This is part of an ambitious new project to make the most detailed 15mm range of English Civil War figures to date.
I know many many companies have done this range but like all great subjects I wanted to do my own take on it.
Further I have recently discovered I’m directly related to the Grenviles of the Cornish campaigns so I had to make the range!
This is a peak of one of my masters which is separate from the horse the figures are exactly 15mm from base of foot to top of skull.
All the horse masters are now done and I will show previews in the coming weeks.
Also I’m well on my way through the infantry masters.
I have previously only sculpted 28mm figures but really wanted to see larger units but without sacrificing detail.
This will be a very big range with lots of variety in each troop type so you can have truly grand sized units with the same detail as much larger figures.
There will be painting tutorials too so you can see how figures in this small size can be painted quite easily without a microscope!

He is lovely, all done to the quality will make for an excellent range.
True 15mm (none of this "to the eye crap") will match perfectly with the Matchlock and Testudo ECW/30yrs War ranges which are currently vie for the title of " most detailed 15mm range of English Civil War figures to date"
Beware though, ECW fans are second only to Napoleonic grognards for their feral desire to rip into anything they deem ahistoric or based on research they deem out of date.
-
That's a really nice sculpt. Cracking horse too. I'd be interested to see a foot soldier next to a scale in millimetres.
Not quite sure where the ECW grognard notion comes from, never come across it myself, theres so many unknowns about the conflicts that I don't think it could be possible to be a button counter.
As the owner of some fairly large Peter Pig armies, I'd be adding to my collection rather than buying whole armies (sorry!).
Some questions: pikes - cast on or open handed? Civilians? Siege engineers with siege lobster pot and solid tassets? Generic generals or named personalities, or both?
And good luck
-
Thanks for the comments
It is important to me to get them as accurate as I can so I have been doing a lot of research but time will tell if I get anything wrong!
I will post a foot figure soon next to a millimetre scale.
The pike will be open handed
And I will be including lots of personality figures too.
I will be doing siege engineers too but not in the first releases.
I want to keep certain aspects of what will make my range unique compared to other ranges under wraps for now though.
-
Thanks for the reply.
You might find some of my pictures (KeepYourPowderDry.co.uk) useful - look at museums under the ECW travelogue heading. Some interesting artefacts I haven't seen represented in any scale/figure size. Fish scale riding gauntlets; a fish scale upper arm guard; siege engineer armour; a siege hat (possible zischagge style nose guard).
-
That's a lovely sculpt. It reminds me a bit of the 28mm Perry Miniatures cuirassiers. I'd buy it if only it was 28mm.
-
Holy smoke Oliver, you have the yes of an eagle!!
They are really, really good :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
This all looks and sounds very promising.
-
A wonderful sculpt!
No problem at all in moving 'down scale' and I particularly love the horse pose.
Looking forward to seeing more!
Simon
-
A really cracking sculpt. I look forward to seeing the future releases.
-
Interesting start
-
Thanks again for all the positive input.

I will be sure to look into that thanks!
Here is another of my masters without ink as he is getting remoulded.
This time it is a member of the Oxford horse charging in Swedish style.
-
Another lovely sculpt. The rider's pose is, imho, very natural, with just the right amount of bend at the waist.

The range will be launched by Kickstarter early next year
Sounds wonderful - and will be anticipating the KS.
Will you be having a supporting website also - (for such things as hosting your painting tutorials)?

Thanks yes I’m in the process of organising a new website for the project.

Thanks I must say I fond of this one too!
Will post more soon....
-
Here is a new sculpt of another member of the Oxford horse with sword drawn in typical royalist fashion! He could be used as a parliamentarian of course depending on how you like your units, but he was designed as a royalist.
This is a first gen master figure and there are bits of adjustment needed before production and I will add a sash to him as well.
More soon!

