Title: 40mm 5th Maryland Militia 1812
Post by: Alan Mercer on August 11, 2019, 04:20:37 PM
40mm Sash and Saber figures. The base on the left represents the Independent Blues company, with the simple addition of lapels.

I’m working on the United Volunteers company which had lapels and shoulder wings and a company of the York Volunteers both of which were part of the 5th. The unit will eventually number 48 figures which will allow games at 1:10, or 1:20 (24 figures)

I still need to add flags, which is proving tricky to source so I might need to make my own or ask a friendly flag manufacturer to make.

Those are absolutely superb!

What sizes do you use for the bases?

These are great! I have an interest in the 5th Maryland Militia because Caliver do a marching figure in 28mm, I was planning to do a unit myself. Would appreciate anything you could find out about the flag!

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. The bases are 2x2.5 inches from Colonel Bill’s.

The flags will be something like these below. I got the blue flag from the 5th Maryland Facebook page. The text on the scroll would be changed to match the regiment depicted. Not entirely accurate, but better than nothing.

If any friends from across the pond have any more info, it would be much appreciated.

Very Nice Alan!
Which particular codes are these?
I am looking for models to use as Mid Peninsular War Spanish in simple British supplied uniforms and thought the US Regulars in fatigue jacket might work, especially with a top hat style headdress.
May I also inquire whether the Indepentent Blues company top hats are the Round Hats described in the S&S catalogue.
Cheers
Andrew

Andrew, these are mostly the plain coatee pack, with plain coatee Command pack. There’s a couple of the militia in there too. I added lapels for the independent blues and, yes those are the S&S top hats.

Napoleonics are crawling along. I’m too much of a butterfly to concentrate on finishing wargaming projects I’m afraid.

I for one would appreciate pictures of the crawl. I am having my second go at 40mm Napoleonics. The first set was started off the back of an image of your French Line (and my own twitchy wings of course), I sold the set during a bit of a financial crisis and have recently started again after receiving a gift of unpainted models.
I am enjoying the look of them and will be doing enough for a small battle (5-6 units a side) in due course.

Nice collection Andrew. I have only completed 2 French Bns and 2 Spanish so far. I have another 2 Spanish in the pipeline now that I have made some progress on War of 1812.

Although I have started in the Peninsular, I am keen on 1813 too, so Lutzen, Bautzen, Dresden etc. Would cost a bit though!!!

My aim is for eventual multi level play with small battles incorporating simultaneous sub plots at skirmish and character level - something like reading a Goldsworth , Scarrow or Cornwell novel so it is the Penensular for me.
I was looking at the 1812 Americans for use as Spanish, Did you you use Perry Alan?
Cheers

I used Perry for Uniformed Spanish, and Sash and Saber for ununiformed. One finished Battalion is from a couple of the guerilla sets with a couple of conversions, one in progress is a mix of some converted guerillas and the 1812 militia in civilian dress.

I’m not intending to offload anything at the moment, but you never know.

Thanks Alan,
Photos, your French were very good, did you put as much work into the spanish?
For Spanish irregulars I have also considered the 1812 un-uniformed militia,...but I want to maybe get the British to a little more stand alone level. I have two battalions and a third would do it.
Similar position with the French, have two Line and perhaps a Legere before I start on some colourful allies.
Progress on my first cavalry and guns attached. Basing is dual use for skirmish using Rebels and Patriots and ranking up to use General de Brigade.
I like painting 40mm and feel I could be tempted to return and upgrade the standard game ready jobs, something I don't usually ever get to in 28s.
1812 may feel bette for size of forces I will be able to muster (for a while at least) but I can't help returning to the Peninsular (done so many times in 28 and smaller).
Cheers
Andrew

Hi Alan, I may not be continuing 40mm (I am rural and my single local opponent for Historical games has 28s already).
If you woud like to give your Peninsular collection a boost let me know.
Cheers

Ah, but if I find another Antipodean they can pick up the mantle and I can paint them more!
My last 40mm set (which was similar) is however sitting on someone's shelf in Sydney for display and not used.
Being retired my capacity to keep buying big is not what it was and being rural my gaming options are limited The 40mm whilst wonderful are splitting the local stream so to speak.
If I don't find a good buyer I will not be upset to keep them and maybe continue.

Alan, may I ask you to recall the pack from which the model in the brown coat centre 2nd rank of the Maryland Militia came?
Title: Re: 40mm 5th Maryland Militia 1812
Post by: Alan Mercer on September 15, 2019, 10:27:30 AM
It is from 40AMW-04 Militia in civilian dress.

Although it isn’t that Spanish looking, I am using many from that pack as early war Spanish Infantry. Just add a Sash and a head with a moustache and it looks pretty good. If i get a chance I’ll take a in-progress photo.

Something like these. Once painted in various browns they look fine as Spanish.

Agree Alan and have ordered a packed of 20 (1812 Militia in civilian dress), just notice they include command so if I want to do separate militia units they will be very useful.
I have also ordered a couple of packets of the Polish infantry as they have closed lapels and with a bicorne should serve very well with a few of these fellows thrown in with Bonnet de Police.
I have also earmarked the Alamo Mexicans to use as Spanish skirmishers and Canadian Militia to use as Dragoons in Hybrid uniform.

Hi Alan, had another look at your WIP and like the way the sashes make them 'Spanish' I dare say something similar could be done with the FIW Civilians. What do you think?

I haven’t seen those in “the flesh” but I think some could work, particularly any in waistcoats scattered among other figures.

If I get some I will send some photos (probably will as more table scatter the merrier). I posted some head swaps on the polish on my basing thread but here they are again.
Cheers
