I will use this thread for my forthcoming Vietnam War project. Yes, I am jumping on the bandwagon, too.
I will start collecting with a US Marine platoon made from the Empress and Gringo40 ranges. So watch this space for upcoming pictures.
But first I need some infos of the heave mind what kind of buildings to use for Hue 1968. I know that there were a lot of french colonial buildings what else?
Are there any buildings in 28mm avalable that fit the bill?
-
Im using some of TTcombats eastern range for the Hue Garden Village Houses, some of Sarissas French Colonial, Warbases Chinese Pagoda, some dragonfiregame buildings.
-
You might find something suitable here :)

-
Thanks! That is a good start!
-
I am using the Sarissa North Africa/Colonial series.

I am hoping that they do move on to doing buildings for Vietnam (as I am not looking forward to trying to add some peaked roofs to them.
-
I second Sarissa!

Thanks for the ideas for buildings etc. Now i am thinking about vegetation .
I found some cheap Palm trees on eBay https://www.ebay.de/itm/12PCS-6-20cm-Highale-1-100-1-150-Green-Plastic-Palm-Model-Trees-HO-N-Layout/281889525054?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649
But what about elephant grass etc what would you use?

If you want to read a really good book about the Grunts in Vietnam I can highly recommend
"The Boys of ’67: Charlie Company’s War in Vietnam " by Andrew Wiest.
It is a book about Charlie Company 9th Inf Division 43rd Rgt in 1967 in the Mekong Delta.

Thanks Richard! Oh, yes it was very difficult for me to do the fag packet lol! Next time I try a lucky strike one!

Here is the next Grunt for my growing Vietnam war collection.
This time it is a figure by Gringo 40 miniatures. An afro-american ( hope that is the political correct designation) GI. These are wonderfull sculpts and are only slightly bigger then the Empress miniatures . They get along quite well so that I will mix both ranges in my american force.

I got the new North Vietnamese Army soldiers from Empress Miniatures in the post the other day. As there is not such a big variety at the moment ( there are many more to come from the talented Mr. Hicks!) I started to swop some heads on the miniatures. You can find other heads in the french indochine range of Empress.
The one in the middle is the original miniature. The one on the left and right has a new head. There is a little green stuff round the neck missing at the moment.
For close ups go to https://wargamesgazette.com/2019/08/22/an-nva-head-swap/
-
Excellent start.
-
thank you!
-
I have been thinking about doing the same, but I am not sure that I have the heart/courage to cut of the heads of those nice models.
-
it is quite easy as they more or less all wear scarfs, so cutting of the head is not that dangerous. I kept the cut of heads for other modeling needs.
-
Here is the squad leader of the 1st squad 1st platoon. A Gringo 40 figure again:

Nice
-
The Gringo figures look 'chunkier' than the Empress ones, is that the case or is it just a photographic thing?
-
Yes, they are but once painted up they work together really well!

Here is the first Marine of the 3rd fire team of my 1st squad of US marines for Vietnam.

A good start mate, keep going!
The only suggestion I’d have is that you don’t need the metallic on the M16s - on the plus side that will allow you to churn them out even quicker
:D
(https://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh72/AKULADEEP/B5D440A7-AC79-430A-A2D9-17DDCE3E5642_zpsfaszisbd.jpeg)
-
I know Akula, I probably have to make these parts darker. I just wanted to differentiate the plastic and metal parts of the M 16
-
As i have to do some terrain for my ongoing Vietnam war project. I need a lot of clump foliage for my jungle terrain, so instead of buying it I thought about doing it myself. I know someone who does upholstery as a profession and he gave me offcuts of upholstery foam.
This is the result:
You can see the complete process here: https://wargamesgazette.com/2019/08/29/making-your-own-clump-foliage-from-upholstery-foam/
-
I mixed a coarse scatter foliage to be added to my jungle terrain and to the bases of the Marines and the soon to come NVA. Made with the clump foliage I made.
Here is a picture without the foliage and with the foliage:
What do you think ? I personally think with foliage will blend the miniatures better into the terrain.

Today I will show something completely different. I finished the first miniature of the other side of the Vietnam war . Here is the first NVA Soldier. An Empress miniatures figure sculpted by Paul Hicks. I did a head swap as when I purchased the figures there were only 2 different packs available but since then the range has grown considerably and is still doing so. I painted the figure with Contrast colors by GW.

here is the first figure of the second squad of my US Marines for Vietnam. This is a very special figure. It depicts the squad sergeant of the second squad, who happens to be me.
So here is sergeant Tom . the figure got a head swop and a special paint job on the left arm . The figure is a gringo 40 figure. The head is a special sculpt by my friend Paul Hicks and depicts my features. I added a scarf round the neck to hide the joint between the body and the head. On the left upper arm I tried to paint a tattoo I happen to have there.

Super work. For latecomers like me, have you described what paints you used for the uniforms and what base colour/primer at all?

Cypher , I use Vallejo colors for the base. I will look the numbers up when I am at home tonight. The other colors are Contrast Colors by GW I look these up too.

As I started on my Vietnam war project during the summer and have finished a few miniatures now I thought it is time to start on some terrain for my games. I got a 3D printer from my wonderful wife and so the terrain making starts. I got the Anicubic Photon 3d resin printer a wonderful machine indeed.
I got an STL file of a carribian hut which fits in with the vietnamese rural landscape quite well. I printed the file and build it using superglue which worked quite well. I painted it with my airbrush and a few washings based it and added a palm tree ( available on eBay) and here it is:

Platoon is a 1986 American war film written and directed by Oliver Stone, starringFTom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Charlie Sheen, Keith David, Kevin Dillon, John C. McGinley, Forest Whitaker, and Johnny Depp. Here is my take of Staff Sergeant Robert “Bob” Barnes and Sergeant Elias. Both figures are a set from the Wargames illustrated magazine .

