I've been trying to get a copy of this with English sub-titles that will play on region 1 (USA) DVD players. Anyone know where to find one?

It’s a very good deal on iTunes at the moment. Heartily recommended!

Are you by chance outside the United States? Here in the US the Alatriste movie doesn’t show up in my search results.

Sorry, Since1968, I didn't imagine that iTunes movies would be region specific like that! I am in the UK. Sorry to have got your hopes up :-(

Btw i love that movie, its terribly flawed by the stupid decision to make it episodic and cram every book in there, but Mortensen IS Alatriste. He incarnated the character so good that he erased the one i had made in my mind by reading the books.

No worries! Sounds like it’s worth tracking down.

Definitely! Certainly the best 17th century battle scenes on film. Mortensen is brilliant in it. Agree it would have been better spread over more films / episodes.

Finally got to see it. My wife's Google-fu is much better than mine. She found the whole film on Youtube with English sub-titles. The costumes are magnificent and the photography excellent, what period feel. Many interior scenes look like Flemish master paintings. There's actually a wheel-lock pistol being wound up in one scene. I've never seen one before in a film. There's a siege, a fight at the start and the grand battle scene at the end, best pike and shot battle I've seen.
The downside? It is mighty confusing. Who is that guy and why are they fighting? Had to look up the plot on Wikipedia after, even then some stuff isn't explained. But hey, it sure is pretty. And the price is right! :D
Once I get through the next couple books, might have to start the Alatriste series.

My Google foo is far superior! I actually found it straight away! lol
Seriously though, I've been wanting to see this movie for a long time so I'm quite the happy bunny rabbit at the moment! 8) 8) 8)
Kind Regards

I watched it too. I thought it was splendid. It does seem very affordable on DVD at least in Europe.
