Title: 15mm Sci-Fi New Crew Painted (10/1/2020)
Post by: War Monkey on November 22, 2019, 03:17:41 AM
Thanks to CookandrewB to whom I am giving full credit to my inspiration of building of this project thus far. Its a small ship to which I have much hope of many adventures aboard. One thing I have learn thus far is not to get carried away with the details, had I not gone overboard with them I may have been done with this one by this weekend, looks like I'll have it done next weekend for sure.

But let's have a peek at what I have done so far shall we

Here is the ship over all.

Here I have a few 15mm figures in the ship for scale.

Here I have a shot looking up thru a section looking up to the bridge.

As you can see has to how I got carried away with the details by adding all those little panels and I'm not even done yet  ;D
I also have addition wing section to add as well.

Thanks for looking and Thank You CookandrewB for your inspiration!

There is more to come and yes there will be more ships in the sky coming!

That looks way awesome.  I can't wait to see it completed.

Ha ha ha, yes. You took my concept to the next level with that. Very well done, Monkey. It looks like it falls somewhere between my dropship size and a larger multi-section ship. 12" x 8" -ish?

One thing I have tried to do is get the basics knocked out, and as I play on a ship over and over I go back and update. I may (perhaps) get to this level of detail over time, but nobody should hold their breath. lol

This should paint up really well, and I can't wait to see what you do next.

Thank You.

Oh yes! I will be updating this one as I go as well, I just found some wire that I like using as electrical conduits, plus somewhere I have some small electronic resistors and diodes to add as well.

I hoping to get to my Green Stuff and Milliput, to work on a couple of things myself right now. My control panel has all done so far with a hole punch and a utility knife, finding my putties would be so much more useful and easier.

Your ship looks great. I really need to do a ship like this myself.
Title: Re: My 15mm Spaceship Project
Post by: War Monkey on November 23, 2019, 09:41:12 PM
I wanted to do a small ship first and this one is 12 1/2 inches long. I used Foamcore Board for the base, a cereal box "Cheerios" and I had a little thicker cardboard, all the white strips where you see two walls coming together to what ever corner there is. I use white printer paper  to cover the gaps and make for a smoother look in the corners, plus it strengthens the walls as well.

This the concept that I was working from, with some changes;

I wanted a larger crew area/extra storage, a more pronounce small airlock area and a weapons section that looks more like a Gun Tub from a naval ship at the moment.

You can see the view here from top down and compare the two,

More work needs to be done and really hope to have more of it done by the next weekend.

Get her all painted up?

I like this intermediate sized ship, and maybe my next dropship build will be something in this size range. I think this size lends itself to something like an atmosphere capable bulk delivery vehicle. So, if my dropships are like delivery vans this would be more like a Semi truck for larger goods. I could see needing 1-2 of these lol

I have had much time to work on this project this week. I hope to get to some tonight and tomorrow.

Here are a few detail pictures I was able to get to with my camera.

Bridge detail still needs some work.

Airlock section.

This is the weapons turret section what really looks like a Gun Tub on some old naval ship but it will work for my needs, still needs more detail work as well.

Everything needs more work still, my advice is not to get too carried away with the details.  ;D

Might I suggest you use wire for pipes etc. Just put them straight then staple them across.

That is coming along nicely. Some paint on there will really bring it all together. Nothing wrong with detail, but you can always add more later if you are in a hurry to get it on the table for a game. If not, then just enjoy the process!

What is the black mesh stuff? I like the fineness of that as compared to granny grating.
Title: Re: My 15mm Spaceship Project (more detail shots)
Post by: War Monkey on November 27, 2019, 03:44:43 PM
Thank You.

The black mesh is fiberglass insect screen, I just so happen to have had some on hand. I want to use granny cloth as pallets for goods and cargo.

I wonder if the little patch kits would have a more reasonable amount of screen, as opposed to several doors' worth.
Title: Re: My 15mm Spaceship Project (more detail shots)
Post by: War Monkey on November 27, 2019, 09:54:13 PM
Might be, I just went to the local Mom and Pop Hardware store that rescreens screens and asked if it was okay to have a small chunk of old used stuff, they said it was no problem.

I plan on using Cat5 connectors as computers they will need the back cut off and some updating.

These are the ones I already have, so if you have a bunch of Cat5 connectors and wire laying around now you have another use for them!  :D

Hello again WM,
Would this be good to use as a floor plan? It's on sale at the moment.
I personally like using ready made art & use it as a base.Saves me loads of painting.

Pretty sure those are scaled for larger figs, but I've adjusted print plenty of times in the past for others...

0-hr and Fat Dragon Games are other producers I like, though FDG used to have a lot more ships that where pulled for using Open Design License, which I was promised LONG AGO would be stripped to allow further sale.

So far, no joy.  :'(

zruneload,
Myself and CookAndrewB are scaling the floor plans on a one inch square, I'm taking my leads from Cook, so if you can rescale that down to one inch squares I can't see why not.

I did get some more work done on this project, I have all of the hull interior stuff done, now I just need to work some more on the out areas and the wing section will have time to do so tonight hope to have pictures up soon before painting it and then some after painting it.