Good paint job. I just bought those two myself, but I thought the one in the right was the character played by Charlie sheen, Elias was Defoe was he not?
-
Love the hut. :-*
Didits,
Willem Dafoe played sergeant Elias.
Tom Berenger played staff sergeant Barnes,
Charlie Sheen played private Taylor.
-
Thanks and yes, Elias was Defoe
-
I’m confused, my bad...but who is pfc noble that WI allude to for the figure?
-
Sorry but can't tell as the figures you get are definitely the two sergeants from platoon the good and the bad guy so to speak
-
Which they call Sgt Barnes and pfc Noble. At first I thought the same as you. I like the figures however so it doesn’t matter a hoot! 😉

So back to normal after Crisis 19. Returning on Sunday I thought it might be nice starting to paint some miniatures again. I had purchased quite a lot more Vietnam war models so I will continue to ad to my collection by painting them up through this winter. By the way I bought some MDF 25mm round bases. As I always ad a magnet to them, for easy storage, how would you do that with these bases? I used plastic slota bases up to now.
Here is the NVA figure I painted ( Empress miniature by Paul Hicks)

Got myself this book to read up a bit about the specifications of the Huey for my Vietnam project. It is in german but a really good read , about 260 pages full of drawings and photos. I have got 2 1/48 Bell UH-1D birds to build. Just waiting for Empress to release helicopter crew figures.
You can get the book here: https://www.amazon.de/Bell-UH-HUEY-Robert-Busse/dp/3613041693/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_de_DE=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&keywords=Huey&qid=1574925187&sr=8-1
-
The D model is fine if you want to do US Army birds but for the Marines you really want the UH-1E. Nearest thing is the Hobby Boss UH-1C. Cheap and easy to build.
-
Thanks for the info!
-
I have got a UH-1C model as a STL file for print out! were can I find out how many troops could be carried by the UH-1E model . I suppose less then a D model could carry?
-
Found something on the net!!
Bell UH-1E Iroquois
Rotor Diameter 44 feet.
Length 42 feet, 7 inches.
Height 12 feet, 7 inches.
Empty Weight 5,055 pounds.
Max. Weight 9,500 pounds.
Powerplant 1 Lycoming T53-L-11 turbine rate at 1100 hp.
Crew 1 pilot, 10 passengers.
Max Speed 161 mph.
Thats only 4 less then a 1D could carry on paper . Is that reasonable? I know it depends on the amount of fuel the ship would carry and weather conditions but as a rule of thumb?

Hmmm. I crew ,10 passengers? Well, I suppose if you consider the co-pilot and the crew chief as passengers. By that rationale, the UH-1D comes down to an upper load of 11 seated passengers when you factor in co-pilot (almost invariably the case) a crew chief/ door gunner and additional gunner and the D was a much bigger bird.
The UH-1 E was basically an aluminium version of the B and C model Hueys. The first ones were based on the B model, later they used the C. The B had an uppermost seated capacity of seven passengers. The C had a more powerful engine but no increase in cabin size or AFAIK seats.
I suspect the Marine E models had no increase over the B in terms of passenger lift. I’ll check that though.
At any rate the E model wasn’t primarily utilised as a lift ship. Its designated role was primarily command and control and recce, although they were heavily used as gunships. Their over use in the armed role detracted from their principle role and became something of an issue to the Marines, an issue that wasn’t solved until the Marines started receiving early model AH-1 gunships and OV-10 Broncos from around 1969 onward.
-
Thanks for the info. So probably a fireteam ( 4 soldiers) per bird?!
-
Here are a few pictures of my started jungle terrain for my Vietnam war project. I know that the color of the soil in Vietnam is a lot more red than my soil color but I wanted to be able to use my other terrain tiles with this project so to let them be used together I had to use the color I used on my older stuff ,too.
I got inspiration and a how to from the terrain tutor over on youtube .

Great start with that jungle. I wouldn’t fret over the dirt colour either. Depending on rainfall, the colour would go from a darker red following rains to a lighter dust if it hadn’t rained for a few days. I also wanted my terrain to mix in with other projects so there is very little red in mine at all.
-
It varies across the country too. It’s not all laterite clay.
-
Looking good. I like the rocks. ;)
-
The rocks are made from cork bark. I did them ages ago and I didn't want to do new ones for this project. There is so much else to do so have to save some time.
Here is the next painted NVA soldier:
I painted this NVA soldier in an overall green uniform as some people said that there were no Kaki NVA soldiers uniforms. To my knowledge that is not true. I read kaki descriptions of NVA uniforms in many different books. I personally think Kaki and green together looks best.

I started to do some jungle terrain for my Vietnam games. What I missed so far are areas of Elefant Grass. While searching the web for an idea to represent Elefant grass in 28mm I came across artificial grass for gardens. you can find this as test pieces in gardening shops or online. The sample I got is about 2cm high. I started out to do some test pieces on 25 mm round MDF bases I happened to have available.
This is what they look like:
and together with the rest of my jungle, can you spot charly?
You can see a how to here:https://wargamesgazette.com/2019/12/09/elefant-grass/
-
That will be a good looking board!
-
I use that stuff. You can get if for free from the shops who sell it as sample sections. All shapes and sizes.
-
Or you can be a silly bugger like me and buy a few metres worth from Bunnings. :( It does look good though.

