Title: Blood & Plunder Aar and new miniatures (11.11.) + pics from the second game
Post by: Olofeus on October 20, 2019, 06:36:35 PM
Today I played my first amphibious scenario of the game. It was a real blast. The objective was to plunder the two cabins on the beach. My Anglo-French Brethen of the Coast was attacking and My buddy was defending with Spanish Guarda Costa.
One unit of Spanish militia was guarding the beach and a longboat full of militia together with a light frigate was the relief force.
The attackers had two longboats filled with boucaniers, filibusters, freebooters and marins and a sloop.

The first two turns we were maneuvering the ships to firing positions as the longboats tried get to the shore. The spanish ship fired a broadside, but failed to hit the sloop.
On the third turn the Anglo-French longboats hit the beach. The Sloop fired its cannon at the Spanish longboat managing to damage it and then promptly rammed the boat. The long boat started to sink. The light frigate managed to get a lucky hit to sloop causing a leak on the front deck.

However on the forth turn the cunning Spanish captain tacked his ship through the wind's eye and unleashed the other broadside at point-blank range causing a devastating 13 points of damage to the sloop. The poor sloop got multiple leaks and a fire. The French captain had to run the ship aground to escape death by drowning.

In the end the Brethen managed to land troops and drive away the Spanish guarding the beach, but doing that they had lost their sloop which was reduced to integrity of 1, run aground and sunk.

As I said in the beginning of the post: It was a real fun game. However I'm not sure how to count the strike points for the ship. We counted three strike points for the sloop. One for having it's hull reduced to less than half, one for running aground and one for sinking. If it was not right, it sure was thematic as the Anglo-French coalition escaped through the jungle and the Guarda Costa patrolled the coastline.

Great looking game.
We found B&P bogs down a bit when you have ship and land combat (and it's also a bit clunky having to keep track of activations)
How long did this take to play out?

The game took a little over three hours with deployment. It was 250 points.

Cheers

Lovely game.
I played a lot of B and P when it first came out.
Could not get any of the guys I play with, to buy in and paint a few figures.
Not interested came the reply.
So I stopped setting up games.
That has happen number of times in the last few years.
Time to find some new guys.

Funny how playing the game speeds up painting. These had been waiting to be finished for a couple of weeks.
After the game they were ready in two days. Not my best, but ok enough for gaming. I really like painting Firelock game's miniatures. They are simple yet very thematic and good looking.

They are really very nicely painted. Vibrant which suits the setting.

I have been trying not to be seduced by this game and the phenomenal minis for a while. I was thinking of doing a Minor Nations: Portugese force. Colonial Portugal is really interesting.

Eager to see them in action! Cheers!

I like the minis but not the strange bent-kneed poses some of them have.

A few days ago we played the same scenario again with  a few tweaks in the force composition (now 325 points per side), deployment (The longboats started nearer the shoreline) and terrain (more jungle on the land and a small island in the middle).

It was even more fun than the first time. This time we switched sides, so I was in command of the Guarda Costa and My friend was playing the Brethen. He won again. I have to admit, his seamanship is much better than mine. At least this time I didn't totally wreck my ship. The pirate sloop managed to score two lucky hits to the frigate on the first turn. One damaged the rudder of the ship and the other carried to the mast and rigging destroying the main mast. (I know lucky hits take a -1 one to the roll, but it was already applied to the first roll carrying the hit to the mast and rigging. And when my friend rolled a 10 on that critical table, it was clear that the mast was destroyed).

I really like the sea battles in Blood & Plunder!

Love your setup.
I really like how the sea battles play out.
Lots of fun combining sea with land fighting.

Would you please discuss your beach terrain and how you managed the waves, etc.  Imitation is a form of flattery and I would definitely like some shore terrain like this to use in my games.  Thanks!

Agreed that the sea/sand confluence is very well done.  But clearly the main sea mat is a commercial product witnessed by the imprint in the top left corner in the first photograph.  Not sure if the beach mat is also commercial or an adaptation to match (there is a minor color variation between the two sea mats but that might be from age difference, batch difference, lighting, or close color matching or some combination of all of that).

What makes the confluence work so well is the sand is dry (lighter), damp (a little darker), and wet (darkest) as it goes from tree line to water line.  And then that very nice set of surf lines with, maybe (could just be shadows) the color variation in the surf from white to a 'sandy' white which is very realistic since surf mixes with sand when crashing to shore.

So, yes, please let us know about either how it was done or source of mats if commercial.

The sea bit says 'deep cut studios', and they make a beach mat which looks identical to the one in the report.
So I'd say that is two Deepcut mats

You are absolutely right Sir. They are indeed from Deep Cut Studios.

Certainly a gorgeous game, and delighted to hear the person who lost talking about how much fun was had!

I backed both kickstarters, but have done nothing - nothing! - to prepare miniatures or ships for play.  Thanks for the inspiration!

I like how your miniatures turned out. I wish I had used a brighter palette on some of mine.

Thank You all for the compliments. Here is another batch of miniatures that I managed to base today. They are nothing too special, just a nice addition to my collection.

Great work. Thanks for sharing. I have many of my pirates painted up but have only played one game with them so far. I need some opponents...
