A while ago I mused on picking up an age old project .So rather than pick one.I'll take the lunatic logic of thr Hive mind and do them all.
First choice is start with some Dwarfs . Now do I stick with the original painting style or sell off and start from scratch from the lead pile.(sounds and odd way to start I know.)Using a similar styling to the Giant and the ski dwarf.
I'm not sold on either course of action .So I'm starting with some allied units(and now you know why the whole fantasy army project got shelved in the first place ;D)
-
Oooh, I do like that Giant!
-
Looking really good!
Out of curiosity, have you already sculpted fantasy miniatures yourself?
-
Great stuff, love the chap in the plate with the specs :)
-
Fantastic.
And I love the banners.
-
Cheers Chaps,Glad you like them.
The banners aren't brilliant. They're all done to lool good at a distance. The dwarf banners took a couple of hours each(mainly because they're on paper and it doesn't do to rush painting acrylics as180gsm paper scares easily.)
The cavalry banner took 40 minitues for both sides.Gram plays with brushes alot so he could attest to the brush strokes and limited pallet been done at speed(had to sneak that in yesterday as the Mrs thought I was working on restoring an antique chair she bought in the morning. It took less than an hour to repair If she'd know thats she'd have made go with her for tea at her friends. No No No -dropped off picked up- kids at the cinema -chair mended -sneaked in some painting - Brownie points earned .=Win Win for all parties)
The cavalry are from the old Battle Masters game.
Just a minor tweak of a plastic head , plastic banner ,and two shield details.
The horses have a surprisingly wide gate.Didn't notice until I went to pop them onto standard cavalry bases.
I'm also doing a test unit of plastic archers from the game to.All with head swaps as the heads are undersized.
As for sculpting fantasy not for a long while(no ones commissioned any lol)
But some of the cultist for the follies range would fall under that heading(not released yet ;))
-
I decided on continuing with the old school three colour shade method .As I'm going to be continuing to expand units as time allows its probably the most sustainable method as it just uses off the shelf paints no mixing shades. So the first figure should be pretty much the same as the last.
I've managed to get the two test cavalry figures to a table top standard which should give an idea of the colour scheme for the battalion. A little bit of sods law (draw back of working at speed). The knights foot marked the cream barding whilst gluing him on.So only a little retouching required.Still its lost time.
Also a quick picture of the basic head swaps that are going to allow the archers to sit more comfortably with my other figures

