Title: Replacement Ruleset for LotOW suggestions
Post by: Riley.Keith on June 24, 2019, 01:36:48 PM
Apologies as a newbie to the forum and there might be 1k other threads covering the same thing but this is a big forum with a LOT of posts so for a newcomer its a load of stuff to try and go through. So feel free to point me in the right direction.

Been playing LotOW for what seems like an eternity. I look at the big list of alternative rules around and DMH looks good but is there a little gem that I am missing ? I want uncomplicated and fast paced and compaign or character progression is not the be all and end all. Any suggestions please ?

Thanks, this sounds good, I found a review already but quick scan sees the words fast and furious gameplay so that sounds promising. https://meeples.wordpress.com/2017/07/05/review-fistful-of-lead-reloaded/

Any gameplay videos around you know of ?

Fistful of Lead as suggested above. My absolute favourite set of rules, great fun to play, easy to learn but many tactical options and no two games need ever be the same. You can make them as in depth as you like with character traits, special skills etc, or leave them out and keep them simple.

There are various AArs on this board using the FFoL system, but also in many of the other boards as the system has expanded to include Sci Fi, Gothic Horror, Post Apocalypse to name but a few.

I think there maybe some Youtube videos of the game in action. BaronVonJ the author is a forum member so no doubt he will be along to offer more info.

I promise you won't regret buying it, I used to play LotOW and got bored wit the mechanics.

What they said. Yep. Tons of positive reviews around the internet for Fistful. You'll learn the rules really quick.
I you want dip your toe in before you spend money on the printed version, it's only $6.

Here's a play through for Galactic Heroes, the SciFi version. A few differences but gameplay is the same.

Yes, Fistful of Lead.  Great, fun set of rules.

Have to agree with the above - Fistful of Lead is a great game, easy to pick up with plenty of "playability". It also works well with 3+ players.

I also play Dead Mans Hand, which is very cinematic and also has a campaign system.

We used to play Legends of the Old West, and moved over to Dead Man's Hand, which we really like. Very cinematic, and lots of fun decisions for the players.

Another vote for FFoL from me. I’ve played dead mans hand too but FFoL wins out because of its flexibility and fast play that still produces great narrative games and campaigns.

I used to play Deadlands : The Great Railwars a lot. Interested to hear more about FaffoL, but also Dead Mans Hand. Do they do something unique?

PS: I got Draculas America as a Birthday present and liked what I read. It’s pretty simple though with just one stat.

interesting, I saw that demo'd never considered it as didn't want a zombie game but can it just be played vanilla ?

I'll buck the trend and suggest Gunfighter's Ball by Knuckleduster.  It fits all your criteria and is a blast to play.  In addition, Knuckleduster makes the best Old West figures available by far.

Absolutely! I really like the mechanics, and you could play a whole campaign vanilla style if that was your choice!

While I've all but given up promoting it, you can find Shoot N' Skedaddle rules for free (the game is based around card decks you'd need to purchase) if you feel like reading a rule set before purchase.

It's a game based around randomized "pick up" games with no need to organize gangs or posses beforehand.  The campaign is undergoing a revision (and isn't likely the strong point if I'm honest).  But for a "build a town...thrown down some minis...let the bloodshed commence" it works pretty well.

I'll second Tommy's suggestion for Gunfighter's Ball.  You can pick up a copy of the Greenhorn Rules for free off of their website (here (https://gunfightersball.blogspot.com/2017/10/the-greenhorn-edition-free-downloads.html).)  The Greenhorn rules are a fully playable set of the rules that you could pretty much play forever.  The full version gets you some additional rules, plus rules for customizing characters, and some scenarios, painting guides, etc.

Do any of these have built in campaign rules like LotOW?

SnS does/did, but I'm restructuring it currently (though the existing rulebook is around).  I'll admit though it's not a super robust campaign system, or as good as I'd like it to be (hence the restructuring).

Dracula's America has an excellent campaign system

Dead Man's Hand has a campaign system in the first supplement (there's also a second supplement with undead and such like)

That's one area that Gunfighter's Ball doesn't really do, is campaigns.  They have rules for surviving heroes advancing and gaining perks and more action cards, but the shootouts in GFB are so deadly that one bad (or good, depending on the side of the table you're on) roll and you're dead.

GFB shines as a game to put on the table at a convention with about 8 people all playing a couple of figures and watching the unadulterated mayhem unfold.

That is very similar to SnS's main aim.  While I've fussed around with a couple campaign options, its strength is simply "set up....play a wild game".

I doubt I'll suddenly design a glorious campaign mechanic, particularly given the randomized nature of peoples' posses, etc.
