Hi All,
I've been more than a little remiss lately when it comes to keeping everyone posted about progress. I had a rather unfortunate and at the time potentially very serious injury early in the summer, which set me back quite a lot, however I'm now all but fully recovered and trying to catch up on all fronts. The updates should be far more frequent from now on ::)
For starters here are five of the six figures from each of the two upcoming packs of La Marine in winter coats; FIW FCF11: Compagnies Franches de la Marine in capotes and bonnets, and FIW FCF12: Compagnies Franches de la Marine in capotes and tuques. One figure from each of these two packs is currently being completed, both of these have been designed with a separate hand and musket.

Looking good, Lance (am putting them on my shopping list!) and glad you’re on the road to recovery! (Hope your feet have recovered from last weekend as well!)
Keep smiling mate ;)

Excellent stuff Lance, glad to hear you are fit and well. Looking forward to the next releases, the Stockbridge boys in particular. :)

Lovely stuff :-*
-
Didn't know you had had a problem Lance. Glad to hear you are well on the mend.
(Pikeman Pete).
I was taking to one of the pupils, at the school I work at, about you & your nice figures,
(we have a wargames club, we have started playing Rebels & Patriots, & he has chosen
Americans & I suggested some of your very nice Woods Indians for a skirmish unit)
-
Thanks Pete, an unfortunate incident with poorly maintained kit, not belonging to me, I didn't say much as I thought it best that way.
For AWI we also sell the King's Mountain range, and a good many use our Anglo-American Militia and Settlers Defending for the period ;)
Our 18th Century Sailors are ideal for Royal Navy and American. :D
Cheers,
Lance

Hello Lance, your model lines for the FIW conflict are wonderful. Have many of them, and enjoy war-gaming with them quite a bit. Looking forward to your new releases, and glad you have made a recovery.

Hi Lance , were there just 7 packs in your 2nd kickstarter or am I missing something in your shop?

A closer picture of those Stockbridge chaps :D
The Stockbridge Mohicans were descended from Housatonic and Mahican Indians who settled at Reverend John Sergeant's mission and school at Stockbridge, western Massachusetts, established in the 1730s. They were one of the more "assimilated tribes" wearing much European-style clothing and living in towns of board houses, many attending church and school.
From the beginning of the French & Indian War they served in warrior bands, but also within provincial regiments and ranger companies. Captain Jacob Cheeksaunkun raised a company of 45 "Stockbridges" with Lieutenant Jacob Naunauphtaunk and Ensign Soloman Uhauamvaumut.
The Stockbridge Mohicans' day-to-day Europeanised appearance was considered to be less intimidating to the enemy, and, in common with the Mohegans of Connecticut, they were ordered to revert to their traditional Indian wear for war. They were issued muskets, powder horns and bullet bags, shirts and blankets; they wore centre-seam leggings and moccasins. In ranger companies they were issued the same equipment as their fellow rangers. Hair styles varied from a simple scalp-lock to worn long. The strips of red cloth tied around the barrels of their muskets were an expedient to avoid incidents of "friendly fire". Piercing appears not to have been much in evidence, if at all, paint and tattooing were not common.
There will be three packs each of six different Stockbridge Mohicans, as well as my take on Captain Jacob Cheeksaunkun, dressed in the same style as his men, distinguished as an officer by his silver gorget and proudly sporting his presentation red ostrich plume - on the left in the white shirt in the above picture.

Very interesting stuff the Stockbridge Indians. I have always wondered how exactly they connected (if at all) with Cooper's celebrated Mohicans. Did the latter exist?
A small point for the french marines party builders (and for any regular french army unit of the time): the cadet à l'aiguillette was also called an anspessade, if I remember well.
And if you happen to have painted french heavy cavalry troopers (not dragoons or hussars): call them by their real name: each one was a Maître, not a Cavalier-cavalryman-horse trooper. Call them Masters if you will.

Philippe
Hi Philippe,
I don't know whether Chingaskook and Uncas were real names that James Fenimore Cooper borrowed, but they certainly were not the last of that nation - dramatic licence I suspect ;)
The Stockbidge Mohicans sides with the rebel cause in the AWI, which didn't leave them in a good place in the new United States after the war with the further rise of "Anti-Indianism" and a popular policy of acquisition of Indian lands. The Mohawk fared far better by moving up to Canada with their Loyalist friends.