Somebody should, would be interesting to see your sculpting style being used for fantasy miniatures! Great painting by the way.
-
Urgh.. More reasons to start painting my Oldhammer, lol. :D
-
Those cavalry figures, aren't they from an old board(ish) game that you could buy like in the 80s? I always thought the models were absolutely terrible, but you've done a wonderful job making them look amazing.
And those red archers... what are those? I really suddenly want a whole unit of those turban-wearing archers for my old-hammer Bretonnians :)
Thanks
n
-
Yes they're from the MB Battle Masters game.
The Human infantry figures are poor. But if you've got spare heads floating around then they're a seriously cheap alternative. The cavalry arent two bad a little tweat and cover up of a mould line and they workout around £3 a figure rather than £10-£15 for empire plastics on eBay.
Cubs has a thirty or so unpainted plastic Bretoninan archers he's selling( he obviously needs the money for the electric meter otherwise they wouldn't be that cheap ;))
Belgian.
All ready had some enquiries from a small company near me.
Just double busy .This week just gone I've been sculpting Russians , Had people collecting commissions, Stripped and cleaned six .303's a Bren. Built two sand bag frames for bayonet practice displays (only told last second they need a healthy and safety inspection plus a Coshh sheet for straw and Hessian :o ).
In morning I'm off for four days on a dig.So taking the Mrs and the youngest with me camping near the site.plus Ive a bucket load of deadlines that have been bumped for Partizan 2.
People wonder why I always look for the bar at a show .Simple drop off -job done- stuck here for a couple of hours whilst your mates plod round- so might as well relax - it all starts again on Monday.
-
Those old metal dwarves are absolutely fantastic. Brings back so many good memories of gaming in the early 90s.
-
Partizan is all done and dusted.
So I managed to fit a general/hero in.Over the last two evenings.(So around six hours.) Now I've seen it in day light it does need a little tlc.
It's an EBay find already undercoated and half painted and had a thick layer of dust.Quick wash and chuck paint at it.
With hind sight big big mistake. lol In my rush to keep this project on track.I'd totally forgotten how much softer these castings are compared to todays metals.Plus thirty year old superglue doesn't like soapy water.
Then you add in the fact I use a hairdryer to speed up washes and inks.
I finished painting and thought I'd give it one more blast with the hairdryer before adding sand to the base .Just to make sure sand didn't stick to the figure.
And Jenga! It totally fell apart .not just a little but completely .Wings, chair, body the lot!. Whilst painting I thought to my self 'I could have sworn the rider was in two parts . Turns out I was right lol.
After swearing a bit I had a chuckle at my own stupidity.I always strip clean and re glue second hand figures .But apparently I know better and took a short cut. So its my own fault.
To day if there's time I'll go back and hide finger prints and check gaps.
But Hay ho. ::)
-
just magnificent.
-
I'm glad somebody likes the way this is going lol
It occurred to me that the armoured horse's from the board game came to three and I'd one spare knight (plus a raid from the bit box came up with another armoured horse.so technically four.)
Weren't really enough four a reasonable unit.(although I do have a four figure Marauder cavalry unit for the army standard to paint.)
So after nearly fainting at the ebay price's for a single knight .I ended up with a bag full of second hand premade pre painted and re under coated knights so I'll be at it a while longer.
I've chucked some paint at five to get a feel for speed painting the rest.(four were already based.)
I think the colour scheme is going to hold up across the whole army reasonably well.
-
I've not had much time for this project. However I have managed to go back and add a small banner on the Pegasus. As it didn't quite fit once I'd seen the previous photographs.
-
goodness me that banner is superb - is that free-hand?
for 'speed painting', I think the cavalry look great - I'd be v/ happy with them as 'proper painting' tbh.
-
I'm glad you like the banners ,Yes is the answer I don't use pre made one's(not that there's anything wrong with them other than I can't afford them :D )
If your intrested I'll take a couple of progress pictures when I do the Army standard. As it'll be a bit fancy by comparison .
That said I've. To figure out the back banner for old Karl Fritz. As I might as well have the Emperor since this ally force for my dwarves is rapidly heading towards the point I'll be able to use dwarves as the allies for them instead .
As the Emperor is mounted on a Griffin thats in a very similar pose to the Pegasus . Its going to get reworked into an 'in flight' Griffin. So they don't look to similar from a distance.(If I'm honest I've painted a fair few of this model over the years for people. So I want mine to look different from all the others I've thrown paint at.)
-

that'd be good. Look forward to seeing that.
-
I've been a little busy with my home front thread making builds and chucking paint at everything in sight. So I've only managed to fit in the test unit of archers(crashing through them at speed I totally missed the flash on the bow hands and a few legs .Started removing flash one night and managed to convince my self the next day I'd finished and sprayed them black )
Now they're all done and frosting over nicely so I'll have to re varnish at some point. ::) should have waited until it was a little warmer this morning but never mind is an easy fix.
-
archers look great with those head swaps, although I've missed where the red bodies come from originally.
-
Some nice colour schemes you've selected and painted. And at crash speed.
-

They're from the Battlemasters game, same as the knights. They were a good source for cheap plastic Empire, O&G en Chaos minis in the early 90's.
-
Yep you missed it & Yep W.K. is right lol
I bought them on here to be test pieces. Before I abuse the MB Battle Masters game .
The box set will give quite a nice core of figures for a second force which I've a few things put by to bulk it up including a different giant .
-