1"/25mm is a pretty good scale for 15mm, I find. A 25mm hallway is big enough to move a 15mm figure down without being too cramped, while still feeling like a hallway. I think most grid maps for RPGs, etc are scaled to 1", though you might find the scale of the sundry items in the image to be out of proportion if it is designed for 28mm. A car, for instance, would be enormous by comparison, even if they are both in a 1" grid. If the mad itself doesn't have anything like couches, cars, etc overlayed, then I can't see why it would matter. Things like pipes, barrels, and signs area all scale agnostic. I've seen huge Las Vegas style signs and smaller "open" signs. Pipes could be something like a water supply pipe in a house, or an oil pipeline pipe. You get the picture. It really until something is a place where you "put your butt" (chairs, cars, toilets, etc) where scale gets weird lol

I manage to get some more work done on this project I didn't get as far as I had hope too but things are moving along. So here are some of the updates;

The bridge is done now,

Exterior Air Lock is done,

The nose of the ship is done, looks more like a HEMTT,  lol

This is one of the two engine section now waiting to be complete with panels and alike,

Now the top down view,

I was hope to start paint it this weekend, that's been pushed back a little but over all I'm very happy how this is moving along

Nice! I like the engine sections. What did you use to make the sloped edges? shipping labels? Tape? I always forget that I can use shipping labels to soften some hard edges.

That is a LOT of chopping up little bits of card. Good job, man!
Title: Re: My 15mm Spaceship Project (work continues)
Post by: War Monkey on December 05, 2019, 04:37:31 PM
I just covered them with typing paper and glue, it is some pain staking work but the results are very nice, it is what took up most of my time this week so far, it will also make for a good base for the card stock to stick to as well.

Yes it is a very lot of chopping up card bits.

My game room is being use for storage at the moment while we remodel some of the other rooms, so I am not able to get to my regular tools which are buried in the back of the room. So I had to use what I could find in our desk draws, which was 4 tools, a mechanical pencil, steel ruler, tweezers and a big old box cutter! I did use a hole punch and a circle template a couple of times other then that, just a few jewelry jump rings.
Title: Re: My 15mm Spaceship Project (work continues)
Post by: CookAndrewB on December 05, 2019, 05:12:21 PM
Your tools list is basically what I use for 90% of everything I do lol.

The jewelry rings are a good idea. I could see a lot of use for those. I have some small plastic rings that I use which serve a similar purpose, but the rings I have are maybe 10-12mm? I should look for some smaller nylon washers, Those would be useful.

To see how the shipping labels can be used, check out the Malcy Bogaten Strikes Back blog. You can see the shipping labels used throughout to cover up everything from dominoes to jenga blocks, and they look pretty stellar! https://malcybogaten.blogspot.com/2017/07/preparations-of-various-builds.html (https://malcybogaten.blogspot.com/2017/07/preparations-of-various-builds.html)

I suspect that it would save a bit of time on your method, just by them sticking down by themselves, without the glue? Depending on how you go about it, they make relatively interesting panel lines by themselves. Very subtle things that get picked up by dry brushing.

Check out any Bead Shop where they have loose beads, they will also have lots of findings and charms stuff too, many of them can be used for other needs many of the barrel findings can be used for shipping barrels, fantasy vases for plants, some could be used as cactus or other small plants too. You can find very fine chains too for having around in the shipping hold or to strap down cargo.  :D

Shipping labels could work well, I'll have to look into those. Thanks

Okay so I had some time to work on this Project, so I worked on the rear of the engines, and here's a look at them

Left Engine.

Right Engine.

Over all so far.

Some Grill work waiting to be framed out.

More is really needed but I feel I have done the hardest part so far and the rest should move along much faster now.

Thanks, I have to paint it up "New" then dirty it down, I'm thinking a brown wash might do the trick, still have some more painting to do.

I think brown looks "Earth dirty" but I'm not sure how much grunge on a spaceship ends up being familiar brown dirt. I've mostly gone with black with the idea that perhaps it is stuff that has scorched during atmospheric operations but I have tried to stay away from traditional dirt ideas. I think the idea of weathering in space is an interesting one, overall. No right answers from all that I can tell. Looking at pictures of a space shuttle mostly just shows a pretty clean vessel. I'm using a world with blue dirt for my sci-fi project, which leads me to believe that some of the weathering and wash should be blue, though I'm not sure how much that will show on top of something that isn't a pretty light color. It might also be "weird" to observe since we don't think of dirt/dust as being blue. Somehow I think we can make the leap with Mars red, but I've been leery to try blue for fear that it will just look odd.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the clean version and follow-on dirty version.

Nice work!

Looking forward to seeing pics too.

Of course, while I'm just trying to get beyond using paper/poster deck plans, with a 3-D interior, you've gone and raised the bar by doing a nice interior AND exterior.

I find that sometimes black can be a little too stark, depending upon the effect desired, and the color(s) of the vehicles.  A nice medium to dark gray might work too, though it is your vessel and design, so feel free to ignore or use as you see fit.

Yes Cook, I am tired of painting wall greeblies, thank goodness that part is done, now I'm working on the exterior. I hope to have picture of it soon.

Maybe, if I ever finish my Ootheca bug shuttle, you and I might get to have a little ship-to-ship game.  :)

Thanks for the idea Dan, I haven't started a crew for this project yet, I haven't even come up with a name for the ship as of yet either.