Got this book today
(https://wargamesgazette.files.wordpress.com/2019/12/img_4131.jpg)
Weapons and Field Gear of the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong by Edward J. Emering is a book about field gear and inert weapons and ordnance, that have long been popular items with militaria collectors. The Vietnam War by its very nature offers an incredible range and variety of these items for the interested collector. The North Vietnamese and their puppet troops of the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong or VC) relied primarily on communist allies (Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba and various Eastern Bloc countries of the era) for their weapons and field gear. For this reason, Vietnam represents a microcosm of gear from all of this century’s wars, dating back to World War I,
It is a tome of knowledge for people who want to paint NVA and Viet Cong soldier miniatures like the ones offered by Empress miniatures or Gringo 40. It has a wealth of information and color pictures of equipment and uniforms as you can see here:

Arrived yesterday and I agree its highly recommended. Some great photographs that I have not seen before and the small size of the Vietnamese really shows in some of them.
Good find Tom ;)

after a longer xmas and new years break, I got a pla printer for xmas more of that later, I started painting again . Here is the next figure:
As you can see I added some elefantgrass to the base. These were offcuts of the artificial grass mat I used
to do elegant grass with for my jungle terrain. More here:https://wargamesgazette.com/2020/01/14/more-nathaniel-victor/

More danger in the jungle, at least for the US Marines . One more NVA Soldier. Only 6 more and I finished all the figures I got during the first release of these figures in summer 19. I am a slow painter I know.

As a break from painting miniatures and as I like building terrain as much as painting miniatures, I started to do some more terrain for my Vietnam gaming table. I decided that my jungle wasn’t dense enough so there have to be more jungle scatter pieces. There were only a few palm trees so there have to be done some more. But most important I wanted to do some bigger elephant grass patches and a landingzonye for my choppers.
The elephant grass test piece was done by glueing pieces of artificial grass to a plastic base , adding filler round the edges of the grass to blend it all in , adding sand and scatter and of course paint.
So this looks like a small path through the grass doesn’t it?
Next up my LZ ( landing zone) done like the elephant grass with a wider central free space for the choppers to land in

Super, that grass looks fantastic.

That grass looks great!

Indeed. Love that stuff. Excellent terrain. You can't go wrong with that. ;-)

Thanks gents!
here is another addition to my NVA army. I know that the Vietnamese figures from Empress depict NVA and not VC. But i thought after weeks on the Ho Chi Min trail the original uniform might have been unserviceable and the soldiers would wear what ever they could find. So I painted the clothes in the black color of the VC fighters. After all they might have provided their brother NVA after there long trek south. So here he is a NVA soldier in the traditional VC black. Painted mainly in GW contrast colors.

Next up will be a couple of Bell UH-1C choppers for my Marines! More at https://wargamesgazette.com/2020/01/30/another-charlie-in-the-bush/
-
Looking good. ;)

What is Vietnam wargaming without the iconic helicopters the US forces were using there. After painting up some Marines and NVA, VC figures I thought it would be time to build some choppers. The Marines used the UH-1C and the Sikorsky H34 during the first years of the conflict . I start with the UH-1C.
As I got two 3d printers a resin and a filament printer I tried to print a Huey on both of them and wanted to find out which printer would do the better job.
Here are pictures of the filament printed Huey:
As you can see you can see the printing lines quite clearly. I didn’t like that very much and they would have shown after painting even more. So I printed one in resin:
I like that one much more. So I will work with the resin printed ones. I started printing a second one and built a flight stand out of an old car antenna:
The chopper will be attached with a magnet. More pictures at https://wargamesgazette.com/2020/02/04/the-bell-uh-1c-huey/

I starrtet to paint the 2 Hueys I printed. One as a medevac/dustoff chopper the other as a slick.

As you can see I used white decal paper. Not a good choice for the letters in “MARINE” as I have to pint in the proper background again ,but i had no clear decal paper available. Have to order some more. But for the other decals it worked quite nicely.

I like your Hueys.
When I saw it before it was painted,
I did not think it looked so good.
But painted, it turned out great.
Hats off to your painting skills. :)

Thanks Marine!
Here is a little update:
I did the main rotors and added some filters and dirt. The only thing missing now is a bit chipped paint here and there and a bit of gloss varnish on the windows.

As the paint on the flight stand and the Hueys isn’t dry jet I thought I show you pictures of the next project. A vietnamese hut for a jungle village. As I got a 3D printer for x was I thought to use it to print a hut for my jungle terrain. Or a complete village? Not sure jet.
As I didn’t find an appropriate STL online I designed the hut myself using tinkercad.
Here are the pieces I designed:

Is that file going to be available? It looks good.
Yep, what he said. And I am wondering about legs being added for a jungle hut.

Printable Scenery's Caribbean shack is useful for this as well.
Yep, what he said. And I am wondering about legs being added for a jungle hut.
-
Yes, I have another version in the pipeline with legs. I just wanted a few different ones for my village.
I have the caribbean shack, too. It can be used for Vietnam ,too ,at least that is what I do. It is quite a bit smaller though.
-
Oh, sorry forgot to answer the other question . I will probably upload files to Wargaming 3D . But first I will do some more buildings. The city of Hue will be next after the village is finished.

The same hut as I have shown you previously, just raised from the ground, as many of the jungle huts ,you can see on historic pictures, were.

Your Hueys came out great.
I wish I had painted the windows on my helos,
hides the fact there are no pilots with the model.
Or saves some time by not painting them,
if the model came with them.
Smart idea.
-
Looking good (and, yes, another one on the list for Mr Hicks methinks :D).
-
Very nice.
-
That's very impressive. ;)
Yes we will do crew. Problem is do we have a pack of pilots and a pack of gunners so people can choose?
One really easy way to do windows and vehicle windscreens that the chap at Cromwell Models showed me many years ago was to colour them in with a pencil. You get the right depth of shiny blackness and its really easy to do ;)
-
Paul,
Interesting idea about using pencil.
Do you put the pencil colour on the inside or outside of the window?
-
I think splitting the crews might be a good idea as there are so many different Huey model out there.
The penciled in windows would interest me too.
-
I was asked which rules I would use for my Vietnam wargaming. I decided to give the “One-Hour skirmish wargames” rules by John Lambshead a try.
The game is a true one figure is one soldier game. Meaning the smallest maneuver unit is not a platoon or squad but a single soldier. The game doesn’t use dice but ordinary playing cards ( think poker) to introduce randomness .

