings where needed. I'll haev to track down a pair of suitable 20mm cannons - Polstens I guess?
-
Rubicon do Polstens in 1/56.
-
Clocked them. Might be useful.
Suspect they should be oerlikons though.
-
I like how you list a million unfinished things and yet plump for this idea - "It's already painted!" he says.. apart from all the stuff that's unpainted...
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTT!! lol
-
Shush you :P
-
Just spend an hour shaving off the applique armour on a Warlord Sherman V and I've had to nick the turret off the older M4 kit to get the right mantle...
This is Fox of F Troop with the Centaurs in the background.
I'm going for H troop: The Centaurs were Hood, Hound and Hunter and the Sherman was Hussar.
I'm going to have to make the 95mm barrels and blank over the MG port on the Croms.
-
Like I need a new project…
LOL Rich! :D I say that to myself almost daily. It never works.
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this.

So should I mention the Rubicon Sherman V?
Though only WIP so far...
-
Obvs... lol
The Warlord one is OK, not amazing but passable. Rubicon would be better but this will do for now.
The mantlet isn't right so I'll attack it with a file.
-
So I started with a plan to do the RMASG for a fun pairs game for the Botl Action Welsh Open.
I had a Sherman M4 painted as ‘Fox’ already so just needed a pair of Centaurs.
The plan so far is:
Build a LCT(A)
Build 2 Centaurs and a new Sherman V (M4 is the wrong hull but has the wrong turret)
Add Wading kits to them
Build Porpoise sleds for them
Build LCAs for the infantry
Commission crews for the above
Things do get out of hand rapidly…
-
The Warlord one is OK, not amazing but passable....The mantlet isn't right so I'll attack it with a file.
I tried to work this out myself, but what is wrong with the Warlord mantlet?
-
Not sure if it was the parts choice when I put it together but the narrow mantle turret attachment is very sharp edged when it should be cast. I've found a much better version on the Churchill frame (NA75 version) so I've pried the old one off and added the better one. Just needs a bit of filler.
Oh and 2x centaurs are built... Can't help myself when kits are sitting around unbuilt... Printing off dome Bow MG covers and I found 2x 95mm howitzers in the spares from my 3x Churchills.
I had to cut off most of the mudguards on the croms, the centaurs were very basic!
-
Hussar, Hunter and Hound
-
Trying to work out how to do the names so I 3d printed them
-
Excellent.
-
Porpoise ammunition sled
-
Great looking Centaur, very cool 8)
-
Great progress 👍
-
I have been busy today
Not quite the same cornflake packet skills as Mark though
-
Bloody hell! That’s impressive! :-*
Going to be fun painting the reticule markings on the Centaurs. Pretty sure there are some good quality LCAs out there already if you want to save yourself some work. Barrage Miniatures comes to mind.
-
Thanks!
The barrage one is pretty pricey and the cheap Sarissa is weirdly proportioned.
I'll see after the LCT is complete if I still need the LCA
-
Found a mistake this morning I'll correct later.
The engine room access bit is wrong, but should be easy to correct.
Going to 3D print a lot of the deck fittings as it's easier than making multiple copies of things or scrach building complicated things
3d print:
Ventilators, Anchor Winch, Anchor, bollards, Life rings, life raft, 20mm Oerlikons, fuel tank, plus other bits no doubt...
-
Very impressed as usual Rich
I managed 1 Centaur for my Commandos
I also used 1/72 decals for the turret markings with a bit of snipping they worked OK.
-
Pics? ;)
-
That is looking good.
-
Very impressed as usual Rich

