Title: Power Armor in SMF2?
Post by: boywundyrx on October 25, 2019, 02:20:50 PM
Hi all,

I upgraded my editions of SMF and Supersystem recently (M&M podcast tends to do that to my wallet) and have been merrily statting up the Heroclix I have for SMF2, initially working from the great thread of ratings folks have put together on this board.  I'll get some of mine up once I digitize my scribbles.  My TMNT ratings are the most unique thing I've done so far.

Last night I was working on the first power armored figure I have, Box of Alpha Flight.  He's been rated here for 1st edition, using what would now be the Construct archetype in 2nd edition, but I feel in his case that'd be best for the early versions of him, where's really more of a remotely controlled drone.  In later versions, the human phases into the PA, so Soulless etc. doesn't really work.  So as a first take I used the Wildcard archetype he was rated in for SMF1 and swapped the Construct power for Armor, but I'm not sure that's the best way to represent PA.  Brick doesn't have the minor powers a lot of PA (Iron Man, that Russian one) would want, so I think some combination under Wildcard is best.  I can see using Powerhouse or maybe Super for Iron Man, but the other PAs feel more like regular supers, rather than the upgraded ones.

Anyone else have some thoughts on that?  I haven't seen an Iron Man rating around to get a baseline with.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,  this is a great question and I can see what you mean.  In an attempt to re-state your question for my own clarification, How do you represent (in game) both the strength and the power versatility normally demonstrated by many Power Armored characters in the comics?  Especially if you want to keep the character a standard archetype.  That's a tough one.  I have not yet tried to construct Iron Man in SMF, but, initially, I think your thoughts of a Brick Super would be the best start.

I'm surprised I'm the first reply you've gotten on this topic.  Have you had further thoughts on this since your original post?

For Iron Man I might be tempted to go with the Controller archetype.

That way you can run the Power Pool major power, swapping powers in and out, and have Armor as the set minor power.

Anytime you can't recharge a power, it's attributable to the constant, plot-driven issues IM had with his various armors. With Trade-Offs you can add an extra minor power to the package, even grabbing minor Super-Strength from outside the package if you want.

That's one angle to go.

Dude...that's a great idea.   Yours is a more elegant solution (perhaps even THE solution).

Thanks for all the responses, I had statted up Box and IM, maybe a couple of other PAs by early November but then jumped projects, as I usually do.  I'll dig up what I did, but I like Scott's idea, at least for Iron Man, so they may be moot.

Cheers,
Chris