I am liking your crashed Huey. I have a cheap 1/48 model kit Huey unmade that might get a similar treatment.
-
Nice work. In your blog to mentioned the Instar Alpha paint range are similar to contrast paints. They have the same ink/wash like properties as the contrast paint line? Do you like them better than the contrast line?
-
Syrinx0 I like them like the contrast paints. Difference is that the Instar Alphas have much more pigment in them and you can use them like normal paints on a white base coat. It gives a very smooth very thin layer then. Or you can thin them with there medium which is called Water + . At least 1/1 or even thinner if you like. Hope that helps.

When you read about the Vietnam war or watch documentaries or movies about the conflict, you see or read about colored smoke for designating LZ or friendly lines to allow fast movers or gunships to work the enemy position. of course a Prick 25 operator. This is a Empress miniatures US Marine figure sculpted by Paul Hicks. He is carrying a PRC 25 aVHF transceiver on his back. I made the antenna out of a plastic broom “hair” as I am clumsy and fears to brake the included metal one when gaming.

I got some plastic Bamboo from China. Bought it through e bay quite cheap. Don’t fear I bought it before the onset of COVID 19. So no space on an aircraft was waisted which could have been used for facemasks.
I quite like it, but is it to tall? Should I have it halved in hight?

I have that same bamboo. Although real life bamboo can be huge I halved mine for easier access to miniatures. And to double my bamboo forest.
-
will do the same with the rest I have.
-
Here is the next NVA soldier . The first figure of the miniatures I bought at Crisis 19 in Antwerp. He is another Empress miniature. I painted him wearing a black pair of trousers ( you need new ones after a while on the Ho Chi Min trail) and a traditional blue and white Vietnamese scarf.

For my Vietnam war collection I needed some Sampans. I printed these in 3D and painted them up. Now my river doesn’t look so empty anymore.

This looks as a very fast painting method!

The Sampans were done in a base coat and a few dry brushes.

As it is beginning to get boring only to paint NVA, I still have a lot to do, I sprinkle in the occasional US Marine. So today a Marine with a “pig” (M60).

Good Morning. So the Salute weekend is gone by without Salute… more time for painting though. I painted up this blooper gunner from Empress. Very nice sculpt by Paul Hicks.

If you say so, that's good enough for me! I will probably do a couple in that colour too now :D

Vodkafan, I think the book is trustworthy , there are no replicas pictured inside just original collectors items.

Vietnam landscape without water buffalo ? As these animals can be found almost everywhere in Vietnam I needed some for my Vietnam war gaming table. The standing ones are from Empress miniatures the resting ones are 3D printed as is the chicken.

This US Marine figure is Gunny Sergeant Frank Thomas who carried the Stars and Stripes in Hue and is seen getting it from inside his flak jacket. I painted the figure a bit different. The flag he is getting out of his flack jacket is painted to represent a map so the figure could be used in different settings ,too.

Above you see the river I build for my gaming table a wile ago. Now that there will be brown water navy boats available in the near future, at least after the Corona lockdown is lifted, I thought that I would need a wider river to accommodate 28mm boats. I have a modular gaming table layout with extruded polystyrene squares for variety. The approach to the new waterway is a different one. I have a gaming mat permanently beneath the styrene squares which is used for naval wargaming. I thought about just building “shore” tiles and use the gaming mat as the river surface. In that way i can have the river as big as I like or I could even build a shoreline for amphibious landing games. Here is the result:

Here is the next figure or better group of figures for my US Marines in Vietnam. This is more like a little diorama as I placed two figures on one base. it is a radioman and an NCO using the radio. So they are connected by the Radio handset line and i couldn’t find a way to base them separately. At least convincingly.
First the NCO:

May I ask you if the colored spots on the helmets are the real colors you intended as camo cover, or is it the light that makes it so bright ?
-
Great looking project!
I don't want to be "that guy" but the one hour skirmish wargames rules you have slightly wrong. (I only noticed as it was you that put me onto them).
The suits for the cards only applies when the value is a draw.
(for example a 8 clubs is higher than 7 spades).
And shooting ends a models activation so models and shoot multiple times in a player phase.
Sorry.
Like I said project looks amazing the painting subject models everything.

Private Leonard “Gomer Pyle” Lawrence
(https://wargamesgazette.files.wordpress.com/2020/05/img_5550.jpg?w=357&h=343&zoom=2)
In the first part of the movie Full Metal Jacket, the recruits graduate and receive their Military Occupational Specialty assignments. Pyle is assigned to Infantry. During the platoon’s final night on Parris Island, Joker discovers Pyle in the head loading his rifle and executing drill commands, and loudly recites the Rifleman’s Creed. This awakens the platoon and drill sergeant Hartman, who confronts Pyle and orders him to surrender the rifle. Pyle shoots Hartman dead and then commits suicide, while Joker helplessly watches in horror. The figure above is an Empress miniature cast for a different story line. Empress assume Pyle doesn’t shoot Hartman and doesn’t commit suicide and in doing so reaches the NAM as an M60 gunner.

