Title: Fun with Cry Havoc Scenarios
Post by: Chris Abbey on September 30, 2019, 02:45:51 PM
Yesterday Doug and I got together for a little medieval skirmish gaming. We had both been big fans of Cry Havoc (a medieval skirmish board game by Standard Games & Publications) when it had first came out..probably about 30 years ago. Cry Havoc had some great scenario ideas, which were so much more fun than the line-up and advance to contact games that so often get played when time is short. We therefore decided that it would be a lot of fun to take the Cry Havoc scenarios and adapt the for medieval skirmish gaming.

The Knight Errant scenario takes place in a village that has been terrorized by a company of marauding mercenary soldiers who have been threatening the villagers with dire punishment if they do not pay with both money and 'in kind'.

A goodly wandering knight, Sir Richard had heard of the villager’s plight and has encouraged the villagers to stand up to the bullies. The mercenaries have decided to teach the villagers a lesson.

We played the game out using a play test version of Feudal Patrol, Buck Surdus upcoming rule system for Ancient, Dark Age, Medieval and Fantasy.

I've added a full write up with loads more photos to my hobby blog @ http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Pages/Hobby-Blog/Feudal-Patrol?fbclid=IwAR0gBeUSscxIKqbolIO9A0OjiZ3bnmhVGGwxsmb7t8BR9oVEuwzE-6mp8Zs (http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Hobby-Pages/Hobby-Blog/Feudal-Patrol?fbclid=IwAR0gBeUSscxIKqbolIO9A0OjiZ3bnmhVGGwxsmb7t8BR9oVEuwzE-6mp8Zs)

I also have fond memories of Cry Havoc,
and their Samurai version. The boards were very nice,
and often could be matched up to make a larger playing area.

Great stuff! I have fond memories of Outremer, which I think was by the same company? It also had a great campaign system.

Ah God, yes, I used to love Cry Havoc. I’m afraid to say it was probably nearer 40 years ago though  ::)
I’ve still got Samurai Blades, but must have divested myself of the original Cry Havoc at some point in the dim and distant past. Brilliant little game, and some lovely characters and scenarios  :)

Are the Cry Havoc scenarios available anyplace?  I am doing some Medieval skirmish gaming with Fistful of Lead. Scenarios would be very helpful.

Smirnoff, thanks, but it seems to be formatted for Microsoft Office, which I do not have.

Thanks for the tip, I'm always on the lookout for a source for scenarios.

I think the scenario books etc are Word documents, but you can open them up with pretty much any word processor like Libra Office for example.

They are pdfs Nick, download a reader and you are sorted. I tried to attached the pdf but it's too big for the forum limits (4000k)

I sold off Cry Havoc, Siege, Viking Raiders, and Outremer years ago - but I kept the two scenario books for exactly this reason - there are some really neat ideas in there and they play well with any skirmish rules for Medievals (Song of Blades or En Garde would work just great, I suspect)

Happy memories of an opponent I suckered into shooting his own most powerful knight in the back with a crossbow! That apart, however, the combat system was a disaster in those games; a peasant with a pointed stick had at least twice the chance of wounding an attacking knight that the knight had of wounding him!

In fact the additional scenarios are from this page.

http://www.cryhavocfan.org/eng/suite/booklets/chbooklet.htm (http://www.cryhavocfan.org/eng/suite/booklets/chbooklet.htm)

These are RTF - Rich Text Files so should open in any word processor.

Do you think anyone else would be interested in bases like I've been using with engraved names and types?
I just made them for my own games really, but could make available if there was any interest.

Must admit Chris, I try avoid shiny plastic bits on the tabletop as it spoils the overall look for me - just personal taste, you know :)
The clear bases are very neatly done though.
However, given that we're only talking about a handful of figures for each side in a skirmish, I always tend to go the other route and have an off-table card with each character's pic and name on it, plus stats etc.
But I'm sure there are plenty of people who would go for the inscribed bases.

As the option of, 'putting the name underneath the base' is not available, and as long as they are not too expensive,
I think there would be a small market for them. I would be interested in a few, as I like to do a personality figure
for friends every so often, a Sci-Fi one, a fantasy one, a Napoleonic one, a Western one etc. etc. (good job I have so few friends.)

Nice looking game. I always did regret selling off my copy of Cry Havoc so thanks for the links, I can see a lot of use for those in my Baron’s War diversion.

Glad you found it useful.
I love those Cry Havoc Scenarios and look forward to trying them all with miniatures.

I have just posted a You Tube video looking at the terrain that I am building for these games.

Last week Lewis and I had another great play test game of Buck's Feudal Patrol medieval skirmish rules.
Once again we choose a scenario from the Cry Havoc, Additional Scenarios Book.

This time the scenario played was Foraging Party. Lewis played Sir Richard tasked with getting his horses fed, and his command back to friendly lines in one piece. I played Sir Williams raiding party, whose mission was to steal as many horses and slay as many knights as they could while minimizing there own losses.

The scenario was a lot of fun. I really like these small scale skirmish actions.

Lush terrain and figures  :)
It’s purely a personal view but I do find the Perspex bases a little off-putting in a medieval setting - good for sci-fi, maybe not for other periods?

Well clear bases are very much personal preference, and people tend to love them or hate them.
Personally, I base all single based miniatures on clear bases and multi-based miniatures on landscaped bases. The reason for this is that I like the miniatures to blend with the terrain they are standing on. About 4 years ago, I was setting up a photo shoot for an advert in Wargames Illustrated. We had just released a set of warehouse / industrial modular terra-block terrain, and I was setting it out for a 1920's Gangster shot. The terrain looked fantastic, the miniatures looked fantastic but something looked really wrong, and that was that some miniatures were standing on floorboards, some on stone floor, some on the ground outside but they were all dragging around with them a little round ornamental garden!!! I got my handy yellow handled GW clippers and destroyed the landscaped bases very quickly, mounted the figures on clear perspex and have never looked back.

Even if you have figures that are only going to be used on green grassy terrain, sooner or later they are going to stand on a road, a building or maybe some one elses wargames terrain that uses a different color grass, so that's why I use them.