ah, right - thanks.
-
Love your painting & choice of miniatures!
-
I've been a little busy of late and occasionally sidetracked with Battle Masters threads full of interesting interpretations. Which had wondering if I should re think my game plan.
So to motivate me to do more I've started tweaking a Emperor Karl Franz . I've never been keen on the original griffin as it always seemed wooden. As I'd picked up an incomplete version 2 of Franz .( No front legs, Two left wings, and Ironically both hand options.)
I thought it'd be fun to try and add some more movement to the figure.
In a similar fashion to the high elf version. Even though they're two different mediums .I thought it should be possible get it to have some of the movement of the lighter plastic into the bulkier metal regardless of the styling differences.
-
I love that high elf noble on griffon. Great work and a beautiful green.
-
That IS some very, very nice painting on that Griffin.
-
crikey, this is coming along rather well.
-
Quick update .
I've managed to paint the Griffin and rider tonight.(I'll take some pictures in the morning as mentioned many many times before the lighting in the house is naff as we have a photosensitive child staying so its like a cave. )
Still haven't bought any grass tufts as I keep getting sidetracked buying figures. :D
As promised I'll take some photos of the back banner as I make it.
Mark.
-
Looks the biz, despite the lighting
:)
-
Thank you ,Here's some slightly better pictures and with a couple of context one's with the high elf one(painted in day light) and the Pegasus.
-
Great painting and loving the colouring on the feathers. I am going to copy that.
-
It's a really quick and easy method.
Paint all the feathers and highlight in the top colours then shade the upper half. The shade colour becomes the wash for the flight feathers. Then shade the flight feathers. This in turn becomes the wash for the darkest feathers. Then shade these and use a little. Of this last shade in a couple of places on the lightest feathers shading.
That way all the colours tie together .(if you use a hairdryer you can do the whole thing in roughly an hour.)
Back banner takes a little longer simply because it needs to dry at each stage just so the paper doesn't get saturated. So around two and half hours including sidetracking and a coffee break.
The only oddities /needs a little practice in painting banners is not paint symmetrical sides.
I don't do this because when you bend the banner it can suddenly look cluttered and simply stops looking symmetrical.
The side that is down / facing the table gets slightly bigger eyes and shields with brighter details.Than the side facing up.
Ones the banner is finished and the movement is fixed and the false shadows added it feel much more even than if I'd spent an age painting a symmetrical banner in the first place.
-
::) At was this point last night I realised. I'd not actually done the final shading of the Pegasus banner(which would explain why the damned thing kept bugging me everytime I looked at it.)
So here's both figures. They still need a matt varnish to take the shine out of the banners .But table ready if nothing else.
Mark.
-
Awesome work, and a very helpfull tutoriall for the banner!!
-
yes, thanks for that.
-
Looks great!
-
I'm glad you like it .
They're quick and simple. But most of all functional table top models which is what I need.(and all I have time for.)
Now it's back to painting cavalry.
-
Did not realize I'd been that busy on other projects.Till I updated .
Here's the first part of a new project . I've no idea what the finished Castle will look like as this is a junk pile raid project.
Only using whats already floating about. Nothing new or bought in.
-
As I'm being frugal with the materials I have . I've etched the remaining test piece of stone work into another wall section.
-
This wall section looks mighty fine, but I would not expect to see timber on the outside facing towards people who might set fire to them...
-
There's a suprizing number of Medieval wooden castles . Although they tended to be re built for the obvious reason you mentioned.
There's a couple of Russian reconstructions.which tend to look like a Larp version of an American frontier fort.
I'm airing on the side of caution at the moment as this really is the wrong way to go about a project. It'd be a doddle if I could plan it and buy in what was need . But the challenge is to get something useful from what I have . Not what I can buy in.
I'm trying to build something useable and that looks plausible as a castle even though it's fantasy.
So in theory I should end up with a mashup similar to Guedelon Castle ,with Murus Gallicus inspired detailing (which is providing heavy on paint for the base colour.) The main reason for using it as a detail on the face of the walls is to help hide the joints of the modules .Its a sort of belt and braces tactic. As I'm still undecided on whether it should be modular or a static single build.( Work mode keeps nagging single piece display. Gamer head says it'd be more practical in pieces. All my other stuff is but oddly enough this one keeps nagging to be a single piece. For the life of me I can't think why ? ;D)