This is all really great stuff, I have a question about the miniatures though.
I'm planning on getting some from Empress soon, I've noticed they seem to have a thin metal base on them, is that already attached? I wan't to give them the usual round bases my other people will have.
Thanks.
-
Buildings look great! I need to upgrade and silence my ender 5 so I can do overnight prints.
@TripleBackFlip, they do have integral metal bases, just trim them down with snips and superglue them down to the bases you want to use. Just use a bit of ready mixed household filler to blend them in it you don't want a visible 'step' on the base :)
-
What Cypher said . The bases are very easy to blend in, or if you really have to get rid of them a belt sander might work.

If you have access to Warlord lipped bases, they will bed nicely in.

Great figures again, I'm going to have to have a go at these contrast paints, I bought a bottle of the contrast medium to see if it works with Vallejo paint.

It does work but you only need a very tiny amount of Vallejo color in the mix.

Looking good.

Nice work! It's amazing how well the camo blends in with the elephant grass.
Coincidentally, I've just finished rereading Michael Hodgins' book Reluctant Warrior. It seems to be a great first-hand source on Marine Recon scenarios and tactics:

Here is an US Marine armed with a M72 LAW . The M72 LAW (Light Anti-Tank Weapon, also referred to as the Light Anti-Armor Weapon or LAW as well as LAWS: Light Anti-Armor Weapons System) is a portable one-shot 66-mm unguided anti-tank weapon.

The RPG-2 (Russian: РПГ-2, Ручной противотанковый гранатомёт, Ruchnoy Protivotankovy Granatomyot; English: “hand-held antitank grenade launcher”) is a man-portable, shoulder-fired anti-tank weapon that was designed in the Soviet Union and used by the NVA and Viet Cong quite often.
There is again a secondary weapon sculpted on the figure wich makes it very useful for small one on one skirmish games.

I got a Sikorsky H-34 model by Trumpeter for my Vietnam war Project. I want to use the Empress miniatures new pilot figures with the above model. The model is in 1/48 scale and fits quite nicely with the Empress Miniatures. The M60 included in the model is exactly as big as the one used on the Empress figures.
Now my problem. The pilot figures seem to be not fitting properly.
As you can see the hight works but somehow the cockpit is to long . If I sit the figures back in the seat to lean against the backrest they can’t reach the pedals or the stick. What would you do?
More pictures at https://wargamesgazette.com/2020/09/03/sikorsky-h-34/
-
EDITED after I looked at the link.
It is probably easier and less visible to shorten the plastic seat bottom, than try to rework the metal figure.
I suggest that you attach the joystick to the pilots hand and cut the seat in the middle to shorten it by about 1.5 mm.
Then the figure should look OK when viewed through the windows.
Mick

Thanks Paul!
Today something completely different.
As I have build new riverbanks for my wargaming terrain I needed a bridge to cross the river. First of all I needed banks for the bridge. I build theses, as I build all my terrain tiles, from extruded polystyrene sheets. The bricks are engraved into the polystyrene. I added sand and gravel painted the banks and added self-made flocking material.
The Bridge itself is 3D printed the file is from a WOW Kickstarter. You can find links to the used stl files and many more pictures of the build here: https://wargamesgazette.com/2020/09/30/a-bridge-over-a-river/

Nice work, as always! They seem to be missing some crew members, though, because that HMG would be a lot for just of the two of them to carry.

The Sikorsky H 34 chopper
I wanted to have this iconic chopper for my Vietnam war collection and so i bought the above pictured Trumpeter model in 1/48. I wanted to use the new pilot miniatures from Empress Miniatures for this model. Normally the scale 1/48 isn’t that far of and usable with 28mm figures as you can see here:

The helicopter looks very good. :-*
How did you resolve the problem with the crew fitting to the cockpit seats?
-
I just made the legs about 3m longer. I cut them at the knees, drilled a few holes inserted some wire and rescue-ted the trousers . Did the job for me.
-
Paul I have another one of these as well but next up will be a italery UH 1 D in 1/48.

As I can be a very impatient guy I tried out a different. Miniature manufacturer. I have completed quite a table full of Vietnam terrain but have no inhabitants so I didn’t want to wait until Empress Miniatures brings out civilians in their Vietnam war range and bought some from Full Metal Miniatures. Don’t get me wrong, you can never have to many civilians, so i will buy the Empress ones, too when they are avalable .
As you can see the figure hight is comparable, the Full Metal Miniature in the centre of the picture is just a bit chunkier. For me it is a close enough fit to use miniatures of both brands on the same table.

Thought this might be news worth sharing:
Rubicon writes on facebook: Our “New Project of the Month” for December 2020… the Bell UH-1 Iroquois “Huey”. Another FIRST for Rubicon Models – something that is airborne! This will be a multi-sprue plastic kit in 1/56 scale covering the UH-1D and UH-1H variant. Final features are not confirmed but will include full interior, stretcher variant, and multiple weapon system support. That sounds really good and the renders look really promising:

Oh was about to hop on and post it. Here's the thing I saw with some preliminary box art.

Rubicon are really testing my decision to go for Empress vehicles (evidence so far seems to suggest a decent range is in the offing).
I wonder if I can get away with 1/56 for helis (might look better when flying across the table in a slightly smaller scale) and the corgi choppers have gotten expensive these days...?
-
I will definitely give them a try

If not serviceable with the Empress figures, I suppose they can still make for great crashed objective markers. Rather than having to trash a Corgi one for it.
@tomrommel1: Great job on the porter!

Now As I got a 3D printer last year and I acquired some STL files for smoke effects like missile exhaust , explosions etc from Deadly Print Studio I tried there smoke marker STL . If you build a city you need some groundwork to place it on. As my terrain tiles are all grassland and not suited for a build up environment. I started building thin overlays as ground for the city/village. I will build streets running over the rest of the terrain in a similar way later. I uses PVC sign makers tiles for this.As the tiles are very thin( but not warping) you can take them with you to other locations quite easily. As you can see on the picture. The setup is on our dining room table and not on my usual gaming table in the basement. This could be a nice lockdown project as you get everything you need on the net.

