Raglan's Cold War Gets Hot
(http://euromaidanpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/nato-ussr-1954.jpg)
Having served in the BAOR in the 1980s, I thought it would be interesting to start a small collection of 28mm miniatures and vehicles covering this period and beyond. The following thread will chart my progress, outlining the miniature manufacturers selected and featuring the painted miniatures in my collection. I will also write up some scenarios and battle reports from my games.

Great stuff, looking forward to what you come up with...always fancied Conqueror tanks myself...
-
Following.
-
Very keen to follow this. 👍 I am an ex Tankie of thirty years. ‘78 to ‘08. 😬
-
Ooh, this should be promising! ;)

Cheers guys, no pressure then ;)

British Army of the Rhine Combined Arms Battle Group - Globetrotter
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/5osSy1Rn4HoXErfJYME6scmHrFfm1SUDu9t5kjTDp7OJUMEXzghu16wPeQTyuTT3LEw5yAi8rB1h4dImh425uDXUrUrN2fUIjYBHlgvCPeN1N6ptUt_zbW9NifnovObHpp_5=s0-d)
As an ex-footslogger, my obvious first choice is an armoured infantry platoon:
Orders of Battle
British Mechanised Infantry
Platoon HQ of 6 soldiers
3 x Rifle Sections with 10 soldiers each
4 x FV432s
Light Armoured Recce Troop
4 x FV101 Scorpions
Heavy Armoured Tank Troop
4 x Chieftain MBTs
Reserve Armoured Tank Troop
3 x Centurion MK V Tanks
Air Support
1 x Lynx AH-1 TOW
-
Excellent, I had go at something similar in 20mm so looking forward to seeing how the big boys turn out.
-
What figure size / vehicle scale are you aiming for?
-
Definitely interested in seeing how this goes.
My first question is about your choice of infantry figures?
Under fire Miniatures are not doing a range, but Bill did mention someone else was and was hoping to be able to supply them. That has gone quiet though.
-
What figure size / vehicle scale are you aiming for?
I think it is 28mm and I think 1/48-1/50 based on this and previous threads.
-
Ah, me too, great stuff.
-
I think it is 28mm and I think 1/48-1/50 based on this and previous threads.
Totally correct
-
I served over there in the late 80's, attached to 3 RTR, will be interested to see what you come up with
-
Id go for Recce, nice troop of Scimitars, why hide in woods, roam the plains :) 12 Years 16th/5th Lancers.
-
Armoured support added to the British OOBs, I think this combination of units will give a good variety of units for the intended company level games.
-
This will be interesting!
-
Should the dismounted element of the infantry sections be 10 men? IIRC it was 8 was it not?
-

Some sections had 10 blokes in them

1/48 scale FV432 from HLBS
This is what you get in the box:
It's a well cast resin model with hardly any clean up to do. Having looked over the vehicle and compared it to old photos and also memory, it looks pretty accurate to me.

Very happy, I can only highly recommend the model.
-
Looks good (better than the HLBSCo Spartan)
-
For the British infantry platoon, I am going to use the Gripping Beast Falklands Range:
These can be ordered in a variety of headwear, I have gone for helmets on all.
-
Looks good (better than the HLBSCo Spartan)
That is a surprise, I have most of their Russian vehicles and they are brilliant
-
Air support added to the battle group in the form of a Lynx AH-1 TOW
-
That Gripping Beast range is fantastic! :)
-
They are nice but do come with the odd figure in Falklands specific kit, like commercial hiking gaiters on one or two poses. If you want something more specifically BAOR and just as nice a range, look at the old Mongrel range now being sold by Badger Games.
-
Yep worth looking at mongrel Brits specifically for BAOR :)
-
They are nice but do come with the odd figure in Falklands specific kit, like commercial hiking gaiters on one or two poses.
Mongrel has some great additions, so I will definitely added some for variety.
In respect of Brit soldiers wearing civilian kit, I would have to say we used all kinds of non-issue gear in the field, including webbing, bergens, gaiters, cold weather headgear, mittens, waterproofs, torches and combat knives.
-
We went to an American PX and bought a load of kit, gaiters, boots, water bottles etc
British army was not as well supplied as the USA!
-

In fact, I think it was only my SLR, helmet and camo trousers were standard issued kit.

I have the BMD (WIP here:https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/search?q=bmd&max-results=20&by-date=true (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/search?q=bmd&max-results=20&by-date=true)) and it is okay, I have not finished it yet. That was much better (the running gear is good Warlord quality).
The BRDM suffers from poor axle design.
The Ferret is a lovely kit (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2018/05/hlbs-british-ferret-armoured-car.html (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2018/05/hlbs-british-ferret-armoured-car.html)), there are a few air bubbles that need fixing. Almost Empress quality. Great axle design (this has not been glued together https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2018/06/hlbs-british-ferret-armoured-car-part.html (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2018/06/hlbs-british-ferret-armoured-car-part.html))
The Spartan is more poor Warlord quality, white metal running gear that does not appear to match the lower hull design plus separate wheels with no indication of where they go.
Bits and pieces photographs here: https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2019/07/hlbsco-spartan-apc.html (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2019/07/hlbsco-spartan-apc.html)
I have not got round to trying the running gear of my second Empress Scimitar (ignoring the difference in scale) against the HLBS hull. If that works, I might ask if I can buy a set of the Scimitar running gear.
And now back to our regular programming....