So starting a crew I think should be my next project.

I have already started a background for a planet that all the adventures will be played on or from.

Thanks for looking.

I just remembered that I didn't give any measurements for the containers project concept that I am going with.

Okay so small containers are 1 1/2 inches wide (37mm) by 2 1/2 inches long (63mm) the exterior walls are 1 inch tall (25mm) the interior wall are 3/4 of an inch tall (19mm), which what I used in this project would be three of them in my other projects the larger container will be 1 1/2 inches wide (37mm) by 5 inches long (126mm).

The doorways are 1 inch wide (25mm) and the windows are 7/16ths by 7/16ths (10mm by 10mm), I just measured 10mm down from the top of the wall.

I hope this helps if anyone wishes to do this project as well

Do you “seal” the surfaces with Mod Podge (or similar) before painting?

Dan

Post by: War Monkey on January 18, 2020, 10:08:44 PM
No, I seal it all with a clear matte finish after it's  all finish.

If I feel like I need to coat it, I use clear water base Polycrylic  from Minwax  it drys fast and very thin with out build up that you might get with Mod Podge and because it drys so thin less likely to see brush  strokes

Does the Minwax Polycrilic tend to yellow with time?

No, you have to get the "Water Base" Min wax Polycrilic, the stuff is like painting with milk, we have furniture  that we have refinished  with it and has stayed clear for years, like to use it on some of my minis that I feel will get a lot of use, just one lite coat then do a matte finish  afterwards.

Great stuff, I love watching these WIPs!

Your (and CookAndrewB's) terrain style is quite different from mine. You are working with playable interiors, while I'm geared toward set dressing. Your style makes me think of X-Com, while mine is more Red Alert 2 (or perhaps Desperados - Wanted dead or alive).

I would do something like a Japanese pod hotel where your room was as big as a coffin. Probably make it so that you paid for your room through a vending machine type gadget. "E-2... what do you mean I didn't pay enough? It says it is 80 credits! I put in 80 credits! E-2... dangit! Fine, G-3... what? How did the door get stuck halfway open?!" *shakes building vigorously to try and get the door to pop all the way open* "Hey, buddy, can I borrow 80 credits? Yeah, the door is halfway open so I'm thinking that if I buy G-3 again it will open all the way and you can have the second night." lol

That a nice idea, it just that I have something a little bit bigger in mind, but I could have a cheap travelers section to which the pods would work very nicely.

Thank You, to all of you for the kind words.

I have started work on the general  store, but an idea hit me, not all of the building in my spaceport or colony should be made of shipping  containers.

So I'm putting the store on hold for just a bit, to hammer out this idea which I hope to show results  in a few days.

Okay so I have the general store built now all I have to do is paint it now but I just wanted you all to have a look at before hand.

Store front.

The back of the place.

I tried  my hand at making it look like adobe walls being added to the exterior which I think turned out well.

Well this is it so far again it's  waiting  to be painted

Thanks for looking

Doug

Okay something I have been working on the side, it's my concept of a 3D  printed home. I figure in the future homes and other buildings would be done this way.

Honey I'm Home!

How was your day?

Let's just relax on the back patio.

I still need to add interior walls and other finishing details. I do plan to make more buildings in this style, I think it would add more depth to my colony, the have's and the have not's.

Thanks for looking.

Doug

I apologize for the quality of the pictures, I'm doing this all with my small tablet, my computer took a major dump, that's okay a new one is on it's way.

Title: Re: My 15mm Sci-Fi Projects Terrain board (5/6/2020)
Post by: War Monkey on May 07, 2020, 02:08:37 AM
This is the start of my terrain boards, using a 2 foot by 2 foot, 1 inch pink foam board, I did a rough layout then carved away what I didn't want for a dry stream bed, I sanded the bed a little then I laid out the 12 inch by 12 inch cork and cut it out as well then glued everything down, covered it with another board packed on books and weights and just let it set for a few days.

The next step is, I will cover the stream bed in very fine sand, and start the painting and sealing process, at some point down the road I will frame it all out and add a base, for now this is going to work out just fine.

Here you can see some of my terrain pieces on the board.

Here you can get a better sense of idea of the size with figures on it.

I plan to make more of these boards, all flat that can line up with each other, that can cover a 4 foot by 8 foot table then just add the extra terrain pieces.

Thanks for taken a look

Doug

Those rock formations are still tops for me. One of the truly inspired terrain pieces I've ever seen, and wish I could replicate.

Andrew Thank You.

It's really not that hard to make the those rock formations. It's all cardboard cut and stacked in layers.

First I start an idea of what I kind of would like,

Then starting with the base I work my way up, using the last cut out as a template for the next so that I can figure where and how deep to make the next one.

When it is all glued up I just let it sit for a day or so.

Then cover in tissue paper, then let dry.

Now that it looks like some sort of frosted layer cake! Now it's time to cover it in Sprinkles! Ok it's really not Sprinkles or Sugar, it's extra fine sand the sand I use is pool filter sand that is very fine. Then let dry again.

Then prime and paint.

Give this a try! I suggest starting with a small piece then work up to something larger. they are hard a durable these in the photos are a couple of years old and are still holding up really well a hair of warping on an edge or two but it's an easy fix just add a sliver of cereal cardboard and done, no more rocking!