Please keep the previews coming!
Question - what are you thinking of offering through your initial Kickstarter - (that is - unit or figure types, and/or the portion of what you eventually plan on releasing)?
Dave
-
He's another belter1
Good to see a zischagge on a trooper. Strange how so many textbooks says zischagges were 'rare' yet every museum with a civil war display/gallery has at least one on display
-
:-* :-* :-*

Just joined this forum. 15mm ECW is my favourite scale and period. I like Peter Pig, great to paint but some of the Matchlock range still look great for the authenticity of the poses. These first few castings look equally good. I would be very interested in a Kickstarter project although I am not sure I really understand it!

Thanks again for the encouragement

I’m planning on offering a good basic range in the Kickstarter with stretch goals expanding that.

Yes I agree there were plenty of them about, I have already made most types of cavalry helmet so you will the rest soon.

Thanks for you thoughts, the Kickstarter basically allows me the funding to get all the moulds made up front allowing customers to buy full armies without having to wait months while I wait for each release to break even.
There will be another figure soon!
-
Here is the next figure, an officer or well equipped trooper of the Oxford horse charging in the Swedish fashion with sword drawn.
This one has a rather more expensive zischagge than usual.
-
Another great sculpt - love the pose of rider and horse!
-
These are superb! Hard to believe that they are 15mm 8)
-
Thanks again for the comments
Here is another figure again Oxford horse, this time the sleeves are the hooped type though not a fictional stripy rugby shirt type! but a hooped buff coat.
-
I love the nice curls too...um....I mean, great facial sculpting! ;)
-
Very impressive.
-
These are truly outstanding, count me in!
-
These are extremely good - if I didn't have cabinets full of 2nd Generation Minifigs for this conflict, I would be sticking my hand into my pocket and pulling out my wallet already!
One small point, the raised foreleg on the trooper's horse (top of this page)- that is not a natural leg position for a horse, I'm afraid (Blue Moon also have a "goose-stepping" horse, but with the other foreleg). Otherwise, the horses are excellent, which bodes well for you - the biggest downfall of new ranges, in 15mm or 25/28mm, is that the manufacturer releases lots of decent infantry, but then you either have to wait ages for the cavalry, and/or when it does appear, the horses are often a let-down and ruin the range (Blue Moon is an example of this - their horses look like they are in a Fosse dance troop!).
-
Well I think I will be buying into this range, when are you hoping to launch the KS?
-
Thanks again for the support
I’m not sure yet exactly when the launch will be but they are coming on.

Thanks for your comments and advice, I took the pose from this picture it is just between the movement on two of them but I’m not an expert on the way horses were ridden in the period.
I may yet adjust that.

Here is a preview of a pikeman for the range.
-
He's nice. Any chance of a picture of him with a coin for scale?
Will you be doing pikemen with tassets, and unarmoured too?
-
These are fantastic figures and tempting enough to bring me back to 15mm... cannot wait for the kickstarter.
Stephen

OK as another person with a very large ECW collection, but a sucker for more figs... how do they compare size wise with Essex and old glory 15's? I have a smattering of others but my collection is mostly 20+ years old now. :)
They look nice figs so far.
For the KS I would recommend a side by side comparisons photo if possible. :) A bit of difference is fine though, as long as they are not too far off - like some of the xyston monsters in a couple of their ranges.

Here is a pic next to a piece of ruler the black spot is 15mm
-
Also yes I will make the first pike without tassets and then add tassets to the same figures
-
Thanks for adding a reference.
-
:-* :-* :-*
-
Well that's just confirmed it. Despite having a fairly large ECW collection it's definitely going to grow with these new pieces
-
Great pose, proportions and movement!!
-

I may yet adjust that.
The straightness of the leg itself is ok, but the leg needs to not come up quite so high - anything even close to horizontal looks like the horse is going to do itself a mischief, so maybe angle it down a little? As I said, the other horse poses look really good.
-
Amazing work and detail, especially at that scale.
-
Thanks again for all the support and sorry for the long period between posting.
Here are three more royalist horse.
The infantry dollies are well developed now and I will be starting to show more foot soon! The straightness of the leg itself is ok, but the leg needs to not come up quite so high - anything even close to horizontal looks like the horse is going to do itself a mischief, so maybe angle it down a little? Thanks for that I quite agree.

