Title: My Grim Dark Future in 15mm

Looks guard enough to me.

Great job, I really enjoy this set!

May I ask what you'll use as sentinel and Leman Russ? Clear Horizon has a sweet sentinel and Proxie models have a very 'Russ-y' tank, that is affordable.

Hey, Ock!

I am thinking of the Novan Regular MBT for the Leman Russ and a DIMOG Walker from Khurasan for the Sentinels.

Hey, Ock!

I am thinking of the Novan Regular MBT for the Leman Russ and a DIMOG Walker from Khurasan for the Sentinels.

The Novan tank was spot on, hadn't seen it before. I'm not a fan of the DIMOG Walker, though - at least not in the role as a sentinel.

Have you seen this?

It's even on sale:

Yes, the Clear Horizon walker is perfect for that role, I know. I simply haven't found out yet, if it can be purchased at the moment. Seems they sent stuff to their backers first and wait for a re-stock.

Yes! Lovely stuff - I’m increasingly moving to trying more and more to capture a ‘Rogue Trader’ vibe in my 15mm too. You’ve done a great job here. I really like GZGs NSL range - the fact that there’s two troop types with consistent weapons is a real plus.

Have you shown off your genestealer cult on LAF yet?

Proxie models makes a plastic 15mm Leman Russ stand-in, also.  He calls it the Trencher.  I like the design better than Vanguard's tank, but YMMV.

http://www.proxiemodels.com/product/trencher/

The pic on his site is bad, but here are some better shots of mine.  I chose not to add the side sponsons, but they are included in the kit.

Here's my Genestealer Cult I started some time ago. Will have to add some more cultists and weapon teams, but besides from that, it's done.

I could be interested.
40k in 15mm has me thinking of doing this mass armies I wouldnt do in 28mm. Genestealers, Guard and Orks.
A new Facebook group has started up for those interested. 40k in 15mm is the name. Seen Skullhamma's lovelies over there.

That's right. It is that Kremlin guy. I hesitated for the same reason, but in the end I decided that I need him. I have payed more silly prices for lots of 28mm collector's items... sigh.

Another fantastic entry! I keep meaning to get some of the nox - ‘chaos’ is underserved in 15mm. You’re paintjob is ace here - when I was a kid and 2nd edition 40k was kicking off I loved anything Khorne, and it still tugs at my heart strings!

Have you seen that Onslaught make some not-Bloodletters in 15mm?

Everything looks so cute in 15 mm. An adorable little gene stealer cult.  lol

Is it mainly time and money that makes you go for 15mm? I think it even has an artistic merit in its own right.  :)

I can't speak for Skully, but to me, 15mm offers something different than 28mm and 6mm, and it isn't about money or time. It's something about the community and the wide selection of minis available, the feeling that anything is possible...
Title: Re: My Grim Dark Future in 15mm
Post by: zrunelord on July 14, 2019, 12:42:52 PM
Dr. 15/18 mm are much more detailed today & there are loads of ranges . Painting them to a good standards takes  much less time than 28/32mm. Obviously they're cheaper & take much less space.
Unfortunately most of them are metal with some in resin, no plastics. Vehicles are mostly resin but 1/76 - 1/72nd plastic kits can be easily used for 15/18mm.

Utterly brilliant thread, now I have to dig out my 15mm stash!

The Genestealer cult are a thing of envy.

Great variety of ranges and painting, particularly using the epic greater demon with your Chaos chaps (a model I fondly remember fielding with the hilarious Lord of Battle), those nox figures are perfect for the job and I've a couple of sets for a similar job myself.

Appropriately inspirational for the impending summer holidays!
Title: Re: My Grim Dark Future in 15mm
Post by: DivisMal on July 15, 2019, 07:58:26 PM
Well for me 15/18mm is a very friendly community. The models do paint up much better and faster than modern 32-35mm minis, but imho the greatest advantage is the space needed, which is so much less than for larger figures, and terrain. You can make terrain much easier and cheaper and it looks way better in scale.
Check most buildings for larger models. They are strangely shrinked to fit on the tabletop.  Hurches with the size of a portaloo, trees that are thinner than the thighs of warriors etc.

Combine that with an awesome ever increasing range of models and you have a feeling like in the early days of 25/28mm wargaming, like Rogue Trader, for instance!

Not to jump the thread.....
I forgot to add & to continue with Divismal, if your into scratchbuilding, doing vehicles in 15/18 is relatively easy, especially since they're smaller.

In case anyone is interested, I just caught wind that Proxie Models has 15mm tanks on the cheap. Very not-WH40k...