It's still down to materials. I'll worry about the end result when I get there.
-
What's that stone texture from? Really useful stuff!
-
Matt
Secret weapon for lazy throwaway displays. So don't tell anyone ;)
It's Holden Decor ' Hadrian Plain' wallpaper. It's around £20 a roll . But it lasts way longer than you'd think. These two wall sections were easily cut from a 20cm deep strip off the roll.(including a generous unpaited boarder with in that 20cm)
It's a doddle at this stage it's just two base colours of khaki and stone green in washes that are allowed to do their own thing when the two colours meet and mix.Once it's dried just cut out and pva in place . takes no time at all.
I'm being a little cautious with it at the moment as I've only around a 70-80cm piece left . The point of the build is not to buy in anything . Only to make something useful out of the scraps that were heading for the recycling.
-
Quick up date.
Not really had much spare time of late. But here's a little progress.
-
Not had much spare time for the castle of late.
In fact the cat's have spent more time sleeping against than anything. So it's going to need a little TLC.
But I have managed another unit of ebay recycled figures.
-
Really nice painting on those stone walls, Mark. :D
(the knights are good too I suppose ;) )
-
superb.
-
I'm going to try and sneak a little time tonight to build the gateway superstructures/Hoardings.
So it shouldn't be too long before an update this time. ::)
Mark.
-
I did manage to fit in a little work on the castle . This morning is the first chance I've had to take a photo during a coffee break.
The hoardings are starting to come together. I've even managed a couple of musings on corner type's . I still need to check how viable they are in terms of materials.
Plus the silly bits( where the papers lifting because I'd not used enough glue or wiped it off the edges picking it up. ::) )
The gateway is just about the right size to fit my pulp vehicles through and Fantasy figures to look comfortably sized in.
-
It looks great
-
It is a BEAUTIFULLY crafted piece. It certainly makes a striking background for a variety of miniatures. OUTSTANDING WORK!
-
Seems like I need to procure some of this wallpaper. lol. Great work!
-
Loving the castle.
-
All great stuff, but the banners are really something different. They look amazing at gaming distance (which was your intention).
-
That gate way is amazing :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Love the dwarfs as well
super painting
-
That is looking VERY good. Nice work indeed 8)
-
fantastic :-*
-
Brilliant Mark 8)
{goes off to buy some wallpaper}
-
I'm glad you all like the way this is plodding along .
I've just finished a grueling run of work.
So hopefully I'll be able to sneak a little time for this tomorrow evening.
I know well and truly mixing up periods and styles but Gormenghast it isn't( I'll be lucky to build anything with a footprint of 40cm square.)
Here's a couple pictures of what I'm aiming for with the hoardings .
Peithetarios,
I'm not a big fan of painting anymore. Gone are the days of painting elves with blue eye's. Nope everything is toned down to a' bums on seats ' style of painting.
So I aim for an arms length standard for the Empire
Section of this project. The Dwarves are in a different style to the Empire. But the High Elves are where I'll be putting a little more effort and time in.
-
That dwarf banner really is the tits! :o
Wifey is looking over my shoulder and is just as impressed. :D
-
Just for you and the Mrs. Here's a quick grabs worth. (Although the marine is looking a little battered after year of dodging dice)Plus a couple of High elves to give some gravitas to my previous statement on using different painting styles for different races.
-
Wow! Nice, your painting really suits the miniatures and of course the banners are brill 8)
-
So I aim for an arms length standard for the Empire Section of this project. The Dwarves are in a different style to the Empire. But the High Elves are where I'll be putting a little more effort and time in.
Poxy Elves! Pixie-fiddlers the lot of them! It's the honourable upstanding dependable unthwartable dwarves you should be honouring with your brush work.... just dunk the pointy-eared unicorn-botherers in rainbow paint and call them done!
-
These minis are fantastic. You must be very pleased with how they have turned out.
Tony
-
Good lord those banners. They're not decals? You painted every one of those?????????????
That Space Marine banner in particular is on a whole other level.
-
Since you all know which end of a brush is which.
I'll take that as a win lol
Cheer s
Tony,
I'll only be pleased when there's enough done for a table.Even then it's a bit anticlimactic.
Traditionally it goes along the line of. Me and Tony(another Tony -there's a lot of you.)Will spend an age setting up a table. Open a bottle of red stand around feeling smug then finish the bottle , look at the table and one of us or both (more often than not.) will say "Pub".
Since these days I'd struggle to drink a third of what he does .Thats pretty much the end of the first outing for them .Theres normally a couple of false starts before dice are rolled. ::)
Pointy ears ,are a lot more time consuming than Dwarves . Once you've painted flesh tones, beard, and metallics your more than 80% done with a dwarf