Wish I'd thought of that, took me years to get round to painting something on mine.
-
I was going to make a jig but it's going to be painful... looked at 1/48 decals but I can get 4 centaurs worth or a centaur adn a sherman for $10 plus $7 post.
Going to go with paint I think. I'll paint th etanks in acrylic the use enamel for the markings - I can then correct them after with a bit of white spirit.
-
This looks like an absolutely fantastic project! ;D I will be checking regularly for updates
EC
-
THanks!
Might have found a solution to the graticule marks... it's labour intensive but I think workable.
I've found water slide decal lines and this will give a crisp line I can work with. Lots of work... Need to find some suitable numbers now.
-
That's a lot of lines... but why are you putting that strange blue colour on the tanks?
;)
-
Ordered some paint for the tanks and the LCT. Centaurs are Service drab (ie brown) and the Sherman is Olive Drab. Centaurs were apparently not repainted after they were pulled from storage. LCT is jsut mid grey.
Found some decals for the graticules but not convinced as I need a lot of zeros...
Also found some decals for the LCT numbers.
-
Good to see this progressing. 👍
-
I've managed to get the bollards, anchor and ventilators to print, first time adn almost without problem. The problem being my anchor winch base was too thin and warped. But easily fixed. Off with an impromptu work trip until Friday now though so I can't assemble it all!
-
Bit of progress:
I made the bow ramp - then it became apparent that the Port bow section was aobut 3mm out of line... so ripped that off and rebuilt it.
Stuck the 3d printed bits on and started on the detail. Also cellulose doped the card so I can be a bit more confident with my sanding/tweaking. It's got a deckhouse now.
The RMASG is also progressing, the Wading kits on the Sherman and Centaurs is done and I've re-undercoated them. I'll re-base-coat them tonight probably.
Those turret decals/markings are going to be 'interesting' I'm now tempted to use a biro and 'engrave' them into the plastic then paint. but I've also got a white ink pen on the way to try. I'll hit them with gloss varnish first so I can always undo it...
-
Distracted again
BARV
-
Ironic name for tank given it's current condition.and definitely one of my favorite funnies.
-
It's a bloody nighmare of angles... Getting it symmetrical has been a challenge. Mostly involving building it nearly symmetrical then using a large file to fix it... lol
Front 'nudge bar' and detailling next.
The rear hull is held together with loads of external bolts and I'm not sure if I want to try to 3d print them in detail or just add strip/rod.
The base model is a mess as it's me previous RMASG sherman repurposed. I was never happy that it was an M4 hull not an M4A4 (V) hull. I had to grind off alot of the previous surface detail like the nasty cast on tow rope and some of the tools.
I'll raid the bits box see if I can find an appropriate tankie as a commander. The problem is a lot of the Warlord crews are upscaled 1/72 and relatively tiny.
-
If you get stuck I might as well make you a half figure to go with the navy type's.( just need to adjust hair line's and add two buckles so essentially there done)As they flew out I've a little spare time to fit it in.Before I get sidetracked on a personal project.
Mark.
-
:-*
I'll check the box of crew (I've got quite a few) first but might take you up on that! (Still need the details of the stuff you need ;) )
-
Nice work.
I saw one of those at the D-Day museum a few years ago, I thought it was scarily complicated.
-
It's a mess of angles!
-
It's a mess of angles!
Some of which are non-Euclidian.
-
Some of which are non-Euclidian.
THat is what filler was invented for ;)
-
Mostly involving building it nearly symmetrical then using a large file to fix it... lol
Ahhh, I know that method all too well. ;)
-
:o You mean there's another way?
Just need to tidy them up to night but it should give you an idea.Gun crew look ropey in the pic so I'll probably beat the loader until it understands whats expected of it.
-
Bloody hell! Going to have to do a good job on the LCT(A) now to do them justice!!
-
BARV done. Hatches shut so no crew... I was going to leave one open... But turns out it's not a hatch... o_o
-
Bloody magnificent Rich! I’ve always wanted to see a BARV in this scale. The Australian Army made their own, very similar version on a Grant hull.
-
Thanks!
I'll hit it with some undercoat later and tidy up the scruffy bits around the glacis. Going to add a load of stowage and ropes after paint.
This RMASG is a colourful lot: the Sherman is Olive Drab, the Centaurs are Service Drab and the BARV is Sea Grey. Makes a change form Russian Green!
Playing around with White Ink pens too, they work pretty well. I'm hoping to use them for the turret markings... going ot make a jig to hold the pen.
(Missing a bit of tooth this morning and apparently I'm not allowed to use miliput to fix it.... off to the tooth-docs later.)
-
I am very impressed that you have done a BARV - :-*
I think that is the first time I have seen a model of one.
-
Well I had 'Fox' as the RMASG Sherman OP tnak from when I started my Commandos but it was the wrong mark of hull, should have been a V but it was a M4. Also the painted turret marking weren't very good.
So (as usual) the project got out of hand and I bought a proper V hull, but for some reason the RMASG Shermans had narrow mantlets and no applique armour, I guess because they were never intended for extended use. So I nicked the narrow mantlet turret from 'Fox'.
This left me with a 'V' turret and M4 hull... I was going to build a hybrid but then I thought a BARV would be more appropriate for D-Day and more use in a tank game (Bolt Action) as an ARV. Not sure where they landed but they were all over the place on the beaches.
All this for one game in the Bolt Action Welsh Open in Cardiff (Tickets still avaialbe!) which is just for fun!
I've also got a spare Cromwell so I'm probably going to build a Centaur Dozer at some point (Like I need another project)
I think I'm going to open up the closed hatch on the Barv so I can add a commander.
-
I should add I also have a LCI and a Sherman Crab flail tank - with a working flail.
The ultimate plan is to build a pair of LCAs for the infantry as well.
-
May be you need one of these :D
-
What is that?
???
-
May be you need one of these :D
Bloody hell! That shaerman is going to be about 6ft under by the time that floats off!
-
lol
I couldn't quite figure out what happens to the bloke stood under the craft on the tanks engine bay . o_o
-
"Acceptable losses"