-
Probably one of those whisper thin Ronald Colman type ‘taches. Easy to miss at a distance. :)
By the by, no ‘fire teams’ per se in God’s own army not back then anyway. Groups. Gun group, rifle group, scouts. Two JNCOs. Corporal section commander who usually moves with the rifles and scouts in the assault and a lance jack in charge of the gun group. The rifles and scouts might move independently, with the section commander moving with the scouts or they might move as one group or they might pepper pot by odds and evens in the final stages of an assault. The gun group in a section attack is almost invariably a seperate entity under the command of the section 2IC as it lays down the base of fire. That’s the theory anyway.
-
Thanks for the info Carlos! I am not the expert on ANZAC platoon structure. So groups it is then instead. Will stick by the four figures anyway as thats the way I paint ( always working with 4 miniatures at a time).

Great look help.
-
Nicely done!
Just a tip. Those crossbelty looking things on the gunner and his number two are actually the vinyl inners from the blow up sleeping mattress. They cut them open and used them to carry the link for the gun. Less shiny brass on show and it helped keep the ammo cleaner. They should be black.
If you want some variety, you can paint some of the toggle ropes a mid to darkish green. The nylon version was coming into to service around that time.
-
We opened the inner seams and used them instead of the sleeping bag. You woke up damp but you didn't have the weight of the sleeping bag.

Yeah, as designed it was a pretty ordinary bit of kit. Whoever designed it didn’t think of the tactical considerations of blowing it up, deflating the bloody thing and stowing it in a pack. The horse blanket and silk combo was a much better idea, as was wrapping yourself in the hutchi.
I can remember falling asleep one night and dreaming about having a warm shower. I woke up and thought,’ fuck! it’s raining’ and then thought ‘that’s nice, someone has erected the hutchi’ as I could see it above me.
I was still contemplating how they had achieved that particular feat when I realised that I had actually slid down into the green plastic cocoon, as we were camped on the side of a hill and my breath had condensed onto the plastic above and was dripping on to my face. lol

Great story carlos.
Made me laugh. :)
-
Nice painting.
-
Thanks for the tip Carlos, will use the info on the next models.
Now for something completely different....
A three wheel Lambretta
As I am slowly working on my cityscape of Hue, for the Tet 1968 offensive, I needed some of these vehicles. The three wheelers were and are often seen in Vietnam. As taxi, bus or van stand in. I got a 3D file from Thingiverse for a 3 wheeler Lambretta bus. This was printed with my Photon resin printer and then painted in the usual manner. I tried the weathering pencils from AK interactive for the rust effect. I think it works quite well.
Many more pictures at: https://wargamesgazette.com/2021/03/10/a-three-wheel-lambretta/
-
Did you have to rescale the 3D print file? And which file, if I may ask?
-
I printed it out as is and I got it from thingyverse search term I used was Lambretta. Hope that helps.
-
Does indeed, search underway as I type.
-
And their dodgy search engine fails yet again.
-
Sorry for that! I could look if i find the file. If interested send me a PM
-
Here is another Lambretta again 3D printed. This one wasn’t printed correctly. The roof above the passenger compartment was partially missing. So I removed it completely and loaded the Lambretta with things to be delivered to a market.

Sorry the Lambretta is not from thingiverse but from Wargaming 3D . Have a look here : https://www.wargaming3d.com/product/three-wheeler-bus/?fbclid=IwAR1qIgUFndDEp2l-77wRqvundmgwcSzykALeKJPcTgs7TAApkTVJEAJGuTY
-
As I build the two Lambrettas, I needed something like a Lambretta workshop for my city of Hue project. So I scratch build this workshop out of extruded polystyrene , coffee stirrers and cardboard. The oil drums, tires etc are 3D printed and the tin roof is made with a device from green stuff world, which turns ordinary cardboard into corrugated cardboard.

@Tom,
What type of printer do you have - FDM or SLA?
-
It’s a great little scene Tom :)
-
Nice.
-
Thanks Gents, Mick I have a photon and an I3Mega both from Anycubic. The Lambrettas were done on the Photon (SLA) the oil drums tires etc were done on the I3 Mega (FDM).

Here is the first figure of the 3rd rifle group. When i finish this rifle group, hopefully until the end of this week, my first digger section will be ready for battle.

Here is the next Digger. this time armed with a M16. A very nice figure, having that late 60th early 70 feeling with the appropriate facial hair.

he looks very good - well done :-*

Thanks Mick
-
Nice work (and 'tache).
For those of us who vaguely remember the concept, before "one thing and the other", I was amused by a local barber offering an SAS haircut - no mention of the matching facial hair.
-
Thanks Gents! The next one is without a hairy upper lip ;)