Matt,
Never used a shield transfer or printed banner. All are just painted.(Nothing wrong with them .Just never been able to justify the exspense.)
The spacemarine banner is as old as the figure. If you want I'll try and take a better photograph as the night sky is a little more colour full than the photo show's.
All the banners except the dwarf one are double sided.Felt a little OTT to show pics of the reverse side's since they're pretty much the same as the fronts.
-
Good lord those banners. They're not decals? You painted every one of those?????????????
That Space Marine banner in particular is on a whole other level.
You know, that banner is possibly the best I’ve seen on a Space Marine, subtle and original, brill!
-
It's a very old banner it was made for the figure when the figure was first released(it's not looking so clever on the reverse side of the banner ;))
Since I committed a the sin of mixing scifi and Fantasy in my pic's. I thought I'd redeem myself with a selection of pics. I paint in slightly different styles for different type's of rules/ games.
Here's some Lotr that are for the table top and the RPG respectively.
-
Here's a few more.
Old citadel dragons . Plus a dragon ogre converted from a Marauder miniatures Dragon the torso I think is either Mrauder or Citadel I seem to remember it came with that plastic horse body with a square bottom.
-
Again a few more randoms from the collection.
Including the cereal packet golem I threw together for another thread (a few years ago now ::) )
-
Last but not least a quick group shot of the Empire banners so far.To bring us full circle.
The golden standard ornament is the recycled. Helm of one of the Battle masters knight's that will make up numbers in one of the units.Infact I've used another one to act as the standard ornament of second unit.As it seems to hide it's origins quite well once its plonked on top of a banner.
(Sorry for the spreading the pictures over multiple posts. Unfortunately it was the only way around that time out error that pops up every now and again.)
-
Good grief, that is an amazing collection of beautifully painted figures! I’m torn between admiration and sheer envy...
I think I’ll take the high road and opt for being inspired, thanks for posting the pics!
-
Cracking figures with great painting :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Lots to love in this thread! Brilliant painting.
-
Spectacular work! Very inspiring!
-
Cheers Chaps.
I've just spent the evening. Putting together the five figure cavalry unit that will form the Army standard bearer.
It'll be Four Marauder miniatures mounted knights and the citadel mounted bard ADD 18. (I could have sworn I'd six mounted knights but fours all I could find after rooting around for the best part of the day. :?)
I'll undercoat them tomorrow and do a rough sketch of the Army standard.
Plus a little work on the castle.
I would have done some more of it yesterday. But I managed to sidetrack myself in sculpting a version of the 'Mad Guru.'
Absolutely no idea what to do with an Afghan cleric riding a mule .But I've now got one.(Well nearly just his hands to make.)
-
This project is looking great! Inspiring stuff.
Thanks
n
-
Even though We been locked down for an age I've managed a little progress on this part of my project.
-
"Dammit lads, I told you not to give Mark any more cereal! Now he'll be unstoppable!"
-
Oh, that's brilliant.
-
[quote"Dammit lads, I told you not to give Mark any more cereal! Now he'll be unstoppable!"][/quote]
"He's had his 3 wheetabix!"
-
A fantastic project - it looks great and I can't wait to see it all finished.
Tony
-
Thanks It's a bit of a slow burner project.
The 'Keep' will take up the space of the fourth wall and corner. So as far as the curtain wall is pretty much as seen
I'm currently experimenting with a sample of fine wood chip wall paper to substitute for rendering.(Not enough stone effect wallpaper left ,is the catalyst for this sudden burst of invention) Found its possible to hide the seams. With a little over saturation with Mod podge and stippling the two edges into each other..
Not a brilliant photograph as it started to rain . I felt a paper model would be scare easily . So it was chucked in a box and taken in doors.
-
.
-
I NEEED TO KNOW MAN! :D
Me too!
-
No it's not dead nor unfortunately is it finished.
Life and lockdown change priorities. Work load and commissions have be stupidly high. Add in home schooling and Fostering.Means I'm working most days until 1.30 am and every third or fourth day till three. So I've not really had the motivation to run with it .
But some progress has been made. I've managed a little work on the wall section.Every section and corner has a roof . although all the components haven't glued together.
Ive also managed to get the basic form and colours on the lower section of the keep.( although I can't seem to locate the interior detail for the dungeon/ cellars.)
I've used the majority of my hobby time to catch up with some of my WW2 buildings. ( over on my Homefront thread on the WW2 board.)
I've just got a steam locomotive to build for it and I'll be able to catch up on the castle build.