So I had some time today to work a little on the terrain board that I have started.

I added sand to the river bed today!

So here it is as of now with all the extra sand knocked off.

Now I will just let this dry before I start painting   :D

Nice start WM,
You could also do them double sided with a bit of work.
Plain or roads on one side & rivers on the other.

Thanks Z
I have thought about doing just that I wonder how well it will hold up? I am sure that if I was to do that a good coat of Mod Podge or any other PVA  would give it a nice hard shell. Plus a good coat of Matte Finish  would knock down all of the shine.

Using both side would save on space as well,  :)

Welcome WM,
I would try one.
Roads needn't be as deep as the rivers/gullies. They could just be painted without removing any material.
It would cut the cost & space required to store by half.
You might also use textured material like wallpaper instead . It would be more durable.

I always put my gaming boards on felt. Mostly because I play on my dining room table and I don't want to scratch the table, but I suppose the added bonus is that the boards themselves are also pretty protected in the process!

Honestly, they should be pretty durable with just some varnish, even without the PVA. The only real downside with this particular plan is that you can build down, but not "up" as any addition to the surface will cause the board to not sit flat. There are probably some ways to get around that, but if you are just looking at two sets of flat terrain, then I think it would work fine.

At some point I want to build a gaming table, the old dining table I am using is nice but there is no storage, no raised edge to hold things in place and no work area to use to keep track of your upkeep. A new table will cover all of that to include a felt.

My plan is to continue with building raised terrain with cardboard like I have and just add as the game rolls on. :D*

Be careful when placing two Mod Podged or PVA surfaces against each other when storing.  The moisture in the air will be enough for the two surfaces to try and do the horizontal tango.

Dan has a point Wm,
You can use weather proof / white glue meant for outside to avoid this.
I use this one for outside woodwork and it dries clear , as it says on the container.

Another useful reason to do the final varnish in matte medium or other acrylic varnish!

That's is why I will use Water Base Polyurethane with a Matte Finish. Dries hard a thin, no real smell and able to wash with water, if something is spilled wipes right off.

I started work on a new project for a crashed Spaceship! Actually it's going to be a three piece project a bridge, a cargo section and an engine section so here is the start of the bridge and crew section.

I want it to have some missing panel and floor plates so here is a look so far.

That could be a problem, yeah.  I wonder if it would be easier to build and paint them on a card base/frame and drop them into the open hole afterward.

I actually like the copper tubing, I think it might be as easy as rough fitting the tubes and simply installing them after you paint the hole black. But an insert would be pretty cool too. Then, potentially, you could work in far greater detail or at least not drive yourself crazy trying to paint under those little pipes! If the pipes are getting painted, then it probably matters far less.

Matt Black spray can
Undercoat grey of silver light zenithal spray can.
Wash with brown / green inks
Glue multicoloured wires from a busted USB cable.

Done  ;) :D .. at least that's the way i'd do it.

The Great Galaxy War had just dwindled to an end, pretty much all sides basically ran out of rocks to throw at each other. All the boundary lines that all sides are using are the same lines that were of the Front Battle Lines.

The war was quick and massive, no one really knew what the reason for such a massive war was for. The little folks, the ones who actually did all the fighting for many of the government didn't know why, they were all just pushed into service as were any and all ships were pressed into service. Old ships pulled from old mothball fleets to salvage yards were quickly patched together just barely able to operate, refitted with some updated equipment, weapons and crew, rushed in to battle with the off chance they would get a few punches in. This same action was done on all sides for none of the governments thought that the time and cost of constructing new ships wasn't warranted for the battles were quick and fast and ever moving, loss of ship on all side were so great that the time for newer ships was just not possible if you were going to win.

Ships in these massive battle that were to greatly damaged or a drift were left behind as those that survived moved on to the next bigger battle, no recovery or rescue ships were dispatched to retrieve such ships, for many just could not spare ships for this task for all were needed in the ever shifting front lines. Space battles moved so quickly and so far apart with each side so desperate to win that many battles generally ended up with just one or two ships limping away just trying to save themselves little alone other ships in distress. It is plausible that many crew left behind on those ships may have died from failing life support or have been adrift so long they may have died from starvation, other ships may have drift into the gravitational pull of a planet or sun maybe even an asteroid and were destroyed on impact. Some in the battle areas may have drifted into each other causing further damage coming to their demised as metal on metal crushed upon each other, there could be ships out there working together pulling their resources just to survive making one large drifting habitat.

The new sectors and boundaries are setting up their governments many are launching their own search and rescue efforts for any and all ships, outposts and other facilities from all sides and to salvage as much of a those resources that they can of what is left, for resources are very very low, if none at all in some areas. Many civilian centers that would process or manufacture products of all kinds were destroyed or severely damaged. Special Offices are set up to sift through all the military orders to find official orders for ships and facilities to locate their last whereabouts. Not only were there ships sitting out there but there are other facilities out there as well observation outpost, communication  stations, supply depots to include medical stations as well, many at this point may be in dire straights at this time if not disfunctional, serverely damaged or destroyed. To add to the problem these facilities could be anywhere on asteroid, moons, planets of all kinds to even being their own station floating out there somewhere.