I welcome your thoughts?
-
I guess you agree the skirts need smoothing.
The turret bustle basket looks a bit odd, as does that front road wheel.
It is definitely Centurion shaped.
-
These orders of battle are very useful.
They also help me to focus on developing the collection in a systematic way.
-

It still requires a bit of work, but I think the imperfections on the main body can be hidden under some camo netting.

Cheers buddy, I should have both Brit and Ruskie infantry platoons painted within a month, plus a good chuck of the armour.

Gareth
That's some going :)

-
Is it just me or are those Soviet helmets a bit too conical?
-
I think they are meant to be wearing the SSh-68 helmet which is notably steeper sloped and more conical than WW2 versions. The helmet appears to be quite correct, shapewise.
The Centurion would probably come up quite well with some camo netting. As others have said the turret basket is a bit odd but it’s generally Centurion shaped. My bigger question is why would you want one for a 1980s force? I would have thought it was all Chieftains by the mid 1970s, AVREs aside. I suppose if you are fielding Danes it might work
-

This is why you will find the Centurions in the reserve slot of my British OBs, they have been pressed into service due to nesscessity ;)
-
I was doing a similar thing 10 years ago.
I used both mongrel and MOFO Brits,
I had a platoon in 432s and reserves in Saxons
Did the same as yourself with tanks, the reserve kit being older but sitting in storage is common
-

Would the UK have stocks of mk Vs rather than mk XIII?
-
The Centurion Mk V is such a classic cold war tank, it would be a shame not to include it in the OBs somewhere.

A little too late for my chosen period, however, I couldn't resist this great looking model. They have been cleaned up, undercoated black and given a dark green base coat with an airbrush.

Nice.

I think you answered your own question. I’m pretty sure that decent in terms of quality and Butler’s don’t belong in the sane sentence.

That's correct, they are not Butlers, I will post a link to company this evening.

Somewhat unfair, I feel. My experience is limited, but I've had some great models from Butler's: http://www.jemimafawr.co.uk/2019/04/25/some-m48-chaparral-sam-vehicles-butlers-printed-models/

To each their own I suppose.

Excellent.

Your Russians look great.
I have those same figures.
Hope to get started on them soon.
Also are looking to order some US Army
from Under Fire Mimis.
-
He may be looking to expand the range soon
-
I see he is planning to add to his Russians.
I have a bunch of Russians for 1980 Afghanistan I could use also.
I started to order some more Russians and US Army figures from him.
But have a question about postage from the UK to the US.
-
Just let me know if you can't agree a postage cost with him, as I would be happy to post them to you at cost.
-
Oh yeah, they look brilliant.
-
Fine. But it's a pity - you did not guess with the color of the uniform.
-
Fine. But it's a pity - you did not guess with the color of the uniform.
Not quite sure what you mean.
-
Fine. But it's a pity - you did not guess with the color of the uniform.
Odd comment?
-
Who needs guess work when you clearly have first rate reference material, I'd say you are spot on with your colour choices.
-
The color of the uniform of the Soviet infantry does not correspond to reality ;)

Too much brown.
The color remained the same as during the Second World War. There were options for shades, with a predominance of yellow or green. But never brown.
Bags and belts were never gray (or black) in color - they were different shades of khaki (from light to dark - randomly).
In a combat setting, shoulder straps and buttonholes had the color of a uniform. Officers never had epaulettes of red color. Ceremonial shoulder straps could be gold, field - khaki.
-
Thanks, but my blokes seem to be dressed in a very similar colour to those photos.
-
There are no problems - these are just figures for the game. lol
But believe the person who wore this uniform, that it does not look like a Soviet uniform. I would add yellow and green paint to this color. Or reduced the red.

-
Look pretty damn good. :D
-
Well done.
Your collection is growing.
Really like what I see so far.
-
Thank you chaps, it's very kind of you to say so :D
-
Bloody lovely looking figures, was a privilege to play with them. To me they look spot on and I cant wait to see them in action again 👍😀
-
Nicely painted but I reckon the uniform is somewhat too brown. The red collar tabs and shoulder boards look good and make the figures stand out but in reality I think you’ll find that they weren’t worn, other than in peace time exercises and for parade and barrack room dress. Even from an early point in the Afghan conflict, photos show an absence of the collar tabs and either the subdued, khaki, version of the shoulder boards or none at all on active service.
That said these are aesthetic choices and the flash of colour does look good.
-
2nd Motor Rifle Squad
1 x Squad Leader (armed with AKM/AK74)
4 x Riflemen (armed with AKM/AK-74)
2 x Machine Gunners(armed with PKM)
1 x Anti-Tank Gunner(armed w/ RPG-7)