Mind you I'm sort of already on it as Im sculpting figures I want to use with the castle.( Guard's Guard's on Frostgrave board.) They kind of started out as a challenge from friends. Now they're off to be cast for Sally 4th. But I'm still sculpting extra figures I want for this project.
-
.
-
I'm not up for a sainthood. I'm just Double Busy lol
There are day's when we've nothing on and CBA kicks in.
I spent the last couple of days weeding and starting cleaning the garden for this year. So this morning I'm Brownie poitied up ! and have been left to my own devices for an hour or two .So I've been inspired to do a little more .Plus a little. Inspiration means I've figured out how to make it more versatile so it doubles as 80% of a Frostgrave board or 40% of a fantasy town borad. So a productive couple of hours.
-
Nice looking buildings
-
fabulous stuff. I mentally noted down the wallpaper hack. brilliant idea. if I ever get a house and enough space for such terrain, I will hopefully remember!
-
.
-
That's looking great! I started one years back using small marble kitchen tile offcuts for the bottom part then undulating timbers for the roof.
-
I must admit I rather enjoyed adding bits to it and trying to move my fantasy stuff along.
My game plan for the castle is now to add another corner and straight section to the set .It sounds ridiculously obvious four walls and four tower's and a keep. lol but its not . As simple as that as the original idea was to have an asymmetric castle with the keep acting as the fourth corner corner and the forth side. This would have easily given me four options the basic castle. Two table edge castles both 'L'&'U' shaped and a free standing keep.
Just by adding a corner and another wall section. I can additionally make the bog standard four walls four corners, a citadel useing just the corners.A citadel or narrow castle four corners & two walls. Or use all four wall sections as a city/town wall. Across the table or add in a corner or two.
Which means I could have the keep on the table a town wall and a four corner structure( or two 'U' shaped table edge structure made from corners.)
If there's enough little bits of wall paper left over I can add two. Wall/ corner breaches. If I do the clever thing and stylize them a little more by having each breach made of two separate pieces of fallen wall and ignore the pile of rubble that's normally represent in a wall breach. Then my options for the castle increase no end . For example just plonking the two halves of a breach section back to back gives a sort if rubble monolith. Placing one half at each end of the high tower corner will give a sort of free standing wizards tower.
And so on.
So it's going to be more if a build than originally planned. But these sort of projects often are.
DD. Did you ever finish it or is it in the corner storing dust?
Im banned from dark chocolate digestives as full packets have been know to inexplicably evaporate when im pottering .
-
Whilst my hand was recovering I spent a little time resculpting two of the Guard's Guard's sculpts to work as Empire foot Hero's. I've managed to paint a few more Empire figures. So I'm slowly catching up.
-
I found a little unexpected down time to day . So I finally threw some paint at something. I was planning on grinding through the great swords. But a dragon seemed much more fun. lol
( and a little tweak of my Empire hero's)
-
I wish my paint landed that well when I throw it about!
Ok its fun but no where near as good a result as your fun :)
-
That is very nice. I've got the Dark Elf version in bits somewhere, I'll have to get it started.
-
Cheers
But it's not a fancy paint job . The hard work is carried by three colours . Olive green. Then a fast dry brush with an slightly thinned yellow. Dark turquoise is heavily added as shadow and quickly wiped off .( it tones it's self in when you wipe it away) then all highlights are just a couple of layers of thinned yellow which allows the green to show through and blend/ tone without any real effort. With the final highlight of neat yellow hear and there. The under belly is done the same way only with a Tanned flesh instead of yellow. Then a little pale flesh for a final highlight. The margins between the green and pink have a thinned yellow was over them. It took around two hours to get that far. So its quite fast .The trick is just to do one side at once ie. One wing upper then the other one side of the body then the other. You can really charge through stuff with a little planning.
Trev,
I pick this up at Partizan a couple of years ago . It need a horn adding. But once I got started I resculpted the eyes , tongue, and snout. Then removed one clawed finger from each of the front paws and added them to the back of the rear feet. It needed a new spear tip as well.
As it came already undercoated when I bought it I just over sprayed the whole thong once I'd finished playing. It wasn't until Instarted painting that I found out that what looked like a fur lining on the skirt was actually a tone of old over painted super glue and the figure was damaged behind it. At which point I was 90% done .So there wasnt any point in resculpting . I just choose a brighter colour combination for the cloth to hide some of the damage