These ships, these SRSS (Search Rescue Salvage Ships) are set up roughly to render little medical aid and quarters if needed and to salvage as much of the ship as possible, if they can tow it back to their spaceport they will. If they can't tow it then they will leave a marking buoy to find it later on there return to salvage more of the ship till they can tow the rest home.

Now this may sound all fine and well, but with each ship or derelict encountered are new hazards such as crews still able to fight with their last and final punch maintaining the idea that they will be boarded and destroyed. Depending as to where ships are found such as planets or asteroids others could as well find new unknown creatures that has taken up residence in their new found homes. many other hazards could be engine sitting at a critical stage like a floating bomb from the crew last ditch effort to strike back, even weapons and booby traps could be laying about always standing sentry, may even be another salvage crew working it for the same government or another that are very much not willing to share in their spoils. Pirates and mercenaries as well working for anyone that willing to pay the right price.

This is the one such ship the "Celestial Queen" and her crew, out of the many out there doing what they can to recover anyone, everyone and everything. They are working out from a small space port and mining facility called "Styler's Point" on a very large planet named "Saharamanji".

The crew of the "Celestial Queen" altogether.

I truly enjoy the "UH-OH" factor of the unknowns. I think I do need to make some building for facilities like those that "Spacejacker" made.

But I want to had the extra twist that "Warchest" did by adding a little extra corner so one could stack them or add roofs to them.

this could add to the fog of war as well to some degree.

Could do with a mix of both?

I have pretty much given up on roofs where I want to play inside a structure. Sure, they look cool in pictures, but I find them to be useless in practicality. I prefer markers to act as the fog of war (Five Parsecs uses this mechanism, among some others) where a token shows the location of "something" and when you get close enough you can reveal what that thing is. Enemies, loot, a new clue, or nothing... but you don't get to see behind the curtain until you inspect it a bit closer. Same general idea as a rooftop, only you can't really hide something from yourself by putting a roof over it after the fact lol.

I do like the little extra corner idea, though that solves a bit of practicality in terms of stacking for storage more than stacking for play, in my mind.

Oh your right about the markers and fog of war, it kind of defeat the "Surprise!" if you already know where they are. lol As far as the roof goes I'm a little OCD  ;D I can't help myself the roofs just look complete  lol

No right way about it. You like roofs, buddy, you roof the hell out of those buildings!  :D

I think that some part of my hobby is an effort to fight OCD and perfectionism. It teaches me to look at something and be happy with "good enough," which is a valuable lesson in life as a whole.

It feels very Pareto Principle, which states that 80% of the effect comes from 20% of the cause. Or, in more hobby terms, 80% of the "looks good" comes from about 20% of our effort. To close the last 80% gap from good to "perfect" requires something like 80% more effort. That is probably why people's "quick and easy" techniques tend to look so good; because they manage to hit the 20% of the effort that matters to get them to an 80% result. There are certainly times when a 100% effort is desired and time isn't a factor, and then there are times when we are better off knocking out five 80% projects in the time that it might take us to do one perfect project. The key is figuring out which situation you are in. If you want to play some games, and you need a table full of terrain, quick and easy rules the day. If you have a table full of terrain and you want to improve what you have, then taking the time on the little details might win the day.

Oh your right about that my friend.

the plan now is to make a couple of sets of those buildings, a busy spaceport or industrial center, a basic abandon facility type and an abandon over grown one, I'm lucky for having the space to store them all. I want to do them with just the basic walls and be able to  add drop-in stuff beds, consoles, lockers, and other items. I want the option to be able to have facilities as med center, military outpost, communications hub, Pirate or gang hide-out and the list goes on. Then all I have to do is just add the extras to make them so.

I'm still working on my derelict space ship as well, I will make a three sets of them so I can mix and match them up, as to not having the same ship every time. Plus  I need to make some additional cardboard terrain as well.

I need more of the dessert cardboard rock formations like those I have made, some grey tone ones for mountains and forest and some with some undergrowth as well for forest and jungles. I also want to make a few backdrops for picture taking too. Oh and some more terrain boards too  lol

Well it's a big to do list so I guess I better get cracking on it!  ;D

The Planet of Saharamanji

Saharamanji;
Is a large planet that one could compare size to the Earth's System of Neptune, it has an atmosphere very much like Earth's in many ways. The surface is 65% water with the rest being land mass, the gravity is 5 percent greater then that of earth so not very noticeable at all and easy to adjust to in a short period. The land masses starting at it's poles and moving to the equator consist of thick large jungles at each of it's poles, transitioning to thin band of savannas, before turning into deserts which bands a very wide section on both sides of the planet's equator. This is believed due to two yellow binary suns in this system, Saharamanji is in just the right orbit for these two suns making it just hot enough for it's surface conditions to be as they are. The planets rotation is a 144 hour cycle 72 hours of daylight  followed by 72 hours of night, the days get very hot and the night are cool but are warm due to the heat adsorbed during the planet's day cycle releasing it's heat slowly during the night cycle. There is a region in the southern hemisphere that is still unstable with volcanic activities and lava flows and minor earthquakes.