-
Nice!
-
Nice work! Looks like that section is missing its gun and has a couple too many M16s and Owens.
If it helps, the section organisation is.
Section Commander (Cpl) M16/Owen
Scout Group.
No 1 Scout M16/Owen
No 2 Scout SLR
Gun group:
Section 2IC (Lcpl) SLR
Machine Gunner M60
MG No2 SLR
Rifle Group:
No1 Rifleman SLR + M79
Nos, 2,3, 4 Riflemen with SLR.
That’s the book org. Frequently less in a section and typically the rifle group gets docked before the other groups.
-
Thanks Carlos
-
Carlos Do you have info about platoon and company orbats ?
-
Yep.
Platoon is PHQ plus 3x Sections.
PHQ is:
Platoon Commander typically an M16
Platoon Sgt SLR
Signaller/ orderly PRC-25 and an SLR
Batman/Runner SLR.
The rifle company is CHQ plus 3 x platoons.
The relevant bits of CHQ, ie those that would be would be in the field on ops would consist of a command party with the OC, the CSM, at least two batmen/signallers and a medic. CHQ was bigger than that but usually the CQMS, the drivers, storemen and attached cooks would be a rear party at the battalion’s base of operations. Beyond that there would almost invariably be an FO party of an FO, plus his own signaller (seperate radio netted into the battery/ regiment in support). In general terms, officers carry the M16 or Owen and SNCOs and ORs an SLR.
There was also the support section, which was intended to provide anti-armour capability to the company via 2x 84mm Carl Gustav MAWs. These were not deployed on operations in Vietnam so the support section, which consisted of a corporal and five men would often be used as a close protection party for CHQ or as a reserve. According to the book, an M16 or Owen for the section commander and the rest with rifles although at various times, some battalions tricked out the support section with a spare M60 or two.
At CHQ you might also find a Mortar Fire Control party of a Cpl and his signaller. Another common attachment would be a two man Splinter Team or Mini Team consisting of a junior NCO and a sapper from the Royal Australian Engineers. If they were equipped for general engineering tasks like bunker search and demolition they would be designated as a ‘Splinter Team’. For mine detection they would be called a ‘Mini Team’. In the latter case they would carry a mine detector and usually wore tin hats and flak jackets.
By the by, around the end of 1966 the Owen gun essentially disappears and is replaced by the M16.
Hope that helps.
-
Thanks Carlos! That helps indeed as in my prefer rules set ( The Nam, as it was) the ANZAC troops are in a supplement which isn't published jet.
-
Yes, thanks Carlos for the organisation info.
Nice painting Tom.
-
Thanks Ultrananillasmurf!
Over a year ago I printed a Huey with my 3d resin printer. Alas I didn’t have any door gunners. Now I got a few door gunners from Empress miniatures, sculpted by Paul Hicks.

I thought I would need some targets for the SEALs and MACV SOG troops. So I got myself a few of the russian trucks from Rubicon, as these were used by the NVA, too. You can build the truck either as GAZ-AA or GAZ-AAA version. I build the GAZ-AA version. There is a driver for the cab included. So he had to be turned into a more Vietnamese looking type.
The finished truck:
But is this really just a truck transporting Rice or Ammo down the Ho Chi Min trail? Or is there something more dangerous on the flatbed ? More dangerous for gunships, FACs or fast movers? If you get rid of the tarp….

Great idea! :D
-
Nice work! There is a photo in Plaster's book Secret Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines with the Elite Warriors of SOG (2004) of what looks like a BTR 40 draped with abundant foliage on patrol along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Apparently, foliage was commonly used by the PAVN when travelling along the trail - stationary troops resembled bushes from the air!
-
So I should think about adding some foliage to the truck.

A few weeks back Empress Miniatures released their Vietnam civilian range and a corresponding VC range. So you never know in your games if it is just someone from the next village or a VC… This makes it much easier to stage a guerrilla war on the tabletop. So here is the first set:

Another civilian miniature. This time a female one. She is carrying an upturned wicker hat draped with a piece of cloth. This was very typical for carrying goods. So after leaving the goods purchased on the market she goes to the weapons cache to do some hunting…..

He is wearing a Levis jeans as many of the Seals in Vietnam did.

But I'm sure that little old lady was just protecting her rice paddy from rats...

Thanks! and yes of corse she only wanted to get rid of all the rats in the field.....

Here is the next vietnamese civillian figure. He is dressed in a bit better clothes . So I thought he might be the son of the village chief. Or he might be a leader of a unit of Viet Cong

Nice looking minis - really like the idea of armed/unarmed versions
8)
-
Yes it is nice to have a civilian who can be turned into a VC . As I intend to use "The Nam" as rules set. You could even use a special activation to turn the civilian into a VC so you don#t know in advance when he will get himself armed...
-
The look an that guy's face (to me...) says "Oh for crying out loud. Them again?" :D
Nice paint job, BTW...
-
Thanks!
She is on her way back home after a long day in the family rice paddys. Or is she on her way to join the other VC of the village tonight?

Thanks gents!
Now for something different. I got a 3D file of the tank through a kickstarter ( 3D printable US Vehicles of the Vietnam War: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bm3d/3d-printable-us-vehicles-of-the-vietnam-war-for-wargames ). This was printed on my Anycubic photon resin printer and i must say the files are really worth every penny I paid!

Great model.
Was not happy when it came in 1/56 and not in 1/50 or 1/48.
Also would like to see a M-41 and M-42.
Oh, well.
-
@Marine0846
I have the same files from the kick starter and I printed them at 1/50 scale so now. They are easy to rescale when you have a 3D printer.
-
Mick_in_ Switzerland
Thanks for the heads up.
-
The model you see in the picture is rescaled to 1/50 too. Forgot to mention.
-
That looks great.
How tech savy does one need to be in order to operate a Anycubic photon printer? I am seriously considering getting one. But I am a bit afraid that it might end up in a lot of tears, cusswords and gnashing of teeth.
-
First of all there is a learning curve envolved. But it is really no problem. You ave to learn to work with the prgramms you need to get the stl file into a file readable by the photon. These programs are called slicers. You get thenm from Anycubic for free or from third parties.
so all in all you don#t have to be a tech neerd. I never regretted getting a printer.
-
@Dr Zombie,
I made notes about my learning to use an Anycubic Photon. These will feature in a book one day.
If you (or anybody else) want to have a preview copy of the 3d Print section, just PM me with your email address.
Best Regards
Mick

That would be great. PM sent.

Thanks Gents,

It happens to us all.
Look forward to seeing what you come up with next :)
-
Take your time - your Vietnam painting mojo will come back.
Your friends at LAF will be here when it does. ;)
-
Yup. One does what one can when one feels like it. I imagine we've all been there...
-
Do not force it, just wait until inspiration returns.
-
Thanks guys!