-
All nice, my favourite is the trooper on the right. Like the pose - makes a nice change from waving a sword in the air above your head.
-
Incredible for 15mm scale, nice to see you are adding sashes to many of them, a feature so overlooked in many ranges!
-
Sculpts with very nice poses, congrats!
I'll be following this thread with great interest!
-
All looking extremely good and promising - just this waiting game for them to be available is killing ;)
-
Thanks again for everyone’s positive comments!
Here is a Cuirassier that could also be used for thirty years war, he is using the Dutch tactic of trotting with a drawn pistol.
.All looking extremely good and promising - just this waiting game for them to be available is killing ;)
They will be out first half of this year 😁
-
I find they are well sculpted, historically accurate and with correct anatomy!
I really like them! Please, keep up the good job!
-
This is tremendous. If only it was 28mm!
-
Just keeps getting better. Hope we don’t have too long to wait
-
Another nice cuirassier. I think the trotting with pistol drawn pose is one of my favourite poses of the era, quite evocative.
On the question of sashes, sashes were pretty much the reserve of officers and the rich/nobility/minor gentry/very well to do, so probably limited to command groups and maybe a handful of troopers; widespread sash wearing is another Victorian fancydressification of the period. Same goes for blooming ostrich feathers in hats. British native bird feathers yes, ostrich no (maybe for nobles); unless all those Victorian paintings are correct and the wearing of ostrich feathers in hats is the reason that the British ostrich is extinct.
-
This project will shortly have an exciting announcement....
Also just painted up a couple of masters
-
They look super! :-* :-* :-*
-
Excellent really looking forward to the opportunity to get some
-
Nice to see them 'come alive'
-
The quality of 15mm figures is amazing these days.
-
Thanks for the continued support!
Here is another Cuirassier
-
Excellent action pose of horse and rider! :-* :-* :-*
-
Top drawer Oliver :-* :-* :-*
-
Is this what's just been announced as the Steel Fist 15mm ECW range?
If not, mods please delete or move my post to its own thread....

Yes - I can confirm that Oliver's sculpts are for the new Steel Fist Miniatures 15mm range.
Launch will be via a Kickstarter and we'll share news of that as soon as we can - hopefully in just a few days.
thanks for all the kind comments.

Nice to see the Kickstarter launched and steady progress hopefully a few more people will back this and make it happen

They're lovely chaps :-* :-* :-*

They are sublime. Well done Oliver and Simon. If, alas, I didn’t already have nigh on 300 Bicorne / Renegade 28mm ECW, I would be in like Flint :)
But I just can’t justify replicating it all in 15mm. Even though I once had both 25mm and 15mm Minifigs ECW armies... Anyone else remember the code ‘What y’all making there, Pete?’
-
Lovely miniatures, I wish you did your Italian Wars figures in 15mm
-
Thanks for the comments.
We are FUNDED - which is great and so many thanks for all the support.
We're adding Artillery to the Kickstarter release now, as stretched goal.
Should have some comparison pics with other 15mm ECW ranges up soon.
Simon.

Comparison of our ECW with other 15mm ranges.
Always interesting to see.
We are in the 'true 15mm' zone, measuring from foot to eye. We think that they'll mix OK with Peter Pig, Minifigs and Matchlock - but its personal taste of course.

Ach... my resistance is waning... ;D
These look sooooo good. (Damn you both lol)

I wanted to pledge in this KS, but between the hit that my finances have taken due the Covid-19 crisis and the uncertainty, I must pass. And it is a shame, because I really like the models. :'(

sorry to hear that Antonio I hope your situation and the situation in general improves soon, but many thanks for your support of our ranges.
-
My friends and I backed it!
During this time of uncertainty it'll give me something to look forward to. :-)
The figures were beautiful and I couldn't resist. It was easier to back it as a group; it spread the cost, allowed us to get more, and bound us together for a group project. Perfect!
-
Hi, I missed the deadline-a week in limbo and being stuck in the house with kids. Any chance of a late backer pledge?