Rotating around Saharamanji are three moons, one of which is in a stationary orbit around Saharamanji which appears as a consistent full moon during the planets three day night cycle, the planet there for is never really in total darkness. This moon is referred to as the "Stable Moon" due to it's consistent position one could use it to navigate if one becomes lost or in case of navigational equipment failure. from time to time generally once a year there can be three full moons which really lights up the planet on both of it's sides, more often it only likely to have just two full moons about every three months

The planet is pock marked with meteor craters from very small to massively large craters made during it's earlier development when it was pounded with asteroids, creating massive rings of very tall and rugged mountain ranges, many of these mountain are so tall that respirators are need to function in these areas. From orbit you can see the rings of mountains everywhere with some over lapping of these rings even in the oceans rings holding water in them like crystal blue bowls to rings of islands positioned in deeper waters. The only areas to which no craters can been seen is the very deep ocean areas but it is suspected that craters are there just that their covered up by the ocean.

There are two types of deserts on Saharamanji. The one outside of all the craters is rough rocky flats spotted with shrub bush, the rocks littering all over were tossed from all the impact craters ranging from massive boulders to pebbles and sand, most of the rocks are fist size rocks as scattered covering, the rest is a pebble carpet covering the rest of these desert ground flats. Deserts within the mountain rings, containing sand, a very white sand from the air they look like massive large bowls of milk with a catch, in these white sands lives a species of creatures called "Snarks" for a lack of a better imagination from the only surveying team to ever visit this place. "Snarks" basically a creature much like the water creature of Earth's sharks just these live in the sand. The survey team using the two words of Sand and Shark they came up with Snark and of course each of these bowls of sand could hold a different variations of Snarks, not much is known with the limited survey. These pockets or bowls of sand as they are and are referred to as "The Bowls"

In these bowls the sand shifts around a lot exposing different areas of the rocky bottoms with pockets of a black based plant with thick blue reeds, these areas are safe from the Snarks until the winds shift and begins to refill these areas in like an incoming tide, this is how it is believed the Snarks survive with the constant shifting of the sand, trapping other desert creatures that come in to eat on the plants.

The jungles at each of the pole were roughly surveyed from space showing the rough and rugged mountain rings with large lakes of water pooled in the middle, to large areas of mangroves and their twisting winding canals going down to the oceans, to jungle swamps, to include jungle mountain rings in the oceans holding their own bowls of water, plus rings of islands in the deeper waters. Nothing is known about the plant life or the wildlife in these areas. It's  believed that the two jungles being so separated by vast amount of desert and oceans, would have their own different species of plants and animals.

The oceans again covering 65% of the planet surface. All of the coastal areas have shallow flats of water stretching out some three hundred Kilometers or more, the depth of these waters is roughly one to three meters deep making them a clear crystal blue with sanding bottoms containing lots of small plants and aquatic life. People started to refer to these areas of water as "The Shallows"  until it starts sloping downwards to the deeper waters of the oceans. To which nothing is known about these waters or it's depth let alone what it totally contains.

There are lakes as well from large round lakes with crater center peaks as small islands, to very small oasis spotting the deserts and savannas here and there, looking like tiny little emeralds from space. Here to it is believed that each of these oasis are to have their own micro eco system. This speculation is from aerial observation of what is to believe are game trails going in and out of these areas. This is also including the jungle mountain lakes as well.

The region of volcanic activity is a very large area, thought is that an asteroid impact this area creating a large lava lake in the middle of this section with a large mountain range around it. From there long and wide fissures with lava flows within them, from orbit it looks like a fractured mirror with red glowing light behind with a glowing red hole in the middle. Around this region are volcanos as well adding to the lava flow. Ash clouds in this area make the region below them very dark under them, making some of this region looking like some form of hell in reality.

The only surveying team to ever come to this place only did a very rough and short survey due to the lost of a couple of their surveyors and researchers to the Snarks in The Bowls and a few other creatures cutting their stay short. Due to the location of Saharamanji and it's small limited system being so off from the path from shipping lanes there was no reason to send any survey teams to be dispatched to the system. So there is very much left to understand about this place and that around it. Saharamanji is the largest planet in this system with five other smaller planets with moons with a large asteroid belt surrounding the everything in this system like a very large ring. Nothing is known about those planet and moons to include the asteroid ring as well.

Saharamanji sat in space for a few years drawing no interest from anyone, in fact many space charts don't even have it placed on the maps, most map makers didn't even bother to place it on their maps for is was to much out of the way to be of any interest. Then one day it was bought some years back from the Galactic Government Real Estate and Survey Office for a fraction of the cost of the original survey by a man name Alvin "Al" Styler a man that no one knows anything about.

Shortly there after a small spaceport was established everyone there started calling it "Styler's Point"

Coffee! lots of Coffee! I have been working on this background for over a year. The Universe background and Saharamanji. Plus I haven't posted "Styler's Point" yet. Kind of doing my own sorta Space Opera thing here, hoping to inspire others.

Sci-fi barge town? Hmmmm, I'm getting this vibe of Jabba's barge with all the little skiffs all lashed together and floating over a desert. It is an interesting mental image.

Good guess, the "Barge Town" project was/is that I was working on is based on an idea of a Post Apocalypse earth has a 600 foot sudden rise of the seas, power grids go down, conflicts break out around the world trying to stop the flood of people trying to get way from the rising waters yet over whelming other countries resources, food shortages are abound because farm lands are flooded, floating towns on barges pop up along the new coast lines because folks just couldn't relocate, were left behind or were not allowed to seek safer grounds.