Nice dragon.

Wonderfull to see such a great job on the old "S" shaped dragons GW made back in teh 90's/ OI think the one you have is the second Prince Imrik . I painted it when I was 18, I have it in various pieces , its been on my to do lits for a long time . Maybe next year . Really enjoyed trawling this thread really inspiring

DD. Did you ever finish it or is it in the corner storing dust?
Surprisingly I did finish it for a Frothers' game at Salute 2010.

Thats wonderfully characterful. I like the stone work. Puts me in mind of the Stone work of South America.
The dragon is another's butterfly moment on the road to get the Castle and Empire force finished .
I've a reasonable size force of Elves awaiting paint.Mostly 90's stuff and earlier. But I'm making sure( ish) that I finish the Empire contingent first. Or maybe the dwarf stuff. ::)

A quick post knocked up a leader for my mercenary/free company. A Very very loose take on Gotz Von Berlichingen. I've got to stay up ridiculously late for a conference call. So I'm going to see how far I get painting him. Then update in the morning.
-
I managed to chuck enough paint in the right places to make it worth putting on table. Although I did manage a howler getting paint on the horses head( didn't even notice until I took a pic.)
Since It's just a fun piece. I took the opportunity to try a new matt spray varnish. Overall quite impressed slight frosting on the hammer and hand ( probably my fault as I was spraying at speed and not maintaining any real distance from the figure.)
It's recommended for use at 15c° I sprayed it at 3am so the temp was around half that and misty so humidity was quite high.
Only noticeable issue being it's killed a fair chunk of the colour tones and blending. I think I'll probably use colour forge just for vehicles and stick with the air brush for figures.
-
Next bit will be the units standard.
It's not really a stretch to tweak his Historical heraldry into an Empire themed Standard.
-
Very nice rendition of Götz von Berlichingen, a man whose name and quote is still well known to every living German nowadays. He looks perfectly like I imagine him in flesh and iron and a very good choice for your leader. :D
-
Oh that Gotz is fantastic. Your usual excellent work on the face.
-
Your conversion of Gotz is magnificent. I wonder how the Bauernjorg would feel about a robber knight like von Berlichingen appropriating his banner !?!
-
This is a wonderful thread and I am sorry to have come to it so late. Your banners are wonderous, and such skilled castle building.
-
Love that last mounted guy. Great work.

Michi,
He's inspired by a Christmas trip back in '78 we were living near Celle at the time.(I'd have been around nine) We went to a Christmas market it was dark and raining lights bouncing off the cobbles. All I could remember was I had to meet back at the horse shoes in the cobbles. I was given a small book by a stall holder about a Knight with a metal hand. Whilst I stood waiting for my family. I told my ten year old about it and we sat and Googled 'German knight with a metal hand' ( I have bugger all knowledge of 16th century history so I can't claim to be enlightened on the subject) I was simply told to make him by my ten year old( same as Tin tin.) This seemed the best compromise between my orders and a useful figure. As I'd just bought the horse off ebay with the intention of adding the engineer from the steam tank as its replacement torso.
Once I realised how much work the horse need just to make it useful. I figured it might as well be his Gotz request.
Metternich,
Totally agree they'd be spinning in their graves if the knew. But as a starting point for an Empire banner it's perfectly suited given I've enough old lion headed dark elf shield I intend to use for his retinue of swordsmen.
I'm still trying to finish the castle the lower section of the keep is done .Still haven't quite gathered enough bits to finish the remaining two floors and roof sections.
Fram,Elbows
Cheers I've just be talking to a ebay seller whose going to send me some of the Highlands miniatures prints later this month for a comparison /painting Including some foot winged lancers to act as a bodyguards for my first edition war alter.

Spent the last couple of evenings trying to colour in the cardboard to point where its useful. I've now enough painted for a 'U' or 'L' shaped table edge castle.
The keep is slowing me down as its a big piece and finding enough time to get it a usable stage is proving elusive. ( I was planning on spending some time this week on it. Apparently I'll be redecorating my son's bed room before he's home from uni on Friday. That and looking after the Mrs and no4 son both having picked up a nasty cold bug from swimming ((both tested negative so more an inconvenience than a worry. I was looking forward to some hobby time before they decided to be so inconsiderate. Should have known better than to plan ahead lol)
There's still a few more shutters to add and shading around all of them. Play stopped due to convincing myself pushing a piece of wire through card could be achieved with a finger tip.( for the record it can't and it makes your finger leak.)
-
Very nice 8)

Absolutely amazing!

Well done Leaky Finger! That is going to be a fine castle or city wall. I would be happy to besiege it. My archers would sneak to the bottom of the walls and fire burning arrows into the floor of the walkways from below. Then they would hammer big nails into the wooden posts and climb up to finish your guards who would still be on the lookout for what is happening without seeing death creeping up from under their feet… :D

Archer #1: "What are those many holes in the ceiling above us meant to be?"
Archer #2: "Oh, shi…*!"

Very atmospheric work there. Well done.
-
It looks great.

Presumably ran out of anything else to throw.
Looking great - very nice fantasy vibe to the towers, like something out of an old Citadel compendium.
-
Damn that's looking good!
As mentioned before, looks like something out of old Citadel splash pics!
-
Cheers Chaps,
Trying to keep motivated with this side project. So it's always nice to hear it's going in the right direction.
Your spot on with the look .As I'm aiming the whole project into a bleak and darker (some would say old fashioned) fantasy look.
I've managed to knockout a quick/speed painted unit of great swords.
The only thing I'm not sure about it the cavalry movement trays as they're slightly wider than I thought they'd be.( hence no static grass.)