After the long delays of last year, we’re almost there with the Compagnies Franches de la Marine second stage figures. The photograph shows (almost) the last batch of sculpts, comprising, left to right: rear first 2, the last figure for each of the two packs of soldiers in capotes (hands with muskets are the separate castings at the front); next to them in the rear is one of the 2 figures needed to complete the loading pack – cocking his lock; the first 6 on the left of the front row are the full pack of soldiers advancing; to the right of them is the other figure to complete the loading pack – blowing away loose grains of powder from his lock; the 4 figures on the right complete the firing pack; the remaining 2 figures in the rear are officers for the command pack.
All these are away for master casting at the moment, that leaves just 2 figures to finish sculpting: the drummer and an officer/ensign for the command pack, which are currently on my sculpting bench along with the remaining figures from our third Kickstarter: Allies on the Frontier, more on these soon.
Cheers,
Lance

The photograph shows a batch of sculpts which are away for master casting at the moment, comprising, left to right: the first 2 figures are Stockbridge Mohicans from the Command & Characters pack, the next 3 are for the first 2 Rangers / Backwoods Militia packs, the next 3 are more for the Rangers / Backwoods Militia in Shirts pack (these shirts are early hunting shirts without capes or fringing, basically a labourer’s smock worn over the shirt and often the waistcoat); the last 3 figures in this picture are more of the Provincials in cut-down hats.
The rest of the sculpts to complete Allies on the Frontier are currently on my sculpting bench in various stages of progress, along with the last 2 figures from the stretch-goals of the Compagnies Franches de la Marine.

Messrs Braddock, Monro and Abercrombie would most likely have begged to differ from you.
But you may catch a time machine and try that line in 1757 in a tavern filled with French regulars if you feel like it :D

Actually, my late father was a bit of a sportsman. He once played football for a British armed forces team against Italy in front of a crowd of 60,000 and he boxed 2 and a bit rounds against Freddie Mills (Dad was then stopped). He told me that the most scary sporting experience he ever had was at school playing hockey against a local girls school team. He said that some of the girls wielding hockey sticks were absolutely terrifying.

Why does a mental image of the old St. Trinians' films pop into mind.

A figure for pack SYW/FIW F8 Fusiliers standing, halted on the march 1 of the Les francais Kickstarter.
I painted a master casting of a fusilier from a different pack in a different regimental uniform last weekend, then flocked and photographed it last night. I then had to edit down from the dozens of pictures I had taken from various angles and lit in several different ways, to end up with the ones I'm showing above.

Lots of great news, Lance! Tell me when to wait for the remaining Marine kits to be sent out?
Further Compagnies Franches de la Marine packs should be ready soon-ish. :-)
-
The next French figures I'm really hoping somebody will make are Bombardiers de la Marine armed with muskets and side satchels for carrying lots of powder fuse. These would be the best poses for them for skirmish gaming as they never actually brought cannons with them when they were sent out in the field; on raids they were more like elite combat engineers with a specialty in pyrotechnics.
In orders of battle, you'll see a couple of hundred Bombardiers listed, but with no guns. On these missions, their job is to set fire to boats and forts, etc.

My rough and ready sketch for the French mounted senior officer, I haven't yet fully concluded how I'm going to treat the dismounted version other than he'll have armed himself with one of or both his saddle pistols. This mounted/dismounted senior officer pack is one of those now available for pledges as part of the first set of stretch goals since the Les Francais Kickstarter hit our initial target. :)

TRYING OUT 8 FIGURE ALTERNATIVE PACKS FOR REGULARS.
I've been getting an increasing number of requests for 8 figure packs for regulars, and have decided to try one out.
The first pack I'm trying this out with is:
SYW/FIW B10.8 British Hat Company Firing Line
These are not new figures, but a differently structured version of the figures from pack SYW/FIW B10 British Line Infantry - Skirmishing, with 2 of each of the firing soldiers and all 4 different loading postures, in this case enabling equally proportioned units to be shown firing either by rank or platoon, as well as (hopefully) proving helpful to gamers who want to add just one or a small number of regular units to their force.
I have also added a couple of unit deals based on this new pack.
If this proves popular, I'll look at expanding this to versions of some of the other regular packs :D

SYW/FIW B10.8 British Line Infantry Hat Company, Firing Line.

SYW/FIW BU2: 2 x SYW/FIW B10.8 British Line Infantry Hat Company, Firing Line, + British officer closing the frizzen of his fusil from pack SYW/FIW B8
(http://www.gallopingmajorwargames.com/userimages/B10.8.3web.jpg)
SYW/FIW BU3: 3 x SYW/FIW B10.8 British Line Infantry Hat Company, Firing Line, + British officer closing the frizzen of his fusil from pack SYW/FIW B8 and drummer from pack SYW/FIW B4.