To make things easier. I can rake through my masters boxes and dig out a couple of metal lewis guns if you like.

I was thinking of printing them but if you can spare them...! :D

Oh yes you do....
-
The LCA on the Sherman chassis is an interesting pic, where did you find it? With regards to the 'too many projects' problem well, room for a small one? Amphibious shed or bizarre Universal Carrier, you decide...
-
Bugger
-
BARV paint too
-
Magnificent thread,brilliant!
-
Loving the strange and wonderful engineering kits!
-
Dammit I'm now eyeing up my universal carrier...
-
Rich ,
The carrier is piece of cake.
I've a master for it floating around(no pun intended) for 1st corps.
Those little square bracket patches you see on the carriers post landing are for the locking rods .Only tricky bit is the snorkels (making them sausage finger proof. So you can move it ;D)
I'm just amazed Mrs H hasn't pointed out (yet) that Sunshine isn't just good painting light.
When she does it'll be craft fairs, car boots, and lawn mower for you.
(How do I know ?Well could I tell you once We're back from the Garden centre and the farmers market.cut the lawn filled the kids pool ,gone to Argos to pick up something for her sister. Oh and gone some where nice for lunch. :D )
-
Oh I know all about that already ;D
Out dining table hasn't seen diners for about 6 months as it's either a battlefiled, or a mess of various wool products (We've multiple unwashed fleeces knocking around too - they bloody stink)
-
The LCA on the Sherman chassis is an interesting pic, where did you find it? With regards to the 'too many projects' problem well, room for a small one? Amphibious shed or bizarre Universal Carrier, you decide...
It's the deep wading kit used quite commonly on Universal Carriers for the Normandy landings.
-
Dozer done
-
It's okay. But I bet you can't put a fruit pastel in your mouth without chewing it. ;D
Totally get the extra umf.But slow down Rich, your making us all look bad.
-
;D
I made the bolt heads for the side plates.... OK I used a mould but I still made them.
Tomorrow - family stuff but probably a (Completely unneeded) Universal carrier with wading kit.
-
Great work on a great thread :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Very interesting stuff but with your output you are putting us all to shame
Are you intending to build the whole 79th armoured division
-
Brilliant.
But slow down Rich, your making us all look bad.
In the time you took to build that (and all the other projects you have on the go) I have stuck a couple of balkenkreuz on a JPzr 38(t).
-
I do have a Crab too...
-
Inside
-
I’ve got a video on my phone of this crab actually working.
Awesome.
You are a god Rich... lol

Decals for Landing Craft, admittently 1/72 but............... beggars;

-
Painting in between baby duties...
-
Looking good. I take it the Centaur dozer is based on a 1/48 kit, while the rest are 1/56?
-
Who makes the Crab btw?
-
Nope. All the same base kit. It's just significantly wider due to the blade.
No mod kits here. All additions are scratch built ;)
-
The base kits are all warlord by the way.
Changed the batteries in the Crab and it still works.
-
Crab hull

Found a rather snazzy 3d model of an Oerlikon 20mm but it's a bit too detailed - it's nut-and-bolt accurate and even includes rifling! I'm working on simplifying it for printing.
Will give my LCT(A) a bit of bite.
The LCT(A) just needs it's main armour adding around the poop deck and then details:
Make and fit Centaur raised platform.
Anchor is printed but need to make the anchor frame
Reprint anchor winch (first go failed)
Stanchions - make or buy (too fragile to print)
Fairleads - draw/print
Add access doors
-
Very nearly done. Just the commander to paint and tow ropes to add
-
Another view

