Title: A new Thing - M50 Ontos
Post by: Rich H on July 30, 2019, 08:45:32 AM: I was requested to take a look at the Ontos as it saw quite a bit of action at Hue

I'd forgotten how tiny tanks could be after wrestling with the gigantic M48!

First print came out well but it's missing a few details - headlamps and exhaust mostly.

It's been tweaked adn will be off to Empress for check soon....

Obviously it'll be split into many parts for casting in metal and resin.

Looks extremely 1960's space age! Interesting little tank - turned down by the army as it basically didn't fit into the doctrine but the Marines took it as it could get anywhere a Marine could. 50cal resistant armour was 'good enough' but they were extremely vulnerable to mines and AT weapons.

They packed a significant punch though... then ran off to reload!

They were basically expended by the marines, they ran them until they ran out of spares.

Some were used on static defence as a load of beehive (APERS) from a couple of Onti could stop a NVA attack dead in it's tracks.

I've added/tweaked a few bits:
Headlamps added
Barrel locks added
Hull/track interface tidied up to hide the join at the front
Exhaust added
Turret ring added so you can rotate/remove the turret

I think the parts will be:
Hull
Tracks L/R
4 upper guns (with spotting rifles)
2 Lower guns (With barrel locks)
Barrel lock
MG mount
Turret and gun mounts
Roof hatch
Headlamps L/R

I've split the turret into bits this time to make it easier to cast.
I've also opened the driver's hatch.

Just need to print the turret structure and hatches this evening.

Oh, too much, honestly - I’m doing an inventory of the collection, for both military checklist and photographic purposes. ;)