Hi Major
Magnificent figure this Daniel!
You gave yourseld a great challenge, writing down this very long and tricky french name! and succeeded ... well almost: the last name is Beaujeu, not Beaujeau (unless you ment his half-brother de Beaujolais or Jojo for the ladies, flashy but much less known historicaly sadly!).

Hello All,
Sorry I haven't been updating in here for some long time. I've been having a "fun time" setting up and building our new website, due to our previous host company having been bought out by another concern who created no end of difficulties, the last straw being when their "security" failed to meet Paypal's requirements! >:( Of course, I should have set about this sooner, but hindsight is a wonderful thing :)
Anyway, the new site has been running on www.gallopingmajorwargames.co.uk (http://www.gallopingmajorwargames.co.uk) for several weeks now, but after some delays we now have the www.gallopingmajorwargames.com address secured and both addresses will now take you to the new site.
The shop system with our new host is far easier to search; there are still a few features I need to add, including the Painting Guides (more on this in the weeks to come) but I hope everyone will find the new site to be a big improvement :D
So, onwards and upwards, I've waited to start posting again until I have some pretty pictures to liven it up.
I've allowed myself a little painting time on a handful of the master castings for upcoming releases.
One from each of the Stockbridge Mohican packs,
(https://ksr-ugc.imgix.net/assets/030/107/904/27203293ab055e36d9ffd99332c5153a_original.jpg?ixlib=rb-2.1.0&w=700&fit=max&v=1596811395&auto=format&frame=1&q=92&s=acb9732aacfabf46d3b7b49287106c60)
and two Rangers from pack FIW RAN6. The Rangers in this pack are depicted as wearing the hunting shirts of the period, which were the working overshirt popular among "working men" of various trades to protect their shirts and small clothes from dirt and wear. During the 1770s, with the addition of capes and fringing, the hunting shirt would develop into the garment which would be recognisable during the American Revolution (American War of Independence) and on into the early decades of the 19th Century. The much more plain shape of the linen over-garment worn by the Rangers in this pack would be familiar on both sides of the Atlantic when worn loose by farmers and josskins (waggoners), taking on a more martial air when held in with a waist belt and accoutrement slings.

Provincials in short coats and cut down hats will be released in the next few weeks. There will be 10 different figures in the release: a standard 6 figure pack, a 3 figure pack of a corporal and 2 men, and a single figure sergeant, allowing for combinations to make up different unit sizes, there will also be some unit deals available.
The figures in these packs of Provincials also vary in some items of equipment and their "leg wear", some have mitasses, others just their hose, and one has his regulation issue gaiters.

Thanks Craig :D they're on their way, don't forget to paint the pieces of cloth round the muzzles red, they were used to reduce incidents of "friendly fire" ;D

I'll probably return to the subject of that Ranger command character's unit/uniform, as I've painted him, later - there may be some interest ::)
Meanwhile, here are the 3 chaps I've painted so far from another new Ranger pack FIW RAN6

Could he be a Gorham Ranger?
-
Could he be a Gorham Ranger?
A very good guess Dave 8), the brown coat points in that direction, but the lesser known unit I'm thinking of are described as wearing brown coats and green waistcoats - I did mention them in my (now defunct with the old .com website) Rangers Painting Guide very briefly. When I get time I'll re-format the painting guides and I expect this chap will appear in it.
Cheers,
Lance

I don't often put up offers, but I've put a 10%-15% discount on most of the packs and all the unit deals for the British Regulars, ending 28th May.

I've put up a temporary discount of over 15% on Unit Deal FIW BPU4, £22.00 usual price £26.00
We've found ourselves with a temporary over-stock of these Anglo-American Provincials (my fault - my reminder of quantity to be cast was taken as an additional quantity ::) and I didn't have the heart to reject them :)), so we're offering them at a nice discount for a short while.

Following on at length with the Compagnies Franches do la Marine in capotes:
Here are the first 4 painted, the first 3 are from pack FIW FCF11, the fourth from FIW FCF12. I still need to get some matt varnish on them and flock the bases - one or two decisions to be made before the flocking :)
They're not in the website shop yet, just on the Studio page (see the link below), but I will be adding them in soon, possibly as a pre-order deal of two packs along with the officer. Temporarily I have limited numbers of castings available (ordering more in) but I'll take a modest supply to Vapnartak in York on Sunday 6th February.
Cheers,
Lance

My earlier photos of the packs showed only 5 figures, the 6th figure from each of the packs FIW FCF11 and FIW FCF12 has a separate hand and musket casting to plug into the end of the right sleeve, here they both are.
