The spinoff films look sooooo much better than rehashing the trilogy....just shows what can be done with the background universe.

Well... It surely looks good, but after two dumpster fire movies and a third one upcomming Im a bit cautious. The cast so far though looks pretty good. I was expecting a nuclear handshake radiating manliness when i saw Carl Weathers  lol

Love it.

There was some pearl-clutching when Disney took over the films from Lucasfilm (and I admit to some worries), but you can't argue with their output. There's so much more depth to these offerings that explore the universe beyond the Empire vs Rebels wars.

Not sure that's IG88, I thought so at first too, but than I saw an interview with Waika Taikiki who apparently did the voice for IG11, still stoked to see an IG (which ever one it may) be kick ass, especially of he's voiced by Korg.

Apparently Disney reckon it'll take till 2024/25 until they start making a profit on the streaming service. I guess everything is up front with something like this. I'm sorely tempted with this and the prospective Kenobi series. I read that Jon Favreau developed and wrote half it before even pitching it to Disney. I've got high hopes for it.

It's not actually IG-88.  Same basic droid design but this one's IG-11.

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/IG-11

I'm cautiously hopeful about this one, much as I am with Picard.  Both franchises have been badly mishandled for far too long at this point, and Orville is too young to take over the throne yet.  :)

If you can find the footage from Star Wars celebration, you see them eating Salacious Crumbs on kabobs, stormtroopers are just dirty hired guns now and I believe he never takes the helmet off. And he doesn’t have name, just “the Mandalorian”. Definitely living up to the space Western it’s supposed to be.

It does look tremendous!

I reckon Star Wars is always better when it sticks to its roots in samurai films and Westerns (roots that are inter-tangled anyway) and leaves out the Force and the Jedi.

After seeing Solo again, I continue to think that it's the best of the recent films precisely because it does that (and also because it has a clear and fairly coherent plot). But The Mandalorian looks like it could far surpass it in the same vein. Fingers crossed ...

I’ve not had much bad to say about the new movies, I like the one-offs more than the series continuances; this series has me definitely wanting to sign up for Disney Streaming. It looks awesome.

I mean, Boba Fett always looked cool but really what did he do?
Got hired by Jabba to capture Solo, double dipped with the Empire for the same, didn’t actually capture Solo but let Vader do it, spent time vacationing on Tatooine and died.  Where does the reputation come from?

Rogue One and Solo had links to the original 4-6 movies. I wonder if this one will tie into any of them. I kind of hope it is one purely by itself and has no links whatsoever, perhaps a few "oh" moments but not a big giant, "this is why this happened" storyline.

I hope so too. All the films since the original trilogy have suffered a bit from those sort of contortions, though Rogue One and Solo handled them better.

If this is set on far-away worlds with plots that are inconsequential on the galactic scale, it'll be the better for it, I reckon.

Closer look there are T-70’s and I think the new A and Y-wings. Not sure about the B though.

My guess is that the Imp Duces have been left there (in the ‘storm cloud’) hidden away by the Empire but the Resistance, or what’s left of it, find them.

Should be suitably kick ass  :D

In the Old Republic MMORPG video game it is standard practice for bounty hunters. That game is set about 3000 years before Empire Strikes Back. Funny, that...  :)

Really looking forward to this.

Apparently it'll bridge the original 3 films with the latest 3 as it partially explains what the Empire did after their defeat by the rebels and how they morphed into the Order.

Been informed an Obi-Wan-Kenobi spin off is in the works which follows Obis life after the Clone Wars.

I watched the first episode and really enjoyed it. It is an intro episode and I don't think they wanted to get into too much at once. I do classify myself as a SW fan. That said, I also love to see anything in the SW verse that breaks away from the Skywalker saga. I think Rogue One and Solo were better than Force Awakens and Last Jedi. Also I do think if you have seen Clone Wars & Rebels animated series you will know a lot more about what has gone on with the Mandalorian. It gives you some perspective on what is going on. If you haven't, you'll probably just view him as another Boba Fett bounty hunter. Anyhow, I am along for the ride and looking forward to the next episode.

I liked it a lot..
Not much talking, very spaghetti western feel (even to the beast taming to ride scene)

Imho it lost its tempo a little with that ranch scene - but it wasn't that bad.

Disney made huge mistake providing such wanted series in such limited markets unless its an exercise in market reasearch.. I guess it will be one of the most pirated series to date. I would totally buy D+ to see it legally (although i heard that the platform itself does not work properly)

Same here; the subtitles cut off at irregular intervals, and I had to leave the show on pause for about five minutes when it was only in its title sequence, because it had to buffer. Looks like their bandwidth is not yet what it should be.

We've had it (as a free trial) in the house for about a month or so, and the few things I've watched on it al had the same issues. The library is still very spartan, in the sense that there's very little there drawing my interest.  And those things I would maybe watch (again), I've long had the DVD/Blue-ray of anyway.

I saw the first episode, and had a good time, but now that I have to start paying for the service, I've decided against it. It's good, but it's not €6,99 per month good.