And another

Terrific! Really impressed. Bravo mate 👍

Thanks :D
Porpoise stl is up for free here:

I’m sorely tempted to repaint the Crab now to match to Sherman V – My painting techniques have got a little better.
Also I’m really enjoying the old-school builds and I’m sorely tempted to make use of the 3x churchills I have for Kingforce (that’s never been used) they are undercoated but nothing else.
They would make some proper funnies… An AVRE with double onion, an ARK and a Log Carpet perhaps… argh. I’ve enough stuff to do already!
Log Carpet has been a bit of a niggle for a while – they are little known versions and there appear to be very few pics (none of them loaded with logs)
I also like the Gun Carrier and Wurlitzer versions but they never saw any combat.
-
79 Div's Engineers must have been very busy boys with the work needed to make the prototypes for all those Funnies that never saw service as well as those that did.
-
I wonder how many never got to that stage - must have been hundreds of proposals.
-
Very nice, I love the Centaur dozer and the porpoise sleds :) A Centaur tow/munitions carrier for Rubicon's 17pdr (when they get round to it) would be nice...just saying :D
-
Was there such a thing? Google comes up with nothing...
-
My bad, actually adapted Crusader hulls used (clearly having a hard of thinking moment) :?
-
I wonder how many never got to that stage - must have been hundreds of proposals.
I think my favourite was the Churchill DD tank.

Valentine was first ;)

Happens to us all.
As you say, something to go with Rubicon's 17 pounder.

Well if the Churchills get scanvenged to make Funnies I've an unemploied Crusader III too...

There are definitely plates in the Osprey NVG book, not sure about drawings.

IT looks liek 'Duntocher' above has been modified to add a wading screen too. Would be good to see the rear of it.

I thought the Tetrarch was first, or have I got my order mixed up again, quite likely. Anyhoo I thought the black prince would be more your style. ;)
-
lol I considered it a while back. I've enough projects as it is!
-
I can't find drawings :/
Me neither, however they are available on request from Bovington, by all account in exhaustive detail, if you're of a mind to go to those lengths for an undoubtedly cool, but not exactly vital project.
-
TBH If I'm building the one in the pic with wading gear I doubt there are any details. Plus if I can't find them not many others will be able to pick fault either...
-
Fair enough, I look forward to seeing it here (though should you wish at any point, £10 gets the technical diagrams from: library@tankmuseum.org. (http://library@tankmuseum.org.))
-
Bit more work on the LCT and my Beachmaster
-
More detail

Beachmaster

You know a project is getting out of hand when you find yourself building a miniature ropewalk as the bought rope won't drape properly...0.1mm wire made into rope.
-
Wow!
-
You know a project is getting out of hand when you find yourself building a miniature ropewalk as the bought rope won't drape properly...0.1mm wire made into rope.
It was only at this point you realised!!
Great looking results, though.
-
Give the LCT a lick of paint last night - it's not finished but it makes it feel like I've actually done something...
Still need some deck fittings and so on but need to draw and print them. Fairleads mostly.
Also need ot add a few detailly bits to the hull like hatches and so on. Nothnig ocmplex but will break up the big flat areas.

Quick and dirty 20mm Oerlikons

Whoa, just found this thread. Very impressive builds!
-
For quick and dirty those are nice looking guns.
-
Thanks - only took about 2 hours.
-
To design them? Very impressive.
-
To draw the guns, Mark did the crew!
-
Nice work Rich I can see them becoming useful for all sorts of things
-
I didn't realise you could print such fine detail at such a small scale.
Stunning :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
I didn't realise you could print such fine detail at such a small scale.
Stunning :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Yes, and it's tough enough but the barrel would benefit from being replaced with wire for ultimate robustness.
Note the springs around the barrel too they are 0.2mm diameter (Oviouosly supported internally). It'll go much finer that this if needed but it gets a bit fragile.
For raised but supported surfance panels I use 0.2-0.3mm, rivets are 0.4-0.6mm anything smaller can get a bit lost. Free unsupported panels can't be less than 0.7mm as they are too fragile, 1.0mm with a champhered edge (So they look thinner) is better.
-
Very nearly complete
-
More
-
Last one for now
-
Oh and the BARV
-
You mad bugger.
-
This is an amazing project - well done :-*
-
Beautiful modelling :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Now you just need 5000 more ships and you are good to go and invade
-
Truly impressive!
-
Nice.
