Title: Normandy Farm my 3D Project
Post by: Hami on July 22, 2019, 05:05:45 PM
This has been my own personnel project for my Bolt Action Games.

The aim of this project is to have a farm house (printed), a barn (designed but not printed), a stable like structure (printed), a shed (designed not printed), gate house (designed not printed) and finally a wall that will enclose the farm structures with ruined or damaged parts.

I have taken a few photos of the project so far and placed some of my British in the photos for scale.

The farm house:

Stable like building - the middle part in the door way is a separate item and can be removed at any time.

Nice work - and useful in several periods.

Looks like I will have some painting to do soon!

Hami (my son) creates the designs and prints them himself.  I am sure that he is open to bribery!  He did a whole Dark Age village for me.

I have been busy in the garden this evening.

Really cool ! What 's the source of the designs, please ?

As my Dad said, I design and print a lot of my own stuff. This is one of those designs.

As for files becoming available. Please drop me a PM and we can have a chat.

Apologies for the quality of the photos, I have basically took a photo of my laptop screen.

This is my Gate House

This is the Barn - there is a floor and roof to go with it but I have left them out as they are the same as the house.

and then the Bombed out version of the farm house - this will be modular the same as the farm house. This is NOT FINISHED but you can see what I am trying to achieve.

Once I have printed all these I will post a few photos.

Looking good. I would be interested to see painted versions, as to my eye, the stonework looks to be a bit exaggerated, but under paint it will probably look spot on. (You could always add plaster as well.)

with regards to stone work please see photos of the church from the dark age village I designed and printed with the same stone work.

yep, that works. Very nice. On buildings like the farmhouse, I would be tempted to half plaster the walls too, but there are plenty of pictures of raw stone buildings.

One thing I would like to see 3d printed are all the various bits and pieces that need to be added to buildings, such as telephone terminators, signboards, drains, etc.

Stuff like this:

or this one on the right:

Once I have completed this and tried to scale it down to 20mm, I am looking at doing a small French town that will be plastered etc with some bricks/stones shown at parts as per old 1944 photos.

as for the extra parts to be added to buildings this wouldn't be too difficult to design and print all I would need is photos and rough sizes.

I will have a look and play around and see what I can do and post some photos.

I will be interested to see what you come up with. I have seen some really nice layouts for games, but they all look just a bit too antiseptic and tidy.  All the wartime photos show street furniture, various bits and pieces like lamp-posts, poles, signs, telegraph/telephone connectors, rubbish bins, bicycles, boxes, etc.

So I finally got back to my printer after a few weeks away from it.

As I posted previously saying once I got back near the printer I would test print and posts photos, these are the finished prints of the Barn and the Gatehouse both at 28mm scale.

Barn -

The Gatehouse - I will need to change the design of this as part of the underside did not print as well as I was hoping for.

I am currently test printing my Ruin Farmhouse at 20mm scale, so once that is completed I will post a few photos of that for use to have a look at.

Really nice. I like the details on broken shutters, and the visible woodframe in the roof. Great work !

Thank you.

I am visiting my dad this weekend (where the rest of the printed farm is) so I will get some photos of the whole farm and I will post them up later this weekend.

I popped down to visit my Dad today and while he was unpacking and looking for figures I set up the farm and took some photos on the whole complex. this is what the farm looks like.

This means that the whole farm can be printed at 20mm scale without loosing the detail.

I printed off to many walls and not enough corners:

I left the centre piece out of the stable like building on this photo.

the barn

I have also taken a few photos in the different scaling of the building for use, I have placed a 20mm and 28mm figure next to each building for scaling:

and some other shots of the 20mm building:

Thanks,

There seems to be more interest in 20mm than 28mm lol

Good job it scales down well and I am able to print both 20mm and 28mm.

I printed some 20mm buildings in raw 0.3mm, and it took ages ! I'm not surprised 28mm gamers can be intimidated to print such a big project.

I am not a fan of 0.3mm layers, all the prints you see are either 0.2mm or 0.15.

it takes a while but looks better and finishes better in 0.2mm.

You're right ! But it was the fastest way to have a complete village (including church and ruins) printed in a decent timelapse.

Now that my basic set is done, I'm not against the idea of printing new buildings in 0.2mm.

that's a fair one, Time scale is always a key factor when printing. If you don't print you don't understand how long it takes  o_o

Thanks,

Once I started designing the farm I found "Printable Scenery" amongst other google images under ww2 Normandy Farm / Flames of War buildings etc. I also looked at several photos from that period to base them on.

My next project for the next several months is a small French town, well the out skirts of it anyway.

well done! really great looking project. I love your attention to detail, like the guttering and damaged shutters. The walls also look just the right thickness whereas mdf usually looks too thin, resin often rather thick.
If I had the room to store any more buildings I'd be looking to buy some off you!

Wow, that’s very impressive.  I’d not realised 3D printing had come on so far.

Over the past few years it has come on leaps and bounds. However the quality of printer and PLA used does have an effect on the end product.

Thank you, I am currently designing the Barn etc in ruin as well so the whole farm can be destroyed etc.

Very nice indeed. Funny enough, having spent last night looking for an old set of Waterloo card buildings I had squirreled away somewhere, it strikes me that making a set of designs for modular walls and buildings that could make up La Haye Sainte or Hougoumont could be very popular - especially since it could be used for any number of periods and be readily scaled up/down.

So I have now finally completed this little project after many months of doing it in-between other projects (mainly for my old man and my 3d printing adventure can be found here - http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=122216.msg1582900#msg1582900 ).

This was the final touch to my farm complex. The Ruined barn, it is about 170mm long x 100mm deep x 100mm height, it is the same size as the original barn just has seen better days. I have also printed ruined floors for in inside of the barn but forgot to take a photo of them.

I am due to see my Dad this weekend so I will try and get some photos of both farms and maybe some action photos as I am sure we will squeeze in a few games while I am down visiting.

Wow, this is an awesome piece of 3D art!  :-*

I've been absent from LAF for a while and today I started to look for some Normandy ideas for my 15mm project. But I didn't expect to find such eye candy!

Actually I wouldn't dare to ask if you're willing to share you're work but in case that you consider to I'd be glad to give it a try on my Ender 3x (which should arrive next week... ;) )

Cheers