Then again; to be fair, Netflix had the same issues back when it started out over here, so I'm sure D+ will improve over time. Me, I will probably end up buying the DVD/Blue-ray boxed seasons...

Post by: Elbows on November 16, 2019, 03:35:49 AM
I watched it and thought it was decidedly...okay?  A few cool moments, but I think I was expecting more gritty/dark...and then remembered this is a PG-13 Disney franchise thing now.

Story seemed a bit abrupt, and I found the general sets and costumes are bit too clean/fake dirty (but I was watching it on my brother's mega-TV so that highlights all of the tiniest things - it'd probably be better on a slightly lower definition screen).

Werner was a neat surprise.  The highlight was the animation of the droid.  Was not engrossed (and didn't run to my brother's place to watch the second episode this evening!).

I'd say if you're not currently able to view it, you're not missing out.  It's a neat Star Wars show, but nothing breath-taking.  A few months won't hurt.

While the Guardian got it wrong on Rogue One and Solo it hits the mark on the Mandalorian. It started really slow, has an expressionless main character and picks up absolutely no speed in episode 2. And it has a Deus ex machina alien. The next episode will probably be third strike and out.....

About this second episode, I like it a lot. This is Star Wars at the beginning, Spaghetti Western with good music.

Isn't that name, "Mando," meant to be a derisive name for Mandalorian, like calling a Pakistani a Paki?  No offense meant, just using this as an example.

I mean, Boba Fett always looked cool but really what did he do?  Where does the reputation come from?
One thing my buddy pointed out to me, that I never noticed, is that he is the only character to talk back to and make demands of Darth Vader.

Not Mandalorian-related, but Star Wars news today is that Benioff and Weiss have left the franchise and are not going to be doing their trilogy now.
Sorry, but who are these folks?

For fans of standup comedy, Bill Burr will be a guest in one episode - the latest trailer has a shot of him blasting away (bald redhead).
That's AWESOME!!!  GREAT choice!

I think he could have also played Becket.  Woody Harrelson was great but Burr could have also been a blast.

Watched episodes 1 & 2 last night with my wife.
I enjoyed it, but was mainly watching the scenery.
My wife enjoyed it & she wasn't watching scenery.
We plan to watch more.

Not sure if you are joshing or not, but those are the idiots that ruined GoT>
They were going to do a SW trilogy but have backed out stating it would interfere with their Netflix things.

I'm absolutely loving this show just now! 8) It may be early days yet, but so far it sets the perfect tone between respecting the old material, but giving us something brand new. Its also a perfect mix of story, action and comedy for me.

.....also great gaming material! ;)

I actually never heard of them.  I only made it to the point where The Mountain was almost killed by the gay, Spanish, kung-fu guy and Arya skewered a kneeling guy through the neck with that narrow sword of hers.

Did these guys come along afterwards?

No time for TV, unfortunately, between raising kids, working in Silicon Valley, and making 2-4 new minis per week.   :)

Nope they created the show, or at least adapted the books into the show, but they were the showrunners from start to finish, it's funny that they were praised for what they did with the show until the last season, when they suddenly become those idiots that ruined GOT.

Saw episodes one and two on the weekend and really liked them.

Very referential to the source material - the only thing missing was blue milk.

I have heard and read that it is incredibly slow moving, and the episodes are very short.

Best quip I've seen is a bartender asking who Amanda Lorean is?

Thought that was worth a grin.

Pedro Pascal - really good Chilean/American actor. He's Agent Pena in 'Narcos'.

As well as Agent Whiskey in Kingsman.

Incredibly slow? Not my experience. And a show cant be jamming all the time. Dont know of any series or movie that is.
And the episodes are just as short as any other show is minus the commercials.
But i would like more minutes per episode that is for sure.
Have seen all seven episodes thus far. Loving each and every one.

Went to see Rise of Skywalker a few days ago. Left the theater thinking that was dumb.
Watched the season finale of Mandalorian today and was left thinking that was cool.
Can't wait for the next season.

Have only see episodes 1-4 so far but I concur that it' better than the latest SW film.

Lego, no fools, sent out their latest catalogues over the break and the Little Fish are not that interested in any of the episode 9 tie-in stuff but are keen to get a box of Mandalorian warriors.

Interestingly the red-clad Sith Troopers and Dorito-Wing TIE fighters didn't register with them even after seeing them (briefly) on the big screen but the Mandalorians (who had a actual role in the story and not just the marketing) did.

I watched the last two episodes last night and really enjoyed them.  For me they have a sort of old-school Saturday tea-time TV serial vibe, which I like.  I also thought the music was great throughout the series, nice to hear something different.

For me this is the best SW stuff to come out since a long time ago.  Excited to see the Clone Wars TV series is also soon to be completed - it built to an excellent cliff hanger, and now we finally get to see the finale.

I was disappointed in the last movie, but these series show there is life in the old franchise yet and plenty of gaming fuel!