Superb work!
And magnificent textured wallpaper. If only it were available in the USA. These patterns are the closest thing I’ve found:

Gorgeous results on those castle bits. Something I'd love to attempt if given time.
-
Very nice weathering on the castle.
-
Finally got a refresher game in.
After the cunning plan on both sides failed. We spent most of our time.Reading rules and scratching our heads.
-
The castle looks even better surrounded by figures - good work mate 8)

Sorry to one and all. I got carried away with actually having rolled dice. That I forgot to reply to posts before I added the pictures.
The only reason we ended up rolling dice( I can't in all honesty call it an actual game. As it had more in common with trying to translate Latin with your eyes shut .Than an actual game )
Is I remembered I'd just over a hundred Citadel Norman's painted, with a handful of of gripping beast thrown in for good measure.
Which would work as Britonian Allies for the dwarves.,and Proxy/levied troops for the empire.
So to get it feel like a bigger game we used a 4'×4' board narrowing down to a bottle neck of 2'8".
Total and utter chaos ensues and we're let drinking more beer and watching Zulu.
-
Pre Pandemic I did a take on 'Guards Guards!' Over the last week I've been trudging through painting my 'Watch'.Over on my Workbench thread.
However it seemed more appropriate to add a progress update to my Fantasy thread than my Workbench. As these haven't gone smoothly .( Including an encounter with the Window cleaner.)

Why is that version of Carrot seeming a bedraggled madman?! lol ???
-
That dragon is a blast from the past. Very nice work all around.
-
The figures and gate look brilliant! I like the pose on that dragon. Pretty sure I wouldn’t want to be that guardsman, though!
-
The sheer level of quality on that wall, tower, and gatehouse has me peanut butter and jealous.
-

I really like that he is not looking like some sort of Siegfried. That ties him more to his comrades who all look properly cool. Great job on all of them!

Cheers Chaps.
The varnish mishap nearly consigned them to being dunked in paint stripper, and thrown it a draw to think about what they'd done.
The castle is still not finished infact the gateway still needs tweaking and leaf litter adding as I find a Spring,Autumn feel is more appealing than either Summer or Winter.
I've pretty much gathered enough materials. To resume building the keep. As building an interior takes twice as much materials and nearly three times as long to finish ( he said pointing out the obvious ::)) But this is no labour of love ,more a battle of wills between myself and the recycling bin .
My Carrot isn't based upon his description at the start of the book. Rather it's inspired by the description of the show down with the dragon, and the line ' No bloody lizard does that to me'(paraphrased slightly) .
I've a certain Orangutan and less than enthusiastic 'Wizzard' to paint . The one thing I didn't make was the luggage .Which is tempting to do given time.
I've two dragons from the range.Bought new when first released (At the time they made a severe dint in my savings from my Saturday job)
Over the years they've been rebased ,tweaked and repaired .
Somewhere along the line I've lost the accompanying miniature for the Oriental Dragon. But I've still managed to keep hold of the knight.
I know there's dozens of more modern dragons knocking about. Many far better sculpted and much much more imposing on a table. Infact I've coloured in a few for other people.
Regardless of new and shiny Dragons, this old orange dragon is still the one I drag out when I need a dragon mini.
-
Very nice :-* :-*
I’ve still got two Ral Parha dragons, unfinished; one huge, one little. Should do something with them after seeing your cracking work :)
-
You definitely should, given your love of aircraft. Since a Dragon miniature is little more than a lumpy aircraft kit .
With out rooting around I think I've only three dragons painted. Technically only two ,as I only noticed I'd left the fabrics sketched in on the Dragon rider ;D
I did pick up a replacement Marauder Dragon at the last Partizan show. As my original one arrived miscast( back in the mail order days pre Internet)
So it ended up being chopped up into this as I didn't like the original white plastic horse with the square backside.(It never occurred to me to just reshape the horse.)

Just in the middle of tweaking and repairing some figures that managed to damaged during the storms earlier this year.
( Serious amount of work and life. Has delayed their repairs. But things are starting to even out.)
-
Beautiful work on all of those figures! I especially like the colour palette on the carrion model. The basing on the elf is interesting, too- very simple, but I like the effect.
-
Slowly but surely I'm finding a little time to work on some of my back log of figure's .Eventually I'll have finished my Guards Guards warband Although Cohen destiny's is to join my Barbarian warband.
-
Finally managed to colour in both mini's. Now it's just a case of a couple of Wizards.