A Trencher (not Leman Russ) http://www.proxiemodels.com/product/trencher/ (http://www.proxiemodels.com/product/trencher/)

Terrible picture:

And they have a mobile artillery (no pic on the site)  http://www.proxiemodels.com/product/mobile-artillery/ (http://www.proxiemodels.com/product/mobile-artillery/)

Found this online. Might be close to what they are producing, though they seem to change the models periodically:

Seems pretty suitable for 15mm grim dark adventures.

Love the white on those droids, the shading is superb and the little flick of red on their heads really brings them out.

I haven't wrapped my head around conversions at this scale yet. 28mm figures are better suited to head/weapon swaps, at least for my fat fingers. I will definitely need to give this a shot. That guy turned out about as perfectly "not" space marine as you can get!

Who'd have thought to use a desteria knight as an SM commander. 👍👍👍👍.

I plan to use khurasan's post apoc government forces as termies & marines & also Nuclear shrimp ones. That way i will have 2 distinct types of armour .

Keep it up

No big deal, really... I cut everything out of styrofoam and and use a ball of tinfoil that I roll over here and there to get the structure effect on the walls. Then I paint in dark grey, drybush with grey, wash with black and afterwards a final and moderate drybrush with light grey. Hope that helps.

To all: Thank you very much! :)

Good repurposing of the old 6mm stuff.  If you've got any of the Epic snail-crawler "vehicles" left I'd think the Dactylis would make fine 15mm Biovore variants and Exocrines would be nice generic bio-cannon platforms - maybe pseudo-Pyrovores?

Those Scions are awesome!

Very tempted to do the Burning of Prospero in 15mm now as I just take forever to paint 28mm. I've already been doing Epic for Horus Heresy and that has involved a lot of 3D prints and the quality can be jaw droppingly good.

3D printing is certainly revolutionary, once you start off down that road you won't turn back, so much is possible for wargaming that was the stuff of dreams beforehand.

I felt like painting Space Marines. Here are the first five of my Dark Angels.

I wonder why GW never went to this scale. If they did, I wasn't aware of it. For the size of the battles, and including vehicles, this scale is much better suited. Granted, there wouldn't be quite so much of a cash grab at this scale, but I wouldn't think of it as an either-or prospect. Rather, I would think that you would get even bigger armies, and perhaps whole chapters of marines or whole guard forces. I cant help thinking there was a real missed opportunity there.

Them shifty dark angels are slick  :-*

Gotta stop doing this man I don't need the temptation to do 40k in 15mm lol

And apparently GW did do a series of figures in 15mm years ago as a part of a test project but they've never seen the light of day. They still exist though apparently, locked away with all sorts of test models that have been kept back for records sake.

The Novan tank was spot on, hadn't seen it before. I'm not a fan of the DIMOG Walker, though - at least not in the role as a sentinel.

Have you seen this?

It's even on sale:

Rebel makes some biped walkers. Not quite right but they are cheap and plastic-ish so easy to mod into more of a long gun on the side configuration.

It's worth adding that his selection of bases is very helpful for anyone trying to avoid paying absurdist GW prices for the oddball sizes and shapes their games have embraced.  He's also got flight bases, which have started to get kind of hard to find since whoever was making the old hex stand type burned the mold out.

Skully,

What kind of modifications are you making on your marines? Weapon swaps, head swaps... pose changes?

I've started designing my own 3d files for my 15mm sci-fi and have found it to be both awesome and somewhat limited depending on what I'm attempting to do. Remixing a pre-made file is nice, but I'm finding that putting in the work to learn scratch building is really paying off dividends.

Cool minis, Skully.

I started playing with my resin printer over the weekend and I think it is safe to say that the learning curve to get started is a bit steeper than FDM printers, but the results are also quite a bit nicer!

& I need to get into SLA....😏
Fdm is good for vehicles also but I think it is more
Technical... i.e. you need to learn to fix things as it is more
Mechanical. There is a learning curve in order to get the best of it as everything in life but It can be done with perseverance.

Skullhamma,

based on the high quality of the sculpts I am assuming you are using a resin printer?

Very well done and I am glad the printer has open this avenue for 40K / Necromunda in the "bestest" scale.   ;)

What I tried to say (but didn't manage), was that I find Scully's dioramas impressive, since they often showcases entire squads.

Makes sense to me.  I always have better results from group shots than I do with single figs.  Some of it is from image cropping, some of it the way the auto-focus works, but mostly I think it's just distracting from my own flawed painting by simultaneously throwing too many mistakes at the viewer to process them all.  :)

I ran a Fistful of Lead Baigger Gattle game at a local convention in March with a massive amount of 15mm Grim Dark troops. Eight players. 50+ units on the table. Everyone that walked by said the same thing: " This is how 40k should have been scaled". It just looks cool.

I doubt it would have stopped people from spending, the armies would have just been grander. As you said, it would have had the epic feel that gets missed at  28mm/32mm scale. Whatever they are aiming for.