So back with the brushes and paints. I started doing some hobby stuff again. First of i finished a few figures I had on the painting desk. The first is another VC with a head swap. On the right is the converted figure on the left the original. Both head and figure are from Empress

Nice work on those head swops, your collection must be a really decent size now
:)

Akula, yes it is quite big. I have a platoon of US Marines, one of NVA and am working on one VC platoon. Ihave 3 choppers and a few other vehicles, but they are not completely finished. Further up in the pipeline is a platoon of ARVN.
So enough to do ....
-
Nice clean head swap, good skills.
-
Thanks!
-
That is a good head swap.
-
Yep, sure is! Head transplants can be tricky...you seem to have managed it nicely...

Thank you all!

Another head swop done. This figure is armed with a RPG and a AK 47. The original figure on the left next to the kitbashed one.

Another RPG armed VC or NVA soldier. After a longer brake, due to work constrains, I have started painting again. I also started with a bigger gaming project of a campaign of patroling in the Nam. More on this in the future.

Thank you all.

Last weekend I finished some scatter terrain pieces to be used as swamp area. I am building up the last missing terrain pieces for a campaign game set during the Vietnam war, north of the parrots beak area. This area of Vietnam was a large swamp and abandoned rice paddy area near the border to Cambodia. So an infiltration point for the NVA and VC. But back to the terrain pieces. I want to depict the swamp as individual scatter terrain to be able to have different pathways through the swamp. The whole area will hinder movement due to being difficult terrain.

Here is my latest painting effort. Painted with GWs contrast paints. The figures are from Empress Miniatures sculpted by Paul Hicks. A lovely little viginette.

Here is the first part of the mortar team moving the mortar to a new emplacement. The figure is humping the base plate and tube of the mortar.

Your dedication to this project is admirable Tom. Just goes to show how you can build up a tremendous collection doing just a little bit at a time 8)

Thanks Richard

indeed he will have.

After a longer brake from modeling and painting. I could start a new project over the x-mas holidays. A LVPT5. The model was printed on my resin printer in 1/50 scale. The figures are from Empress.
Here is the printed model:
And a picture of the finished model before painting. The sandbags are made from green stuff, the c ration boxes, bags and ammo boxes are resin prints.
And the vehicle with added basecolors.
The miniatures will be painted with GWs contrast paints the rest will be done the traditional way….

As I was kicked out of the build something contest I can show you some more pictures. These are two terrain pieces roughly 40x80cm big. They fit against each other to form a 80x80cm terrain piece.
The Sandbags and other parafrenalia are 3d printed on a resin printer. The rest is scratchbuild. The roofs of the bunkers can be lifted up to place miniatures inside.

This time it took quite long until I could find time to write this post. That doesn’t mean that I did no modeling or painting in the meantime. I just couldn’t find the time to take pictures of the finished projects.
So here is the first finished project I had time to take pictures of. The 3D printed LVPT5. I printed the vehicle on my resin printer. You can find out more here: https://wargamesgazette.com/2022/01/16/the-start-of-my-lvpt5/
So here it is in all its glory. The crew is by Empress Miniatures.

Sometime last year I bought some of the ,then new, Empress ARVN Infantry figures. Now I finished the first squad of them. We’ll see how they perform on the gaming table later.

Nice work on those ARVN. Well done. I like the guy firing his M16 over the bush. The good ol' "spray and pray" technique... :D
-
Coming on nicely
-
Thanks gents!
-
They look good - well done.
-
Indeed, those are rather good!
-
Great job on the ARVN :)
-
Great looking batch of ARVAN.

Thanks again!

I got the wonderfull 3D STLs from BobMack for the Vietnam war. There are nearly all versions of the M113 included. I printed the M113 with my resin printer and enlarged it to 1/50 to fit in with my other vehicles from Empress Miniatures. the crew and Infantry figures are by Empress, sculpted by Paul Hicks.
I tried out the weathering pencils by AK. I am more at home with their pigments . i think I will stick with them and give this model a good dusting in the future as weathering at the moment is rubish.

Hello all,
I have been quiet on this threrad for much to long. But real life came in between. We had a rather bad start into 2023. Many illnesses and one death in the family just brought my hobby time down. The only thing I managed was to take part in the build something contest.
But now I am back in the saddle, here is the first of many additions to come. An armored Ford Mud. The vehicle is 3 D printed the crew is from Empress.
-
Very nice. Great choice for the bloke in the back.
-
Nice work.
-
Yup glad you are getting back to it. Good model matey.
-
Yes, looking good!
-
Thanks
-
Good looking Mutt!
-
Here is the next one this time an unarmored version. The crew is made up with Rubicon miniatures from the US Marines box. Now for a little question who is drinking beer on a mission?
-
...Now for a little question who is drinking beer on a mission?
They're on their way to the motor pool. They owe their maintenance section that case of beer for getting one of their tracks unstuck....
Another nice little Mutt, by the way. Although we never called 'em mutts. Always called 'em Jeeps....
-
Great work on those Mutts :)
-
"Now for a little question who is drinking beer on a mission?"
Well I used to know a CQMS who could drink a slab (24 X 375 ml cans) of beer in a night. We used to find him asleep on a little fold-out camp stretcher in the Sergeants' Mess with all the evidence around him. He was definitely drinking like he was on a mission. I ran in to him a few years later. He was collecting super market trolleys. As a further tie-in, he was a Vietnam veteran.
Nicely done that MUTT. Just knocked off one of the new A2 versions from Eureka miniatures. Absolute gem of a model .

Thanks Gents

I've started working my way back through your posts, your collection and work is outstanding. Your dedication is second to none. :o