Of course a floating town on sand skiffs would be really cool too!  :D

It would be a great idea
I'd imagine the gravitic motors or fans on those things would be enormous to keep those things afloat as would the power plants needed to supply energy to them.
Or go solar? With large areas of surface area given to solar farms with the town underneath them.
Needs a lot of planning for sure.
Keep 'em coming.

Maybe a floating village in the still functioning canals of a long forgotten empire?  Don’t limit yourself to a post apocalyptic Earth scenario.  Floating villages can’t be an Earth only anomaly.  :)

I have an idea of rocky terrain under them to help hide the supports. Each section barge/boat would be it's own piece that way can used as just one piece or many using catwalks and gangways connecting them all together. I just have to remember not to make them to large!  lol

Okay so here is my first sculpture, ever! so I took the dive and bought some Green Stuff and some tools plus 1/4 inch washers to which I use also for basing my figures (Which in storage are sitting on magnetic tape glue to the bottom of Craft/tackle boxes) So as to keep me some what with in the boundaries of the washer.

So with out a real plan I figure lets just see where this goes and here is what turned out;

Here is is with a GZG 15mm Figure;

I needed some creatures and this is the first, plus my first attempt at sculpting, there is I feel a lack of creatures in the Sci-Fi range of 15mm, fantasy games have a fair choose but I wanted something a little more.

So I will be doing some sketches and see what I come up with.

Thanks for looking/

Just to note that when you had post this I had already started working on this piece but i didn't have pictures yet to post now I do. So it's the inside of a volcano so far, working on the rest. It's an idea that I have had, haunting me for some time  ;D I don't know how big, but the picture you posted might come a little close to what I have in mind but I am sure the wife will say no not no but hell NO!.  lol  lol This piece will become taller with a lava fall and a couple of pools of lava as well plus all the paths, trails and natural bridges to get to the three entrances you can see in the photos. I thought is would be best to start with the top as to not make it to small of a gaming area.

Nice work WM,
I like it.
Looks like an arena also.

Here's an idea which i used for my lava towers which i think you could use for that. Get some crayons in orange, red & yellow , shave them or break them up into little pieces then mix them up with resin to create lava streams.
It might work with white glue also.

Worked on the volcano some more today. Then I read an article in science magazine! That almost sounded like it came from the Sy-Fy Channel "Sharkcanos"! No joke it was about sharks that can live in and around underwater volcanoes!

So I can use this for underwater  VSF/Steampunk  games!

I will continue to work an all of these until they are finish and will be adding updates as I go.

Well this is just a start of what's more to come! I find doing this is very relaxing. These are all mounted on washers for storage. the smaller ones are on 1/4 inch washers and the larger ones are on 3/4 inch fender washers.

Thanks for looking.

Thank You,
I really enjoy the great comments, again Thank You.

I wish to use names that are a proper for the whole family. I believe gaming is a family and friends thing, that all can come together and enjoy each others company, without all the electronic gizmos, in my part time game room we have one of those hanging cloth pocket shoes storage behind the closet door.

On gaming nights the rules are phones are off and are pocketed in the shoe tree. The only phone is our house land-line phone for emergencies calls for attendees. This system works and everyone look forward to it.

Of course the virus has interrupted this gathering. Generally things starts around noon and hopefully everyone coming are here by 3, this gives us time for news and just catching up on things, then around 5 we all have dinner together, relax after a great meal then about 7 it game on! Generally  it's potluck for the dinner with the wife and I handle the grilling of meats, some vegetable kabobs and ears of corn, then after dinner there are snacks and soft drinks. This is a non alcohol event.

You should make a slime-eating monster, very low to the ground and covered with all manner of malodorous oozing pustules.  It is known for its cowardly ways and has a screechy and whining kind of voice.  But has a great head of hair.

As for the name, I suggest calling it the geemakosta.  :)

Post by: War Monkey on August 12, 2020, 02:03:23 AM
Okay so I'm just starting out with sculpting Green Stuff and I like to challenge myself in doing so.

I figured if I can do a human in 15mm scale I might be able to do almost anything else. He came out a little taller than I had expected and bigger in the chest and arms too so we shall call him "Big Al".

So here is Al Styler his close associates call him "Big Al".

Here's Al next to a GZG figure.

No one knows really anything about Al Styler he owns the whole planet of Saharamanji. He picked it up for a song so to speak set himself up a place on the point of a small peninsula about 50 K's away where he has a home a nice dock and boat. He keeps to himself very much of the time and only comes into town once a month to conduct business with town folks of Styler's Point and those wanting to stay on Saharamanji. Most everyone thinks he was former military by the way he carries and conducts himself and he makes the rules around here which are very simple "Mind You Peace, Don't Steal and Don't Kill" for most parts everyone pays a small monthly stipend that helps cover the cost of running things around here. Other than that He is a mystery man.

I went with the style of the Old 1980's Battlestar Galactica Series for most part and that is the color scheme of the show I am going to go with also. Trying to stay a little with the hair style too  lol yes I am bringing back the Mullet hairstyle on one figure as well  lol

The first figure was the guy with the rifle I think he turned out really good the next three I see now in the pictures that i had gotten a little carried away with the buckles on the jackets. but hey, they will still work, I just have to pull back some on the size of the buckles. Unless it's Pirates or Cowboys  lol

I am working on getting 8 done but I have plans for a total of 12 with what I thing would make could for a good size crew

Really great work. You did a knock out job on those. As a 15mm sculptor I can say that keeping the scale and proportions correct is challenging. This is why I make weird aliens. You can't tell me I got the proportions wrong if they aren't human lol!

