Title: Lion Gate of Mycenae
Post by: Vongoosewink on July 11, 2019, 07:34:44 PM
Here’s a new little project I’ve been working on for my WarGods Mycenaeans (to go against my Trojans).  After my extensive Walls of Troy project, I wanted to make a home-base that was a little smaller and easier to manage.  I chose the famous Lion Gate of Mycenae, and the idea is to make a small scenic piece that can sit in the corner of a game table, suggesting the scene... a battle an the plain of Argos, with the citadel of Mycenae looming in the background.

Happily, most of the historic Lion Gate still exists, and I was able to find some great photos on the web.  the faces of the Guardian lion statues are no longer there, so I had to imagine what they would have looked like... close inspection of photos of the ruin show some small peg-holes where the head should be, suggesting that they were originally separate pieces, perhaps even made of metal - bronze or gold. I experimented with the heads facing each other, but they looked better facing out, as if gazing at the viewer as they approach the gate.

I made the pediment from a some Beezputty. And had my friends from Model Earth cast me several - this piece is available to purchase, if you guys want to try your hand at making a gate yourself! You can get one here:

http://www.modelearthterrain.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Ancient-Cat.pdf (http://www.modelearthterrain.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Ancient-Cat.pdf)

The base base made with MDF board, and the the walls are 2-inch insulation foam, with a sheet of 1/4inch plywood stuck to the front that will serve at the battlements - I cut the wave crenelations with a jigsaw, and added a layer of stonework with more cut foam.  The Lion Gate pediment sculpture was slightly recessed into the stone, and I took care to make the actual stones around it and the gateway match the historical site. The cliff, road, and mud- rich crenelations were textured with sand over wood glue.  everything was then painted with a variety of earth tones and grays for the stone.

The completed  photos feature WarGods of Olympus Mycenaeans and the Titans Overlord.

Hope you guys like it!  It is currently on display the the Croc Games booth at Historicon, if you are in town come by and see it!

From what I recall seeing of other Mycenaen artwork, I think you made the right choice with the lion heads facing out.  Impressive bit of modeling.

The long toll of the brave
Is not lost in darkness
Over the fruitful earth
And athwart the seas
Hath passed the light of noble deeds
Unquenchable forever.

Did you Trojan walls and buildings ever get cast up?

Sadly no.  I only managed to get a few pieces for a single table display, but that is all.  I would like to make them available for sale someday, but I have no idea who could produce them.  I don't do resin casting myself.

I think they've taken down their ancients scenery for the time being.  I'll see if I can find out when they'll be putting it back up for sale.

We may have a few at Crocodile Games left, I'll check.

OK guys, I just heard back from Simon at Model Earth - he's put up a PDF catalog so people can order the Lion Gate, Trojan Stelea, Minoan Ruins, etc.

You can access it here:

http://www.modelearthterrain.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Ancient-Cat.pdf (http://www.modelearthterrain.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Ancient-Cat.pdf)

It is not a shopping cart, so you'll have to email or call them the old fashioned way (but don't worry, they are the nicest of chaps!)

Thanks!  That's the idea!

There is a lot of Harryhousen influence in WarGods.

Thanks so much, I'm glad you like the Lion Gate.

However to clarify, I did not sculpt the Minoan Temples at Model Earth, those were done by the dazzlingly talented Simon Harris.  I just did the new statues and stelae, the Model Earth guys were kind enough to cast them for me.

Thanks for supporting them, their casting is top-notch.  Hopefully we'll see some more Lion Gate scenery projects popping up - I think the piece would work equally well for pulp-style games as well.
