Title: SLA Industries: Cannibal Sector 1
Post by: Cypher226 on July 07, 2019, 04:58:30 PM
With the impending delivery of my KS stuff, I thought it was time to paint up the stuff I've already got!

Here's the first of the Shivers (SWAT esque urban suppression units, essentially. Ordinary humans hopelessly outclassed by virtually everything else in the setting).

Sorry about the blur, but this is the Captain:

More to come. I've got the rest of the starter patrol, a starter of Carrien, and a selection of Ops to paint yet....

Nice.  Wonder who the sculptor was?  The style looks vaguely Naismith-y.

Nice one. Never heard of the game/range of figs. That miniature is called a 'Shiver'? Guess I'll have to get one now.

Thanks! Work continues on these guys, hoping to get the medic and the squad's teddy bear mascot/objective marker finished tonight (pics to follow).

@Dentatus - it looks like he's only available in this pack now, unfortunately

They're nicely cast minis, but some of the detail is aa bit shallow.

Thanks. Found a metal one on eBay. Last one from the seller, apparently.

Love the SLA setting.  The old game's mechanics were very much RPG - I'd be interested to learn how they've been tweaked to accommodate a miniature wargame.

Can you point me to anything that's been published in that regard?

It's a completely different system. Mind you, the 2nd Ed rulebook is going on kickstarter on 17th September, a d word is that's a completely new system too.

The current publishers are here -
https://nightfall.games/ (https://nightfall.games/)

The CS1 rulebook is currently being sent out to backers of the original kickstarter (and is apparently a 400 odd page book, so there's tonnes of new and updated setting material in there), including aa lot of rpg-useful info. According to some who've got it already, there's a lot of snippets of the Truth in there too...

Progress!

4 of 6 completed. I added a pack and slung FEN carbine to one to make a medic, and the other two are just grunts (another matching pair to come)

And of course, no Shiver patrol leaves base with their faithful mascot, Colin (not the official one, this little guy's from a TTcombat resin pack):

These guys all need their bases finishing - there will be added litter and stuff fitting the ruins of the Sector.

Very nice work.

The mascot looks good, though https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2016/06/if-you-go-down-to-woods-today.html (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2016/06/if-you-go-down-to-woods-today.html) or the alt-sculpt might be better suited to SLA.

Shiver Squad finished at last!

My CS1 stuff was delivered on Thursday, so I'll do an Unboxing thing this week coming. In the meantime, here's the first (very) work in progress Carrien:

A small update; I've finally finished my first test Carrien paint scheme.
For those not in the know, Carrien are essentially a pest - albeit a dangerous one in numbers. Their origins are something of a mystery to most but they are ubiquitous both in the city and the Cannibal Sectors

(apologies, it looks like I took these with a potato rather than a camera!) -

Now I'm happy with this, I intend to finish the rest of the pack  :D

Looking good.  How big are the bases on these figs?

Excellent.

Good to see these being painted. How do they compare in size to other figures?

Thanks again  :)

Hoping to churn the Carrien out by Sunday and get a trial game in.

Hobby Services - the bases are Warmachine style 32mm, also known (for obvious reasons) as lipped based.

UVS - humans are 32mm I think; other races vary (Carrien being a touch smaller, Shaktars a bit bigger, Stormers and Scavs being pretty massive).
The size difference really brings home just how skilled SLA Ops have to be, and how much firepower the Company has to bring to bear in the Cannibal Sectors and on War Worlds.

I'll try and get a couple of comparison shots with a couple of well known lines this weekend  :)

Thanks.  Thought as much, but there are so many bases on the market these days.

I bought the rules - they look promising!

So I've been looking through the published CS1 rulebook (~80 pages in all) and they strike me as coherent, well-articulated, and suitably laid out.  There could be some room for some complementary Reference/Summary Sheet (QRS) - I might even give that a try myself - but on the whole, it's an attractive package.

What I'm yet to track down are details of (1) Agents (personalities/characters used in a Patrol/Squad), (2) how one accommodates for Glyph and Ebb powers (none of the Units included in the rulebook's roster seems to have Ebb stats) and (3) Vehicles (granted the setting largely precludes the use of vehicles in any material way, but beyond the Camera Drone, there's nothing to be found).

SLA has such a rich meta - on par with many other franchises out there and a lot more sophisticated than many - one can't help but want to include a team of Operatives, including a Stormers, Frothers and Shaktars etc.  Give me the means to play a scenario placing a Team of Operatives running into a Ex-War Criminal whilst dealing with a Cannibal Tribe and I'll be a very happy man.

Now I just have to find some suitable miniatures...

2 Carrien finished now. Running a bit behind but keep getting sidetracked by other projects!  o_o

5 more to go!

Bermanj, it sounds like you've got the stripped down rulebook, rather than the full hardback (c. 300 pages, iirc)

I've not gone through it in detail, but I believe Agents and Ebb etc are in the main rules (omitted from the small book due to Ops and Ebb users not being in the starter forces.

In terms of additional minis, I think Batman figures scale up OK - you're looking for big 28/32's. I'll take a few comparison shots.

Yep, I have the 84-ish page pdf.  300 page hardback would be great, but the price is a killer, and that's not even getting it shipped from the UK to Australia!  Ouch!!  Damnation, I want Agents!

I'd appreciate some pics of minis in comparison - thank you!

I played a game of it a week or two ago with some mates which was fun - a bit of an experiment.  If anyone cares to give it a read, it describes some of the rules, mechanics etc without giving the whole game away. https://southernbermanblog.blogspot.com/2019/07/sla-industries-cannibal-sector-1-wargame.html (https://southernbermanblog.blogspot.com/2019/07/sla-industries-cannibal-sector-1-wargame.html)

Hmm, I appear to have unintentionally painted some Cannibal Sector 1 figs for a commission job - a pair of Dogeybones being used as 15mm scale Martian mecha.  They've had a minor conversion with 15mm scale energy rifles in place of the antenni, for times when you might not want to shoot a full-on vehicular weapon at a target (due to, say, not wanting to blow a hole in the spaceship bulkhead it's standing in front of).   Also not quite in SLA Division 9 colors, I'd say.  Still, they're nice sculpts, and certainly scale jump well.

A range I will have to look out for.

Between this range and Malifaux everyone dreaming of an all-pig army must be feeling very happy about life.  And really, who doesn't dream of an all-pig army?  :)

Could someone please post pics of the various minis next to some W40k type figures so that we can get a better appreciation of their scale and proportions?
