Title: [KICKSTARTER] Reaper Bones 5 kickstarter
Post by: beefcake on September 27, 2019, 10:36:47 PM
Starting 1 October.
I'm keeping my eyes open for this. Hopefully some more nice big monsters to add to the pile.

Yups, the big guys are why I buy bones. Any human sized model that has proper detail is a nice surprise, but on the whole I prefer those in metal.
Let's hope for some stunning terrain, giants, dragons, basic monsters and of course awfully weird & nasty things  :D

Yep, I usually get the full deal and spread the little guys out amongst my children to practice painting on and play with.

I've not seen anything myself but I've not really been looking. It starts in 16 hours so there won't be long to wait to see in any case.

A couple of interesting models. The Encounter on Trolls' Bridge, Townsfolk ( those 2 are add-ons ), Catfolk, Dread Wolves, the Zombie Giant. Nice...

I'm all in at the moment but will probably drop down and just pick up a few bigger things unless the basic set has some absolutely lovely things in it. If they do more Hill Giants I'll be in for that.

I was really happy to see that there was very little of interest to me. Temptation resisted!

And I have finished all of four miniatures from Bones I...  ::)

I don't see much focus in their Cave Dwellers add-on set. A little bit of everything, not so much a theme. But probably enough to get me the set and swap/sell/give away the models I don't like. But tbh, I'm getting tired of the small rubbish like kobolds, goblins etc. It doesn't work in bones, way to tiny for good detail and the swords/polearms/bows are way to fiddly to clean up. And besides, they inevitably come out bent so you'll have to do the hot/old water trick and hope for the best. Totally not worth it imho.

I like the smaller figures... the latest are made of a harder plastic and don't have as much issues as the ones from KS 1 to 3

Big models are a great values in any Bones KS... much cheaper than when they hit the general sales...

Could you expand a little on this?
If this is a kickstarter then what is the expected completion date?
Also, if this is an ‘add on”, what is it adding to?  I know there are items that Reaper do which would fit with the Greek myths but they seem to be randomly placed amongst other miniatures in their range.  Is there a group of Greek myth minis that these are adding to?

The sculpts look good so I am interested but I have nil knowledge of Reapers Kickstarter programme.

It will be part of the current KS, which ends the end of the month IIRC, but doesn't fulfill for a year or so afterwards. Lock-in for pledges is August 30 2020 or something like that.

The KS has a Core Set, plus various small add-ons, and then typically has one or more supplemental thematic sets. It looks like this year there is a Dungeon Expansion, and Asian-themed expansion, a Greek Expansion and an Undersea Expansion.

Last time the expansions were $50 add-ons, and the core set was $100. This year I think the core set is $120. I haven't noticed if the expansion prices have gone up or even if they've been shown yet.

Also: because they have so many backers they divide them up into waves for each mailing region. Each wave has a later fulfillment date than the previous. When I tried to back this KS, the wave I was trying to back had filled up before I had managed to sign in!

At the end of the KS they will charge my card as usual but I will have until the end of August next year to add on or make changes to my pledge.

The first two add-ons are 50$ also this year. The Core Set has gone up by 20$ compared to last KS Core set which was indeed 100$

Thanks to Sir Barnaby for the additional information.

In common with a fair number of war gamers, I tend to have a butterfly mentality, so will likely have moved my interests on from the Greek myths by the time these minis appear.

Hats off to all of those involved in the kick starter.  I envy your forward planning and patience.

I've never signed up for one of these, so I thought I'd dive in.  I admit the core has  many figs of limited value to me (especially the kid hero sets), but it is an adventure.

Being in Belgium, I expect my wallet to get whacked with pretty awful duty... Any one have experience with receiving these on the continent pre-Brexit?

My stuff from Bones 1 is still in the box it came in.

Pretty sure you can get just extras, if you want.
i.e. use the $1 pledge then add what you want in the pledge manager.

This said, love the greek mith options. Plenty of uses (OGaM, Broken Legions...)

Or just wait and pick up the single figures you want later when they're released? :D

I didn't buy in to any of the reaper kickstarters and I regretted it at the time, but now I'm glad I didn't; it's a few less pounds of crushing weight of unpainted miniatures for me to deal with :D

I jumped in for a $1 and will probably go for the Greek mythic stuff and a few bigger add ons (dragons and the War mammoth)

That said I got the Lost Valley stuff (which is very nice) on the last KS and haven't done anything with it....

Remember, you don't have to pledge for the core.  Just pledge at the 1 dollar level, but add money up to what you want.  That's what I did for Bones 4, and in the pledge manager you can add even more stuff.

I've backed 3 previous Bones kickstarters - their EU shipping hub is in the UK but they are talking about arranging a Brexit-proof one in Germany.  Last year shipping for a large box containing the Core set and 2 Expansions plus other bits and pieces (about 250 minis, some dragons, giants and a really large Ent) was €20, with the only duty being your national VAT (around 20%). It's very good value as these things go.

As noted above, minimum pledge is $1, and Expansions like the fantasy greek-themed set are $50 each.

What is the new bones black like? I've not had any experience with it, but have really struggled getting a decent paint job on the original bones stuff, also not keen on the bendyness.

The black stuff is much better - much more like hard plastic. It has far crisper detail than the original stuff and - crucially - far fewer mouldlines. It also responds much better to drybrushing. I painted these in about an hour and enjoyed the exprience much more than painting the original stuff:

This is a bones black I have painted a few weeks ago.

I have greenstuffed where arms connect to shoulders. I found the process easier than with regular bones, where their bendy nature makes greenstuff harder to stick.

Original Bones really need a good washing up ( dishwasher soap ) before priming/painting/puttying. Without it's both a greasy and sticky material. But it holds detail pretty well, is easy to clean up mouldlines with a small round modelling file, pretty happy with it. The major problem I have with it is the bendyness of polearms, small weapons. Don't want to do the hot/cold water trick ten times over and hope for the best...
Good kickstarter ntw, this one. Many interesting and original models.  :)

I'm exited about this KS, some excellent models in the basic set and great add-ons. Also happy they keep on using "grey" bones for their bigger monsters, not a fan of the black bones material. Reaper seems to be using that for their human sized models but I'm not sure if it will catch all the fine detail and the cleaning can also be a bit of a pain. Ah well, can't have it all ;-).

The ship is a work in progress but currently 37 inches long including the bowsprit, 9 inches wide at its widest. 32 inches of playable deck space. In the video if you look close you can see minis aboard for scale.

ABS plactic... is that the same plastic as the shipping container and dumpster of KS2 ???

For those interested the 360o render of the ship, in the video linked above, start at 28:25 and again at 57:50 running time... really cool projet IMHO... suposed to 100$ in the KS, so not too bad  ;D