I have finished two more figures and two more started. I picked up a couple more rubber stoppers and will have armatures mounted on them soon. I will then have six figures in total to work on. Which will get me up to ten crew members so far.

Here are the new two figures.

here is a group shot with a GZG figure for scale.

Hopefully, I can get around to finishing the bases and painting them soon. I did pick up a new bottle of paint for the jacket buckles and belt buckles. So I have everything to paint with. I can't myself to get these guys painted, stats done and on the table!

Thanks Cook,
I try to do a little sections every chance I get. I fine that I don't accidently screw something up, I work on the legs and boots ant the details for those first. Then I work on the belt items and the torsos. Next it's followed by the main part of the jacket the front, back and buckles. Followed up by the head which I do in two sections the head it self then the hair the next time. I then finish the sleeves of the jacket and the shoulder pads. Then the last step the hands and weapons or hand held items.

Wednesdays are my hobby days so I get started as early as I can. I do a section let it set for a couple of hours, then do another section. So on  Wednesdays I can get a fair amount done may three of four sections. Then on other nights I can I get another section done, sometimes two sections.

Doug, Cook.
Look up online for a diy lamp putty curing thing.
Basically it is just a tin can with a light bulb inside ( even leds produce heat) that way you can speed up the curing time of the putty.
Not to close as it may deform...
Pretty sure you can make one

Ha, I typically need MORE working time. Last night was a bit of a race between my slow sculpting and the Green Stuff's working time. I like working while the green stuff is still tacky. Once it looses its stickiness I'm in a race against time.

I bought them at Home Depot you can find them in the specialty drawers in hardware. I use scotch tape on the end so that Green Stuff will not stick to them.

Ha, I typically need MORE working time. Last night was a bit of a race between my slow sculpting and the Green Stuff's working time. I like working while the green stuff is still tacky. Once it looses its stickiness I'm in a race against time.

I try to have something else planned when my Green Stuff start to do that as well. I have a 3 X 5 card covered with packing tape much like scotch tape. So when the putty starts losing it's  tack and stiffens up I try to make lose weapons pistols, shotguns and rifles first for a gun shop project or to have for just laying about and supply points. I made a few holsters too. Then I try to make easier things like bed rolls with ties and folded tarps with straps. I snip the square ends off of a few small zip ties, l will fill the hole and they should make for some nice monitors. So like I said I try to think ahead, if I am not fast enough then, I just twist the hardening lump to make it look like a stalagmite.

Doug , I use an old credit card, plastic & easily bendable.
I make backpacks mostly so as to have ready made stuff for my scratchbuilt vehicles.
I also use press moulds made out of sprue to quickly make them. Just dip them in water, shake
off excess, so that the putty does not stick and then press blob. Trim whilst still soft & repeat.

Thanks for the links Dan... Tom Mason ... enough said :D :D :D

Tom Mason's videos are what encourage me to take that extra step.

Like I mentioned I am working on small arms handguns, shotguns and rifles not just for Sci-fi but for other different games too. I do need more bags and sacks Back packs are a good idea too. I want to make some larger tools wrenches, hand drills, and large hammers and other items for laying about.

I should make things like extra vehicle and ship parts and junk piles too! I do want to make a couple of scratch built vehicles from card stock and chip board and detail them out with putty.

They look good. People are different sizes. Nothing wrong with all that. I would say that most of my sculpts run 12-18mm because I mostly just eyeball it. I'm always surprised when a figure ends up being dead on lol. I just expect that they will be close enough for my purposes. But then again I stay away from sculpting humans.

Yes we do so I am working on making myself a reference card to use. Some thick clear plastic that I can etch into and fill in with a black ink.

It's getting to that time of year where I generally shift into doing more on the lines of Horror/Zombies, Pulp, Pirates and Post Apocalypse. I have a plan in the making my version of 15mm Post Apocalypses Scooby-Doo and the Gang. I have a van that I need to repaint and some other odds and ends to get yet for the van to make it more PA looking. I also have a list of figures I wish to get for My PA World too.

I'd call it post apoc. Fallout has alien invaders. My thoughts about where the two things overlap predominantly has to do with the fall of a society. If aliens invade a country, and are engaged in war, that is sci-fi. If the aliens obliterate nation-states and there are survivors who fight the alien occupation force, that would skew more towards post-apocalypse. Fallout has the fall of nation-states, and the aliens are just visiting the neighborhood at an inopportune time. Maybe more for them than those in the wastelands lol

Very true!  I guess it depends on how far one takes the “War of the Worlds”-type invasion.

... I also been working on buildings for PA and Zombie games.

I missed that part until now that I re-read your post.  So where are those new buildings?  :)

I hope to get back into the swing of things soon, My Mom just past away on Sunday Dec. 6th  from cancer to which she had found out about literally two weeks prior. All our focus was there and I'm still rolling from the shock of it it was just so very fast.

Thank You to all of you folks here.