-
If you are going with the non-subdued flashes and shoulder boards I reckon you owe it to yourself add the CA to the shoulder boards and the arm of service badge to the collar tabs. That will really make them pop.
Again, nice paint work.
-
Excellent.
-
The sleeve insignia was worn only on the greatcoat and on the Full dress uniform. For everyday uniforms, he was not used on his jacket.
Uniform of an private soldier of the Soviet army (70s - 80s):
1. The front (ceremonial) uniform.
2. Front-exit uniform.
3. Everyday uniform.
4. Field uniform.
5. Field uniforms of a new sample.
The color of the shoulder straps, the sleeve insignia and the stripe on the cap - according to the type of troops.
-
What do you reckon this would look like in 28mm?
That's a very personal question... ;)
-
Those figures look great, way better than what i can do. Though some of the comments about them, make me realise i had better never show mine, or i will have to burn them, part of the reason i do not post pictures.
-
Do not be afraid to show your work. :)
And if you mean my comments, I in no way criticize. I try to help achieve the best result ::)
-
I think the figures look awesome. I also wouldn't sweat the possibility of the tint being off by a little, after all...
https://butterfingeredmodelbuilder.wordpress.com/2019/07/13/the-correct-colors/
-
Your example is not correct. That's the whole point, that the brown shade was NEVER used in the Soviet uniform of this period.
Regarding the painting of Soviet military equipment - it had the same factory color only until the first major repair. Subsequently, it was painted with the paint that the soldiers themselves (who made repairs) hand-made on the spot. To do this, they were supplied with pigments and a binder from the warehouses, but the shade was already very diverse - this was not given significant significance.
-
Didn't even bother looking at the wehrmacht uniforms eh?
Whatever, you do you boo.
Raglan: the point stands that your models are awesome. Paint 'em day-glo purple if you want, they're yours after all.
-
I saw an image of German uniforms. But the variety of colors that we see there is just the result of the economic and material difficulties of the war period. Look at the uniforms of the Wehrmacht of the peace period - you will be surprised)))

Blitzkreig do one in 1/48.

Mumble mumble BAOR mumble mumble.....
Just saying.....

But our friends at Empress Miniatures can do the big olde Challenger 2 for 25 quid?
-
They don't, he has made the model but he hasn't made a production model. He reckons it won't sell for some reason.
That’s just fucking daft. You spend the time and money getting the thing sculpted and that’s going to be the overwhelming bulk of production costs for a resin model and you won’t produce it? Self-fulfilling prophecy then innit? I didn’t produce ‘em so nobody bought ‘em.
Oddly enough you see quite a bit of this in the wargaming world.
-
But our friends at Empress Miniatures can do the big olde Challenger 2 for 25 quid?
And very nice they are too. I must get round to finishing them ^__^.
The Blitzkrieg Chieftain is still on their site, just above the Centurion.
@Carlos, of course we have not actually seen the master model. Having read Heresy Miniatures travails over his dragon...
-
That’s just fucking daft.
I could't agree more buddy, it makes no sense.

The Blitzkrieg Chieftain is still on their site, just above the Centurion.
It's been there for about 18 months plus now.

Congratulations on a fantastic post and some amazing paintwork, I have really enjoyed this. Please do continue... as for uniform my unit also used lots of personal gear back in the 90's and early 2000's.

Nice tank.

Very nice. Shouldn’t the mech inf get a Carl Gustav per section! Maybe they’ve left it in the wagon. ;)

We always did :D

Love the painting on the T-72.
How many do you have painted now?
-
Oooh, thems nice.
You've done a cracking job on the DPM, in scale and looks right - minor bloody miracle as far as Im concerned - care to share the colours?
-
More marvelousness. Thanks for posting.
-
How many do you have painted now?
Only two T-72s, as most of my Russian tank strength is in T-62s and T-64s
-
Terrific work! Looks like the Chieftain being developed for Empress. There were only three callsigns per Sabre Troop , two in SHQ. Four were short term trialed in 4th Armoured (17th/21st Lancers in Munster)
-
Curious. Where did you find T-64s? I presume they are printer jobs.

Hi Gareth,
I read on TMP at Empress Miniatures are planing to do British and Russians, 1980s.
As of yesterday, nothing on their Facebook page.
I guess we should ask Paul, get the correct news.
What do you think? ;)
PS I was looking over the last photos you posted.
The Russians tanks in the town,
where is the Infantry support?
Something tells me trouble ahead. :o

Oh...My...God...Noooooooooooooooo! I have about 300 moderns, a couple hundred Indo-China/US Vietnam (not even finished buying these from you guys), about 1500 British/Egyptian/Madhists/Zulus Colonials, 50+ vehicles, a dozen boats, and about 50 buildings to paint! (All 28mm, mostly Empress, Eureka, Mongrel, and Footsore figures.) And now you’re going to foist upon me Paul Hicks’ 1980’s British and Russians? Are you guys and gals daft....or just masochists? ;)
-
Will be exciting to see what Empress will come out with.
More figures to add to my lead pile. lol
And I told my wife... O, never mind what I told her. ;)
-
Guys we do not want to hijack this thread so will start another Empress thread on the subject next week. ;)
